  • This is a Shadowrun 4A Game.
  • It is set in Seattle.
  • It is rated Nonconsensual-Exotic.
  • I am looking for 4-6 players.  I may go higher, but will probably divide it into two groups if so.
  • If you are interested, please include in your post a 1-3 word description of your proposed character’s role, as well as a 1-2 paragraph summary of their personality, background, and so on.

If you are accepted, when you create your character please ask before using anything from a secondary book.  If I don’t have the book, it won’t be allowed, some other things (emotitoys) won’t be allowed as well.  Generally things from the Runner’s Companion and Arsenal will be allowed, but as I said, please ask first.

He was an attractive human male.  Middle-aged, with his brown hair just starting to go grey.  He was dressed in an expensive suit, one that probably cost more than most people made in a year, and wore a pair of fashionable glasses.  To his left and slightly behind him was a buxom young redhead dressed in a tight blouse and knee-length skirt.  Her eyes were slightly unfocused, as if she was reading something that no one else could see.  Those that had done their homework knew that the man was Marcus Whital, CEO of a major independent corporation.

“I don’t care what your history is.  I don’t care what crimes you have committed.”  Marcus informed the group, his voice deep and his eyes scanning those he had gathered together.  “I am willing to ignore any of that and pay very handsomely if you perform a simple task for me.  Protect my daughter.”  He paused for a moment, waiting for that request to sink in.  “Twenty five hundred nuyen a day, and expenses, for an undetermined period.  You will keep her safe without interfering with her day to day life.  If all goes well, there will be a sizeable bonus paid out at the end of your service.”

The image that came up was of an attractive young woman.  Brown hair like her father, lean and athletic, with a haughty air about her.   Marcus didn't look at the image, his eyes still focused on his prospective employees.  "She has her nineteenth birthday in two days.  If all goes well, I won't need your services after that night."

Anonymous Web Blog: The Ouroboros Bites It’s Tail

I’m not going to tell you who I am.  If you need to know you already do.
I’m not going to barrage you with street jargon to give myself legitimacy.  That stuff is all over the net.
I’m going to talk about snakes.
They’re an old symbol lodged deep in metahumanity’s collective mythology reminding us that every life form exists by feeding upon something else alive.  We have existed their way, in a sort of brutal harmony, since millennia before man first descended from the trees.
But man isn’t a harmonious animal.  The same intelligence that makes a slow, thin skinned hominid with neither claws nor fangs an apex predator allows us to break that harmony.
Many ancient cultures understood this well enough to predict that our own hungers might consume us.  When the ancient Norse spoke of the end of the world they described the Midgard Serpent, a monster who—in its insatiable hunger would devour all the world and then—with nothing else to devour—swallow itself.
The image of the snake biting its tail has other meanings.  The Ouroborous is a purer representative of the serpent, an ancient alchemical symbol of renewal and resurrection on par with the fiery phoenix that is reborn from the ashes of its own funeral pyre.
Hunger is natural.  The Midgaurd Serpent is not a force for annihilation because it defies nature, but because it exercises it’s prerogatives from a position of vastly unequal power.  Neither gods nor giants can reign it in, much less vanquish it.
Today, in the 52nd year of the sixth world, a dozen Midgard Serpents threaten to devour us all.  Their mass media devours our dreams.  Their frivolous products devour our resources.  Their unchecked pollution devours our environment.
We sleep while they nibble at our toes.
Unlike the Midgard Serpent, these apex predators—whom neither gods nor giants can challenge—war ceaselessly with one another.
I am a shadowruner.  I am a fang of the Ouroborus.  Sleep in peace, little snakes, you need not rise up against your oppressors this night.  They will bite their own tails.

Cassanra Kiesling, known on the streets as Fang of the Ouroborus (or just Fang) is the daughter of a professor of the arcane arts who was abducted by corporate agents with an unknown agenda.  Hoping to find him, Fang used her magical abilities to become a Runner.

Shadowrun is pretty darn exciting.  I, too, would like to express interest.

TheGlyphstone

Shadowrun got its hooks into me in another, more freeform game, and I'm definitely interested in exploring the crunchy bits this time.

Will there be help available for character creation? This would be my first full-system SR game, and I've got questions about the cost/benefit of hyperspecialization and whether it'll hurt my ability to contribute if I play something deviant to archetypes.

AndyZ

I'll help out if you want, Glyph.  I know the game very well.

Right now I'm thinking a hacker, although I can change that if somebody else really wants to take that role.  I'll give it a bit before I flesh all that out for that reason.

TheGlyphstone

That was one of the two roles I was considering, actually, depending on the answers to my questions, but it's also not something I'm set on.

AndyZ

It's not one I'd recommend for new players, though I'd still cede it if you wanted it.  What's your other idea?

TheGlyphstone

Physical adept brawler or gunrunner...see the PM I sent, that will be a good way to make the decision now.

Sethala

I'm interested, and I have the core rulebook, but I've never played the system before.  If someone's willing to give me a hand with figuring out how it all works and helping build a character, I'd like to join.

Having been playing a lot of Deus Ex lately, I think I'd like to focus on a stealthy fighting-type character, maybe a little ability to hack but mostly good at sneaking around and knocking out guards.  Preferably with non-lethal methods whenever possible.

Jaded

Looks good Muse.

