The year, 1921. The location of departure, London, England. The journey destination, New York City, New York. This is, however, not your average year in your average city, no. This is the maiden voyage of the Lapis Sunset Luxury Cruise Ship in an alternate universe 1921 London, England with a supernatural twist.
(Lightly inspired by the TTRPG Candela Obscura by Critical Role & 1899 on Netflix.)

1921 as we know it, is an era of industry, jazz and absolute indulgence. While that is to be true of our 1920s, we are also a little more advanced. Industry and invention have very much taken off, making strides upon strides in only the short years since the beginning of basic creation. This mostly comes in the way of electricity, vehicles and business, though everything still has that 1920s aesthetic that we all love to see. The world is open to your imagination in this regards, so play with it and don't feel confined by historical accuracies of the real 1920s.

Not only is technology much more advanced than anyone imagined, but there are other elements out there too. The supernatural realms that mirror our own like an overlapping piece of tracing paper - transparent and barely noticed - is very much real. The average person would not know anything of these places, though there are a select few that have worked to uncover the mysteries of the supernatural and the occult. There are also simple folk who have witnessed unexplainable events tied to this realm and its denizens, though they may not know what exactly they have seen or heard.

The Veil is the term coined by scholars of the occult. It is the name given for the rifts that open within the universe, connecting the supernatural realm deemed 'The Eldritch Expanse' and our plane of existence. It isn't the norm to know of such things, and its even less of the norm to have had any contact with the Expanse or its inhabitants at all. Even those that have dedicated their lives to the subject have very little general knowledge. What lies beyond the Veil is a complete and utter mystery...one you're about to experience...

A Luxury Cruise Ship, years in the making, has finally been completed and scheduled its very first journey; its maiden voyage from the ports of London, England to the harbour of New York City, the big apple itself. Whether joining the upper crust of society aboard the opulent decks, a member of the hardworking middle class or downtrodden lower class, an opportunistic stowaway or a member of the highly skilled crew, you have boarded this vessel with whatever baggage - physical or not - you've brought with you. You are to ride this ship to its destination and have a brilliant time doing so, enjoying all the decadence at your fingertips.

At least, that's what you've signed up for. That's what you've paid for. Whatever happens after your departure begins, well, that would be telling...

It is also rumoured that during the assembling of the ship and throughout the logistics, that some of the crew had gone missing. They seemingly didn't show up to work one day or they didn't clock out, leaving their whereabouts a complete mystery...

You have many types of stories you could tell with many types of characters. I mentioned these briefly in the blurb above, however here is a list of some ideas that you could toy with. This is intended to help people who are wanting to play, but unsure of what sort of character to indulge in.
  • Paid Citizen (Upper, Middle or Lower Class)
  • Stowaway
  • Famous Guests
  • Crew - 2nd Captain (I will play the Captain as an NPC), Safety Officer, Security Officer, Deckhands, Restaurant Staff (Chef, Waiter, Dishwasher, Bartender), Cleaners, Cabin Stewards, Entertainers, Engineers, etc.
  • Occult Specialists/Researchers - Lecturers, Private Investigators, Private Collectors

Despite the fact that there are occultists and supernatural elements within the world, there will not be major amounts of magics on the side of the players. I want to explore more of a desperation and spontaneous feel with this game. I will allow people who fall under that category to have an item with some magical properties, or a power or two after being touched by the energy from the other side.

You have complete control over your character, their paths before and during the game. It would be incredible if people could make characters who possibly have connections, but that isn't a must as this voyage would have been advertised world wide. People of any race, gender or sexual identity are welcome within this game and within the world itself. Let your imaginations run wild!

In regards to our themes and genre, this game will include:
  • Supernatural
  • Alternate History
  • Mystery
  • Horror
  • Slow Burn

  • Real Life comes first. This game is all about fun and will have a relaxed atmosphere when it comes to posting frequency. Take care of yourself first.
  • Do not pester others to post. Again, the posting frequency of this game will be relaxed. Do not harass other players because their schedules do not align with your own.
  • All characters MUST be 18+. This is for the comfort of everyone, as their may be dark scenes written within the game.
  • Use the headers and content fields provided. Again, this is for the comfort of everyone. Use the content field to warn others of possibly triggering material and help maintain a safe writing environment for everyone.
  • Maturity & Behaviour. Please be polite to all other writers and leave petty drama's out of any threads or communications to do with this game. We are all here to have a fun, immersive time, so lets keep it enjoyable for everyone.
  • Face Claims. These must only be real people or realistic artwork. I withhold the right to deny art should it not fit the theme of the game.
  • Talk to me! If you have any issues, I'm always here to listen and help resolve anything that might be an issue.

How many characters can one writer have?
I will be limiting this to one per writer at the start of the game though you are allowed to use NPCs as you see fit unless stated elsewhere that the NPC is for GM use only.

