So, my idea is pretty open.  A group of BSG fans getting together to RP some fun stuff.  There's two ways it could go, and I'm open to either.

BSG-Canon:

So, this idea would be based around the second half of Season 2, where the Battlestar Pegasus is in the fleet.  Players would assume the roles of established characters in the BSG canon.  I'm thinking of a co-developed side-stpry, like what was presented in 'Razor'.

BSG-type Original Idea:

WHo's tosay that another Battlestar didn't escape the tragedy of the twelve colonies?  Who's to say that Battlestar didn't collect it's own fleet of civilian ships? Maybe it's just moving along on it's own, trying to find it's own new home?  Maybe it's an older battlestar, maybe one of the newer ones.  Who's to say?

Please post interest in this thread.

Thanks!

I'm interested, and would prefer a separate crew.  Characters in the series are not compatible with group RP, in my opinion (mainly referring to Kara on this one).  Also, I know a great system that is easy to use if you are interested.  We are using it in a BSG game on another site and it has worked out really well.

Would definitely be interested.  Perhaps a Pegasus class Battlestar and battle group on a deep space expedition that was on the way home during the attack.  Maybe they ran into an errant Base ship on patrol in the outer perimeter of colony space and had to fight defend the battle group as it jumped out.  Now they are limping away trying to strike back at Cylon lines.

Robelwell202

Okay, so that's two votes for an independant story, with it's own battlestar.  I'll leave it open a bit longer, to see if there's any more interest, and see what happens.

@kckolbe
I wasn't looking to use any particular system, per se, but to leave it free-form.  However, if the folks that sign on want to use a system, we can discuss that, as well.

@orderNchaos
I believe the Pegasus was actually a 'Mercury'-class (At least, that's what I remember from the dialogue on the show), but either way, we can work with it.  I like your idea of a battle group, with warship-escorts as opposed to civilian ships.   Also, I like the idea of extended expedition as a lead-in to the story.  Thank you!

Let's see if we can get any more interest, and I'll check in, tonight.

I'm interested, either way.

Although I admit to having a slight preference for canon I can see there would be difficulties.

I'd be interested depending on how fast people wanted the game to move and a few other things.   My vote would be for an original crew, and I like orderNchaos' ideas.

I was involved in a BSG game a year ago or so, on a different site, where everyone began normally and after a while the GM picked a few people at random to be Cylons.  It was a great idea, though it kind of fell apart in the end.  It'd be my suggestion to just keep all the PCs as colonists and then have NPCs as Cylons, that or go with kc's idea and use a system.

shooter6806

I'd be in for either story.  I can see great possibilities with Galactica and Pegasus, or with another ship that escaped the attack.  Cylons should be NPC only.  There are only a couple of Cylons who are aiding the colonists.  The rest are the enemy.  Just my .02.
Youth, exuberance, and enthusiasm are no match for age, experience, and treachery.

Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms.  Should be a convenience store, not a federal agency.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse.... A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Aribeth, I have a feeling you would make a great Viper pilot.  May not be what you were going for, though.  ~grins~

My only concern with having a military fleet is that it would require a lot of military characters and leave fewer options for civilian chars.  I'm not opposed to it, just something to keep in mind.

In addition to strongly preferring a system, I would like to see a bit more reality than in the BSG series in regards to military culture.  Ranks seemed to be handed out or taken away on whims.

There's nothing saying with my idea that the battle group 5-10 ships didn't pick up civilian transports trying to flee the cylons.  I think having the combat ship and not a whole fleet of civies opens up the possibility of more combat scenes rather than running all the time.

kckolbe

If you are wanting a lot of combat, how do you feel about using a system?

Hey, folks.

Okay...  it seems that the majority of interested people are looking towards an independant storyline, with a new Battlestar, and possibly some escorts (Since I'm not sure what actually constitutes a full-blown battlestar group (BSG), we'd have to wing it, unless someone has a canon-source for these things).

Now, as far as a 'system' goes, I wasn't going to use one, initially.  I'm fairly ignorant of how to use a system in a forum-based RP.  If someone would be willing to guide me through the process, though, I'd be grateful.

On another note, BSG  was steeped in military culture, all the way up to the appearance of Pegasus and the end of Season 2.  Season 3 was where it began to get a little wonky, as far as ranks being handed out like candy.  I can see where this concern is based, and I agree with it, but  I'm sure that it can be managed, as far as an RP goes.

Any other cncerns?

To me it still seemed rather believable though.  There was no outside authority.  Galactica was it, and with a constant fight culling the population it became a matter of "who can do the job" instead of "whose the best person for the job".  Didn't think it took away from the show all that much, of course, it was a show with a cast and that's likely why they had Viper pilots doing the job of Marine's, at times.

not saying we should follow suit in the game, just saying it didn't bother me too much for the show.

orderNchaos

I think the drama with the rapid loss of Captain and 1st officers on the Pegasus was a stark reminder of how the "decision process" worked in such a small field of eligible officers.  Field Commissions and promotions in a time of war when there is high attrition tends to be a bit of a chaotic thing but does work in the end.  Generally if you put the wrong person in command, you find out soon enough when they get killed, or get their unit killed.

