This RP is currently not accepting new characters: if you have shown previous interest in the game or have been working on a character before this topic was locked feel free to still send a character sheet to Revenent.

The Premise:
It is thirty years after the events of Final Fantasy VIII and this game follows the lives of the students at Balamb Garden, an elite military academy, that trains young adults to be mercenaries. There are many reasons children are accepted into the ranks of any one of the three Gardens: Balamb, Trabia, and Galbadia.  Enrolling between the ages of five and fifteen, some students come as orphans, some to gain power, some fame and fortune, and some for a better life.  Whatever the reason almost all students are accepted into the Garden and complete their training between the ages of fifteen and nineteen, depending upon their ability, perseverance, and skill.  There are three ranks or stepping stones within every Garden- Cadet, Candidate, and SeeD- and if a student has not reached SeeD status by the age of twenty they are dismissed from the Garden.  Those that are released typically enlist in various armies and are highly valuable despite their lack of SeeD title.

All three Gardens are now politically neutral: typically fighting on either side of a disagreement as long as that side has the money to pay for their services.  Before the defeat of Ultimecia, Galbadia was firmly on the side of the Galbadia army and actually on the side of the Sorceress Edea at some point.  They were given the option to become neutral or risk being removed from Garden Status.  It was an easy choice, to ensure they maintained their power they agreed to a neutral standing on all issues: even giving up their rights to grant SeeD status.  Balamb Garden is currently the only Garden able to officially grant SeeD status, Trabia having lost the ability to do so as well with the missile attack thirty years ago.  The other Gardens are able to train Cadets and Candidates and most students transfer to Balamb when they wish to apply to become SeeD.  It is also the Garden that houses the most abundant number of SeeD mercenaries, holding the most weight as a political power because of its exclusive rights and regulations of SeeD members.

SeeD status individuals are essentially property of the Garden and have high status in most situations due to the Garden's backing and rarely get a choice in missions or sides to pick from.  If a SeeD mercenary is demoted from their position they will find themselves shunned by most of polite society due to the Garden's reputation as a professional business but the criminals and the desperate are not above picking up the dropped fruit.

Current Threads

Common Threads
We currently have our own sub forum if you would like to take a look at all the threads we currently have going on.  These are the most common ones desire to those considering joining.

Things to Know:
This is a continuation of previous attempts at a Balamb Garden Group Game: as it stands those that were active in the game previously have had the first dibs on characters/weapons/Guardian Forces and the like and now we are recruiting for new blood.  Some of these characters also have a rich predetermine history that has been RP'd out: and some of the main plot as already started however, it should be easy for new characters to slide in.  Balamb Garden is a mostly free form RP game: this means characters/monsters and the like to do not have stats to work with.  This also means that a player must be careful and aware that not every hit is going to land and not every bad ass move is going to work out correctly: please try and write accordingly.  There is a plot line and there will be missions that characters will need to complete throughout the game.  Some missions will tie directly into the plot line while some will be entirely for fun.  The GMs and their assistants will be handling NPCs for missions as well as enemies that characters will meet in combat, but, aside from missions and the planned plot, there should be plenty of 'free' time for the characters for adventures or subplots as a player deems necessary.  All characters currently created for this game will fall under the rank of Candidate or Cadet (explained in the Information Guide).  Throughout the continuation of the game characters can apply to become a SeeD at a later time.

Any other questions can be posted here, PM'd to Fenrir or the Co-GM Revenent, or addressed in the Information Guide.  Any questions posted here can be adequately answered by either GM or the appointed assistant TheHangedMan (if he answers a question on a GM's behalf he does have the authority to do so).

Characters and Guardian Forces:
We are currently welcoming male and female characters.  Cannon characters or relation to those are not allowed (however cannon guardian forces are welcomed- though the power of a Guardian Force will be considered).  Also there will be no character containing a sorceress ability (innate magic).

