The War Tower at Belleron

"And the peculiar thing is this, my friends
the song we sang on that fateful night-- it didn't actually sound
anything like this song."

Tribute, Tenacious D

"Bretno the Dwarf and I were very hard up for glitter.  It got to the point that booze wasn't doing it any more.  We were seeing pink elephants, as they say, and dear reader, if I ever see a rose pachyderm, it will be too soon!  Bretno the Dwarf said that the only hope of acquiring any glitter would be to descend into the War Tower.  As my legal council, I obliged because Bretno has brisked me away very many times from the maws of sobriety.  The least I could do was heed his council and just go with it.  So, we signed a contract with the War Tower's Lodge for a license to enter the fabled dungeon, got in cahoots with a few leggy lasses and away we went into the pits of despair and the fields of ruin.  It is difficult for the imagination of man to comprehend the magic involved in this place.  Since I was mostly high, I accepted it.  The place is like a cheap prostitute.  It's grimy, it's filthy and it's dangerous.  There is no geometry to the place -- its hallways lead you to rooms that shouldn't exist, and are inhabited by beings that should not be alive.  The War Tower is an infinite dungeon, with infinite surprises and infinite treasures just waiting.  We didn't find any glitter, though, but we found enough loot to feed our habit for a year.  And that's a lot of loot*.  Bretno the Dwarf and I can go through a shitload of glimmer."

Editor's Note:  The Korrenberg Press expresses that all travelers beware the War Tower, as it is an unsafe environment for even the most experienced dungeon delvers.

Excerp from "In The War Tower" by Campbell Garrett, Korrenberg Press (Vol XXXVI)

Summary:  The War Tower at Belleron is a D&D Social Game.  It is set in the world of Eberron, in a tiny little town called Belleron, just south of the Nation of Aundair.  Belleron is close to the War Tower, an infinite dungeon.  The game is geared toward the social interactions between travelers at Belleron's Green Dragon Inn.  These travelers are usually world-renowned adventurers who have already found fame and fortune.  Though it is completely within the realm of possibility for adventurers to enter the War Tower, that is not the focus of the game.

Conception:  This game is essentially a mash-up of ideas.  I was looking through my previous post history, and re-fell in love with some of the characters that I created a long time ago but had no present home.  I wanted to make a game for them to live in.  I thought that it would be great to encourage others to visit their character repositories and pull out characters that had been so tenderly described, but ultimately scrapped.  I also wanted to re-visit my RP roots.  When I was younger, I used to play in a chat room called 'The Green Dragon Inn' on IRC.  It was essentially a social fantasy game with no clear purpose except to goof around with silly old English accents, but it really helped me develop my playing style.  It also helped me develop a lot of skills that I didn't have -- like typing, reading, reading comprehension, etc.  Other inspirations include, Fawlty Towers, Sex at the Greek Olympic Village and Downton Abbey (hahaha).

Expectations:  Players will polish off their old characters and join us at the Green Dragon Inn for a merry good time.  There shall be drink!  There shall be song!  There shall be laughter!  Think about all of those times that you meet up with your friends and you talk about the good old days while sharing a pint.  Characters should be affluent, cultured, experienced and well-mannered.  It is assumed that characters have also been letters at the Green Dragon Inn for quite some time.

The Green Dragon Inn

"I do not quite mean to be so dismissive about the history of the place.  It's been around forever.  I personally inherited it from a Samurai, who inherited it from a Witch, who inherited from an anthropomorphic rabbit who inherited it from a man of great mystery.  I haven't an idea of who had before him.  All of that was long ago."  - Korram, the Proprietor

The Green Dragon Inn is an independent fiefdom that is allied to many nations.  It acts as a lodge for all licensed adventurers of the War Tower, and is a critical distribution and supply point for artifacts.  Many individuals come to the Green Dragon, including adventurers, tourists and antiquarians looking for new wares.  The Green Dragon Inn has a magical connection to the War Tower, and attempts to seize control of both has proven fruitless in the past.

The War Tower is a regenerating, infinite dungeon.  Entry into the dungeon is permitted only with the Seal of the Proprietor.  Only the Proprietor can issue a Seal, or license.  The dungeons are randomly generated, and no dungeon can be revisited.  Those who perish can only be retrieved by the Proprietor.  The War Tower also has a number of magically interconnected item caches to help adventurers along.  Individuals inside of the tower can also teleport to the Green Dragon Inn through the caches.

Random dungeons are generated using the following random dungeon generator:  http://donjon.bin.sh/d20/dungeon/

The Proprietor:  The Proprietor is the individual chosen by the Goddess of Luck through a ceremony called 'the Gamble.'  The Proprietor can sense individuals within the Tower, but is forbidden to aid them should they be killed.  The Proprietor has a number of additional duties.

Magic in the Green Dragon Inn:  Spellcasters typically have trouble casting any spell higher than 2nd level within the confines of the Green Dragon Inn compound.

The Tap Room:  The Tap Room is the main drinking hall at the Green Dragon Inn compound.  There is a gambling hall upstairs and a brothel/sex dungeon downstairs.  Though the Proprietor frequents the Tap Room, he does not hold an ownership stake in either of the three ventures.  Nobility often sits at the gambling tables, playing for some of the largest sums in the world.  I would like for someone else to run the brothel.

The Inn:  Licensed adventurers are often given a clean bed, an oak desk, candles, a chest and three square meals a day.

The Warehouse:  The Green Dragon Inn takes a 5% cut of all treasure discovered in the War Tower, often in the form of weapons and equipment.  The Inn also acts as a pawn broker, and purchases items for the convenience of all licensed adventurers.  These items are often locked up in the Warehouse.  The Inn is part of a distribution network that includes some of Khorvaire's biggest houses, so supply carriages are a very common sight.

The Chapel:  The Chapel is a non-denominational church used by a variety of ministries.  Services are generally held by a vast number of faiths.  Rival faiths are never scheduled on the same day, and Holy Days between rival faiths alternate from week to week, month to month or year to year.  Members of faiths that require ritual sacrifice are asked to please kidnap their victims from another city.  Members of faiths that celebrate their faiths with sexual orgies are a) asked to please contact/invite the proprietor and b) please to cast a variety of privacy spells.  All members of all faiths are asked to please hire cleaning companies approved by the proprietor after their service has been completed.

Other:  Though the Green Dragon Inn at Belleron imports a lot of supplies, it employs a number of individuals to raise crops and tend livestock.

Services:  The Green Dragon Inn has the following services, provided by the following Dragonmarked Houses:

  • House Cannith:  House Cannith's Tinkers Guild and Fabricators Guild both are represented by a single agent at the Green Dragon Inn.  He conducts business and schedules services, which can take two days to two months to complete, depending on the nature of the work.  The Tinkers Guild specializes in the maintenance of vehicles and structures, while the Fabricators Guild is composed of a dozen specialties, including alchemists, armorers, architects, etc.
  • House Deneith:  House Deneith's Defenders Guild is the only Deneithian guild permitted in Belleron.  The Defenders Guild deals with personal security, but when not employed, these men and women will often serve as sparring partners.  They are highly skilled and very capable.
  • House Ghallanda:  House Ghallanda is not represented at the Green Dragon Inn.
  • House Jorasco:  House Jorasco's Healers Guild have a very successful grip at Belleron.  They operate out of an underground sanctuary.
  • House Kundarak:  House Kundarak always has a banking, credit and insurance agent at the Tap Room.
  • House Lyrandar:  House Lyrandar' doesn't operate out of the Green Dragon Inn, but it's not uncommon for individual adventurers to charter a House Lyrandar flying ship.
  • House Medani:  House Medani isn't represented at the Green Dragon Inn.
  • House Orien:  House Orien's Courier's Guild and Transportation Guild are a frequent sight at the Green Dragon Inn.  There is always an agent on call, and the House has an establishment just outside of Belleron's city walls that has a number of carriages for hire.  Tickets can also be purchased for the Lightning Rail, though the closest station is three days away.
  • House Phiarlan:  House Phiarlan often stages circuses, contests, fairs and games.  Phiarlan is always sending performers, aerialists and bards to entertain the adventurers.
  • House Sivis:  House Sivis has a post office/communication station that is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
  • House Tharashk:  House Tharashk Finders Guild doesn't actually operate out of the Green Dragon Inn, but an agent is always present.  Tharashk is always looking for people who can find things, though.
  • House Thuranni:  House Thuranni is explicitly banned from conducting its activities of espionage, sabotage and assassination inside of the War Tower.  Inside Belleron, House Thuranni must conduct its business with the express consent of the Proprietor.  Regularly, however, House Thuranni conducts its business just outside of Belleron.
  • House Vadalis:  House Vadalis isn't represented at the Green Dragon Inn, but there are a number of stable hands present.

