Possible Superhero Game?
« on: January 19, 2010, 01:56:16 PM »
I'm looking at maybe, possible, sometime in the future, running a superhero game.  It'll use M&M 2E and more than likely be set in the Paragons universe, a setting based on stuff like Heroes, the 4400, and Ultimate Marvel.  I'm poking around here to see if there's any interest in such a game.

You must have played with some crappy evildoers, then.

Though if evil's out, what about good characters who just happen to have powers that cause massive amounts of collateral damage? :P

Well the Patriot in my table top game wasn't even remotely good. The big bad Hulk-thing was atually the Patriot with his powers misfiring.. instead of his normal empathic feed it was something nastier he was tapping into.

Well I at the very least wasn't thinking evil, lol. Any plans on how much power points you'll allow for the characters? I'll roll up a character tomorrow, and maybe the next day if I end up having to go a bit slow, if I found out the pp value at least. And are there any specific character restrictions I should be aware of when making the character? Such as a max amount of ranks for immunity?

I'm interested, though I guess I'd need to know a bit more about the actualy content of what the game would be about. Unless you just plan an open world "and.... go" type thing.

I don't know the paragon setting - from what I've heard it's a less progressed, slightly more vanilla take on Abberant? Is there anything I should know for putting together a character for it, or will standard M&M2 work?

More like a hero game setting using sources like Heroes or Ultimate Marvel. Folks are really JUST starting to appear.

I'm planning PL 6 to start, so less superhero, and more super-talented individual.  Though it's not impossible to create someone with a single, strong power at this level, either.  Buy-offs will be limited to half PL, so no more than +-3 at this point.  Likewise for Impervious Toughness -- it's limited to 3 ranks at character creation.

I intend for the storyline of the campaign to go all the way to PL 12, if there's still interest at that point.  I hope to explore how real, live superbeings influence, well, the world.  Expect Warren Ellis and Frank Miller to be influences.

PL6?  Alrighty, then.

What do you mean buy 'buy-offs?'  I'm still very new to the system (as in I just made my first character [with much aid] over the weekend), so I may be a bit slower on the uptake.

My first thoughts on a character are for a super martial artist type, with a supernatural battle aura, a la Raoh's aura of giant angry fists that deck anyone who gets near him (Hokuto no Ken).  The problem becomes, how should I go about representing that?  I'd rather it be something passive or almost-passive, as well as directly destructive.

My first thoughts are some form of Strike.  A Strike Aura?  I'm not sure if that's legal, and the exact mechanics seem like they may be unreasonable.  After all, if I punch someone, they'd be affected by the punch and the aura, for two attacks, and if they punch back, that's another attack, so that may take some finessing to make acceptable.  Form B is more like a defensive stance.  An area-effect strike as a 5'-25' cloud, with, say, a minute duration and some constraint that the effect ends if I leave the cloud.  I'm not sure if that'd need to be paired with some form of immunity.

Then, there are more traditional auras.  Drain/Fatigue/Paralysis/Stun Aura.  If anyone touches me, they're overwhelmed by the battle aura, and that could be more subtle.

Form D would take the form of a more aggressive aura.  Just slap Homing on a strike a couple times, and the aura pursues the enemy until the attack connects.

Multiple forms at once could overlap, like the ki cloud and the homing fists, though that could be very costly.

Other powers I'm considering include a rank in Speed, Slow Fall, some form of accute Blindsense, a one-rank speed-based Teleport ability a la Shunpo, a rank in Super-strength (maybe), possibly some kind of meditative trance represented by Boost, and some standard Protection (probably with that maxed impervious).

In M&M, it's possible to trade off certain features, like Attack & Defense, and Toughness & Damage.  So, while Toughness is normally limited to +6 for a PL 6 game, you could limit your highest Damage to +3 and get Toughness up to +9.

Fits the game just fine

If you are new to
This fine system, however,
It's a bit complex

I don't know what you mean by a cloud.  I am not going to allow a Strike with the Aura modifier: Aura is only usable on Sustained powers, so you'd have to increase the duration to Sustained, which would allow you to have multiple Strikes active at once.  Obviously, rather game-breaking.