I'm willing to assist people who need it, though I will admit I am probably a bit rusty.

An Adept could work for a sneaky type, with Killing Hands allowing you to do stun or physical damage unarmed.  Or you could get more or less the same result with Cyberware or Bioware I believe.

Things that give an extra initiative pass seem common to take, so you might want Improved Reflexes (or the cyberware equivalent).

Sethala

I'm looking at my book and thinking the Covert Ops template fits mostly what I'd like, mostly changing the weapons for nonlethal ones (tasers and such, as well as gel rounds for a pistol, though she's willing to use lethal force if necessary and carries some standard bullets as well).  Probably also going to get some cyberware that improves her fisticuffs, though I need to read through that part of the book still.

Anyway, character bio:

Lorelei Clemens, Covert Ops

Lorelei initially worked as a thief, stealing from various corporations in order to make a small living for herself.  Eventually, she started to take on bigger and bigger jobs from clients, and would have made a lot of money had one of her clients not decided to double-cross her, leaving her for dead in an alley.  Thankfully, one of her friends and frequent clients managed to find her and get help, barely saving her life.  Much of her body had to be replaced with cyberware, including both arms, but she was at least able to survive.  She still works as a covert spy and thief, but is much more choosy about her clients.

Even after nearly being killed, Lorelei has a cheerful personality, and is often very optimistic.  Because of this, while she's not afraid to get into a fight with someone while on a job, she refuses to actually kill anyone if it's not necessary, preferring to knock them unconscious instead.  The only exception is the client who betrayed her - if she ever finds him again, she has no reservations about putting a bullet in him.  She does realize that most people aren't as pacifist as she is however, and won't try to stop someone from using lethal force in a fight, though she will try and stop them from killing someone that's already helpless.

Thorn14

I'd be game.

Would a sniper not fit the campaign style do you think?

Also someone should make a Pornomancer  ;D

A sniper could fit I'm sure, though back up skills are probably a plus for when things get close-in/confined. ;)

Yeah I hear you.

For anyone who wants to mess around with character concepts, I recommend using Chummer. Its a great character builder.

So far I'm thinking of someone who really doesn't like getting into the front lines, focusing as a sniper and recon using drones so MAYBE some moderate rigging going on.

Trilogy

I might be interested, if there's still room? I've always wanted to give Shadowrun a try.

AndyZ

Seems like there's a lot of people who are very new.  Maybe I should just help out with people instead of making my own?  I know the system exceptionally well.

Settling on a Troll PhysAdept as my planned character.

AndyZ

Aiming for a hacker if nobody else takes it.  Named Zed, male but doesn't spend a lot of time in the meat.  Friendly while inside the Matrix, though.

I believe with you it would make 6, assuming everyone else is still interested, so there is still room if you'd like to join. :-)

Yes.  Shadowrun: 4th Ed. 20th Anniversary Core Rulebook is what I'm using.

All the concepts sound good so far.  :-)

Do we know who, if anyone, is going to take driver?  Or will one be provided?  Not that Zed really needs one...

Cool.

So, my first charbuild question...apparently Trolls with Bows are really scary things, but it looks like my rate of fire would be real low compared to carrying a gun because it takes 1 action to reload and 1 action to fire, effectively using up a full Complex Action to shoot a single arrow. Is there any bio/cyberware or Adept Power that makes Ready Weapon a Free Action, the way Nimble Fingers makes Insert Clip and Remove Clip Free Actions?

Thorn14

Could I ask for a bit of advice on Drones?

I figured I'd take a few micro drones, one crawler for combat, and maybe the iball someone can take with them while my character provides recon or carries while on the field.

I need pilot programs, autosoft, signal, ECCM, and what else?

AndyZ

If you want to control them manually, you need a Command program, a commlink with enough Response and System to run that Command program, and the skill like Gunnery and the various Pilot skills.  If you want to let them just do their thing, though, you don't need all that.

Glyph, there's a couple of good Adept powers like that in Street Magic.

(Also a nice one called Sustencence.)

Don't forget to get together a list of the things you want form non-20th aniversery edition sources adn send them to Jaded.  :)

So, I just noticed that there's actually a pacifist drawback I can take.  Would someone willing to get into non-lethal fights (fistfights, using primarily stun weapons when armed, etc) still "qualify" for it?

Muse

ISn't one of the versions of that drawback, "Won't kill"?

Yeah, but also specifies that she tries to avoid violence, so I wasn't sure if getting into fistfights would be "allowed"

Probably to control them only when needed, so maybe the crawler and one plane drone.

Otherwise they are there for support fire and recon.

That's where I found Nimble Fingers. I couldn't find a power like the one I was hoping to find in Street Magic, so I was asking if anyone knew where I might find it if it existed.

Okay, I'm working on a character now but I have to look over the core book first. Just making sure people know I didn't disappear after one post  ;)

From what I know about the setting, and from a quick glance over things, I'm interested in making a Technomancer, if that would fit in this campaign (or wouldn't be too complicated for someone just starting out in Shadowrun.)

Sethala

Ok, planning out my character, current sheet-in-progress: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=573486

Haven't given her a name yet, because names are hard damnit, but her backstory involves a frequent client saving her life.  Originally I planned on him (or her?) just doing it because finding someone that's trustworthy nowadays is pretty difficult, and it's easier to save her than to find someone to replace her, but I'm wondering if any of the other players want to take that role in her background.  Let me know if you want to come up with some connections like that.