Character Creation:
As a rule of thumb, you don't need to make a character stat block.  This is just for fun.  And for P v P.

  • Gestalt 3.5 D&D Dungeons and Dragons
  • All Classes WOTC, plus Carnal Desire book
  • Level 10
  • 36 Point Buy
  • Max Hit Point
  • Two Flaws, Two Traits
  • 100,000GP
  • May Dual Prestige

You don't need to set aside money to stay at the Green Dragon Inn.  The Green Dragon Inn serves as a lodge for an adventuring company, and you pay yearly dues which are automatically deducted from any loot you take from the War Tower.  Additionally, membership at the Green Dragon Inn warrants a 10% deduction on all purchases, and a 10% addition to all loot sold.  So, costs for items purchased are 90% and costs for items sold is 60%.  For other benefits, see 'Green Dragon Inn:  Membership Benefits' section.

Well shit, you had me there until 3.5e. I have a Paladin from an Eberron-Pathfinder campaign that I unfortunately had to drop out of due to RL concerns that would fit quite well into this, although I'm questioning which "version" of the guy I would use (Last War survivor, background involved him getting scarred in a big way via Day of Mourning, but later on in the campaign he was going to have the chance to fix them.)

PhantomPistoleer

It could be Pathfinder.  Nothing is set in stone.

Alternately, the Pathfinder Paladin is generally pretty backwards-compatible with 3.5 D&D.  I'm interested in joining in on this game, and I know I certainly wouldn't mind letting people use the Pathfinder version of the class. ^^

I've got an old Eberron character I once used in a solo game who I think would be a pretty good fit for this.  An Elven Warlock/Rogue from House Thuranni, who used her various skills and magical abilities to be an entertainer, escort and spy.

Miroque

but why are the characters all beefed up to superhero level.. why not lv3 or something.. atleast then everyone would be scared of sharp objects...

Hmm.  Maybe level 6?  I've got to admit, I've never received "too high a level" as a complaint.

Personally, I'd prefer level 10 as the starting point.  The basic concept for the game seems to be that our characters are going to be particularly skilled and experienced adventurers who have decided to spend the rest of their days making a living off of an infinite, self-replenishing, constantly-rearranging dungeon.  Being enough of a badass to hit level 10 is probably the minimum requirement for spending any length of time at the Green Dragon.

As far as complaints go, the only one I can really think of is that Eberron might not be the best fit for this sort of game.  It seems like something that might fit better in some other setting, like the Forgotten Realms or Planescape.  Even then, it won't really impact my enjoyment of the game at all. ^^

I would almost say that this game is kind of like a mini-Planescape in Eberron.

Is this open to all players or are you just looking for people heavily experienced  in DnD?

Also   , Do we have to Gestalt our characters or can we just go single?

It's open to all players.  You don't need to be heavily experienced in D&D.  The theme of the game is for you to pick a character that you've already made and tailor that character into this game.  Technically, you don't even have to make a character sheet.  You could even provide the character sheet from a previous character, if you wanted.

Now its a matter of finding which character to dust off. Most of my characters have been Shifters, so being set in Eberron suits me just fine.

Quick question: If we take the Leadership feat, how should we handle the cohorts?  My character, Maraen d'Thuranni, had a sexy Changeling cohort named Hel who would probably also be a good addition to the game. ^^;

In that instance, I wouldn't charge you a Leadership Feat for a cohort.

Since the adventurers are so rich, I just assume that all adventurers have squires/cohorts/servants.

Follow the rules for the Leadership-based cohort, but instead of spending a feat to purchase Leadership... don't. :)

Those rules say nothing about the actual process of creating the cohort, however.  Nothing about stats, or starting wealth, or feats, or prestige classes...  Just some stuff about alignment and starting level.

Ah, okay.

Well, you have two options!  One is to create a 6th level cohort with a 36 point buy and starting GP for a 6th level character.  Or you could just create a second character who is a 'cohort' using the character creation rules listed WAY above.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Korram is a well-mannered, cultured and charming half-elf.  He is not originally from Eberron, but somehow managed to find himself there after very many adventures.  Korram was originally an officer for a small militia, but found the life to be tedious.  He is often accompanied by a small pug named Sir Percy.  He likes to cavort with dwarves and gnomes.  Korram enjoys adventures and helping people, as well as drinking, being merry and hanging out with pretty women.

He won the Green Dragon Inn from a world-weary samurai in the Planescape.  He is fair, likable and exceptionally chatty.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This character's background is depicted in the following letters to his last living relative.

Letters from the Front:

Dearest Aunt Mildred,

I am writing to express to you my sincerest gratitude for your gift in the form of platemail armor and a greatsword.  Both are extensively appreciated, and will serve me well during my commission against the living dead.  Yes, I am content to report that I have graduated from Trygis Military Academy with top honors and attained an officership with a fiefdom here in Feywood.  It does not pay much, but it is a living.  I hope to make my father proud.

That may sound odd to you, since you have always thought me to be indifferent towards my humanity.  Without speaking much on the subject, let me assure you that I have always felt out of place with both elvenkind and humankind, yet retain a fondness for my parents whom you know I never met.  You speak so kindly of them, though I know you never much liked my mother.  I read your old letters.  But I cannot blame you.  Humanity won't ever as a whole understand the elves, and the reverse is true, too.  I understand why you disliked her.

I wish I had met them, though.  Everything I have ever read of my father is fantastic literature.  He was bold, brave and good.  I hope to emulate my career after his...  I simply hope that I do not disappear like he did at the end.  It is funny, that is my greatest fear.  To disappear, without a word, into the darkness.

But I do not like to think about those things.  I would like to remain wholly optimistic about my career.  I have become more than a novice with swords, and am deemed a competent tactician by my instructors.  They say that I have a natural presence, a force of charisma, that instills confidence in those around me.  That is a terribly nice thing to say, and I hope that I have recited it correctly herein.  I should hate to quote someone incorrectly!  At any rate, I have also found something of a passion in mapmaking.  I enjoy charting the edges of a coast, and hope to spend a part of my stipend on ink for the task.

I should like to write to you later, Aunt Mildred.  You are so very dear to me.

With Love,

Koram.

A Sample Post of his Attitude

QuoteThe knight turned to look at Jo and laughed heartily.  Then he picked up another port, took a sip, then climbed unto his stool and then unto the counter.  He stood upright, saluting the crowd, and then taking another swig.

"I say no!" he said with serious enthusiasm.  "I do not rhyme unless I am drunk, and I am not down for the count just yet."  He counted the syllables after this statement, and then nodded to himself when he discovered that he had not rhymed.

"But do not think me a drunk, dear cleric!" he said to a row of laughter.  "No, a man is a drunk if he drinks to forget, and I only drink to remember."  He coughed, testing his voice, and then began to dance and sing on top of the bar like a boisterous, hardy male ought whenever in the throes of liquor.

"Give me some of that dwarven ale!" he sang.  "Enough to send me slumber a-sail!  Direct me to the closest whale, so that I may be it's nail.  Give me some of that dwarven ale so that I may forget what the doctor said:  that I took up a strange and foreign ail and soon should be dead!  Give me some of that dwarven ale because elves do not brewmasters make!  It is but a preference, for-heaven's-sake!  Give me some of that dwarven ale, enough to send me slumber a-sail!  Direct me to the closest whale so that I may be it's nail!  Give me some of that dwarven ale, so that I may find myself among the frail, and die of consuuuuuuuumption!"

He took up his stein and took a deep drink, finishing the contents of his mug. Then he bashed his stein against the stein of others, and laughed merrily.

Kulzu - Imp Assassin
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kulzu the Imp is a diminutive spirit of poison and shadow, a scout and assassin among the ranks of the many different kinds of fiends that fight on the battlefields of Shavarath, the plane of eternal war.  She has a lot of old war stories, but as far as she is concerned, the most interesting part of her life began on the day she was knocked out of the sky above a Shavarathi battlefield, and wound up hitting the ground in southern Karrnath.  A squad of Karrnathi shock troops was making a raid on a Cyran Warforged contingent, and the sight of a group of metal men fighting off an attack made by zombies and skeletons piqued the little devil's curiosity enough that she decided to desert her post and hang around on the Material Plane for a while.