There are typical favorites for people as far as weapons (gunblades, guns, and apparently lances/pole arms) and specializations (magics) go  but there are TONS of other ideas for weapons as well as specializations.  Unused or less used weapons include: bow, chakram, sai, axe, kama, nunchucks, tonfa, various types of abnormal swords, etc.  Specializations has a long list of available categories as well: tactics, weapon repair, defense, communications, etc. Right now our specializations are extremely combat heavy: other specializations can and should be considered- just because a character is not specializing in combat does not mean they have to be a terrible fighter. Please keep that in mind.  However, you are not bound by either of these list and each weapon/specialization does not have to be completely unique by any means but there are a lot of holes that can be filled as far as weapons and specializations go!  I encourage you greatly to be creative with both. There is a list that is updated on the first post of the Accepted Character Sheets Thread has a list of current weapons and specializations: and if we are no longer taking applicants for a particular weapon or specialization it will be noted there.  (right now we are only restricting lances/spears/medium-long range pointed staff thingy (the category name escapes me)).

As far as Guardian Forces go: there are plenty still up for grabs!  We welcome canon Guardian Forces as well as created ones but once a guardian force has been taken it is no longer available to other applicants (so when creating a character, make sure the GF you would like is not already taken).  Guardian Forces are handled different ways by their characters: some are used more as companions while some only use them for battle.  It is possible to have your guardian force 'be it's own character' and make it's own post if it is away from your normal player character: however this is not required- I just think it's fun! If your GF is from Final Fantasy mythology I request that its special attack stay fairly similar to at least one of the games: I don't want an Ifrit that suddenly has frost flare or something so far out of the Final Fantasy realm.

Character Sheet:
All Character Creations should be posted here in this thread or PM'd to Revenent.  Revenent is currently in charge of new character initiation and he will be the main point of contact for new players and character approval.

Hmm, I'd really like to get into this, I've got character ideas in mind, but I do have a question: Is there much call for a "Face" style specialization, someone whose skills lie in negotiation and clever deception? Or perhaps more to the point, what are we lacking?
Avatar is by Lemonfont. Will remove it if he asks me to.

A leadership/commander type role would definitely be acceptable as a specialty. Like Fen said, we have a lot of combat heavy specializations, so that would help balance things out. Likewise, as Fen said, their combat skills wouldn't necessarily be bad, per se, but they would have a lot more in the way of non-combative skills like history, military tactics, and on the combat side of things,  defensive specialties.

To add to that, examples!

Defense:  You might take classes with Paladins and other heavy armor types, to know what defenses to use when.
Tactics: These classes would be based more in dealing with humans and their specialties instead of things like monsters (because Monsters don't negotiate)
History: To be a diplomat, you need to know culture, history...the basics of what not to do especially.

You might also take classes like monster geography (what monsters are known to be where), Leadership classes, and might be apprenticed (maybe, at some point) by a higher ranking member, such as a Headmaster for a garden or an already established diplomat, so that you can go into the fields and get hands on training.

Hope that helps!

To clarify, yes, someone more focused on "intellectual combat," negotiations and such, would be very welcomed.

Faeli

CHARACTER APPLICATION
Name:  Jasmine Precep
Age: 18
Enrollment Age: 8
Gender: Female

Weapon: Longsword and Punching Dagger
Weapon Description: Jasmine is somewhat unique in that she has chosen to study the longsword rather than its more powerful and technological advanced gunblade cousin.  Her long sword appears rather like a rapier on steroids, for while it does indeed have a bladed edge, the blade itself is decidedly long and narrow.  There are a series of spikes build into the base of the blade to make the blade difficult to remove once impaled through someone, although a small switch in the hilt can allow these spikes to be retracted.
Specialization: Interrogation
Current Ranking: Cadet
Victory Motto: "You'll get no Eulogy from me..."
Limit Break: Severity
Limit Break Description:  Jasmine whirls her sword in a circle twice, backing away from the enemy, and then dashes forward, leaping upon them and impaling them upon her longsword, driving it through the ground behind them as they fall backwards.  Once pinned, the girl pulls her right hand free and, with her punching dagger, punches her helpless opponent several times before grabbing the sword again and, while twisting the hilt, cruelly jerks it free.