I also noticed that there's rules for having roommates sharing a lifestyle (each extra person increases the cost by 10%), and was wondering if anyone wanted to say they're her roommate.

I'd probably say no.  If the character is willing to fight as anything but the last option, I don't think it would fit for them.  Of course, if they always try to go out of their way to avoid it (longer route or such when sneaking), and just use non-lethal when there is no other option, it would be fine.

Cassandra Kiesling was rasied by her father, Professor Eric Kiesling.  (He's a fair skinned guy with light brown hair and beard.)  He and Cassandra's Mother were never married, separated when she was 5, and lost touch completely when she turned 13.  (She's 22 now.)
Eric was a professor of both Arcane Studies and Philosophy at a university.  Eric's blog aggravated a number of megacorp high ups.  A little over a year ago Eric published an article, "The Ouroboros Bites His Tail" wherein he extensively described the self destructive nature of the megacorps and the society they sustain--going so far as to ponder if Shadowrunners would accelerate the self destruction to the point where the world serpent--the corporations--would devour themselves without taking the world with them.  Two days later, he was abducted in the night and hasn't been seen since.
Cassandra doesn't known if he's dead or not, but she suspects that if their purpose were to silence him they would have showed some sort of sign of his fate. Fearing she would vanish next, Cassandra snagged all the resources she could and disappeared to Seattle.
In a part of town where the Yakuza had more power than the police--she got a job as an exotic dancer.  Under the name Katrina Jackson, she set up a new life and prepared herself to become a fang of the Ouroboros herself.
Upon discovering a minor free spirit with the ability to aspect it's domain to their shared paradigm of magic, she courted an arrangement with the spirit.  She took a loan from the Yakuza to buy the old house where the spirit had taken up residence and now lives there with a friend and sometimes lover of hers from the dance club--Hikari, a Japanese girl with neon blue hair.
She still owes the Yakuza 15,000, with 10% monthly interest.
Her Yakuza contact is a grabby young man named Takahashi Kyou.
She doesn't know a Johnson of her own yet, but is putting the word out that she'd like to run the shadows through Kyou, a student of her father's who is now a talismonger, and a gal friend who posts blogs.
She has also begun posting her own blog column--through a few layers of anonymity provided by her blogger friend, which she calls The Ouroboros Bites it's Tail," both as a statement and to draw out those who may still have her father.

She's going to be focused around technomancy and social skills- a 'net idol' online socialite who is much more timid/unassuming IRL, who's taken to running because of the lack of other ways to make a living/feed her online ego addiction as a Technomancer. So I won't step on anyone's combat toes, at least ;)

Is there any scale or table in one of the books that estimates what ability or capability equates to what Attribute level? I saw a big chart in S20 about total dice pools in regards to skill comparisons, but nothing like, say, what IQ having a Logic attribute of 2 would reasonably be RPed as.

AndyZ

Quite welcome, Trilogy

Glyph, I believe a 3 in an attribute is average

We don't have a face, right?  I was putting together a face.

EDIT:  Oh, oops, I thought I was being counted as one of the 6, but it looks like I'm not.  Well, I'll keep making my character, and keep me in mind if someone drops out?  Thanks!

There is a spell called Orgy?

I'll cede the role so Trilogy can play a Technomancer ^_^

Did you want to play something else instead?

Yeah, I kinda figured.  Oh well, it was only 5 BP.

Currently trying to figure out how I want to spend skills and what I want to get.  Any suggestions from you guys?  Already putting a lot into Stealth group, Athletics group, Pistols (specializing in Tazers), and Unarmed Combat.  Possibly Influence group too.

It would depend on how you see your character.  Those would probably be the key ones.

Sorry, I missed your message.  As we are lacking a Face as far as I know, you're welcome to join as one.

Most of my other concepts would require inordinate amounts of alternate books, and I'm good with giving the last spot to Flying Tengu.

Orgy is in Street Magic.

Great!  Thanks very much!  I'll keep at it.  I've got an idea for a child of privilege gone rogue; a character with a strong upper-class background, who left the corporate upbringing for... some reason.

Sethala, as far as other skills, escape artist and locksmith might be useful for a thief, and key off of agility.  Hardware is also good for overcoming maglocks and similar security devices, but unfortunately keys off of logic, so that might be better off left to a mechanical sort.

TheGlyphstone

Is it strictly necessary for an adept to have stealth/athletics skills? I'm running kind of thin on BP, and while I could pick up some more Negative Qualities, I'm not sure if there's a game-or-GM-coded limit on how many bonus BP you can claim from negatives.

Sethala

Yeah, I'm thinking I might put a point or two into computers group, but it won't be a very strong one for me.

Right now, putting a hold on buying skills until I figure out what gear I want and figure out contacts, then I might tweak skills a bit more.

Thanks for pointing out the spell.  :-)

Okay, sorry.  If you'd like to play a recurring villain or something you are welcome to.  What all books would be required for one of your alternate concepts?  I'm not entirely opposed to other books, I just like to know what is being used from where in advance of looking at the character sheet.

35 I think is the limit, though that is off the top of my head.  I'm not sure it is required, though athletics at least would probably be helpful.