Having spent several decades traveling the world since then, Kulzu has made a name for herself in underworld circles as a paid assassin, and has gained some renown in her alternate form as an adventurer.  Though few realize it, she is also the original creator of a new and deadly variety of poison that is popular among certain cults of the Dragon Below, a poison known as Imp's Milk.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Sample Post of Kulzu from Another Game:

Quote from: Kunoichi on November 26, 2011, 01:35:54 PM
There was no rest for the wicked, or so the saying went.  Certainly, little Kulzu the Imp was not resting at all when the giant fireball made its explosive entrance into the world in the middle of the night in Arromouth.  Fooling around with beakers and burners of various foul-smelling liquids, she was instead wiling away the midnight hours in the practice of a trade that was very near and dear to her cold, black heart.

Here in Arromouth, the Imp hadn't found herself with very much to do.  Ilona, her Erinyes mistress, was frequently busy going around and performing minor tasks in exchange for suitable rewards, but in terms of actually corrupting the souls of the townspeople, they hadn't made much headway.  About the only decisive victory they'd had in that area was convincing the local whores to unionize, and even the resulting increase in hedonism only went so far.  This left little Kulzu without much to do, and as a result, the bored Imp had spent most of her time engaged in poisoncraft, milking herself for her natural poisons and distilling them down into usable doses.

Even that was beginning to lose its luster without having anybody to sell to, however, and truth be told, she was beginning to yearn for the day when she would be asked to send all these mortal souls around them on their way to the Nine Hells, so that they could finally move on from this dull, boring place.  She knew just how she was going to do it, too.  Just add a little of the right poison into the water supply, and then pick off whoever survived that with her own special skills...

<Kulzu, I'm leaving to investigate the explosion.>

<Ah, of course, Mistress.>  Snapped out of her little reverie by Ilona's telepathic voice, she began packing away her beakers and flasks.  Lacking innate telepathy of her own, the Imp could respond when spoken to, but not send out any telepathic signals of her own.  <I'll come with you, then.  You may have need of me.>

It took only a few moments to turn invisible and follow along after the Erinyes, and only minutes from there for the two of them to get to the crater where the Celestial had landed and where she was currently conversing with some Fey creature of some sort.

Kulzu wasted no time in shifting her shape, taking on the form of a tiny little Celestial herself in case the one down in the crater had the ability to see through invisibility as the Erinyes did.  Moving over to where her Mistress stood, she perched on the Erinyes' shoulder, and whispered a question into her ear.

"So, how are we going to handle this?  Attack now, or something more devious?"  Her Mistress would be able to respond to the question telepathically, of course, which would allow her to outline whatever her plans were to the Imp without alerting the two below of anything.

Well, that and Imps appear to have an innate +4 racial bonus to Charisma, according to the Monster Manual. :P The GM of the game she was in allowed me to combine the 3.5 stats and the Savage Species monster class, so she had things like a wider selection of alternate forms than the standard imp, regeneration instead of fast healing, and so on.  I don't think she was quite worth the +4 LA, even with that, but in a Gestalt game, I think she'd be rather fun to play as.

but why are the characters all beefed up to superhero level.. why not lv3 or something.. atleast then everyone would be scared of sharp objects...

Because beefed up heroes having a quickie behind the stables is inherently hotter than if it were some schmoes still green behind the ears XD.

Buuuuut now you present an interesting idea; what if we have some people play beefed up superheroes, and others play the bright-eyed youths discovering the War Tower for the first time? Or just have 'em as NPCs.

Before I saw that she had alternate forms, I was pondering the logistics of how she'd, uhh, "accommodate" some of the people she might meet at the inn. Halflings and Gnomes are small, but that seems... Well, Peg A being much too big for Hole B.

Then again, figuring out how to make it work would be half the fun >:)

xD Well, size differences can certainly be enough of a restriction for people to really have fun and start getting creative, in my experience...  And yes, alternate forms can really help for when people want something a little more standard.  In Kulzu's case, her 'big person' alternate form is a Tiefling, which she primarily uses as the face for a modest poison-crafting business she runs on the side.

Her other alternate form, since Imps can get up to two, is a Coure Eladrin, which is useful for dodging would-be demonslayers. ^^ Though, I'm considering making it a Gnome or Halfling for this game, instead...

The Lion of the Press:
The Ballad of Campbell Garrett
Adventurer, Explorer and Famed Reporter for the Korremberg Press

"Lissen my man, I'm jest heer to get de' stone culd facts;  but if we're keeping this off'er de record, then by oll meens, imbellish a littel."
--  By Campbell Garrett, 998 YK

Foreword by the Editor:  Dear Reader, as your esteemed editor-in-chief, I must regretfully apologize for the bizarre antics of one of my reporters, Mr. Campbell Garrett.  As you already know, Mr. Garrett has acquired a reputation in the civilized world as an excellent correspondent, an intrepid adventurer and, to my innermost regret, an overzealous, ego-maniacal, anal retentive madman.  But what can I say?  The boy is like my son.  I have known him for years, and taught him our craft.  And though I can say that I am proud of him, for he is only eighteen and stands heads and shoulders above almost all of his peers in the journalism world, the Korrenberg Chronicle does not in any way condone or advocate his rampant drug and alcohol abuse, or his misuse of elemental transportation.  On the behalf of our staff, we apologize to the people of Korth, and will take steps to assure that events like the ones that happened during the night of the incident never happen again.

A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man:  Born in 980 YK in a small village in Breland to commoners, C. Garrett didn't demonstrate an aptitude for learning until the distinguished scholar and renaissance man, Mr. Silar Fiddlewinks, renowned all across Khorvaire for his work on elemental binding, found himself in the Breland countryside with a broken lightning carriage.  While the gnome tinkered away in the underbelly of the machine god, Garrett, then a boy of eight, approached the gnome and made an insightful (and very insulting) remark that at once created a solution in the gnome's mind.  The gnome took a special interest in the child afterward, and Mr. Fiddlewinks quickly discovered that Garrett was intellectually very gifted and soaked up knowledge like a sponge.

Mr. Fiddlewinks talked Garrett's parents into allowing him to attend Korrenberg Academy, where Garrett excelled at his coursework in philosophy and religion.  He graduated at the age of 15, and sought employment as a copy editor at the Korrenberg Chronicle, and was eventually elevated to the level of correspondent for the internationally acclaimed publication at 16.  As a reporter, Garrett worked feverishly to deliver eye-grabbing stories, and has even gone as far as venturing to cold Frostfell and dark Xen'Drik to track the movements of established adventuring parties.

He has published seven volumes: The Layman's Guide to Esoteric Religion in Khorvaire, Diverse Tactics in Warlord, Magic Around Us, The Strange History of Breland Cheese, Essays on Dwarven Dialects, The Dialects of Kaius the III, and the ever popular, Dungeoneering.  Furthermore, his band, Shegroth's Teeth, released a popular hit a year ago entitled, Swim Towards the Siren.

Adventuring:  Garrett has earned much of his experience and reputation from previous adventures with well-known parties, and has benefited from the advice and friendship of famous explorers, dilettantes, pirates, nobles, etc.  However, Garrett has the tendency of taking notes during combat, because he wants to accurately describe occurrences for his readers, thus making him insufferable on the battlefield.  Furthermore, though highly intelligent and extremely well-versed in any environment, groups often make the mistake of employing Garrett as a scout (in fact, the phrase "Garrett, scout ahead" are now considered famous last words).

Personality:  Garrett loves himself, but typically excludes himself from his stories.  However, he buys into the hype of him being a swashbuckling everyman, and his youth has given him a sense of immortality that makes him overly brash.  He is conceited, arrogant and smug, and he is never up to any good (aside from his stories, all of which are always good).

Behavior:  Loud-mouthed, insolent, intolerable;  these words describe Mr. Garrett well.

Language:  Though Garrett has been educated in the college of Religion and Philosophy at Korrenberg, Garrett speaks in a jocular, self-aggrandizing vernacular of lower-class Brelians, spattered with nautical references and adventuring idioms.

Rules of the Trade:  As a journalist, Garrett must abide by a certain code of ethics.  The code is listed as follows:
1)  Never tell your readers a lie, unless it protects them.
2)  Never tell your editor a lie, unless it will protect him/her.
3)  Always protect your sources, no matter what.

From the Journals of M. Campbell Garrett, Journalist Extraordinaire and Generally Amazing Person

*NOTE to the EDITOR:  Please make me sound more awesome in your edits.  I know that it's hard to make me sound any more awesome, but you can't have too much of a good thing.

