OOC thread

Introduction:
If you have opened this up, you are most likely familiar with the mecha genre in one way or another. If not, I’ll give a brief explanation right here and now: A mecha as it often is referred as, is a giant robot-like construct. In most of the cases, they have to be piloted by a human sitting inside, and they are usually utilized to fight some otherwise superior threat. Mecha in both eastern and western culture have a lot of recurring themes. The robots, or mecha, are usually 5+ meters tall, depending on the purpose, and are usually several hundred times stronger than a regular human, making them vastly superior in most given situations.

Anyways, back on topic. I welcome thee to this recruitment thread. I personally am not as experienced with mecha as one would expect I guess, I was just really in the mood. Hence, I would definitely love if someone was willing to co-GM this with me, preferably someone with knowledge of the genre superior to my own. If you are interested or know someone that might be interested, please, send me a PM!

The story:

Only a few years into the future, a third big war broke out. This time, it was Russa and the US carrying their respective flags. Eventually, they were joined by North Korea, and then the middle east feuds started growing in scale. Without the extra support that Africa had been getting from a lot of these countries, more and more civil wars broke out there as well. It didn’t take long before the world became one big battlefield, with very few demilitarized zones. However, one of these zones, which at that time was India, spent their time developing a new special weapon that was going to be sold to the highest bidder, a weapon that could turn the tides, with little to no aftermath. It was the first in its class, but far from the last. It was dubbed the Machina.

The Machina was purchased by the US army only a few weeks after it was completed in exchange of a large sum of money and a promise of leaving India out of the war. And, as it had been told, the Machina turned the tides of the war quickly, making this newly invented combat machine praised like nothing else by the US, whom had no successfully taken over both all of Russia, the middle east, and central Asia. China remained out of this due to their own military strength and weapon development, India remained out of it for a while before the US decided that they didn’t bother waiting and took over the country right away to make sure the technology didn’t leak anywhere else.

However, it already had. The head scientist of the group that had been designing the Machina had already fled to Thailand and later Japan since they were both independent countries and China seemed to be the next most vulnerable part of Asia.

After arriving in Japan, the head scientist started developing an improved series of these mechanical war-machines while the US were mass-producing the model they had gotten from India. These units were overall better in every thinkable way, but still, the US were trying to improve their own too.

eventually however, China didn’t manage to hold their ground anymore and fell, with Japan being the next on the list. In two mere days, all of Japan was under military control, and the scienstist that had been helping designing the new series of Machina was suddenly gone like the wind. However, the units that had been produced were practically ready for the battlefield, all they needed was their pilots to pick up the fight…

What will be going on and who are we?:
The roleplay will view the sudden chrisis from the eyes of the past members of the research facility known as Lazarus Inc. It would primarily be the test-pilots and the necessary technicians if anyone is interested in such a role. The roleplay would center around interactions between the different characters, as well as the fights against other mech, there’s not much more too it than that that I wish to reveal really, you’ll just have to see for yourself :)

Rules:
- No meta-gaming (Having knowledge past what your character should be able to know)
- Powerplaying (Moving other characters without their consent)
- God-moding (Becoming the indestructible, overpowered asshole everybody hates)

- Treat one another with respect. This is OOC of course, characters can be in the throats of one another, but if you are among one another, work it out somewhere else, it really kills the mood.
- Make sure that all information is read before starting to make a character. Everything in Spoilers included.
- Don’t start whining because your character “Isn’t getting enough attention” or whatever. If something like that happens, it’s because said character is avoiding everyone 99% of the cases. The OOC is there for a reason.

- If you are struggling with something, please, for the love of everything that is good, ask, don’t keep it to yourself. This refers to anything from interactions to character creation. If there’s something you’re wondering about, ask me. It can be convenient for others as well.

Character template:

[float=right][/float]Name: (Pay attention to the game’s location, we don’t need an army of foreigners)
Age: (all characters have to be 18+, preferably mid-20s, but not required)

Role: (Pilot or technician of some sort)
Personality: (Just a quick summary to get a rough idea, doesn’t have to be 100% accurate)
Backstory: (More info on this below! Doesn’t have to be too long)

Sexual ons: (Please don’t direct to Ons and offs, give a few here)
Sexual offs: (Same as above, give us a few here!)