'Cloud' is one of the area modifiers.  It starts at a 5' diameter sphere, but I think I'd advance that to 25' through progression.  Then, if allowed, I'd use progression to boost the duration of the cloud from one round to a minute, and toss a couple restrictions on it so that the cloud ends if I leave it and I can't stack the cloud with itself (either for a rebate on the points or as a constraint just to get it in the door).  Oh, and I'd tack on a flaw so that it'd take a full-round action to put it up, meaning it can't really affect any enemy who doesn't choose to engage me in melee anyways.

Katina, Do you mind me asking what book cloud is in? I'd like to take a look at it.

And forgive me for randomly intruding with my opinion on the subject but are you looking for a aura that does damage? or a type of buffing aura that increases friendly damage? I think I could come up with a few ways to do both of those without such a complex system. I mean if you were thinking of a aura where he just kind of get's upset and things around him break or if you were thinking something like he punches out and hit's all foes in the area so fast it seems like an aura there's a few ways to do that I can think of that I think would be a bit easier.

Core rules, page 111.  'Cloud' is one of the subtypes of Area.  And I have no objection to complexity; I want to push the system and understand what it can do better, so that I can come to grasp the system as a whole faster.

And there's not a specific effect I'm going for, so much as an aesthetic of the battle aura.  Like with Raoh in Hokuto no Ken, as mentioned, where just being in his presence can be enough to kick someone's ass without his lifting a finger, or Yamamoto in Bleach, who can bring people to their knees just by standing there.  This is a purely spiritual technique derived from immense focus, training, and force of will rather than any sort of volley of blows.  It's an offensive ability, rather than any sort of buff.

Though perhaps a standard action area effect could work, with a standard action to maintain.  It could be like...

Strike 2 (Mighty, Area: Cloud, Progression: Area x2, Subtle).  Assuming 18 strength, that'd be 2+6+2+1=11 points for a 25' diameter cloud centered around my martial artist for a single round, so anyone trying to rush her would be buffeted by her battle aura, which seems perfect.  For the aesthetic, she'd be standing there calmly meditating, seemingly doing nothing, the enemies would charge her, and then her invisible battle aura would hit them as they rushed in.  Perhaps I could toss in Alternate Save to take the area from a reflex save to a will save.

Pair that with some homing punches and a forcefield and the battle aura should be covered in its entirety.

Edit: There is now a draft of Shizuko up.  Subject to revision and/or complete scrapping, of course.

Str 16/+3, Dex 16/+3, Con 16/+3, Int 10/+0, Wis 12/+1, Cha 10/+1

Attack 2/+4 melee (+2 ranged) Defense 0/+6 (+0 flat-footed)
Skills Concentration 8/+9, Notice8/+9, Sense Motive 8/+9
Feats Attack Focus: Melee x2, Dodge Focus x6, Uncanny Dodge: Spirit Sense

Force Field 3 (Extra: Impervious; Power Feat: Selective)
Speed 1 (10 MPH)
Strike 3 (Power Feats: Mighty, Accurate, Homing)

Considering a teenager comic geek..

either a Shapeshifter  who can mimic basic 'comic book' concepts.. trying to limit it to 3 or 4 power
types.. Both his 'comic book' powers and shapeshifting talents will take time to use.

Either that or a shapeshifter with some serious toughness.. (the Ultimate STANDIN!)

That sounds more like a blast attack to me. A point blank sustained cloud blast with the negative of being point blank. Technically it's the same thing with the same pp cost but the sound if slightly different. And that is allowed by the technical rules, either way. Raveled's got the last say on the matter but it technically is correct.

I do have to ask a question about it though. How do you figure "mighty" into that? Since you said it's the force of his training and will how do you rationalize strength helping with the damage?

I like the concept though. Have you looked in the Ultimate Power book? If you don' have access to it PM me. It's got a power called "chi" that I think fits with the character and I'm sure you'd at least want to take a look at. Not the best power ever but definitely fits in with the meditating and focusing to get stronger in seconds type of approach.

I think I'm looking at some sort of gageteering bow-specialist, we'll see how it works out when I write him up here over the next few days.

Blast, Strike, it doesn't really matter.  Strike was closer to start.  As for where 'Mighty' fits in?  It's not so much that the strike gains power from pure, physical strength, so much as the pure, physical strength gains power from the battle aura, and 'Mighty' in this regard is simply a representation of that.  The distinction between mind, body, and soul tends to become extremely blurred when you start dealing with supernatural martial arts; strengthening the body strengthens the soul, strengthening the soul strengthens the body, and somewhere along the way, you gain the power to blow up planets just by doing enough push-ups.