Now what was a rock star world-class adventurer like myself doing with such a motley crew of butchers?  I wish, dear reader, that I was there excavating the deepest, staunchest secrets from the Karrnathi front.  No, instead, I was serving time.  Time owed to the great Capitol of the Eastern Kingdom, Korth, for crimes of debauchery.  It all began when my supplier and P.R. agent, Brotno the Dwarf, acquired an electric car, four belt pouches of glitter and an irresistible desire to get laid by the premier goblinoid prostitute, Enrica.  Somehow we ended up being chased by ravenous dust clouds that chomped at the ankles of timid men and ate brave men whole.  I didn't want to get eaten, and neither did Brotno, so that scumhead kicked the electric car into gear and elbowed the earth elemental in the face to get us moving at an amazing velocity (read:  15 miles per hour).  This was too much for Brotno, and it was too much for the elemental, and so we wound up in a tavern, upside down, with the earth elemental pinning us.  We were also charged with a number of other crimes, such as public exposure, assaulting a member of the clergy and a host of others, but to be very frank, I do not remember any of it.  I was really, really high, and there were dust clouds chasing after me.

And dear reader, you never want to be caught by a dust cloud.

My time in prison was exciting.  I took copious notes on the characters and scenes, and I might have made a few contacts.  It all really depends.  You can't ever count on people when they are in prison.  One shakedown and suddenly they aren't the contacts to have in the yard.  They are yesterday's news, and it all dawns on them that they're stuck behind those iron bars and spit-wad walls.  But I can't relate.  I'll never be yesterday's news.

How did I get here, in this small hall at the Rekkenmark?

I was introduced to this humdinger of a woman named Major Saithe, the leader of this elite crew of hags and weirdos.  Major Saithe is the enemy.  I was introduced to her by my friends Led and Zed.  Led and Zed are guards in Karrnathi, and real nice fellows, too.  One of them said:

"Major, by order of the King, we are placing Mr. Garrett in your custody.  He is to be your prisoner."

"Yes," said Led, I think, "We can't keep him any more.  Real embarrassing business."

"You see, he has escaped prison.  Three times."

"It really wouldn't be so bad if he had escaped and we had caught him again, but each time, he just wandered back into prison.  We weren't suspicious, the first time.  See, he was as high as a kite, so we thought him a numb skull.  The second time, we just thought he was the most unfortunate soul ever.  Third time, well, we got curious.  And... well, it's very embarrassing."

"Mr. Garrett has written three articles on how to escape our prisons*," Led said, I think.

I could only grin at the Major and give her a thumbs up from my manacled hands.  I felt like chewing on a caltrop, because I knew I was grinning like a shit-eating dickhead.  I've looked at myself often in the mirror to know what my face looks like at all times, and even I dislike my shit-eating grin.  I can't imagine what that nasty, ghoul-limbed troglodyte of a woman thought.  Probably surprise, since she couldn't find it in her heart to just kill me, and let me tell you, she's the sort that will as soon as kill you then look at you.  Maybe she felt joy, because the jobs at the Rekkenmark, they aren't of the variety that you just walk back from.  She knew I was dead meat.  Whatever.  It meant an exclusive.  Those parchment writers were so stuck on the fact that I wrote a few articles describing the inefficiency of their prison system that they got a hard-on when I said that I'd coast with their gung-ho naturalists.

"Oi!  Wot's the furnace jibbin' 'bouts?"  Surprised that this is how I talk?  Me too.  I can't shake the accent.  "Oh, I get it!  He's sellin' insurance!"  I'm not sure whether or not I like Mark.  He seems like the sort of fellow you don't want to house your pastries.  In fact, he's probably the first guy you want to house your enemy's pastries.  But that means that I get to hang out with him, and I can't find anything heart-warming about his frosty exterior.    "No?  Den' what's dis business of calculatin'?  Pfft.  I say bait an' trick 'em, an' I can get my ex--"  I eyed the major, "Once dis' mission's been declassified, dat' is."

Well, Kulzu's character sheet is pretty much done, aside from the bio. ^^

By the way, Phantom, I know you said that classes from any official source were allowed, but what about feats?  Two of the feats I picked up for Kulzu were from Dragon Magazine, which isn't really known for having very well-balanced content. ^^; The two feats I chose were Poison Specialization and Deep Poisoning, both of which I think are pretty fun and flavorful, and help my character be a bit better in her chosen field of work.

If you'd allow it, I could also swap out her standard Imp poison sting that does Dexterity damage for that of a Euphoric Imp from the Fiend Folio, which leaves the target dazed for 2d6 rounds due to being caught up in a state of blissful euphoria. ;D I imagine that would end up making her fairly popular among the more hedonistic patrons of the Inn.

I hope so.  I may have to change things around a bit, though.

Maybe instead of it being an inn, it being an air pirate ship.  And instead of having 3.5 gestalt at 10, maybe make it an E6 Pathfinder game.  I don't know.

I'm sort of fine with either system.

Air pirate ship sounds more exciting then an inn

Edit: In case of a gestalt d&d game, if one of your classes is a monster with level adjustment, do you still get the full HD from the other class?

Kunoichi

Yes, you do.

As far as the choice in systems goes, I think I'd prefer sticking to the current one over switching to a new one.  I like where my character is at, mechanically, and would probably switch to an entirely different character if we switched systems. ^^;

I don't mind changing settings, though.  Kulzu can fit in pretty well in a variety of places, so I don't really have a preference on that front.

The brothel is a bit more complicated than that.  To answer your question, the brothel owner is also the owner of a number of sex slaves -- and adventurers may use and abuse them for free.  It's not uncommon, however, for a famed adventurer to sell him or herself to other adventurers, or people who have the money.  The grotto also has a large group room and a dungeon.  There really is no privacy there.  Whether it's with a slave or an adventurer, sex in the grotto is very likely to attract an audience.  Then again, there are a lot of people having sex down there.

Like the bar upstairs, the grotto/brothel is always very full of patrons -- most of them aren't adventurers, though.

As a side note, since it is outside of the purview of the proprietor's magical vision, it is one of the only places in Belleron where assassins might strike.

xD I'm glad you approve.  I can tell I'm going to have quite a bit of fun playing Kulzu in this game.

Edit: By the way, would it be alright if I swapped out a couple of Kulzu's spell-like abilities for ones of equal level, that would be slightly more fitting to her overall theme and backstory?

Specifically, I was thinking I could swap out the first level divination spell Detect Good for the first level divination spell Instant Search, which would make her a more competent scout by drastically cutting down the time it would take her to use the Search skill, and then the 1/day Suggestion, a third-level enchantment spell, could be replaced by Venomfire, a third-level transmutation spell that would be much more in keeping with her general affinity for poison.

Kimera

Sounds like a nasty, but sexy little imp  ;D

As for the setting, does it stay with the inn or will it be the new idea with the airship?

Kunoichi

She's a Lawful Evil spirit of shadow and poison, so a little nastiness is par for the course, I think. ;)

We seem to be staying with the Inn, at least at the moment.

Kimera

With gestalt, picking one of the savage species progression classes becomes very tempting and more playable

Kunoichi

That's certainly true. ^^ Any specific ones you were looking at in particular?  I know that Rakshasa have a distinct place in the setting, for example, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, I believe there are progression classes for Dragons in at least one issue of Dragon Magazine.

Kimera

Just skimming the Savage Species book at the moment.  Some of the outsiders came to mind

Kunoichi

Those could certainly work.  Outsiders tend to have a nice mix of powerful abilities, overall.  Though, for an alternative that would be from somewhere a little closer to home in the setting, might I recommend taking a look at either the Medusa or the Harpy, both ECL 10?  You could be an adventurer or mercenary hailing from the monstrous nation of Droaam, which could have all sorts of interesting opportunities for backstory and personality.

In particular, if you chose a Medusa, you'd probably have Kulzu approaching you about the possibility of milking your snakes for their Strength-damage poison. :P

Kimera

A medusa is a possibility, although the gaze attack might cause problems?

Kunoichi

#74
QuoteUnless specified otherwise, a creature with a gaze attack can control its gaze attack and “turn it off ” when so desired. Allies of a creature with a gaze attack might be affected. All the creature’s allies are considered to be averting their eyes from the creature with the gaze attack, and have a 50% chance to not need to make a saving throw against the gaze attack each round.

Looks to me like it won't cause problems for this particular sort of game. ^^

Edit: Also, this article should provide some useful information, if you decide to play a Medusa character.

Edit2: And finally, Narrowed Gaze would make it even easier to avoid friendly fire by making your gaze single-target, while still giving you the option to use the AoE version when necessary.

EroticFantasyAuthor

I would vote Pathfinder.

What about the possibilities of playing two characters(sisters) at the same time?

Also, would not being very familiar with Eberron be too much of an issue?

Kunoichi

I doubt Phantom will have any issues with you playing two characters at the same time.  I was going to do the same at first, before I settled on playing a different character.