That means I can get another 20 BP, which would be 2 points of the Athletics skill group, so that works out well.

For a new player, would you allow the 10-point Amnesia quality? I generally consider amnesia to be a lazy way to get out of writing a background, and puts additional work on the GM, but it would let me fill in the blanks during game and simplify character creation.

Sethala

Ok, going through to buy items now.  What limits are there on starting gear?  I believe I can't take anything with a rarity higher than 6, but is it possible to get Restricted and Forbidden items?

TheGlyphstone

...Can't believe I missed that rule, but it was staring me in the face. Looks like I know where another 10 of my BP are going for Restricted Gear.

Flying Tengu

As I understand the rule, you can't get gear with a quality higher than 6, not rarity.  Rarity can't be higher than 12, and I don't think R or F matters.  Except in that they're illegal, of course!

TheGlyphstone

Yeah, it's Rating cap of 6 and Availability cap of 12.

There are rules (6/12 sounds right, though I don't have my books onhand).  There are qualities if you want to take something beyond that.  I don't think restricted or forbidden require anything special unless they are above that availability.  They are just not something you want to get caught with without a license.

Flying Tengu

Well, I've managed to get things mostly done.  I've still got 6 bp left, if anyone can see any gaping holes in my mechanics.  Then, I need a street name, something Russian.  Tsarina?  Nikita?  Anyone else have any ideas?

Name: Talia Suvorov
Alias:

Talia was born to wealthy shareholders in the EVO company.  An old family, they were only moderately wealthy until EVO relocated to Russia, at which point their star rose rapidly.  Although given EVO's relatively open policy towards metahumans in positions of power, Talia's parents were still not so pleased to have a metahuman, even an elf, in their family tree.  As such, while Talia was raised as a child of privilege, and educated her as though she were going to be given a position in the company, it became clear pretty quickly that the talents she was developing would never be put to use.

That wasn't good enough for Talia.

Feeling little loyalty to a family that had no need for her, Talia struck on her own.  She briefly entertained offers from other corporations for low-mid level positions, but she decided that working for herself would be better than working that far from the top for someone else.  She moved into the Shadowrunning game with great enthusiasm, enjoying the challenge of finally using the skills she was trained to use.

Taila is an elegant young woman, with pale, aristocratic features.  She has expensive tastes and style.  She is fiercely independent, does not want to be beholden to anyone, and resists becoming a permanent member of groups.  She does, however, very much enjoy being temporary members of groups, especially groups that respect her skills.  Despite having the traditional elven thinness, her (mostly; a few gene treatments included) natural beauty has gifted her with generous feminine curves.

They may or may not be all they’re cracked up to be, (like Andromeda) but he gets it right often enough to be steadily growing his brand. Good for contacts in the VR entertainment and music industries and parts of the coding/hacking community that tend to be his patrons.

Background (Still needs a little work)

Andromeda (Persona)

Katie Andrews, on the surface, had a very boring, ordinary childhood. She was raised by a middle-class family working for a medium-sized corp. A quiet, reserved girl, she never had more than a few friends, and tended to prefer reading a book or using the Matrix to interacting in person. Katie Emerged as a Technomancer at a very young age. Her parents were the permissive sort, always trying to encourage the seemingly timid Katie to open up and try new things, so they allowed her to use full VR very early.. just in time for the Crash.

After waking up in the hospital, slowly but surely, Katie’s powers began to develop. At first they caused her to retreat even further into herself, the constant stream of data barraging her senses making it difficult for her to interact with either world, but as she began to grow into her abilities and tune out the unnecessary noise, she began to become intrigued, spending more and more time exploring the newly rebuilt Matrix. Then, one day, while diving into some deep, hidden node, she discovered a being that changed her life- Idoru. The Paragon reached out to her, and in a moment of contact revealed her true nature, the real purpose behind her Awakening. She wasn’t just some middle-class corp-kid destined to be a housewife or desk jockey like all the rest. She was a scion of the Matrix, part of a new breed, the true inheritors of this new, better world. In meat space she may be Katie Andrews, but here, she was Andromeda. Here, she could be a Queen.

It didn’t take long, of course, for her parents to notice the change in their daughter, spending more and more time in full VR, until finally they caught on to her new powers, finally estranging her from them completely. Rather than complicate things, Katie moved out as soon as she was of age. She had work to do, after all, and would prefer to not involve them.

Since then, Andromeda has been steadily gaining influence and popularity amongst the up-and-comings of the Matrix’s social scenes, particularly the club and hacker/technomancer circles. She’s become something of a ‘Net Idol,’ known for her alluring, ever-changing Persona designs, her appearances at important VR club shows, her occasional virtual graveur photoshoots-- and her always implied (but never confirmable status) as a Shadowrunner and Technomancer. She has to make a living somehow, after all. Popularity hasn’t started to pay just yet, especially when she can’t reveal her meatspace identity.

Online, Andromeda is flirtatious and talkative, with a quick wit and occasionally fiery temper- worlds away from the quiet, timid Katie. Which, given the amount of time she spends in VR, begs the question: is Andromeda Katie’s alter ego, or is Katie Andromeda’s?