As for Chi?  An array wouldn't do me much good.  I could toss the two strikes in the same array for a five-point rebate, but other than that, I intend to use most of my abilities simultaneously.  Spot the enemy with super-sense, teleport up to 'em with the force field up, punch him in the face (now with stun), and slow fall to the ground.  Not a whole lot can be collapsed together (again, save the two strikes).

Oops.  Made a mistake with my points; I accidentally did eight ranks per point instead of four.  So, I shunted my punch into an array with the strike cloud (giving it a hefty upgrade in the process), freeing up five points, used three to pay off the miscalculation, and used the other two to pick up eight ranks in Stealth.

Not quite sure what kind of hero I'd like, but the archetype of a psychic telepath/empath is appealing to me right now. Looks like it'd make a nice contrast to the physical-ish characters mentioned so far.

Background
Shin was born to a pair of Japanese nationals who had moved to the San Diego region. Both his parents were international trade lawyers who were more comfortable in the office than at home. He grew up as an excellent, if undistinguished, student. He was a comic, anime and manga collector, and budding cosplay enthusiast (more due to his girlfriend than any actual interest).
That would be his undoing as the preparation for the latest convention got turned on it's ear. A pair of costumes he had been working on had been Ron Stoppable and Shego, and when his was damaged his girlfriend (who hadn't  liked the tight constrictive Shego costume or his comments about another friend going as Kim Possible and that she could always do 'KiGo' with her) blew up and stomped out. In the end, in an effort to mend fences, he agreed to let her choose his costume when she had to fall back on an old Ranma-chan outfit of her own.
Needless to say he, or rather she, was a bit surprised when their powers manifested and were seemingly modeled on the 'classical archetypes' (according to a two bit paraphysicist at the con) they had been playing as in a cosplay event at the convention. Having several hundred people, including a crew from G4tv, see you change from an androgynous boy into a literal copy of a popular animation character has made it hard for her to cope but she is doing well with her parents support and therapy. The powers and physical ability is helping a bit.

Personality
Going from a bit of a 'geek' to a hottie has opened up Reon a lot, but she is still a bit twitchy around most guys who see her as a 'hottie'.

Powers
Reon generates an intense field of plasma in her body that she can direct though her hands or envelop them with. She is capable of generating sufficient force destroy concrete and metal structures. The field is stronger when she channels it in a blast. When she generates the plasma, her eyes turn green with a slight glow.
As a result of her energy generating abilites, her body has increased in density and resilience. She is capable of taking serious blows and even gunshots hits with little or no harm. Testing has indicated that her physical attributes and resilance are increasing at pace with her ability to generate plasma but to what degree is not known.

Totals: Abilities 22 + Skills 8 (32 ranks) + Feats 7 + Powers 21 + Combat 16 + Saves 16 + Drawbacks 0 = 90

Got tired trying to get the stunt guy to work and the imp of the preverse had me wondering what would happen to a cosplayer who suddenly developed her character's powers would have to do.:D

If actual superpowers only started appearing about a week ago, would it be possible to have a sort of unconscious build-up in backstory? I'm starting to picture an incredibly charismatic, rich young playboy-type (heir to Corporate Fortune #125), whose natural ability to 'read' people and get them to do what he wants suddenly erupts into full-on telepathic abilities?

That is very fitting with a paragon style game.. (think there is a 'contact' guy who basically developed the power to allow folks to communicate via him.. and it seemed very in synch with his old job)

Anyone want to make suggestions for my psychic before I flush out his personality? I'm a bit worried about having such a low Toughness save, and I'm not sure if buying such a high Wealth value is a good idea - it fits the character perfectly, but Wealth seems like it could be a wasted 'stat' if I'm not a gadgeteer or tech-based hero.

Yes, but he'd spent several feats on Benefit (Wealth).  Not using the Wealth rules allowed him to redistribute those elsewhere.

BACKGROUND

Sarah Steele was a brilliant young prodigy, the likes of which had been seen in a hundred years. Not necessarily because she was cleverer than her peers - but because of determination to study many different fields in great depth. She devoured the sciences, and after getting her Doctorates (three simultaneously) ended up getting many grants to fund her cross discipline research. And she delivered, giving new discoveries in biochemistry, human cell replacement and adaptive polymers.