As for not being very familiar with Eberron, it shouldn't be too much of a problem in-play, since the game is mainly going to be focused around a single location.  I'd be happy to help you adapt your characters to the setting, if you'd like, or you could do what Phantom did with one of his two characters and say that they're from some other world altogether, and that they got to the Inn through some odd planar shenanigans.

They lived in a small Wood Elven town settled in an old fey forest, it was not an uncommon sight to see friendly fey around the town, centaurs, satyrs, and dryads were common place. The town's primary Diety is Aaluaran.

The High Priestess is a Nymph, their grandmother, her grove is the town's temple grounds and place of worship. Their mother is a Half-Nymph Woof Elf, and like her mother, a Carnal Mage of great skill. Their father is a charming Human Rogue who favors daggers & acrobatics. One of their parents' former adventuring companions retired to live in the town alongside them. A Changeling Bard who shared her friends' love of Aaluran, and is also a talented seamstress. She has been like an aunt to both Dawn and Stephanie, gifting them each with an identical magic item that would allow them to change their outfits on a whim, their imagination being the only real limit.

As young girls they were taught and spent time with each member of their family. Early on Dawn showed an intense fascination with arcane magic. She was overjoyed when she awoke one morning with purple hair, having had a dream about changing her hair color with a spell. Her mother and grandmother began her training immediately. She was eager to learn all she could, not just about arcane magic, but nature, and Aaluran as well(of course some information was saved until she came of age).

While Stephanie always enjoyed watching her mother and grandmother use arcane magic, she was far more interested in testing and challenging herself. She seemed to be a natural acrobat, spending entire days in the tree-tops. It did not take her long before she was asking her father to teach her those cool dagger tricks he always showed people. Her father handling most of her training.

Even after their training was complete, they stayed around the town for several years, putting what they've learned to good use by helping where they could. Eventually the desire to see the world got the better of them. With plenty of heartfelt "goodbye, stay safe"s and well wishes, they left their home town to start their days of adventuring. Intending to help make the world a better place while sharing Aaluran's teachings with those interested.

Shared Ons: They're both voyeurs, they love to watch. And while Dawn may not be as big of an exhibitionist as her big sister, she enjoys wearing teasing and revealing clothing. Not to mention that both of them are always looking for an opportunity to do something naughty in public.

Shared Offs: No Anal(this doesn't mean no cheek play, hotdogging is highly encouraged), No Scat/Urine Play, No BDSM, No Vore

For Author On & Offs just see my preferences  :-)

Edit: And of course when I say Changeling I'm referring to the 3.5 race, not the new Pathfinder race that is the off-spring of hags.....apparently.

Homebrew For Approval

Carnal Mage(Modified Beguiler) - Updated for Pathfinder

Spells: To cast a Carnal Mage spell, you must have an Charisma score of 10 + the spell’s level (Cha 10 for 0-level spells, Cha 11 for 1st-level spells, and so forth). The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a Carnal Mage’s spell is 10 + the spell’s level + the Carnal Mage’s Cha modifier. Like other spellcasters, a Carnal Mage can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. The base daily spell allotment is given on Table 1–1(Beguiler, PHB II). In addition, you receive bonus spells for a high Charisma score

A Carnal Mage needs a full night's rest and regains her spells through having sex for an hour(this can occur before or after resting). Masturbation does not count as sex for this purpose. This would use the mechanics for Perform: Sexual Techniques in the Book of Erotic Fantasy.

Class Skills (6 + Int modifier per level): Acrobatics, Bluff, Climb, Diplomacy, Disguise, Escape Artist, Intimidate, Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (Local), Linguistics, Perform (Sexual Techniques), Perception, Profession, Sense Motive, Sleight of Hand, Spellcraft, Stealth, Swim, Use Magic Device.

HP: D8

BAB/Saves/Spells Per Day(Aside from 0 level): Same as Beguiler

Cantrips: 0 Level Spells are cast like any other spell, but
they are not expended when cast and may be used again.

Eschew Materials: The Carnal Mage gains Eschew Materials as a bonus feat at first level.

Orgasmic Renewal (Ex) (Replaces Trapfinding): The Carnal Mage can convert the sexual energy produced by an orgasm into magical energy to renew spell slots. She can only do this once per day at first level, gaining an additional use every-other level(3rd level, 5th level and so on for a total of 10 times per day at 19th level).

Masturbatory Renewal At first level, the Carnal Mage can renew a 1st Level Spell Slot by achieving an orgasm through self stimulation.

Sensual Caresses At fifth level, the Carnal Mage can renew up to a 2nd Level Spell Slot by achieving an orgasm through the sensual massages of a partner's hands

Oral Bliss At ninth level, the Carnal Mage can renew up to a 3rd Level Spell Slot by achieving an orgasm through her partner's blissful application of lips and tongue.

Erotic Delight At thirteenth level, the Carnal mage can renew up to a 4th Level Spell Slot by achieving an orgasm through the delightful joining of her partner's genitals with her own.

Complete Ecstasy At Seventeenth level, the Carnal Mage can renew up to a 5th Level Spell Slot by achieving an orgasm through her partner combining Sensuality, Bliss and Delight to induce pure ecstasy.

Distracting Tease (Ex) (Replaces Armor Proficiency and Armored Mage): Often a good distraction can provide an effective defense. A peeking areola, partially exposed southern cheeks or the subtle press of puffy petals against thin snug fabric can be all it takes to cause an opportune loss of focus. At first level the Carnal Mage gains a bonus to her Armor Class equal to her Charisma Modifier.  This ability functions only when the Carnal Mage is wearing revealing clothing.

Cloaked Casting (Ex): Starting at 2nd level, a Carnal Mage’s spells become more effective when cast against an unwary foe. You gain a +1 bonus to the spell’s save DC when you cast a spell that targets any foe who would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not).
At 8th level, you gain a +2 bonus on rolls made to overcome the spell resistance of any affected target.
At 14th level, the bonus to your spell’s save DC increases to +2.
At 20th level, you become able to automatically overcome the spell resistance of any affected target.

Surprise Casting (Ex): Starting at 2nd level, when you successfully use the Bluff skill to feint in combat, your target is denied its Dexterity bonus (if it has one) to AC for the next melee attack you make against it or the next spell you cast. You must remain in melee with the target, and the attack must be made or the spell cast on or before your next turn. The target is not considered fl at-footed and therefore can make attacks of opportunity against you if you do not cast defensively. Surprise casting can also be used when engaged in a sexual act(including masturbation).
At 6th level, you gain the ability to feint in combat as a move action instead of a standard action. If you have the Improved Feint feat, you can now feint in combat as a swift action.

Advanced Learning (Ex): At 3rd level, you can add a new spell to your list, representing the result of personal study and experimentation. The spell must be a sorcerer/wizard spell of the enchantment or illusion school and of a level no higher than that of the highest-level spell you already know. Once a new spell is selected, it is forever added to your spell list and can be cast just like any other spell on your list. You gain another new spell at 7th, 11th, 15th, and 19th level

Silent Spell: At 5th level, you gain Silent Spell as a
bonus feat.

Still Spell: At 10th level, you gain Still Spell as a bonus
feat.

Nymph Blooded Template

Captivating Beauty: When looking at the individual in their full glory(nude or mostly), Will Save or Dazed for one round. Can't suppress or renew.

Nature's Grace: Wild Empathy(As Druid ability) with +2 Racial Bonus(Nymph is +6 racial bonus, roughly one-third nymph, one third the bonus, heh). Knowledge (Nature) and Survival always considered class skills.

Nymphomania(Flaw): Certain parts of the body are more sensitive than normal, usually breasts(for women) and genitalia that are affected. This causes the individual to become aroused rather easily depending on the body part and level of increased sensitivity. Along with increased sensitivity are intense periodic cravings of certain forms of stimulation, usually a form of stimulation the individual hasn't experienced in awhile.

For men this problem occurs about once a month, for women it tends to take affect right after their normal monthly cycle. The effects between both genders are the same however, depending on the type of stimulation, certain parts of the body will begin to tingle and itch differently. It will be very minor at first, eventually growing into a full on aching need after several days. This is the first clue to what their body is craving, the second is that soon after their period starts(even the first night), they're treated to increasingly vivid and intense erotic dreams. Once their nymphomaniac period begins, each masturbatory orgasm becomes less and less satisfying until they find that they can no longer bring themselves to a climax with self stimulation. After a couple of days this problem starts affecting other forums of stimulation until the craving is fully satisfied.

The intensity of the craving and resulting effects gets worse and worse with each passing day until the craving is satisfied. While the first day may not be all that different aside from being constantly horny, the fifth day has their bodies in a never ending state of full arousal.

