So while I consider myself to know a bit about computers, I'm not opposed to asking for help. I got a brand new computer today, with Windows 8 installed. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to put desktop icons on the desktop, rather than go through the new funky app menu? Seems to me that you can if the program offers a desktop shortcut (ie, iTunes).

If it's something you use regularly, you can right click on it in the app start and 'Pin to taskbar'. Otherwise you have to search for the program file and create a shortcut on the desktop through the Windows Explorer.

That's what I've been doing, but if I do that with everything, I feel it gets too cluttered. I was hoping to have a nice, neat desktop this time around, unlike the horror that was my last computer.

Well the desktop icons you're looking for are just by finding the program in windows explorer, right click, create shortcut, save to desktop. It's still possible. It's just a pain.