Hope everything looks ok. My question is- can I take the Fame quality as Local, and have that count on the Matrix instead of in a physical location? As in, her online identity is famous throughout parts of the Matrix, but people wouldn't recognize her in meatspace.

Background

Magic and 'wares just don't get along. It's a fact of existence that everyone knows, and accepts. Organic vat-grown bioware might weaken an Awakened person's essence less than pure chrome, but it's still hostile to magic, and too much of the stuff turns a mage mundane like everyone else. But you don't get ahead in life by sticking too close to the party line, even if the party line happens to be the one reality is touting...which is where the Transcendence Project started, in the brains of Evo's board of directors filtered down to the megacorporation's black-ops R&D department. If they could develop new strains of bioware, special designs compatible with Awakened minds and bodies that would work in harmony with Essence instead of poisoning it, they would have a lock on a market no megacorp even considered potentially feasible. New cultures had to be grown from scratch, using biomaterial harvested from Awakened plants and animals - and new test subjects would need to be acquired. From the belly of the underclass, Evo merc teams began a systemic hunt for adepts and magicians, kidnapping them and spiriting them away to a short and extremely unpleasant new life as live testbeds for the experimental Awakened bioware designs.

Roadblocks in progress inevitably appeared, but the science teams hardly faltered - rather than wait for a breakthrough in tempering biowares to be Essence-friendly, why not temper Essence-users to be more bioware-friendly? They continued to kidnap and experiment on SINless magicians, but this time focused on using their already patented and well-developed nanotechnology to rework captives on a genetic level, 'softening' them to make their bodies more receptive to implantation. One of these second-generation subjects was a troll, of no particular note or consequence except for a very high level of magical sensitivity and potential and the bad luck to be scooped up by an Evo scout team. In the hidden labs, surgically tormented and invasively altered on a daily or hourly basis, his base genetic structure was rebuilt nearly from the ground up to be a prime test-bed for the upcoming new set of experimental 'wares, and his abused body healing at supernatural rates to compensate. The team of Shadowrunners who busted up the lab didn't know who he was, had never met him, and didn't even know what they were destroying, only that rumors of a top-secret bioresearch program had leaked out, and a rival megacorp had decided to get proactive in market competition. Almost everything burned, but a few samples and subjects escaped in the confusion, including our nameless troll, whose adept powers had again blossomed to appropriate need, gifting him with magically enhanced stealth to creep free of the ruined laboratory and away from the Evo cleaner teams that came to sterilize the site.

Alone, penniless and identity-less, his mind in tatters, he made his way one step at a time to Seattle - not aiming for the city in particular, but it ended up where he stopped to get fixed up after being injured by a small band of Humanis Policlub-aligned thugs. He snuck into the nearest street doc clinic he could find, with the handful of credsticks he scraped off the would-be mugger's corpses, and nearly gave the doctor a heart attack of his own. Trolls simply couldn't be that quiet, and the fact that one was standing in his clinic was a genuine paradox. With no better name to take, and no idea who he was, where he had come from, or how he had come into possession of top-grade bioware that was clearly custom-designed specifically for him, Paradox took his first steps into the world of Shadowrunning.

It went fairly well, as such things do, and he gradually built up a nest egg that he liquidated into more and better equipment to make his jobs easier. But he still had bad dreams, of shiny steel tables and equally shiny steel knives, voices reciting complex formulae while drills and needles ravaged his body. Sometimes the dreams came while he was awake. He had been somewhere, wasn't supposed to be here, and figured eventually someone would come looking for him. Being ready for when they showed up seemed like a good idea.

If you have finished a sheet (even if only a draft), or when you finish it if you haven't, please post it there so I can more easily find it.  Thanks!  For those people with finished sheets, I rolled starting nuyen and recorded your damage tracks, please let me know if I made a mistake on those.

Almost done with my sheet!

One question though: do contacts have to be single people, or can I take a group of people as one (assuming all members have roughly the same capabilities)?

As Xerial noted, there are rules for group contacts in the Runner's Companion.

Hope everything looks ok. My question is- can I take the Fame quality as Local, and have that count on the Matrix instead of in a physical location? As in, her online identity is famous throughout parts of the Matrix, but people wouldn't recognize her in meatspace.

For Local Fame, I would allow her to be known in certain parts of the Matrix, though not all of it.  Probably social gathering spots on the Matrix for people from Seattle.

I'm almost done, just need to figure out what else I want to buy with starting cash and what contacts to have, and possibly figure out what other PCs I know before the game starts.  After that I might have some more BP to toss back into skills, depending on what I have left over.

Sheet in progress: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=573486  (Items are listed in the notes at the bottom of the sheet, haven't plugged them into the right categories yet.)

You can, though something that isn't close combat/stealth may be best.  Heavy weapons may be an open area, if Thorn14 is going more precision.

Oh, dear...

Glyphstone, you should check the rules on bows again.  Last I heard they couldn't benefit from strength higher than eight!

I just looked at my copy of Shadowrun 20th Anniversary Edition, and it says bows cap at Strength Rating 12. Was an errata for the core book published somewhere?

EDIT: Self-poking around found an 'update errata' for the SR4 book that was meant to list the changes from SR4 to SR20th, and it does have the 'Bows cap at Strength 8' clause plus an 'arrows are hella expensive' clause, but both of those are then missing from the 20thE book itself. So I'm crazy confused now.