Not sure about systems, don't really play a lot of system RP's on E.

As far as a "battle group" goes, since a Battlestar would be considered the equivalent of an aircraft carrier and destroyer combined, I would suggest a few fast intercept ships and a couple of heavier cruisers designed to provide support and gun batteries to defense of the Battlestar.

kckolbe

I think one could easily use a CSG (Carrier Strike Group) as a guideline:

A carrier strike group (CSG) is an operational formation of the United States Navy. It is composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers and/or frigates, and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft. A carrier strike group also, on occasion, includes submarines, attached logistics ships and a supply ship.

I can think of lots of gripes I had with the series, but they pretty much all involved Kara, so we should be good.  The only change I would suggest is that most electronic combat be done by the ECO and not the pilot.  I can see why they gave the raptor pilots so many responsibilities, since a main character was a raptor pilot, but it doesn't make much sense.

System RP is not that tough, especially when it is a smaller, custom system like the one I have in mind.  I have used this system before, and walked a lot of freeform RPers through system play.  You'll find that rolling dice isn't required that often, but that just having a character sheet prevents the tendency for players to suddenly decide their char is good at something, ESPECIALLY in this setting.  Also, it can really help to flesh out a character.

I think that while some details need to be ironed out, this is looking to be a somewhat realistic tone, which I definitely like to see.

Okay, so...  the next question to be asked is this:

What does everyone want to play?

I've kept myself neutral,, as far as the discussion of the kind of storyline, but now I have to throw my hat in.  I want to command a Battlestar.  That being said, I'm hoping that we have a good spread of 'wants'.

So, what about everyone else?  What do you want to play?

I have quite a few things that I'd like to play, really.  Right now I'd say my top 3 are (in no order) a veteran ECO (thinking of a Major), a tactics-minded Viper Pilot (LT), or a civilian ship captain.

I think the XO or the CAG would be a good position for me.  If we need a secondary Captain or something for one of the smaller ships I could do a second PC.

I don't really think we need a rules system.  This seems like more of an RP story with a bit of NPC combat.

JinxedMinx

I'd like to play a former civilian doctor who has been drafted to serve aboard the Battlestar.

Or

A JAG officer (or other non-combat office) who has recently been trained to pilot Raptors.

I am feeling more the former.

-Jinxed

The Lovely Tsaritsa

I would like playing, may be, a Rapter pilot. :-) But, I'm not good for the fast games, with many posts a week. So if this game moves quick, like that, I'm not good for it.

I also don't think I'm good, for the system game, if that's for picking. I'm not good, with them, they never make sence, to me. ::) But, if this is the free form, I would like playing, very much!

Triggvi

Can you use another player. I could play a Marine that is being trained to pilot a raptor.

Robelwell202

The tally, so far...  (At least, as I see it...  hehehe)

System - 1
Non-System - 2  (Gotta put myself in this catagory)

Also, as I see it, we have enough people to put up a descent crew for a single battlestar, as I'll list below.

Myself:  Commander

orderNchaos:  XO or CAG (your choice)

JinxedMinx:  Civilian (Possibly Colonial Fllet Reservist?) turned Fleet Doctor

kckolbe:  Veteran ECO (Please explain a bit?), or Viper Pilot, or civvie ship captain (If we have civvie vessels)

lovelylilT:  Raptor pilot

Triggvi:  Marine turned Raptor pilot.

Anyhting else, or anything that I missed?

I can also go with viper pilot/Marine. I can also do xo/cag or even the captain of the ship. When it comes down to it I can do a damn fine captain.

I would vote for a system of some sort.

AribethAmkiir

What's an ECO???   Electronic Computer Operator?  <-- just a guess.

Depending on how many players the GM wants to include, I'd suggest keeping everyone on one ship.  Otherwise you're going to have players with no one to interact with but NPCs, which could work but puts quite a bit of extra writing on the GM.

As for what I was hoping to play, I was hoping to snag the CAG position, but a simple Viper pilot suits me fine (CH how'd you know :p).  Could also be content with a position on the Bridge, Comm officer, Nav officer or something else along those lines.  Not overly picky.

Robelwell202

Aribeth, I'm inclined to agree with having everyone on a single ship.  Add to that, I'd like to have it be a full-blown Battlestar.  The reasons are simple enough, survivability, durability, range, and flexibility with the story-line.  Also, it kinda goes hand in hand with the whole 'Battlestar (whatever)' titling idea...  ;D

Everyone, I'm coming close to decision time, and I'm leaning towards the following.

Mercury-class Battlestar (See: Pegasus)
Myself as Commander
Single ship, no civvie fleet.

Please make your choices for roles ASAP, as I'll be starting the OOC thread in a day or two.
Thanks!

R

P.S.  All things are still up to discussion, I'm just trying to move forward.  Also, please feel free to PM me with any concerns, if you don't think this thread's the right place.