Other: (doesn’t have to be filled in)

Important information for character creation
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

All characters are obligated to be 18+ and preferably in their mid-20s, but this is no obligation. As far as pilots go, they can either be experienced or inexperienced depending on your personal desire. This is freeform, so the goal isn’t to be the very best, the goal is to have fun. Pilots would most likely be from a middle-class or upper class home, or have some form of recommendation (Military training, extravagant physique or intelligence etc.). All pilots would need to have a certain degree of stamina and physical strength, though as the technology improved, the physical tests were less weighted upon.

As far as technician roles go, they are mainly meant for secondary characters, and the ideal ratio between pilots and technicians would be around 2+:1 with pilots being the majority.

Since the game takes place in Japan, it would be nice if the majority was of Japanese origin, though I’ll accept some foreigners. If you are having trouble with names, feel free to send me a PM and we can work something out, same goes with images, I’m sure I can help if you’re having problems.

Most characters have most likely never killed a person, just be aware of that. Nobody are killing machines because they have been testing prototypes.

One last thing: “Parents died when young” is a pest that I won’t accept, most likely one of the extremely few things I won’t accept. It’s a shitty and overdone attempt at making a dark and gritty background, when there’s a lot more potential.

Mecha sheet:
The following is a sheet for making the Machina, aka. the mecha. Some core facts about the units can be found below the sheet.
[float=right][/img][/float]Name: (Usually a 3-number code and a title given to the specific mecha type)
Mechanism type: (More information can be found below)

(Distribute 20 points over the four different categories below. At least two points are suggested to add to each parameter.

Strength: Carrying weight and stopping power in close combat.
Armor: How well armored is the unit and how much it can take before the unit breaks down.
Agility: How fast and nimble the unit is.
Accuracy: Having higher accuracy means better precision and all movements the pilot does are a lot more accurate.

Weapons: (Heavy weapons will slow down the unit! Higher strength allows more weapons.)

More information regarding Machina:
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Jack of all trades are useless. If you want to make one, sure, go ahead, but it’ll immediately put yourself at an disadvantage. Giving a 5 in everything basically means that you excell in absolutely nothing, Aka. you’d get your ass whipped by anyone with an imbalanced point-distribution. Plus, they are bland and boring.

Another thing that has to be mentioned is that the Machina, or mechs, are still not production models, they are still what used to be prototypes, so there are a lot of unexpected minor problems with them. No “It falls apart because you moved” but more so parts that wear out a lot quicker, possible power shortages and so forth.

Power supplementation: the mecha rely on a new kind of power supply dubbed Axis core. The core is small enough to be kept in a 35cmx35cmx35cm box, and primarily consist of a cube spinning at an immense speed between two needles. In active use, it can supplement power for about 12 hours in light use, maybe four in heavy, before it has to be cooled down. A bi-effect of this core however is that it only works when it’s in contact with a human body, for reasons that has yet to be found out. It connects to the pilot, usually by their backs, and “communicates” with it. It makes the unit respond faster and lets it recognize voice commands by the user, and it creates a “bond” so to say between the user and the unit. However, the side effect of this however is that this “bond” the core makes the pilot and the unit shares, transfers over to the pilot as well. Anything the unit feels, the pilot feels, which has both its upsides and its downsides. If the unit would happen to have a limb dismembered while the pilot was in contact with it, the pilot would feel the same pain as if their own limb was dismembered, without the limb actually being cut off of course.

There is no “common design” yet, seeing that all units are prototypes. all units have their own unique designs, the only common factor is that all of the units are about 25 meters tall, and parts of the exoskeleton is the same.

The cockpits are designed for two people and is most commonly located in the unit’s chest. The main pilot sits up front with all monitors displaying the surroundings surrounding him/her, while the secondary pilot would be sitting behind the first pilot a tier higher, and would not be fully connected with the unit unless the main pilot should disconnect or die in the chair.

The units come in two types, both with their advantages and disadvantages.

Manual: The first generation of mecha utilized pneumatic servos. The disadvantage with this was that they were a lot heavier to move around for the pilot. However, they are a lot more fuel efficient than the other classes, and are a lot more accurate as the pilot would need to use more force to move it, making it a popular type among sharpshooters. They are not being used commonly for anything else though, apart from training newbies as they are a lot more affordable than the newer generation units.