Personality: Jasmine has a split personality or, more correctly, she has a second personality which is kept shackled and controlled except in cases where it is needed.  In her primary personality, Jasmine is a pacifist and something of a masochist.  She tries her best to get along with everyone and has something of a low self-opinion, always considering any failing or conflict to be her fault.  She is extremely agreeable and prone to accepting commands.

Her repressed personality is darker.  It doesn't speak, doesn't feel mercy, and is very much a sadist.  It is released when battle comes and joins into the fray with every ounce of vigor.  Still, it is also extremely prone to obedience.  Long years of harsh training have taught it the folly of rebellion and, despite many cadets and candidates being slightly uncomfortable with Jasmine's second personality (which is sometimes called 'Reaper,' 'The Beast,' or 'Bitch-mode' although it doesn't seem to respond to any name) there aren't many who actively fear it.

Backstory: Like many cadets, Jasmine is an orphan.  Unlike many cadets, Jasmine was extremely poorly devolopped at the time she made it to the Garden.  Combative, belligerent, and generally angry, Jasmine would frequently get into fights and would tend to take them beyond the schoolyard tussles that most fights became.  The Staff of the Garden tried a lot of things, but little seemed able to cool the rage in Jasmine's heart.  Everything that was attempted seemed either ineffective or only served to set Jasmine against the staff itself.

Eventually, one of the staff Psychologists came upon an uneasy solution... a desire to split the anger and malice of Jasmine's personality away from the rest.  It took him years to do so, but eventually he succeeded, producing a cadet who, while wearing a set of magnetized manacles, seemed actually incapable of experiencing anger.  The perfect student, she got along with everyone and obediently did what she was told.  When the manacles came off, the woman became sullen and angry, an arrow screaming towards whatever target she was given.  It still took much training to get her to obey commands, but by the time the girl turned thirteen she was an effective, if somewhat broken, cadet.

Unlike the majority of Cadets, Jasmine was given her GF.  The staff realized that some of the dumber or more morally questionable cadets might well either take undue advantage of Jasmine's refusal to defend herself or Beast's refusal to stop attacking and needed Nixie to help equalize the forces.  The ploy worked... for the most part.  While Beast hasn't actually killed anyone and Jasmine hasn't suffered as much as she could have, it does seem that Nixie allows things to pass which the staff would prefer she didn't.

Appearance

GF APPLICATION
Name: Nixie
Established Connection:  Three Years
Element:  Water
Description: Nixie appears as a naked woman with deeply pale blue skin an a small shawl wrapped around her neck, the ends draping down to cover her breasts.
Bonus:  Jasmine has slightly enhanced speed and a passive regeneration, slow enough to be a non-factor in actual combat, but fast enough to keep her at her best between fights.
Special Attack: Elemental Warding
Special Attack Description: Nixie Appears and clutches her hands before her, closing her eyes.  Her shawl slowly begins to unwind and spins in a slight circle, bestowing each of Jasmine's allies, as well as Jasmine herself, with a full-cure and the Regen Affect.

Character Journal
There is little known about Jasmine, but there are a lot of rumors:
- Nixie is sentient and will appear and help protect Jasmine in the event that her welfare is endangered, including releasing the woman's manacles.
- Nixie, being a fey, seems to have a fairly liberal idea of what constitutes Jasmine's welfare being endangered.
- Nixie can be bribed by tuna.
- Jasmine's serrated blade tends to cut through cloth as well as flesh when she strikes, much to the embarrassment of some of her less armored foes.
- There have been students who intentionally released Jasmine's Beast for the purposes of dueling.  Most ended up in the infirmary in various stages of undress.
- Jasmine could have become a Candidate several years ago, but keeps refusing to take the SeeD Test.
- Jasmine has a birthmark on her right asscheek.
- Jasmine has a larger than regulation bed, and may share it with Nixie.

Hello there - love the Final Fantasy series, so very interested in this RP.

Would a medic/healer/non-combatant be playable in this, or does the storylines require the player to be able to fight?

