This one requires my attention as the builder of this world!

Dan (if I may call you that?), please remember that we are over 100 years into the future. 100 years ago NASA did not exist, and powered flight was a miracle! Things have moved on considerably.

Each shuttle has 25 passenger seats and a massive cargo hold, plus two seats up front. The term "fly by wire" has a whole new meaning - the pilot's cranial implant p[lugs directly into the ship's on-board computer and the pilot flies the ship by effectively "becoming" the ship, as he/she runs the piloting software in his/her own head.

Something I may not have made clear, however, is that the MCM-1 (the ship currently in orbit above Mars) has only two shuttles and two crew members.

Shuttle 1 was piloted by Jack Monroe and co-piloted by Louise Cotter. This ship will remain on Mars and will serve as their means of getting to the orbital weather satellites and the Deimos Mass Driver.

However, Shuttle 2 will be piloted by the co-pilot of MCM-1 and co-piloted by the pilot of MCM-1, will return to orbit to bring the third load of colonists down and then will return to the mother ship and head back to Earth.

So, you are more than welcome to play that character, but you won't be sticking around for very long....

I see....well then....

May I ask what lead to the down fall of NASA and its Astronaut Corp?

Such an important organization just doesn't get disbanded for now reason.

I didn't say it had been, just that the initial funding for the first manned mission to Mars came from private corporations rather than NASA, using data gathered by the Japanese.

US Government Policy towards the rest of the world has swung, over the past 235 years, from "Let's take over everything" to "It's nothing to do with us" and back again many times. It seems to me that the current interventionist policy cannot last much longer and will soon swing to the other extreme again, resulting in the ending of all current wars and the cancellation of the space program again. The USA does not currently have a viable launch vehicle anyway and is paying ESA a lot of money to launch satellites and unmanned probes, so far as I'm aware.

I could be wrong here, but my impression of NASA is that it is a US Government Department with a lot of ex-military men at the top, and is largely funded by the military. As such, NASA's role in all this is as the overseer of MarsCorp.

It is also worth pointing out that the world has fought three major wars between 2012 and 2121, referred to as the Oil Wars. Oil War One was in the 2050s, Oil War Two in the 2080s and Oil War Three in the 2110s. In Oil War 3, Australia - which was rapidly running out of oil, invaded Indonesia to try and claim some of their oil deposits. They lost! Britain and France fought on the side of Japan and Indonesia to kick the Aussie's out! The war ended when the Indonesians set of a nuclear weapon in an Australian naval base which they'd bought from Pakistan.

I have not said what role the USA had in the war, but the chances are they would have remained neutral.

Anyway, the full world history is still somewhat flexible, to allow players to embellish their characters' histories, but the history of the Mars missions is set in concrete.

Wrong and right at the same time.

Yes the Director currently is ex military but many of them aren't. NASA biggest role currently is investigation, study and training astronauts. You have no idea what kind of training one has to go through to be fit for space flight. Therefore it is a wonderment to me that if there are shuttles being flown back and forth that NASA isn't providing the trained manpower and the crew.

NASA is a civilian agency funded by the government.

If you want to go to space, private or not you consult NASA.

Odd that the Russians never bothered.... Nor did the French....

Personally I see that last statement as being a bit like saying "If you want to do anything you have to consult us first because we are the ultimate authority on everything!

Well the ESA is a different beast in its entity but with a same mission. If you're a European company then you consult them who then talk with NASA, the EAS and NASA are very close friends.

Along with the RSA and CSA, all the agencies tend to have open lines of communication.

Blinkin

I feel as if I should make an observasion here and offer a thought.

This setting takes place more than 120 years in the future and while NASA may well still exist, there is no indication at this time that NASA has any interest in, much less the desire to produce a new space vehicle. Space exploration is already turning to commercial sources and foreign industry to put both resources and men into orbit.

This is Crrys's view of her world and if she has decided that NASA has not played a pivital role in putting manned missions onto the surface of Mars, then that is, respectfully, the reality of her world that she has graciously given us to write in. There is no point in pressing the point simply because you want NASA to be a power in her world. She's conceeded that NASA was involved, let that be enough.