Yet, eventually, her research hit a wall. She needed a human test subject, and permission wouldn't be granted until much, much more testing had been done. Decades of testing. More testing than she had patience for. So, late at night, she applied her new cell regenerators to herself. That's when the accident happened. And that's when Sarah Steele's new life began.

PERSONALITY

Aggressive yet compassionate. Sarah sees her new body as a way to explore science in ways others haven't even thought of. Plus, there's this whole super-hero thing going on. And she's a big enough nerd to admit, the idea of being special in an obvious way interests her.

Oh, Idea.

Codename: Slip

A small time thief who was part of a crew he got caught and went to prison, then developed the ability to teleport. Using it to escape and rejoin his old crew, he discovers that when he's not around they are murderous psychopaths and rapists who only keep it toned down in his presence because he's their best actual thief. Using his powers to take them down- witnesses think he's a new superhero while unaware that his alter ego is a thief and prison escapee. Fortunately, he's kind of liking the idea of being the good guy- and he never was a violent criminal in the first place.

Considering that rank only really effects the range of a teleporter- and you can stack power feats on it like mad, I imagine actually a pretty good one if you don't mind the comparably short range.

I'm currently looking for a way to be able to Mind Control multiple people.
- There's the Split Attack power feat, allowing me to attempt two or three controls simultaneously. at a lower power level.
-However, there's also the Power Extra of Duration, which would increase the duration of the control from Concentration (Lasting) to Sustained (Lasting). If this is legal, it'd let me mind control one target, then keep control over them until they break free or until I'm unable to take free actions, while spending further turns to pick up new controllees?

Heh. The spreadsheet I used to build the character appears to have left out all the numbers for the BB code copy paste.

Here's the actual version

Density 6 [Drawback, Permanent - 17pp]
The Goggles - Device 2 (Easy to lose) 6 pp. [Infravision 1pp, Counter Concealment 2pp, Analytical 2pp, Telescopic (x100 view range) 2pp, Datalink 4 (Medium - Cellphone Networks. Flawed Access Internet only) 2pp. Alternate Power (on Datalink) - 1x Variable Power Point (Only Skill Points)]
Immunity 3 [Cold, Fire, Pressure - 3 pp]
Quickness 2 [Flawed - Limited to Mental Tasks - 1pp]

Adds up to 27pp. Which looks dead on line. I'll

BACKGROUND

Born into a life on the streets, Jamie would take to thievery like a fish to water. Working his way up the criminal food chain he gained a reputation for two things. The first being that he was one of the best safe crackers and thieves in the city, the second being that he never went out of his way to hurt anyone- not even carrying a gun on the job. The Sons of Chaos recruited him for the first, willing to overlook the second.

While not exactly enjoying his time with the Sons, he did admit that some of the most profitable jobs he ever pulled were with him. What he didn't know was that when his back was turned the Sons were also rapists and murderers, hiding this from him because they thought he was too "squeamish" for it. One night while on a job a guard interrupted them, and another member shot the guard in the chest without a second thought. Jamie would stay behind to make sure the guard made it to an ambulance- resulting in his arrest. The lawyers knew he wasn't a violent criminal- so he didn't learn about the full depths of their crimes until he was already in prison. And what the Sons do to members that they are worried may talk.

Good thing he's been having these strange light-headed sensations, as a power to teleport his begun to manifest for reasons he won't even begin to understand.

PERSONALITY

Not the best guy out there by any means. He's a thief, and a damn good one too. But he's not a rapist, he's not a murderer, and he's not exactly pleased that he's been unknowingly associated with a group of them for months. That and they tried to have them shanked of course. Still, sometimes- it does feel nice being the good guy for a change.

Infinite? All I asked for was multiple. If I had asked to apply Shorter Action to it as well, being able to MC every person in perception range as free actions, then you'd have reason, but I feel kinda hurt that you're accusing me of trying to sneak in cheese when my first post said I've never learned the rules. :-( :-\ Kinda makes me feel like I won't be having fun here, especially since everyone else knows the game better and can build more powerful heroes.

