You should assume that you know each other by reputation only.  In time, you'll learn more about the others and can even recommend who you'd like to work with.

See, that's why you shouldn't use equipment outside your field of study without having it vetted by an expert. My T.E.S.S.E.R.A.C.T. may have a small percentage chance of turning you inside out and fusing your legs into the ground, but it won't turn you into a woman. And if it does, bonus! You've discovered an entirely new side effect that will need to be thoroughly documented.