I am American and I would love to see NASA return to it's glory days and the forefront of space exploration. SSadly, I don't see it anywhere in the future in the next 20 years and by then, the leaders will probably be corperate interest who can do it cheaper and more efficiently than a government funded agency could with it's massive cost demands. I also offer that aside from we American space buffs, NASA is not held in the same high regard by many others in the world. Who's to say that the Japanese (JASA?) or the Chinese won't be the leading edge in 120 years?

Eh, I'm not pressing the point but simply putting forth an valid points.

If it as such I will not press it any further.

As for your post Blinkin, Obama has put NASA back on the fore front of space exploration. He gave them the focus and funding to put a rover on the moon, at the cost of the Moon base but still that landing was a show that NASA was still in the game. In fact they are working a brand new space craft as we speak. I highly doubt corporations will take over space, that's the optimist in me anyway.

Okay, is everyone cool?

Good.

SGTDan, I too apologise if I caused any offence, but you must understand that I am a Higgerant Limey Pinko Socialist Scum. I have a rather raw sense of humour and I actually enjoy winding up Americans, because your sense of humour is as different to ours as your language!

In fact, I'm married to an American.

Blinkin is absolutely correct in his assessment: Basically I have designed a world in which NASA plays a small part, but is subordinated to commercial interests. If you personally cannot see this as a possible future, you are as entitled to your opinion as I am.

I would like to point out, however, that ten years ago I was telling people that the next big thing to get into would be biotechnology, that before the end of the 21st century we would see cranial implants replace mobile phones and begin to replace computers, we would see limb regrowth, human cloning and genetic embryo tailoring, to name but a few advances. (Obviously I can't prove I said any of that, you'll just have to take my word. My wife will testify in court that I've been saying it as long as I've known her!)

This year, scientists unveiled the first truly bionic arm, controlled by a micro chip attached to the top of someone's head. This is! This is no longer science fiction, it is science FACT! Cranial implants have arrived. The military will be the next people to see the benefit - if a disabled person can use that chip to control a replacement arm, can a pilot use it to fly an aeroplane?

From there the communications industry will see the potential, and by the end of this century I predict that the only people without chips in their heads will be over seventy years old.

My point being, I was right on that! It's already happening.

Sir Richard Branson has created a holding company called Virgin Galactic. It is already developing a space plane and selling tickets for day trips into space.

The ten million dollar Ansari X prize for getting the first privately funded space craft into orbit was won 8 years ago .

If you still don't believe that privately funded spaceflight is a goer, then I can't really help you.

No I understand that private space travel is growing but I hardly feel it will replace the government funded space programs that have been around for years. Anyways I have enjoyed this intelligent conversation!

As for my character I will withdraw my interest. I have a lot on my plate.

Scientists and miners mostly, or support staff.

I'm not really expecting anyone to actually "put in a days work" as such. The whole idea is that people interact with each other while exploring a "strange new world". It's really about the relationships and the tensions of being cooped up in an underground base on a world that will kill you, with no chance of going back.

Um, sorry, hope that didn't put you off... What I mean is, if you create a character that cleans the toilets, they will get as much respect and air time as the mission commander, provided they are willing to interact with other player characters. It's about who you are, not what you do.

Don't forget the T34 tank, which was the mainstay of the Red Army in WWII, the MiG 17, a fantastic multi-role fighter jet that was exported to air forces across the world, the T72 tank that was exported to armies around the world...

Russians are renowned for making cheap and reliable military hardware. It was only in later years when they started trying to get fancy about it that things started going wrong.

Well, I've fired both the M-16 and the AK-47 and of the two, I much prefer the AK. You can literally bury it in a swamp, dig it up a month later and with minimal cleaning it'll work as well as it did out of the box. The russians have always been excellent engineers.

On the other hand, if you look cross-eyed at a M-16, it'll jam... I actually own an AK-47... it's sitting gathering dust in a closet, but I loved firing it.