What supernatural elements will players be allowed to have?
I'm open to different ideas creatively, however I imagine whatever has happened to these people that are touched from witnessing or direct contact with the supernatural would be something that has changed them quite drastically; perhaps the loss of an eye and instead they can see into the Eldritch Expanse with their now scarred eye/removed eye from seeing too much. Perhaps they have touched the veil in some way, or grabbed a supernatural beast that they saw without realising what it was, turning their hand to stone or leaving it black and numb, increasing their sense to the supernatural. I imagine those touched by the supernatural to have abilities that are not offensive, or if they are offensive in nature, they are weak and heavy on the body in terms of exhaustion and whatever other drawbacks they have. These abilities must have drawbacks, physical or mental, how you decided to portray them is up to you.

How will magical items work and how common will they be?
Items touched by the supernatural and the occult should be very, very rare. There aren't many of them around, and while there are collectors of such items out there, they'd be fairly hard to get a hold of. Abilities of said items should be realistic and mostly non-offensive, just like the powers of people touched by the supernatural world.

Will character death be a possibility?

To some degree, I would like it on the table from everyone. However I would never kill off a character or expect a writer to kill off their character without the writers say so and input. This will be a collaborate aspect. Combat is not the main focus of the encounters you will face throughout the story.

Where will this game be placed?
This game will be placed in the Extreme section for group games. This is to allow characters maximum creativity and fits best with the genre and themes stated above.

How many characters will you be accepting?
As this is my first, properly GMed group game, I would like to keep the numbers somewhat low. I don't have a specific number in my head, but it will not be a first come, first served basis for accepted characters.

What will the level of historical accuracy be within the game?
Very low. I, myself, am not a historian and while I do enjoy researching for posts, I don't like to be held to certain high standards. Hence the AU roaring 20s idea. That being said, I'm also not a ship expert.

Is this LGBTQ+ friendly?
110% yes!

What is the smut content of this game?
This can be as much or as little as you like. I don't imagine it being smut heavy, though of course I'm happy for it to take place within the game. This is completely up to you, as I imagine most of it will be Player/Player smut rather than GM/Play smut, if that makes sense.

Will there be a Discord?
I will discuss this with the accepted players once that is done and dusted. I don't want to exclude anyone, but I know how useful Discord can be for plotting and general back and forth chatter. I'm also happy to consider both a Discord server and an OOC thread here on E.

How will this game be run?
I will be running this game as a mostly GMed game with sandbox elements. I intend to write up GM posts for the story and NPCs, as well as events for players to interact with and respond to, as well as possibly writing a character of my own (though I haven't decided the latter yet.) We will start off our story boarding the Lapis Sunset for its maiden voyage, which will be mostly sandbox for people to mingle and introduce their characters, before I set off GM events and posts.

Please add whatever else you would like and feel free to gussy up your sheet in your preferred manor, as long as the information stays in the same order!

All character sheets must be DMed to me, completed. You're also welcome to put them in the thread, however I won't approve them unless they're sent to me directly.
If you have ideas and want to figure out how they could work in the setting, please don't hesitate to contact me!

I just wanted to add in a more casual way that this will be my first time GMing a group game here on E. I have GMed for TTRPG one-shots in the past, but obviously this is completely different, so please be patient with me and lets have a fun time c:

If anyone is curious, I also have a little more info in my world-building thread here!

Thank you for checking in and I hope this gets your imagination gears turning!

MetroFallout

I'd like to plant a little flag of interest for this.

I'm very interested

I have questions about the supernatural aspect of this.

When it comes to being touched by the other side is it that they had certain aspects of supernatural for example fast healing or something of that style or is it turns into a wolf on a full moon ilk?

Hi Levi! I'm so happy to have your interest!

I actually should probably expand on this a bit further! I will pop this in the first post when I have the chance, but hopefully that helps some.

Thank you for your interest again! And for the interest of those above you, Lokus and Metro!

As mentioned to Levi, I have edited the first post to include a further explanation on what I expect from those who wish to play with the supernatural and occult elements to their characters. I hope this helps!

EDIT: I've also included a bit about magical items c:

Great thanks for the clarification! I'm thinking of maybe a staff member like an engineer

That would be great! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! c:

I've added a couple more clarifications in the FAQ section regarding character death and other things. So definitely take another read of those!

Hey Peachy, should we send sheets off to you whenever, or hold off?  I have a character I'm working on now that won't shut up in my head, and is begging to be put together.

Ooooh, if there's still room, put me down for a security officer. I love creepy boat stuff.

Absolutely! I'm so happy to have your interest c:

I've added a 'reserved face claim' section at the bottom of the first post. I have received 2 sheets so far that I will look over properly soon, but I will add their faces into the reserved section while sheets are pending so that everyone knows about them c:

Oh can I reserve Diego Luna?

xPeachyPuff

I just wanted to clarify something again. I intend for the game to be GMed actively, with sandbox elements throughout. I feel like that wasn't very clear in my original explanation of it and I was a little unsure of how I wanted things to be as well considering this is my first ever group game. Hopefully that is helpful to those unsure of how the game would run.

xPeachyPuff

I just wanted to say that if someone does want to play into the occult and wants to take up a studied person in that regard, I can give some more details on the Expanse and its habitants that would likely be known to them based on their background and story. However, they would still mostly be in the dark on certainties as its difficult to know things for sure on this subject.

I am also considering a written character myself still!

Madam Striga

Posting tentative interest, still on an 'away' right now but I will be considering joining up.