Can I apply Extra Duration to Mind Control if I keep it within reason? Say, a maximum limit of controlled targets equal to the power's rank (6)? I'd lose them all the first time I was stunned anyways, if I read the rules on damage conditions and status right.

Personally, I'm thinking everyone involved is taking what the other people say a little too seriously. Let's all take a breath.

Glyph- I don't read a snap, more just a friendly warning. "Yes you can play a kender- you do know what this nation does to thieves, right?"

Mutants & Masterminds is harangued by the fact that it lacks in its nature a sense of balance.

If I make a character who has 18STR, the damage output of my unarmed strike (4N/L) is essentially the same as a bullet.  This carries on.  If I make a character that does 8N/L damage, that character is essentially doing the same amount of damage as a bazooka.  You'll always have players crafting characters to fit the game or fit the rules or fit the benchmarks.

True true.. It's a tricky balance, but makes for a fun game.

8 build points. We have 90 at Power Level 6. Power Level 10, the 'average', is 150 points.

That depends on the world that you're living in, Villain.

Benchmark wise, a guy with an Attribute STR of 18 is jacked, and is considered an olympic-level athlete (while a 16-17 is considered a professional athlete).  That means that an 18 STR (or 18 anything) is considered rare by human standards.  Of course, you can always have enhanced strength, and appear to be a guy who looks like an STR 12.  Spider-Man can lift ten tons, but he looks like a guy who has an STR 12.

Consider what I say a friendly warning.  Besides, multiple-target Mind Control doesn't strike me as particularly heroic -- gathering up a horde of blank-faced minions and throwing them at the bad guys is bad PR.  If you want the ability to influence crowds, look at Emotion Control.

Turning the boss villain's mooks against him en masse isn't heroic? I'm not sure how half-a-dozen targets qualifies as a 'horde' either, especially since it'd take 6 rounds of combat and failed saves on all their parts to collect. Emotion Control is too vague for specific control - and it's a single-target ability anyways.

Mind Control is usually a bad-guy sort of power, and I was really interested in looking for ways to subvert that tendency (the aforementioned mook-stealing, saving a suicidal jumper by puppeteering them to safety), especially with a character who's still trying to balance his desire to be the center of attention with a waking interest in actually doing good things. It's not practical or effective as a single-target ability to build a character around without severe mini-maxing and cheese, though - things strong enough to be worth giving up my turns to remote control will be too hard to dominate or outright immune, and things weak enough to be easily controlled would be a waste, since I could accomplish more by being a blaster/brawler.

If you're flatly against being able to MC more than one thing at a time (which would also rule out the Split Target effect) and/or being able to have a mind-controlled target while still being capable of taking actions, I'll have to completely redesign and rethink the character, since I can't in good faith make a hero who's nothing but dead weight.

I guess it could be, but I think it's more a worry that you'd break the game.

(I mean look at Matt Parkman.. if he could do more than a one guy at a time normally he'd screw things up. He occassionally does it but I'd write that off as extra effort.)

So we're supposed to use Heroes as our power benchmark? Can I be the immortal dude who steals everyone else's powers by eating their brains? ;D :D It's almost as cool as the psychic who can actually contribute in combat.

I don't recall anything in MC's description that mentions losing your own actions when using it, but if that is part of the power, then no, I'm not going to let you redesign it.  The restrictions are in there for a reason.

You could always pick up Telepathy and stunt the occasional use of Mind Control.

I was just using the example of Matt as  how a mind bender can work. :D And I seriously doubt that he'd allow a Sylar in the game. :D

There's nothing in Mind Control specifically, it's that the power has a duration of Concentration (Lasting), which consumes a standard action each turn to maintain or it dissipates. That's the part I was looking to change (by increasing the duration from Concentration to Sustained), maybe by splicing in the similiar line from Illusion (another Concentration power - a static illusion is maintained for free, active or changing ones take concentration)...comparatively, it might take Concentration to change orders given or directly control someone, otherwise they just carry out the last command they were given indefinitely, automaton-style. On the other hand, restrictions are indeed there for a reason - only 6 powers in the entire list have Concentration duration (ESP, Illusion, Mind Control, Mind Reading, Suffocate, and Telepathy). Suffocate would be indescribably broken without the Concentration, ESP and Mind Reading/Telepathy would just be silly and nonsensical. Illusion is the odd one out, since it lets you make ''fire-and-forget' effects, but that's only 1/6 if Mind Control stays locked at Concentration.