Revenent

Just a small clarification, Faeli: cadets don't take the SeeD test. They take the candidacy test to become candidates, and candidates take the SeeD exam (which has a written portion and a field portion) to become SeeD. Anyway, looks good to me, but we'll let you know soon if it's approved to be added to the character thread.

Only a small portion of this RP is spent in actual missions, and only a small part of those in actual combat, so non-combatants are totally fine. One of my own characters is basically non-combatant, and another prefers to avoid fighting when in the field.

Acula

Awesome - sounds great! I'll work up a character and submit it for approval. :)

CHARACTER APPLICATION
Name: Zedd Hallister
Age: 18
Enrollment Age: 6
Gender: Male

Weapon: Zedd has some basic training in martial arts, but doesn't otherwise carry a weapon.
Specialization: Black Magic
Current Ranking: Candidate
Victory Motto: You just didn't want it badly enough.
Limit Break: Tricast Limit Break Description: Mixing the powers of fire, ice and lightning, Zedd creates a coruscating wave of energy sure to cause all kinds of destruction to anything it hits.

Personality: Zedd usually comes off as friendly but intelligent and focused.  When things go well, he exudes a warm confidence that he tries to pass on to others.

Backstory: Zedd's first memories are at Trabia Garden.  He keeps a journal but rarely looks through it, as attempting to read through the past always feels alien to him, as if someone else had the various concerns and childish worries written therein.

The idea of magic in particular has always fascinated him.  Why spend years learning how to use a gun or sword when you can call forth a whirlwind to obliterate your enemies?  For that matter, why learn how to confuse or petrify them when you can simply destroy them with eldritch power?

In his youth, that quest for power drove him to perpetual practice, but into his adolescence, the road of isolation so common to SeeDs concerned his instructors.  He was given Seraph, a holy GF who inspired more of a sense of compassion within his heart.  Although he didn't really develop any major interest in White Magic, he could still use Seraph to help when his friends were hurt.

As he got further through his Candidacy, it became apparent that he was likely SeeD material, and he was transferred to Balamb Garden to see if he could properly qualify.  He still has a road ahead of him as well as brand new friends to make, but he expects to put forth that effort with the same zeal that has helped him to master darker magics.

GF APPLICATION
Name: Lakshmi
Established Connection:  Zedd has had Lakshmi for a few years now.  In many ways, she provides a sort of moral compass to him, keeping him from simply abusing his abilities or letting his power go too far to his head.
Element: Holy
Description

Bonus: Energetic.  Zedd always seems to have enough stamina, whether only needing to sleep for four hours a night, able to call up enough power to keep casting spells without easily wearing himself out, or just being ready for another sexual romp.  He can remain conscious to keep casting even when his body is in broken ruins.

Zedd claims that she also influences luck in small ways, giving him minor bits of good fortune, but it's difficult to tell how much of that is in his head.
Special Attack: Alluring Embrace Special Attack Description: As Lakshmi appears, her warmth and beauty suffuses those who have earned the care and respect of her wielder, healing them of damage.

Character Journal
Just when I was really starting to get used to this place and think of it as a home, I have to leave for another Garden.  Well, I guess it's just as well.  There's a lot of SeeD candidates out there, and it'll help to know as many as I can.

So far, I have to admit that I'm not very impressed.  Someone killed the Headmaster here?  Headmaster Rayco is too tough to be taken out so easily, and she's blind.  I can't imagine why they'd put someone in charge who couldn't defend themselves, but maybe I'll find out.

I've been warned about a few of the classmates.  Alyssa Deftrix is an ice queen: steer clear.  Lalo Kesko is the Garden's communal GF: everyone gets to Junction her.  One of the nurses really likes lollipops, but I don't think that was a euphemism.  The Disciplinary Committee is needlessly strict.

Big party tonight.  Hopefully I'll get the chance to meet some ladies.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

CHARACTER APPLICATION
Name:Iflanic Crysta
Age: 19
Enrollment Age: 7
Gender: Female
Theme Song

Weapon: Lance Weapon Description: A long pole-arm with a blade on one end that forks into two. The lance is very light with a little flex in it for better maneuverability.
Specialization: Healing, First Aid
Current Ranking: Candidate
Victory Motto: Your tears are wasted on me.
Limit Break: Permafrost Prisms Limit Break Description: Iflanic is able to manipulate and focus energy into her lance, which gains ice properties. This ice instantly attempts to freeze whatever it touches, which causes the enemies movement to be hampered. This effect lasts roughly two rounds, unless outside elements (such as a hot environment) decrease the effects.