If it's simpler to just make a houserule capping Bows at a lower max Strength rating (which seems to be the consensus across a large number of various message boards, since it's unclear whether the fix in the SR4 update PDF was meant to carry over into the actual SR20E book or if they decided to revert the change between the update printing and the full book release - everything except that change looks like it went into 20E as-written), I can live with that...though the huge surcharge on ammunition is kinda painful, considering bullets don't pay more based on their caliber, and it'd make any non-standard ammo impossibly expensive (400 NY per Explosive Arrow or Screamer and 40 per regular/hammerhead arrow is 2x the bullet cost for regulars and 5-8x the cost of specials).

Muse

That's weird. the 20th anniversary edition book is supposed to include all of the eratta.

TheGlyphstone

It is weird, because every other item they mention in that errata document is present in the 20thE book exactly as printed. The only thing they didn't carry over is the modifications to bows, and since there's no actual SR20E Errata itself, I can't tell if that was deliberately left out while making the other changes, or if it somehow got skipped over.

Flying Tengu

I've got it in my copy.  First full sentence on page 316: "Material science limits high-tech bows to a maximum Strength rating of 8."

Ah, that's the next sentence.  "Calculate base damage using the lower value of the bow rating or the arrow rating."

Eesh.  That would get pricy.  40NY per shot.  On the bright side, I think for the fancy arrowheads, you buy the base arrow, and then swap the arrowhead for a flat fee.  So explosive arrows would be just be 50NY.  I think.

Since I'm tired of giving you bad news, can I suggest that with your high body score, you might enjoy getting some tough armor.  Buy an armor jacket, add a helmet, laugh as nothing can hurt you, but you can still move freely.

I'm going to hold out and hope Jaded takes mercy on me and houserules away the arrow Rating rules and surcharges. Particularly since, by strict wording of the chargen rules and the new bow/arrow clause, I also can't buy arrows or a bow with a Rating higher than 6 at start, despite being strong enough to fire a bow much bigger/more powerful. So using a bow means I would have to completely re-buy all my weapon and all my ammo after our first successful mission.

As for armor, I've got a Chameleon suit already (Agility 7+Infiltration 5+Chameleon bonus 4 = NINJA TROLL), I suppose I could add a helmet to it.

I figured my sniper would have 3-4 flying microdones for scouting, one of those rollyballs for inside places, and an armed walker that can be controlled. And maybe something else if someone has any good suggestions.

I might give my sniper a slight phobia for blood and always prefer to work from a distance or by proxy.

You could grab the Bow with the Restricted Gear rating, and I'd allow you to get a few Arrows of a higher rating with the same.  I'd prefer to avoid house rules for now.

I'm fine with arrowheads being swappable.  I would also say arrows are reusable (if you can recover them), unless they are used with incendiary or explosive heads (or are otherwise destroyed).  ;)

Where did you get the 400 nuyen price for explosive arrows?

I'd take a glance at the Drone Rigger sample character in the book.  You'd probably want at least one each of the Autosoft programs, with a Maneuver for each type of vehicle you have, and a Targeting for your armed drone.  As well as some of the other programs (ECCM, Command, Encrypt, etc).

They add abilities to the drone when they are operating remotely I believe.  Page 245, under Issuing Commands, mentions it.  So if you aren't directly controlling the drone, it allows it to have more versatility.

Restricted Gear allows Availability up to 20 instead of 12, it doesn't modify the maximum Rating. So that's no good. Besides, I'm capped out on Positive Quality points.

I don't know where I got the 400/arrow for explosives, actually - I think I momentarily confused Damage rating with Rating. Assuming Explosive arrows need a Rating like normal ones, they'd cost Rating*10, so 60 nuyen/shot at the maximum Rating 6 I'm allowed to have.

If it's not feasible to...well....make starting with a bow feasible, I can just get some rinky-dink little pistol, focus on melee with Killing Hands, and buy a suitably kickass bow and arrows once we complete our first run. Alternately, I start with the weaker bow, and after a run, take it to an archery store somewhere and have it retooled for a higher draw strength (if that's possible, I don't know bowyery at all).

Sethala

I would say it makes sense to let you pay the difference between your current bow and an upgraded one to change it in.  Possibly with a little less "trade-in" value for your old bow, but either way not make you pay the full price for the new bow that replaces your starting one.

Then again, I don't know how Shadowrun's economy works terribly well, so...

Jaded

My understanding is that it can be installed in any number of drones as it is just a program.  It just has to be (for maneuvering/targeting) the right type.  There are rules in Unwired for copy protection, but I'm not going to worry about them for character creation.

I'm not sure if you could upgrade a bow, as it might be the materials themselves that aren't up to the job.  I might let you trade it in, but not straight upgrade.  Let me think on that.

If I may be so bold, Glyphstone, 8 damage is a hell of a lot.  I don't see any reason to respec your character away from using a bow just because his arrows don't hit like tank shells.  They still hit harder than military rifles, after all.

It's not 8 damage, though...it's 6. 8 damage I could live with, and eventually buy up to 10....but the rules say you cap your damage at the lower of the Bow rating or the Arrow rating, and while a Rating 6 bow would deal 8 damage, Rating 6 Arrows only deal 6 damage, equivalent to a low-grade assault rifle or a good heavy pistol. I can't burst fire or full auto fire with a bow, the way I can with most firearms, so it's 6 damage per shot compared to 8-12 damage/shot at no recoil penalty.

