Dying Earth RPG--Was This Trip REALLY Necessary?

The sun is big, red, and flickering like a dying light bulb.  Ruins lie a mile and a half deep just about anywhere you'd care to dig.  The Golden Age of Wizardry was about three Aeons ago, and only the flimsiest fragments of their greatest works remain known.

This is the 21st Aeon, a pleasant period in many ways--all the greatest villainies of history lie in the past!  There are no wars anymore, most archmages keep to themselves in their nymphoriums, and in general people would rather eat and drink merrily than fight (except of course deodands and pelgranes, and their opinions don't count).

Luckily, there are still many, many opportunities for adventuresome folks.  You just need to get free of these ropes first...

Based on the Dying Earth stories by Jack Vance, this game lies somewhere between Toon, Paranoia, and Hackmaster in feel.

That sounds a truely bizarre concept.

You do realise I'm now going to have to go look for one of these books, don't you?

Pelgrane Press.

The sad thing is, if you buy the hardcopy, it has to ship from the UK.  I'll probably see my books sometime next year.  The happy thing is, if you buy the book, they give you the PDFs with it.  ;D  Or you can just buy the PDFs for about a third of the hardcopy cost and be done with it.

I'm in Ireland, so shipping from the UK isn't a huge deal.

Lucky you  ;)

I'm afraid my description doesn't do it justice, but I started giggling right around the time I read the sidebar on the Overarching Rule of Efficacious Blandishment and haven't quite managed to stop.

The quickstart rules are giving me a headache.  Am I misunderstanding, or does it in fact take a substantial majority of your starting points in order to have the skill levels that they tell you you should?

MadPanda

If you buy your five starting abilites to the suggested minimum, yes, it takes 40 of your 60 starting points.

'Starting' DE characters are not inexperienced tyros fresh off the tuber cart.  ;D

My hardcopy books have finally shipped.

And now, I must begin my efforts to recruit in earnest!  Adventurers needed for a little tour to a delightful spot called the Valley of Graven Tombs!  Come, come, who among you is up for a little picnic and some light archaeology?  Surely someone wishes to plunder a tomb or five...  ;D

I should clarify: that 8+ score is what the designers recommend.  You do not need to follow their advice, and as a matter of fact the sample characters in the rulebook certainly don't...

Also remember that you can get 6 extra points by asking The GM to roll 1d6 to determine your particular style.

Dying Earth needs characters.  Especially female ones.