Personality: Iflanic is calm, collected, and logical. Iflanic would not consider herself unfriendly, but sometimes comes off this way to others due to her quiet nature. This, with her odd habit of mumbling under her breath has made lasting friendships difficult. Her compassion is seen most often when she is attempting to heal others, and she has a very hard time watching others suffer.

Backstory: From early childhood Iflanic desired to help others. A lonely girl, she found she made friends when she helped others and showed her kindness. This began her love of medicine and would continue to influence her to this day.

When she was around 6 or 7, an attack on her tiny village completely wiped out the population - except Iflanic. The authorities took her to Balamb Garden where she has been ever since.

At first Iflanic argued that she was a pacifist, and refused to fight, but after repeatedly seeing a few younger girls get bullied, she picked up a weapon and taught the bullies a lesson. Since then, she's come to terms with the fact that sometimes you have to fight, though she prefers not too.

Appearance:

GF APPLICATION
Name: Seiryuu
Established Connection:  Iflanic has been with Seiryuu for several years, and many believe Seiryuu's apathetic nature has rubbed off on her. In reality, it is the other way around, as Iflanic attempts to befriend the seemingly unfeeling GF. Seiryuu, in turn, does not understand Iflanic's desire for peace, when the GF feels it should be power she seeks.
Element: Ice
Description: Seiryuu is a tall, blue-green woman with braided dark green hair. She has small blue scales patches on her skin. Generally nude, carefully placed scales keep her decent.
Bonus:  Boosts Healing
Special Attack: Song of the Rising Dragon Special Attack Description: Seiryuu sings a piercing song that deafens enemies and attempts to paralyze and poison them.

Character Journal

- Iflanic has unnatural luck at card games, but she doesn't understand the rules.
- Her favorite food is lollipops and is almost always eating one.
- Despite her age, Iflanic has never been on a date.
- Iflanic has few friends, but is generally welcomed on whatever team she's placed.
- Although no one has ever heard it, Iflanic is rumored to have a beautiful singing voice.
- Her classmates generally describe Iflanic as cold and unfeeling. This is an interesting error, as she can be quite hot-headed when provoked.

There's only two real issues I see here:

1. According to the Information Guide, students are dismissed from Garden if they haven't achieved SeeD status by age 20, so she couldn't be a candidate at 23. Should probably have added that to the character application layout, so my mistake. I'll ask Fen to add that note.

2. Again, something that might not have been stated as obviously as it could have, but Shiva was, until recently, in the possession of AndyZ's character Alyssa. She lost her due to the story reasons, so, depending on his explanation, Shiva could have ended up in Iflanic's possession, but it would have been a very recent development. Like, today or yesterday in terms of IC time.

Beyond that, everything looks good to me.

I looked through both the current accepted characters and the ones in the previous run of the game and Siren wasn't in either, so I think you're completely safe with that pick. Thank you for being understanding. ;D

AndyZ

Part of the reason you missed it is because nobody currently has Shiva.  She got unjunctioned about 19 hours ago.  As her previous owner's player, I'll offer that you can grab her if you want her, but will also warn that her previous owner is kinda adamant about getting her back.

(The original swapout happened because someone else really wanted her, but that player didn't stay on Elliquiy)

As Rev said, she's not currently taken but she was rather recently in character.  That does not mean you cannot have her it just means if you would like Shiva it would have to fit that story line- which as AndyZ implied it could be an interesting struggle if two characters were fighting over her but that's between you!  Siren is not publicly taken at the moment but I am working with an individual who has taken her and her sheet is not all the way approved.  (and we've been working on it since before Rev took over new characters: so no one be offended I'm looking at this sheet as opposed to any others!)  So in simple terms Siren is not available.