One arrow from a bow = DV6, no AP, simple action to shoot (would be a Complex action to shoot+reload if I didn't have the Quick Draw adept power). Costs 30 nuyen per shot.
One burst fire from an AK-97 w/ Gas-3 vent, underbarrel weight, and hip pad brace = DV8, AP -1, simple action to shoot, and costing 60 nuyen a shot.
One full-auto burst from said AK-97 = DV11, AP -1, simple action, no penalties on the first shot and a -1 penalty on the second shot. Costs 120 nuyen a shot, so the most expensive option though.

Even a mundane heavy crossbow would be DV7, AP-1, single shots only.

Thorn14

Sound suppressors are pretty cheap.

I'm not looking to cheese or powergame anything, I'm just trying to find a way to make bow-fire not inferior to guns in pretty much every way. Being stylistic and cool is a fun OOC concept, but IC my character is LOG 3, so average intelligence, and knowingly choosing a favored weapon that is unusual and thus distinctive (makes him easier to track) for the sole purpose of making his job of hurting people and breaking things harder is very hard to justify. That, and it's getting increasingly complicated OOC, which I don't like as a new player, I just want to be ninja troll.

Of course, I could always pull an end-run around the cash rules by spending the bow+arrow money on a Standard Credstick, but that's both very weasely and would need cooperation from a PC with actual Negotiation to help me in the Availability test.

That's not the interpretation I'd take from it.  Arrows don't have a listed damage, only the bow has a listed damage.  It's under the bow where it says to "Calculate base damage using the lower value of the bow rating or the arrow rating."  Since there's no calculation given for arrows, just for bows, I'm 99% certain that it just means to use the lower of (Arrow rating) or (bow rating) for the bow's damage of (STR Min+2).

Besides, if it were otherwise, there'd be no point to Rating 7 or 8 bows, and that's weird.

Up to you what weapon you go with, of course.  Snapping dudes' necks is also fun.  You could probably pick two guys up, and bang their heads together!

Sethala

Yeah, I think I agree with FT; you use whichever rating is the lowest, then add 2 for the damage.  It's a bit wonky because the table lists "strength minimum" instead of "rating" +2 for bow damage, but there's no strength minimum on arrows.

TheGlyphstone

#103
Snapping necks means disposing of bodies, though, and is a good way to get the heavy squads sent out after you. And I'm pretty sure banging two dudes' heads together means I have to find the grappling rules, bane of RPGs since the dawn of time.

As for the Bow/arrow damage...I like that reading, but I don't know if it's right. A Rating 8 bow would just need Rating 10 arrows to do max damage, so even more money/shot.

Maybe this is all intentional, and the designers actually wanted bows to exist, but be a clearly inferior/more complicated option than just bullets? It'd fit with the stylistic tone of the cyberpunk genre, since bows are decidedly non-futuristic and non-punk, but I wish it was clear if that was their plan. Not that DV14 anti-tank rifle arrows were actually better...at least in 3E you could have a 'bow' firing arrows made from rebar, which while very silly could probably punch through armor.

I'm not sure that you can take the Hawk Eye quality along with cybereyes.  Otherwise, a decent sniper rifle, your drones, possibly a van if one of your drones is large.  Maybe something that boosts agility such as muscle replacement (not sure how it works with the arm offhand, would have to look that up).  Something like that great coat line for armour, as it adds to concealability.  Not sure what else offhand.  Maybe a grappling hook.  Otherwise, just usual mix of stuff such as your comlink and similar.

I would assume that you only need an arrow of the same rating as the bow to get the str+2 damage.  So a rating 6 arrow would do 8 damage.

AndyZ

It's the same reading I was just about to post myself.  You factor the lower, then add the 2 for the bow.

If you have Runner's Companion, there's a 5bp positive quality Restricted Gear which lets you buy one particular thing of up to 20.  Jaded may let you buy the bow and arrows as a set (which makes some pretty obvious sense) to only have the 5bp once, if she allows the quality since it's not in the core.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

That quality does not allow higher Ratings, though, as previously mentioned, only higher Availability, and those are two separate limits. I'm also capped out on Positive Qualities, and couldn't lose either of them (Adept or Type O system) without literally rebuilding my character from the ground up.

Jaded has ruled the happy way on the bow/arrow damage, though, so I'm better off to start after all. I just need to reassess my cash expenditures to account for the cheaper bow and more expensive arrows.

AndyZ

Guess I missed it before. Sorry

Well, I need to leaf through the sections again after work, but I'm not seeing much I actually want to get for cyberware/bioware.  So I may skip out on that for now and just worry about lifestyle price and what skills I want to cut back on (kinda went overboard picking them, to be honest), and then pick out a contact or two.

For now though, my (currently slightly over-budget) character: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=573486

Thorn14

Hopefully I did this right. Will upload fluff soon.

Actually I was quite a bit under-budget until I decided to go on a skill shopping spree :P

Quite a few things I don't think I need, so pruning will be easy.

Ok, I'm just about finished with the character, only need to figure out lifestyle and a few minor things to drop some extra money on (probably more ammo).  I'm thinking either one month of medium lifestyle, or two months of low.

