I prefer superlative as my awesome alternative.

I like the way Sluggy Freelance uses it.  As in, "Is it not nifty?"

Shjade

I'd vote for phasing out "sweet" as a higher priority than "awesome," myself.

Fantastic is, well, fantastic as a replacement.

So instead of awesome, we say "No"?

Yes.

In Scorsese's No Direction Home one of the many wonderful pieces of footage from Dylan's 1966 European tour is from a get-together with the press in Paris. The place is packed with reporters, all in a bunch, and one of them asks Bob in a low, insistent voice (good English, but Parisian accent of course) as if the guy had been working very carefully to come up with this: "Is there a special message you want to bring out when you sing?"

Dylan replies in a very gravelly drawl, sounding really tired: "No." He'd literally faced that question thousands of times by then and it shows.  ;)

You could shorten 'brilliant' to 'brill'..

at the risk of no one knowing what you're talking about.

The funniest use of the word "awesome" I can recall was someone commenting on the central core of the earth being a huge lump of crystalline iron, nickel, uranium and other heavy metals several thousand degrees hot.  :D

That's actually a correct use of the word, that level of heat and pressure is indeed awe inspiring!

Inorite - but perhaps not in tune with its uh, acquired meaning.  :-)

I'm reminded of an old hymn that they used to play in my parents' church.  Always made me chuckle inside:

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

(Yes, it's used correctly there, but even back then 'awesome' had the current slang meaning for us young 'uns.)

Well, these Chinese projects for high-speed railways from China to the continental U.S. (with a tunnel under Bering Strait!) and to Europe, look seriously nifty and daring. I admit to doubting they will materialize though. At least the Beijing-to-California (or is it Texas?) railway looks really far out, and a bit uneconomical.