So that's pretty much the fluff. as for mechanics I'm not sure how exactly to handle it. Thinking a table for the type of stimulation craved(which would go along with the character's kinks and limits, for example; if the character did not like anal, anal stimulation wouldn't be a possibility). As well as a cumulative penalty/bonus for each day that passes without having the craving satisfied. Penalties would likely affect most skills(especially those that require concentration) due to the distraction of intense arousal and desire. This would also affect spell casting, and maybe even attack rolls. However, bonuses would likely be given to diplomacy(only when seducing) and to Perform: Sexual Techniques.  Thinking that the penalty would be increased by one for each day that passes. First day(start of the period) would be -1/+1, the fifth day being -5/+5, and so on.

A medusa is a possibility, although the gaze attack might cause problems?

I have no problem with the medusa.  Within the context of the game, we can say that there are a great deal of magical wards in Belleron that would prevent the stare attack within the confines of the Green Dragon Inn.  In case the medusa wishes to leave Belleron or go into the War Tower, special accommodations would have to be made.  The proprietor wishes to prevent the petrification of random bystanders.

I would vote Pathfinder.

What about the possibilities of playing two characters(sisters) at the same time?

Also, would not being very familiar with Eberron be too much of an issue?

You may play two characters at the same time -- I am!  And I love the sisters.  I can't wait to see them about and around in the brothel. :)

You don't need to know very much about Eberron.  Belleron, and the Green Dragon Inn specifically, are fortunately deprived of the drama between the five nations.  Your characters do not need to originate from Eberron, either.  They can come from Greyhawk, Ravenloft, the Forgotten Realms, or a custom setting.  The point of the Green Dragon Inn is that it is a nexus that almost exists out of time and space.  I just placed it in Eberron because I like the setting.

In regards to the Noble Houses that operate out of Belleron, you won't need to specifically go to them to solicit help.  You can always go to the proprietor or one of his many employees, and they can direct you on the way.

The article I linked to earlier says that, in most civilized parts of the world, Medusas are required to wear 'eyeblinders', which are attached via leather straps that go around the head and under the chin.  They're apparently some sort of intricate bondage contraption that requires a full minute to don or remove. :P

And if you'd like to fit the sisters into the Eberron Campaign Setting, it sounds like they'd fit in quite nicely in the Eldeen Reaches, a northern country primarily covered in a massive forest.  It's home to several Druidic sects, and the sisters sound like they would have grown up in a community with strong ties to the Greensingers sect, which is a fey-oriented Druid group. ^^

Might do a custom setting then, have them happen upon a portal recently, how does that sound? They would be new additions to the Green Dragon Inn if we went with that setup.

Kimera

I'm still not ntirely sure I'll go for a medusa. Still looking over some other ideas and concepts

EroticFantasyAuthor

If it helps, I think a Medusa would be awesome. Always liked the picture in the Pathfinder Bestiary, good inspiration.

Kunoichi

Yeah, I think you could probably play something like a Medusa Bard and wind up with both a compelling character and a reasonably powerful build. ^^

Kimera

Guess we'll have a full female group then :p

Phantom's two characters are both male, but it certainly does seem like there'll be a female majority.  Of course, I doubt that's something he'll be complaining about. :P

So, since you're going with a Medusa, any interest in getting a DC 31 Fort save on that Petrifying Gaze of yours? ;D

Edit: Also, if you really want an extra male character or two in the game, I wouldn't mind building some sort of monstrous manservant who would have been sent out from Droaam alongside your character.  A Medusa and a Gargoyle would make for a rather interesting duo, for example...

hard to say no to that  ;D

Not sure what class I would give her though. Bard sounds nice, but a snake themed druid or cleric might also be fun.

Alternatively, a drider also came to mind. With it's 10 levels savage progression granting wizard spells and the other class perhaps being cleric to give divine spells ;)

Then again, in eberron driders are somewhat different aren't they?

Kunoichi

Yep.  Mostly because the Drow are pretty drastically different, being a mostly tribal people who live on the far-off continent of Xen'drik.

As for getting the DC 31 Fort save on your Gaze, that's fairly easy.  It's Charisma-based, so the key to start is to pump that stat up as high as possible.  18 base, plus 4 racial, 2 from level, and a +6 item would get you Charisma 30.

After that, take the Ability Focus and Irresistible Gaze feats, and spend more of your starting wealth on a Veil of Allure, and that will be +6 to your Gaze attack, as well as +2 on Enchantment spell DCs.

The total for your save DC from there is 10 + half your hit dice from class levels (5) + Charisma modifier (10) + an extra 6 from feats and items.  That totals up to 31. ^^

That almost absurdly high Charisma score should also help you be useful in other areas, too.  I recommended Bard for the other half of your gestalt, mostly for the 6+Int skills more than the spellcasting, but you could also probably do quite well as a Sorcerer, Wilder, or any other class with a strong Charisma focus.

Kimera

A medusa paladin/blackguard would also be something

Kunoichi

You'd have really high saves, at least, though Medusas aren't really built for melee combat. ^^; Warlock would be another possible option, and there might be some useful prestige classes out there, as well.  I'll have to look into it more when I get back from classes in a couple of hours.

Kimera

not that familiar with the 3.5 warlock to be honest.

Kunoichi

It's sort of a spellcasting class, but instead of getting access to several spells, with limited castings per day, it gets access to a limited number of spell-like abilities that it can use at-will.

Kimera

Sounds interesting. Will have to take a look at that then.

Kunoichi

Alright. ^^ The spell-like abilities are called Invocations.  The class is in Complete Arcane, and there are a few extra invocations in Complete Mage and Dragon Magic.

Kimera

As another character concept, I'm also toying with the idea of reviving/adapting this character for this game: Arachne

She's basically a drider divine oracle.

Kunoichi

She could certainly work. ^^ You wouldn't even have to change her backstory if you didn't want to.  You could just say that she was born on some alternate material plane and wound up in Eberron somehow.  Though, if you want to have a decent number of levels in Divine Oracle at ECL 10, I'd recommend picking one of the two arcane caster choices for your racial casting, and put the levels in Cleric and Divine Oracle together on the other side of the gestalt progression.

Kimera

*nods*

I was thinking of going sorcerer for the driders casting, since her charisma in her old version is her second best stat.

With the gestalt, she would have 10HD, does this affect her sorcerous spellcasting progression?

Kunoichi

#102
Hmm.  Under normal circumstances, I would say that that would probably be a little too overpowered to allow to see play...  However, this isn't a normal game.  Phantom's already said to not worry about whether or not something is overpowered, so I say go for it. ^^

In fact, in that case, you could probably just use your innate casting for Cleric spellcasting anyway, and take an arcane class for your other side.  You could take levels as a Wizard and use the Spontaneous Divination ACF from Complete Champion to get access to any divination spell in the game through your Wizard spell slots, for example, which would be great for an oracle like Arachne.  Plus, you'd still be able to qualify for Divine Oracle like that, since five levels of Wizard could easily satisfy the necessary skill requirements. ;D And Divine Oracle can be used to progress Wizard casting, too, so you won't lose out on spell levels on either side.

And since the fifth level of Divine Oracle doesn't have much in the way of class features, you could take some other arcane casting prestige class for that last level to get some other nice abilities, too.

Edit: For example, Arcane Devotee from the Player's Guide to Faerun would both fit your character concept and give you a really nice ability, and it would be very easy to work into your build.

Kimera

Well I'll see what Phantom has to say about that.

If allowed though, the arcane devotee would be a nice addition. Divine disciple might also work as a lvl 1 dip for an extra bonus domain

Kunoichi

That would certainly work if you used Cleric for your class levels. ^^ In that case, you'd probably be better off taking Sorcerer for your innate casting, since you won't be getting any other class features to go along with it.

Wizards do have some pretty good alternate class features spread around various books, though.  You could specialize as a Diviner, for example, ban Evocation, and trade in your familiar for a nice class feature that adds several small benefits all at once, including Sense Motive as a class skill.  Or there are other benefits you could get from specializing in alternate schools of magic, as well.

Though, alternately, levels in Cleric would get you Rebuke Undead, and thus access to Divine Metamagic...  Either way, I think you'd be able to get your character to a point where you'd be really happy with how she worked mechanically. ;D

Kimera

#105
I think so too :)

Edit: How do you calculate the saves between the two classes in gestalt (best of the two at the end of the 10 levels)

Edit2: Too bad this isn't lvl 12 gestalt, a succubus//sorcerer would be so mean

Kunoichi

Your Drider hit dice are Aberration hit dice, which only have good Will saves.  Clerics, Wizards, and the various prestige classes you'll be taking will all have good Will saves and potentially other good saves, as well, so I'd say you can just calculate your saves normally and ignore the Drider half of your progression. ^^

Personally, one Eberron game I'd love to play in would be a level 20 gestalt game based around being high-ranking members of the Lords of Dust.  That seems like it could be a really fun campaign. ;D

Kimera

Thanks

And indeed, a Lords of Dust game would be awesome

I am not really sure.  I am not familiar with the race.

