Table column widths

So, Im trying to lay out a post in a specific way.  I want some text across the top and then two equal width tables (both with pictures in) below that.

What I've got so far is:

I'm a title
[hr]
[table]
[tr]
[td]
I'm some text and pictures
[/td]
[td]
So am I
[/td]
[/tr]
[/table]

But the left hand column is considerably wider than the right hand one and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

I am looking at this in my PMs - laying it out there until its needed.  Could that be making a difference?

Yeah, so apparently I'm a fool.

It's to do with the width of the images.

*nods*  Unless you resize them to the same width they may overrun your parameters.