Before I pin that down though, does anyone want to have their character as my roommate?  We actually pay less for two people living together (it's an extra 10% per person, but we can split the cost), and it gives us a reason to know each other a bit more.

Muse

I wouldn't mind, Sethala, though I already have down a Depednent NPC Roomate, so it would be three.  *shrugs*

I did. Athletics 2, Electronics 1, Stealth 3.

Could you note them somewhere on the sheet itself please?  Unless I am missing them, has been a long day ;)  Thanks.

-=-=-

Anyone who has finished their character (or at least a first draft) please post it in the character sheet thread, I'll start going over them in detail as I have time, though it may be a bit to get through it all.  Once everyone has posted a sheet, I'll start the IC as I look over them.

Trilogy

Slightly modified and posted my sheet. I upped my Fame quality to National and took the 5 point Day Job quality to balance it out.

I'll see if I can. Chummer doesn't do it apparently.

Oh shoot I need to get fake licenses too. Guess I still need to tweak my sheet a bit...

== Background ==
Marisa was borned to a small mixed Japanese, Cinese, Caucasian, and Hispanic family in the middle of Chicago when her family moved out just 3 years before the infamous Bug Incident in Chicago. Her family was devestated by this news but lucky that they were able to get out of the city before the mess even happened. The loss of her friends and the horror Spurred Marisa to join the military of the UCAS where her skills at marksmenship earned her a place in the Special Forces. Early on in her earlier missions, one of her squadmates turned rogue, betraying their country and wiping out the remainder of her squad and leaving Marisa to die, covered in the blood of her new friends... Having survived she begged for a chance to take down the traitor but the UCAS said the traitor had gone into foreign lands. In a foolish rage, she quit her position and set out on her own to find the traitor, living in the streets and teaching herself to become a sillent assassin to finish off her target. A few years later, she finally put 1 between the head of her target. It felt good, too good. This had to be the job for her...But was t right? Learning from the streets and improving herself, Marisa has become a shadowrunner, working for whoever needs her talents in recon and assassination, all the while wonder if this was the life worth living or not.

Not a contact, Sethala, a dependent.  ^_^;;

There could be three girls in Hathoway House though.

Ah, didn't realize that was a mechanical thing (I only have the 20th anniversary book, no supplements; apparently dependents are in RC).  Yeah, that works, just need to figure out what the cost would be for the apartment.  What would the monthly cost be for each of us, then?  I have no idea what dependents cost...

Muse

Here's Hathaway House:

Hathaway house
In the middle of a run down neighborhood currently controlled by the Yakuze is a house over a hundred years old.  Called Hathaway House, it looks particularly ramshackle on the outside—save for the extensive gardens of herbs, vegetables, and even a few flowers tended by two puttering drones—but inside it’s been heavily restored by it’s tenants.

The primary reason this house slipped through the cracks is the minor free spirit who took up residence here early in the fifth world.  She’s shy, and a little mischievous, but her influence makes this a great place for a hermetic mage to live and work.

I don't remember seeing anything that detailed about homes in my book, is that all stuff from RC?

Jaded

I posted the IC thread, feel free to post your arrival and banter back and forth if you have posted a sheet in the character sheet thread.  Thanks!

Runner's Companion has a section for more detailed lifestyles.  So you two are going to be roommates?

Muse

*smiles*  I hope so.

And Huzzah for the starting of the game!

And yeah, once I finish everything I can put it into text if you'd prefer, Jaded.  (Though to be honest, you're the first GM I've had that asked for text instead of web page.)

Muse

3,500 a month, Sethala.  Unless you want me to take on a little bit more than an even split since so much of it benefits magicians.

Sethala

Nah, that's fine.  What quality does it count as for starting income?

And, is it supposed to be a flat rate per person?  I know the base rules only add 10% of the cost per person beyond the first...

Muse

Counts as Middle for starting cred.

The total comes from multiplying 8,000 by 1.3 and then dividing by 3.  So we can accommodate one guest above and beyond the three girls living there.

Hikari and Cassandra have day jobs dancing at a yakuza run strip club.

Sethala

Hm, that gives me an idea for Asuna, actually; she might have found a few contacts with that same yakuza (and that could be how she met Cassandra and Hikari).  So my contact might be someone at the club, possibly with Asuna working as a bartender there for a front.

Muse

*smiles*  good idea.

If she's still working there, you could take Day Job.

Sethala

Is that something else from RC?

Muse

Yep.  Negative quality 5-15 points, depending on whether you're obliged to work 10, 20, or 40 hours a day.

Upside?  It also provides a small quantity of non-runner based income.

I'm assuming that's hours a week, as working 40 hours a day might be... challenging.

But yes, I was looking for a 5-point negative quality, so that works perfectly!

*laughs*  indeed.  :) Sorry about that.  :)

With Wired Reflexes 1, you could technically work 48 hours in a day, or at least get equivalent labor done in certain professions. :D

I like to keep a local copy, and couldn't seem to copy and paste easily from myth-weavers.

Sethala

So, I also just realized I never bought a vehicle.  Should I fix that, or can I get by without one?

TheGlyphstone

I don't have a vehicle either. I guess I'm using public transit or something.

Sethala

Fair enough.  I've never actually been to a city with decent public transportation, so I've really got no idea.