I'll just make it an Alternate Power of my Telepathy. Confusion should suffice as my primary combat maneuver instead. If I need a bunch of doods to be mine right then, I can Stunt the Split Targets feat and get up to 6 puppets anyways.
------------------------------------------------

Here's rewrite number 1, now complete with backstory. Only one request to make, though, the aformentioned vulnerability of his body armor to electrical discharges. The Power Loss Drawback would fit best, but it's vague on details (exposure to Electricity damage, lose all benefits of the Device and suffer a Defense penalty for...1d10 rounds, maybe? ). Would that be enough to qualify for a Minor, Uncommon Drawback (+1 point)?

Complications:
Mild Fame; Paul is already fairly well-known by the media for his antics, and so most of the apparatus to detail his new adventures were already in place. He doesn’t make a point of showing off, but still gets the occasional reporter or well-wisher. It hasn’t hurt his luck with the ladies either – if anything, the thrill of dating (or at least sleeping with) an actual superhero has made him even more attractive to many.

Potential Complications:
Ex-Lovers: Most of Paul’s ex-conquests walked away from their liaison both richer and happier. Someone could be holding a grudge though, which he would of course be completely unaware of. And if that someone turned out to develop powers of their own and decide to act on their grudge, things could get hairy for Paul.

Background:

Centuries ago, scientists believed that the universe revolved around the Earth. Nowadays, it is understood that the Earth revolves around the Sun. It would seem, however, that the universe revolved around Paul, at least from his perspective while growing up. The firstborn son and heir of Maxwell Clayton, CEO of Claytech Industries. He wanted for nothing – a father who doted on him whenever business allowed, a mother who cared for him in between innumerable social functions, and a string of excellent nannies and tutors to fill the times in between. As a natural result, he turned out indescribably spoiled, especially once he grew old enough to go out on his own. The young Clayton was the darling of respectable magazines and tabloids alike, spending endless nights and dollars out on the town in the company of one beautiful woman after another – actresses, porn stars, even occasionally normal girls who caught his eye. Privately, Paul believed himself to be God’s ultimate gift to the female half of humanity, expressing this with a long trail of broken hearts (and occasionally hymens).

Recently, though, he started to notice that something was different. While it might have been  a paradox to his self-centered mind, his success with women actually seemed to be increasing. He had always been an expert in seduction, but now they seemed to throw themselves at him even before he could work his charm. In bed, he was anticipating what would make his partners happiest without them needing to say it…almost as if he were reading their minds. Never one to turn down experimentation, it didn’t take long for him to determine that it was true – somehow, his natural talents had awoken into full-blown telepathic abilities. He could look into other people’s thoughts, communicate without speaking, and manipulate their feelings or even their actions.

He briefly considered keeping it a secret, continuing his playboy lifestyle as before, but discarded it almost immediately. Something in him hungered for fame beyond what the tabloids provided – and he had superpowers to earn it with! He started looking for things to do with his abilities, things that ‘heroes’ would do. Mind-controlling a man threatening to jump from his 15th-story office window worked well. Intervening in a street mugging by a pair of thugs at night, not so much. That encounter ended with a gunshot wound in his arm, waking him up to the fact that he was still a perfectly ordinary, squishy human being behind his growing mental powers – he could outsmart most criminals, but he couldn’t outsmart a bullet. So, he went to Claytech’s R&D department. With the reluctant blessing of his father, finally happy to see the boy doing something other than embarrassing the family name (even if it meant being a mutant), he ended up with an prototype suit of flexible body armor constructed from computerized nanofibres, capable of resisting or outright deflecting pretty much anything. Its only persistent flaw was a vulnerability to severe electrical discharges, causing the suit to lock stiff as the onboard computers shut down and rebooted. He took it anyways – after all, what were the odds he’d get struck by lightning while being a hero?

Impervious is limited to 3, not 4.

I'd model the suit as a Power Loss drawback, Common and Minor -- two points back.

Ok, I misread the section, I had thought Impervious was a +1 modifier to the entire power, not a +1 bonus to the cost of each rank. Impervious is capped at 1/2 PL like other stuff then? Just checking before I remodel the suit with its new -2 cost mod.
