Quote from: Faeli on October 01, 2024, 11:23:54 AMI heard about that.  Weren't they doing something similar to Pathfinder where "Half-elf" became like a template that could be applied to other races, so that Dwarven Half-Elves or Halfling Half-Elves became possible?
I haven’t seen anything about that in the PHB, and I’ve looked.  Maybe they’ll have it in the DMG.

Quote from: HockeyGod on October 01, 2024, 11:27:22 AMOh sorry, I completely misread and then missed your 2024 messages. Let me think on that. I actually just got all the 2014 and am currently playing within that context. I'd like to learn more about that, but I can see value in also learning 2024.

That’s cool.

Tell you what: any questions you might have for 2014, feel free to toss them to me, either in PM or whatever.

I can also tell you: I don’t know how long until you start getting rules mixed in, but you used to be able to just google D&D 5e rules.  Maybe you still can if you type 2014.

I downloaded the 2024 character sheet - it looks a bit different. I like it. I've also gone ahead and ordered the 2024 book. I'll start working on my character after I get the book.

HockeyGod

The book was delivered today and I'm flipping through it. Are you going to start another thread? I'm not sure how many people are interested in this and want to be sure it is moving forward before investing too much time in creating a character :)

AndyZ

I could make a new thread if wanted, but seems better to keep this one since a number of people have already posted here.

RattledSnake

By my count we've got five people interested with myself as a sixth, seems like a pretty good amount of interest!

Sounds good to me. Do you have a preference for how we post our characters? I've got mine pretty well done and would like someone to look over it. The 2024 character sheet seems much easier to use in many ways from the previous one.

AndyZ

If you can just type it up and post it, that’d be great.  I especially need any time you were asked to make a choice, but having all the information you can give would be useful as well.  Pictures are good but it’s fine if you can’t get one.

How about the rest of you?  I know Rattled is waiting to see what others make.

Do you need me to take the rogue role as well? I can do that as a Bard if nobody plays a rogue.

AndyZ

Bard is good ^_^ Do you have plans for Species and Background?

Species will be Elf, but I don't know about the background yet. It depends on if I need to know Thieves' Tools.

Ok - before I type everything up, I have a question. I was determining skill proficiency and seem to have the following calculation of the number of skills. I am asking because it is a lot and I'm questioning if I did everything right.

  • Paladin class: +2 skills
  • Noble: history and persuasion
  • Skilled feat (Noble): +3 skills
  • Skilled feat (Human): +3 skills
  • Human: +1 skill

Skilled feat can be selected multiple times according to the handbook. So, that means I select 11 skills as proficient? Or am I figuring out that wrong?

Thanks!

AndyZ

Kaya:

If you don’t want to have Thieves Tools, it won’t mess up the whole group ^_^

A lot of my plans for this involve building a setting that will work for the players, rather than having a premade setting where the players in question may not have all the bases covered.

If nobody has Thieves Tools, I can just avoid doing anything with them.  However, if we do have someone who has them, I might have stuff for it to show how it works.

Hockey:

In your case, I would recommend taking something besides Skilled as your Origin feat for Human Versatile.  You don’t have to, but eleven is a huge number.

Savage Attacker can be a nice one for a Paladin.  Lucky can be fun as well.

That said, if you want that high of skills, you may do so.  You are figuring it correctly.

Yeah, I will take a look at that. I agree it is an insane amount. I was considering savage attacker and perhaps will select that one.

I did my rolls for abilities - did them with my DM in my current campaign. If you want me to redo them, I can do that. E used to have a dice roller. Was it removed in the major update?

So, one thing that you’ll see a lot is how to make characters.  You’ll find this in the book on page 38.

The most common method is what people mean when they say 27 point buy.  Basically, you pay so many points for each ability score, and those points add up to 27.

http://chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html has a free for use point buy generator.  You can select Custom Race to put in the points from your Background.  It was designed for 2014 but there weren’t any changes there.

If this is too complicated, you can use the standard array: 15 14 13 12 10 8.  Note that these numbers also add up to 27 on the point buy.

I just double-checked and the book says point cost, but older editions say point buy, and it means the same thing.

Edit:

Here’s a c/p of the ability score table

Score   Cost
8             0
9             1
10            2
11            3
12            4
13            5
14            7
15            9

I looked into it, and now I'm thinking of doing a Human Noble as well. Maybe @HockeyGod and me can be brother and sister?

AndyZ

I’m good with people starting out knowing each other or even being siblings if they want to.

My default plan is to start everyone off in an inn, having stayed there last night and being morning when the game starts, with the inn not costing anyone from their starting gold.

Are we doing point buy? I can start filling out the gist of a sheet without knowing the class yet

Correct.

With a Bard and a Paladin, I’d suggest an arcane caster, but you don’t have to if you’d rather do something else.

I’d definitely be open to it. :)

I’ve tried to build a character and here is what I’ve come up with: https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=49552.msg16815129#msg16815129

RattledSnake

Oh, I was going to go noble, I didn't realize people were planning something, whoops! That said I think I'll go Criminal, like the idea of an ex-con caster

AndyZ

I have no issue with everyone going noble ^_^ Same family?  Allies?

That could be fun, I'm game to make an allied family if the others are okay with it(but no trouble if not)

I'm absolutely fine with that.

HockeyGod

I'm okay as well. I'm also open to being part of a cadre of noble families that are tacking some kind of challenge that has come up. Very excited for this!

AndyZ

Kaya, how’s your character coming along?  Anything you need help with?

I can run with just three if that’s all we get.  It’ll be worth teaching.

One thing I wanted to let people know: since the monster stats aren’t out yet, I just plan to use the old books for that.  I doubt anyone will have an issue with that.