Electronic: After realizing that the manual mecha was putting a lot of weight on the pilot, the pneumatic servos were quickly replaced with electronic servos, making all movements use electronic responses. These units are the most common overall. They lack the precision that the manual units have, but they are faster, swifter, and more responsive. They do however demand a lot more power than the manual units.

In the event of not already knowing what design you want to go with, have a look at this video and see if you find any you like :-) If you don't, don't be afraid of sending me a PM, we'll find one, don't worry :-)

Welp, finally got all of this stuff down, after a quantity of redials I can not count on my hands and feet... and this started out as a wish for an excuse to have a character in a plug-suit, huh... Anyways, I probably forgot something, so if you see anything, please, tell me and I'll make sure to add it! Currently, there's probably a ton of plot-holes that need to be cleared out and I apologize for that, I'll do my best to seek them out and remove them tomorrow, but for today, I really just wanted to get this up. I will probably go to bed right about now, but if you have a question, make sure to ask it, and I'll answer them first thing tomorrow :)

Name: Kumiko Akimoto
Nickname(s): Akimo, Aki, Kumi
Age: 24

Role: Pilot, familiar with most basic maintenance

Personality: Hyperactive and impatient, Kumiko isn't of the type that likes to sit around. As a tactician, she'd be hopeless, anything that means she has to sit down and talk things through instead of acting is unfit for her in every sense, and she'd be nothing but a bother. She has a reckless and worry-less attitude, and shows little fear towards anything. She's not the most caring person and isn't the person you'd want to go to if you needed someone to talk to, but if you need someone to push you forward, she's definitely not a bad choice. She has a big competitive instinct and can be a big tease. She's an archetype tomboy, loving things like sports and cars and overall things that by gender roles are considered male.

Backstory: Kumiko was born into a long line of industrial engineers. The bloodline had worked with all kinds of big projects across the world, anything from war technology to computer development. However, Kumiko quickly turned into the black sheep of the family by holding little interest in the work that her family line had preformed for centuries. She wasn't too interested in all the "fine details" that the work involved, and quickly decided that she wasn't interested at all in getting an engineering education. She was far more interested in things like sports and physical activity, and despite having excellent grades overall, she wasn't the least bit interested in utilizing it for anything. As one last attempt at directing her in the right direction, her parents used their connections to get her a job with the Lazarus company, hoping that it would inspire her to pick up an engineering grade, something it naturally didn't do as she was far more interested in the constructions themselves than the process of making them. With nothing else to do, her younger sister became the heir to the family line and pretty much all communication with her parents, and the rest of the family for that sake, was cut off.

Sexual ons: Oral (giving/receiving) rough sex, confidence
Sexual offs: Obvious lack of confidence, anything counted as very extreme (Bathroom play, bloodplay etc).

Other: Openly bisexual. She has very little interest in getting into serious relationships and is far more fond of just fooling around. Is very fond of old motorcycles.

Name: 004-Lancer
Mechanism type: Electronic

Strength: 8
Armor: 2
Agility: 7
Accuracy: 3

The Lancer unit was designed with both nationalistic ideals involved, and was created around the idea of a glass-cannon, a unit with very high stopping power but little defensive properties. It relies heavily on avoiding taking hits in the first place, rather than being able to take a lot of hits before it becomes too wounded to continue. It was designed with little thoughts towards the pilot, with it being only protected with thin aluminium plates. While it is an extremely lightweight unit, it demands a lot of power from the core, making it unsuited for long-duration combat.

Weapons: A close range Naginata designed to easily breach through opposing armor, even thick plate armor. As an alternative for longer range attacks, it uses a 40mm, 20-shot chaingun designed to destroy the opponent's armor before dealing the final hit.

Interested for sure. Mechs can be quite fun, especially if they are incredibly varied (after all, there's a reason why Gundam continues to succeed)

If you're taking Anubis, I'm taking Jehuty. Just saying.

All the mechs in ZoE are sexy beasts so I don't blame you. I just love how Anubis looks the best! <3

Question: are we going for "realistic" mechs (i.e. extramobile weapons platforms), or for the "refuge-in-audacity" mechs (i.e. anime mechs)?