My answer would be... Depends.  If she has sorcerer levels on the opposite side of the gestalt, yes.  If the sorcerer levels are wholly dependent on the race, then the level wholly depends on one -- and only one -- side of the gestalt.  That being the race.

The basic Drider race gets six levels of racial spellcasting from the player's choice of either Wizard, Sorcerer, or Cleric casting.  What Kimera was asking about, however, was the Savage Species monster class for the Drider, which specifically states that 'The Drider casts spells as a character of its Hit Dice'.

The basic intent is pretty clear, since the Drider monster class gets six hit dice and regular Driders have those six levels of casting, but the actual wording is vague enough to allow other interpretations.  I kind of took advantage of similar vague wording while building Kulzu, mostly for the purpose of determining the save DCs on her poison sting. ^^;

As for the skill list it's just combined skills, Hide and Move Silently become Stealth, while Listen, Search and Spot become Perception, etc.

Edit: Oh and for easy of use with character sheet like Mythweavers and such, just put the same skill ranks into both Hide and Move Silently as if they were one for example, or would you prefer that we edit the skill list?

Hide and Move Silently become Stealth, Listen, Search and Spot are Perception, Speak Language, Decipher Script and Forgery are folded together into Linguistics, Diplomacy has Gather Information incorporated into it, Disable Device gets Open Lock added on...

I think that's about it, as far as which skills are consolidated together.  There were also a few other skills that got folded into other mechanics in the Pathfinder system, but we can just keep them as regular skills for this game, and it shouldn't be too much trouble. ^^

Incidentally, Kulzu is now a master forger who speaks every language listed under the Speak Language skill in the 3.5 SRD. :P

EroticFantasyAuthor

And there's also Balance, Jump and Tumble becoming Acrobatics.

Kimera

Extra feats, yay!!!  ;D

In the other game, Arachne had managed to become a tanari ousider. She basically had used planar ally to summon a glabrezu and managed to get a wish from it.

I sadly realise she can't cast planar ally yet in this setup

So...  Remember that Medusa Bard character that Kimera was briefly considering before he settled on his old Drider character?  And also that Gargoyle that I offered to make to get more male characters in the game? ^^;

Euryale, Medusa Ambassador // Laertes, Euryale's Gargoyle Bodyguard
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The young and ambitious daughter of a Medusa noblewoman living in the city of Cazhaak Draal in Droaam, Euryale wished from a young age to travel the world and see the finer things in life.  She studied the arts of magic and music, of song and dance and spell, and eventually, when the Last War ended and the Daughters of Sora Kell began to piece together their fledgeling nation, she was made an official ambassador to the outside world.

In order to watch over and protect her as she went about her political duties, Euryale's mother gifted her the massive Gargoyle warrior-slave Laertes as her bodyguard.  Bred to be larger and stronger than most of his kind, smarter and more charismatic, yet at the same time steadfastly loyal to his new mistress, the two were expected to make an excellent pair as they traveled the world together.

It's just a pity the trio of Hags didn't factor in the young Medusa's odd sexual inclinations...

Yep.  Level adjustment is still in effect.  You only have to worry about it on one side of your build, though, so it has much less of an impact than normal.

Dawn / Stephanie
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

They grew up in a loving family, raised by not just their parents, but grandparents & relatives as well, including close family friends.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

((From an old campaign - Dawn is Purple, Stephanie is Teal))

"You're quite welcome! I'm always happy to help!"She knew he was a bit distrustful of magic, but hoped that with time, and further displays of how helpful magic can be, would help him to lose that distrust. She couldn't help that wide almost wickedly naughty grin from spreading over full pouty ruby painted lips as he offered to repay her and promptly cut himself off.

"Oh you don't need to repay me" She'd say as she leaned over once again, even further than the previous time. Allowing herself to slightly press her upper curves against Rarovan's side her hot breath was felt on his ear. Her soft voice heard in a whisper that would tickle Rarovan's ear-drums. "Though I certainly wouldn't refuse if you wanted to show your appreciation... I bet no one would notice if I slid into your lap once the entertainment starts" She'd pull back just slightly looking to the stage, lingering enough to allow Rarovan to follow her gaze. Whatever tonight's entertainment was, would be such a good distraction for some public naughtiness.

The buxom blonde seemed to straighten up in her chair a bit as she heard the shouting in orc. Only relaxing after it seemed there was no danger and the servers where just being ordered to bring them more wonderful ale. "Thank you for the refills!" She'd declare with a bright smile "It just soooo good! I can't get enough!" An expression of pure ecstasy briefly crossing her beautiful visage before that long nimble tongue slowly traced her lips in a seductive lick, all for the server's benefit. She'd wink at him before turning her attention back to table.

She could tell that the hyper curvaceous catgirl was starting to really enjoy the ale, having had more drinks than the blonde. She herself was starting to feel the wonderful side-effects of the alcohol. That warm feeling beginning within her stomach and slowly radiating out to the rest of her body. What little inhibitions she had would melt away with the more she drank. So much so that when she was properly drunk, her hands tended to wander. After having quite a few drinks, tt wouldn't be long before would they toy and caress over her own body periodically, but they also had the habit of doing so to any near by friends.

Not to mention that the alcohol served as a catalyst to ignite her already easily excitable desires, getting drunk always made her rather horny. Even sex was better when she had had something to drink. She couldn't help but wonder and hope that the alcohol had a similar effect on Catalina. She did of course plan to find out before the night was over. Now however, her attention had drifted to the stage, curious to she what type of entertainment they were all about to be treated to.

If there are still spaces, I should like to throw my hat in the ring.

I'm not super familiar with Eberron, but I have a few concepts floating around that I would like the chance to write. The first that comes to mind is a Minotaur Cleric of a storm or earth god (not sure who that would be in Eberron, but I can always just make one up) by the name of Khalus Ironfist. I also have a Warforged Monk concept, a straight plankton-standard human fighter and a Dwarven Wizard or Sorcerer concept.

Been a while since I played with 3.5 but I think I can gin up a character sheet over the weekend if there is interest and room for one more.

Well, in Eberron, you can simply say "I worship storms" and get divine power.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

PhantomPistoleer

There are two elements that I would like to address:

The first is, this is supposed to be a character repository.  The purpose of the game is to bring back characters that you fell in love with, and put them somewhere where they might see the light of day again.  I mean, I sort of feel like everyone really hopped on the crazy "let's build the most OP character ever!" train, which isn't what I initially wanted to undertake.  I understand that people want to try out different things with their characters and stuff, but when everyone is pouring through the Monster books to empower their characters, it gets a little... well, it goes against the nature of the game I initially set out to create.

Yes, the inn has all manners of weird characters from different worlds, and they might be completely unlike anything that the people of Eberron have ever seen.  The inn is like the Mos Eisley Cantina, with a wide assortment of creatures from all over the Planes of Existence.  But you don't NEED to build an outrageously powerful character to have fun.

The second thing I would like to address is, you don't have to have any ties to Eberron.  You don't need to worship Eberron Gods.  You can worship Gods from the Forgotten Realms.  You can worship the Gods of Greyhawk.  You can worship the God you created for a custom fantasy campaign that you played in ten years ago.  The Green Dragon Inn is like Planescape.

Lastly, in terms of character creation, the only thing that I really don't care for is Homebrew, and the only real reason for that is that I really don't care to review mechanics or balance.  It's really why I never cared for psionics.  But as far as the mechanics of worship and deities, you can really go all out.  You want to build a character that was the Queen of a large Kingdom?  Sure!  That's all good.  You want to build a character that is the avatar to an ancient God from another realm from another dimension?  Sure!

But the point I would like to address first and foremost is, the character should have already been created in terms of background and plot.  You are just customizing him or her for the setting.
Always seeking 5E games.

I really hope I didn't seem too munchkin with my concepts. That really is NEVER my intention. Please do believe me. Sorry if it came off that way. In retrospect and having actually LOOKED at the stats for them, minotaurs are pretty crunchy... might be a bit much.

When I create characters, I tend to go from the idea to the stats. I have never played 3.5 enough to be able to make unbalanced munchkin-y characters and even if I could that's not really what I go for. The whole basis for the Minotaur character was an image I found once upon a time. Khalus Ironfist was an NPC in a campaign I ran (an all too brief campaign) who happened to be an ally of the PC's. A hard-drinking, hard-fighting warrior priest who spent as much time doing good works for whatever community he was passing through as he did swinging a sledgehammer.