I will go with the Marine officer that is cross training to be a Viper pilot.

Knowing that the fleets first line of defense is the damn Viper fighter and understanding that there will need to be replacement pilots he volunteered to under go the condensed pilot training program.

He is a veteran marine officer will lots of time in grade. He is trained is a colonial space marine, he is trained to fight almost anyway you can get a human to survive in or out of a spacesuit. He was an officer that had hit the pinnacle of his career as a major. The colonial military was a peace time military and had no real use for front line soldiers and they were getting ready to put him out to pasture when the Cylons attacked.

If you have a suggested Character sheet, maybe you should post it on here so we can start working out the character ideas.

kckolbe

Well, sorry, but I'm not really interested in playing this freeform.  ECO is Electronic Combat Officer.  It's what the other person in the Raptor does.

Freeform is nothing more than story line and character interactions without rolls for skills and attacks.

Question Mark

Dude.  Dude.  You are starting a BSG game.  On Elliquiy.

...

I don't believe you understand the magnitude of this undertaking.  The seriousness of your endeavor.  The utmost import with which you must handle this charge!

I am in.  Totally in.  All the way in.  As far in as the stick up an XO's ass.  Preliminary ruminations have led to me wanting to be a civilian of some sort, likely a scientist caught onboard the Battlestar when everything went to hell.  Probably would be a weapons engineer, maybe preparing a prototype railgun, or somesuch weapon, on a Viper.  After the attack, he volunteers to become part of the flight team while still working on developing and repairing weaponry.

Question: do you have a name for the Battlestar yet?  Also, which colony does it represent, or does it exist outside of that convention?  If you're going for the unique route, I'd like to volunteer the Battlestar Hyperion.  I apologize if this has already been brought up, as I've only just skimmed the thread (such was my exhilaration).

I'm going to start the OOC/Character thread a bit later, today.  Once it's  up, I'll post the link here, and we can get started.

All I think we'll need for a 'character sheet' would be a name, 'callsign' if applicable, rank, and position on the ship.  After that, a small bio would work.

As for the ship's name, I've decided on a Mercury-class Battlestar (Ala Pegasus), with the name Ares.

How's that, folks?

Major Marcus (Marc) Callium
Call Sign: Pappy
Current Assignment: Viper Pilot

Major Marcus Calluim, handsome, dashing marine officer. Height 5’11”, Weight 175 lbs., Sea Blue Eyes and Brown Hair  His is 35 years old.
I had a promising career in the colonial Marines up until 6 months ago. Now I am rookie Viper pilot with a history of drug addiction. Quite the change from the guy destined to have Stars on his shoulders to begging the ships commander to allow him to be useful.
It all began about 18 months ago when during my tenure as The Company Commander of the Colonial Marine contingent aboard the Battle Star Ares. I did something stupid and hurt my back. Me being the tough guy I decided to tough it out until I go back to the colonies. I personal pride said that it would look bad if I had to give up my command for 45 days to get the back injury corrected. So, I started taking a few meds here and there. Meds are an insidious thing, you take them for a while and they work great and then they slowly stop working so well until they aren’t doing anything for you and you need something stronger. That is how I slowly got hooked on them, until I was taking the hard meds from less than honest sources. That was when I got caught in a colonial security sting.
I guess I was fortunate that the Commander of the ship was will to cut a deal with me over the charges. No Brig time, I would have to resign my command, get the back surgery and do the whole drug rehab thing. If I did this I would get to honorable resign my commission when we got home. Keep my rank and privileges and medical benefits and stuff. It took me almost 2 months to complete what the commander asked. I must say the hardest part was resigning my command, compared to that the rest was a piece of cake. I was not looking forward to being out of uniform but that was better than the alternative.
That was before the Cylons attacked the colonies. Here I am without a command ready to be discharged and that was the last thing I wanted to do. I showered shaved put on my dress uniform and marched my but up to the Ship Commanders office. It took 2 hour before he was willing to see me, but it was worth every second. I held my head up high and I walked into his Office.
“Sir, I know we had a deal concerning me resigning my commission. I no longer have a home to be resigned to. I respectfully request a new duty assignment. I realize I can’t be put back in command of the Marines, but I humbly ask you to make use of me. I don’t care if you only have me flying shuttle or taking out the trash, this is no time to be taken out of the fight when what is left of humanity is fighting for there lives”
The commander responded “Slow down Major, I have in intention of drumming you out of the military right now. I need every able bodied warriors I can find. Despite your recent transgressions you are still one of the finest officers in the fleet. However like you said, I can’t put you back in command of the Marine company, but what I do need right now is replacement viper pilots. After our last battle we are short pilots. That is all I have for you right now. You can volunteer for Viper duty or I may take you up on your offer and have you empty the trash on your way out. It is your call major”

That was 1 month ago and what feels like a life time ago. I have finally qualified for the Viper Pilot.

AribethAmkiir

Still here and interested.  Need to know if the CAG position is taken.  If it is, I'll figure out what else I want.