Why not a mixture of both?

Only if I can write scenes where anime mechs tip over in a stiff breeze, their joints crumpling like aluminum foil under the immense strain of their poorly proportioned skeletons, all while scientists and technicians look on and shake their heads with knowing smiles.

Fellow engineer here. I understand your pain.

That being said, I think this sounds fun. I'm in.

Juggtacular

I'm not an engineer, but the mech's should be the least of the things you think of in most animes, lol. All the other crazy shit going on takes precedence.  ;D

pendarious

I call dibs on making a technician. I kinda prefer playing secondary or background characters but I'll jump into the foreground roles if I need to. (or in cases like Fate/Infinitey where I just can't resist playing a Master)
Psycho Mantis: You must spend every day pretending to act like you're falsely letting on that you aren't not unbetraying someone you don't not purport to allegedly not work for but really do! How do you keep all this shit straight without having an aneurysm?

Well, I would argue and say that there is no such thing as a "realistic" mecha. However, if you're thinking something like Pacific Rim, then no it won't be that kind of mecha. Anime style, things like Evangelion and Gurren Lagann, that stuff :-P

Name: Shizuru Satonaka
Age: 27
Role: Pilot

Personality: Aloof "Big Sister", Deadpan Snarker, and a Spirited Competitor. Quiet, a loner and, let's face it, kind of a bitch, Shizuru is not one that makes friends easily. She is, however, the kind of person that one can always go to for advice and support, and it will be given freely. Wiser than she looks, she makes up for her faults by having a keen mind and a broad shoulder to lean on. She might berate or belittle you one moment, but the second you need her, Shizuru will be there to pull you out of trouble.

Backstory: Born and raised in Osaka, Japan, Shizuru is what most people might call a 'military brat'. Her family has a long history of serving in the military and while some might claim she joined out of pressure from her mother and father, she insists she did so by her choice alone. She's always been proud of her parents, grandparents, and other relatives in service of their country. It suited Shizuru as well, as she was always something of a tomboy. Perhaps it was her father's fervent wish that he have a son that she was grew up just a bit bigger than the other girls. A leading member of every sports club she could join, Shizuru has always been athletic and more physically adept than her friends and schoolmates. It set her up as something of an outsider, which kept her slightly isolated from her clique-centeric peers, but she never seemed to mind all that much. When she was old enough to join the military, she jumped at the chance.

Sexual ons: Women.
Sexual offs: Men. "Easy" women.

Other: Public romance and sex in general aren't things Shizuru is comfortable with. She is terrible at showing romantic feelings and displaying her interest in other females. While longing for companionship, she is easily flustered when it comes to "mushy bullshit", as she puts it. She is an open and blunt person when it comes to everything but romance, at which point she clams shut. Don't expect to get anything out of her without serious work.

Name: 009-Vanguard
Mechanism type: Manual

Strength: 7
Armor: 7
Agility: 2
Accuracy: 4

Weapons: MkII Sieger Arms Heavy Assault Rifle, Sieger Arms M-9 Shoulder Launcher (chaff or flak), SN-40 Heavy Riot Shield

The 009-Vanguard Machina pilots like it looks; like a nearly immobile slab of metal. One of the earliest 'defense-type' Machina produced, it was scrapped due to it's sluggish manuvering ability and never made it out of the prototype phase. Shizuru fell in love the moment she saw it. She nicknamed it 'Hachiman'. While adept at piloting it and somehow able to squeeze more mobility out of it than one would expect, it's still nothing close to being considered 'agile'. It is a machine built for a purely defensive role. One which it fills wonderfully. The Vanguard sports some of the thickest armor plating available and can withstand punishment from all directions, even against newer generation Machina. It bolsters it's defensive capabilities with a massive shield which it uses to defend itself and allies alike. Vanguard can even ward off missile attacks with it's installed chaff, or fend off aerial units with flak, both fired from the small cannon on it's left shoulder. It's primary weapon is the classic, reliable, and belt-fed MkII Sieger Arms Heavy Assault Rifle which, while not the most accurate weapon, can put enough firepower down field to deter almost any enemy.