Can I give you an example? I can give you an example... this was a 4th ed. character who was more fun than he should have been. No special powers, no particularly unbalanced stats but he was FUN. If you'd prefer (and if you're willing) I'd just as gladly dig up Nicodemus and play him

= = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Nicodemus Scipio Arkhosianus
= = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Scion of Lost Arkhosia and Heir to the Scipii

Brash, confident and utterly convinced of the innate superiority of the Dragonborn species and of Draconic Life. Nicodemus feels a mixture of compassion and impatience for what he refers to as "the soft-skinned" races, and hopes by his example to educate these ignorant but well-meaning heathens. He sees the infidel softskins as children and tries to be patient with their lack of understanding.

Nicodemus can often be patronizing and arrogant, forgetting himself and talking down to the 'lesser' species. He treats any suggestion that Draconic species are not superior as laughable and somewhat insulting. It isn't so much an opinion as a fact and article of faith.

Though he may be arrogant, Nicodemus is honourable, compassionate and courageous. Evil must be stopped, Good must be preserved, the weak must be cared for and the rich must be shown that it is their place to uplift those less fortunate. He hopes by his shining example to inspire all peoples, Draconic and softy alike, to rebuild the lost glories of the past. He would gladly give his life for what he believes and would sacrifice all he has and all he will ever be to reach his goals.

What he will never admit is that much of his arrogance and conceit is an act. He has dedicated his life to an ideal that is half dream, half lie and he is determined to make it real by sheer force of will.

Overconfident and patronizing but possessed of a wry wit, Nicodemus will talk for hours about the advantages of his Draconic Pantheon, waxing lyrical about the glories of Bahamut, the dangers of Tiamat, the power of Typhon One-Eye, the strength of Yormungandr, the Wisdom of Aszi Dahak, the greed of Fafnir and the unbounded power and perfection of Io the Great.

He will tell grand tales and make absurd claims about the glories of the lost empire of Arkhosia and the roles his family and ancestors played before its fall. He will make claim to ridiculous honours, his by birthright: Quaestor, Aedile, Tribunus Governalis of Arrisia and more. He also claims that Dragons or Dragonkin invented any aspect of learning, civilization or technology millenia past, and lament the sad state of current technology as a pale shadow of past majesty.

Tall and powerfully built, like all his kin, Nicodemus presents an impressive figure and he uses that to his advantage, acting as though he has more authority than he does. With scales of burnished copper and eyes of bright emerald green, his upright stance and fierce belief help lend him the authority he claims. He tends his weapons and equipment carefully, polishing and sharpening them daily and spending at least an hour each day on his grooming rituals. His prized possession is his Holy Symbol, which is worn on a circlet and sits centered on his forehead at all times when he is awake.

Nicodemus is gregarious and friendly, in spite of his arrogance, and prefers words to violence. When he can, he will defuse a battle with a jest or a few well chosen words, accompanied by some of whatever alcohol he has handy. Though not violent by nature, when angered Nicodemus is a terrible foe. He will charge into battle, often spouting battlecries or bizarre epithets. He is fierce in battle but magnanimous in victory and happy to grant quarter to any (as he calls them) "infidel softies" or "heathen apes" who ask it.

The one race he considers true equals of the Dragonborn (or the Chosen of the Gods, as he considers them) are the Warforged. With their hard shells and their magical nature, they are obviously superior to the soft-skins who created them. It is a troubling philosophical idea, but Nicodemus has seized the opportunity and happily proselytizes to Warforged and softies alike.

Don't worry, I don't think you seemed too munchkin with your concepts.  I think the main problem Phantom is having is that he wants for this to be a character-focused game where players can break out old characters that they loved playing as and get a chance to revisit them, but for the last few pages, it's been nothing but talk about the mechanics of the game and people brainstorming new characters. ^^; I'm a bit guilty on that front myself, since I've been helping people with mechanical suggestions and character concepts.

I think Khalus Ironfist would fit perfectly well into the game, myself.  He sounds like he'd be a fun character to have in the game, and I can foresee some interesting interactions with my tiny little Imp character, Kulzu. ^^

ShadowFox89

Well, the only character I could possibly bring from a previous game is my kitsune Rogue, Zitka.... but she was made for Pathfinder and uses a race not found in 3.5 (or one that would have a hefty LA)

Oriental Adventures has the Hengeyokai, actually.  The link goes to 3.0 material, but they got an update in Dragon Magazine #318.  The only real changes were they they went from being Type: Shapechanger to Type: Humanoid (Shapechanger), and they got their Level Adjustment lowered to 0.

I think a Fox Hengeyokai would fit your needs. ^^

ShadowFox89

That does indeed work for what I want.

What I am planning, if it doesn't seem too cheesy to our fair DM, is: Rogue 10//Swashbuckler 3/Spellthief 4/Shadow Dancer 3. Rogue is her mainstay, everything else is just a bit extra.

I was wondering if I could use an enhancement from Pathfinder? Specifically: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/magic-weapons/magic-weapon-special-abilities/agile

It would save me three feats >.>
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

I'm guessing those feats are Martial Study, Martial Stance, and Shadow Blade?  If so, and if Phantom says no to the Pathfinder weapon property, you could probably save yourself two feats by taking at least one Swordsage level in place of Spellthief levels.

ShadowFox89

I'm still kicking things around, but probably just going straight rogue//warblade. Really, the only class the 'needs' to be there to stick to the character concept is Rogue, everything else is just added mechanics.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Ah, alright.  If you'd like a more magical Kitsune character, though, Rogue 10//Sorcerer 5/Spellwarp Sniper 5 could be pretty fun.  Lots of Charisma, good skill points and access to social skills, and you could turn those indiscriminate AoE spells into rays, which would have all sorts of benefits.  You'd be more of a ranged character than a melee one, though...

ShadowFox89

Yeah, I'm trying to stick to the original concept as much as possible ^^'

Which is to say, a slightly socially awkward kitsune cutpurse who tended to try and manipulate others and had a large fondness for shinies. Also tended to use two shortswords.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Hmm.  Daggerspell Mage is a caster/sneak attack prestige class based around using two weapons...  But since you'd be a mage/spellcaster, melee combat isn't exactly where you'd want to be without relying heavily on buff spells.  I think that that Rogue//Warblade idea you were thinking of before would probably fit your character concept a lot better. ^^; Tiger Claw has all the dual-wielding maneuvers in it, and you could probably have Diamond Mind as your secondary focus and be a very precise fighter in battle, which would make for an interesting contrast to the social antics out of battle.

tcost

Are new players still being accepted?

I have a halfling wizard whom I played through the entire length of the Living Greyhawk campaign, and of course I would like to find a new home for him.  He finished up at about 10th Level as I recall, and he was built for 3.0 and then revised when the campaign switched over to 3.5.

Since LG was kid-friendly and this is not, I will be tweaking him a little bit for the Inn here.  Also, I'm not the same person as I was a dozen years ago when I first built him, so I will also be tailoring him to better fit me -- provided that there are still openings in the game, of course.

I don't think Phantom ever set a cap on the number of players for this game. ^^ New players are always welcome.

I've been kinda glancing at this thread repeatedly for the past week or two and I'm finally leaning towards caving in and joining if there's still room, but I have one concern.

I have absolutely 0 familiarity with gestalt characters, so... I'm pretty sure I'll mess something up xD
O/O: I was going to make a barebones F-list as a rough summary, but then it logged me out and I lost my progress, so I made a VERY barebones F-list instead: Here.

Gestalt is fully explained here.  It's basically a high-powered variant where you get to level up in two classes at once.

I've found that it's actually a slight throwback to the old Dual Classes system, except you don't split the XP. Dual Classes goes back to 1e advanced.

:o huh, that makes sense.

I'm sort of familiar with Dual Classing from the old Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale)

Edit: I'm also not terrible familiar with Eberron. I'm looking online, but could anyone tell me if there's any region in Eberron relatively analogous to Spain?

I also don't have that much experience with Eberron, just the basic stuff, but it doesn't matter that much :)

Yeah, your character doesn't have to be from Eberron.  The basic idea for this game is to dig out old characters that you really enjoyed playing and then have a chance to play them again, so characters that aren't from Eberron can easily have just wound up at the Green Dragon Inn due to some odd planar alignment or something like that.

That is disappointing to hear  :-(

I'm sorry if I seem impatient, I'm just rather eager to get started  ;D

I would still love to play this one, although I would have to finish up my characters stats then

Then again, if this is a social game, how much would stats matter anyways?
