The Roads Less Traveled
Mage: The Awakening

A game set in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA.

How will you find the secret of death, unless you seek it in the heart of life. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond. Like seeds dreaming beneath the snow, your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.

I'm looking for a few players, 4-6 total but I have 1 so 3-5 additional, to join in a game set in the Hampton Roads / Tidewater area of Virginia / North Carolina, USA. Why there you might ask? Because it's a location I'm familiar with, and is sizable enough to accommodate most character concepts. There are military bases, music venues, and pretty much anything you might like to create.

Basic info: We'll be starting as "experienced" characters, which will be basic characters +35xp. This is to signify that you have done a little something since your awakening and joining your various orders, but not so much as to be really seasoned mages. Character sheets are not required for applications, what I will want is this:

Name: Who is you?
Sex: What is you? Not how much you want.
Concept: How do you think of yourself? How do others refer to you?
Path: Pick one. Legacies can be considered, but no left-handed paths.
Order: Pick one. Please. Apostates will be looked on with suspicion.
Virtue/Vice: From the list in the book.

Physical Description: What do you look like? What do we see? If we can't reasonably see it, allude, do not list. Leave some things for the imagination, it makes life exciting.

Personality: How insane are you? Are you a nice person, a vindictive jerk? This will come into play because a group of loners does not make a good group. "Plays well with others" is not a requirement, but "can work toward a common goal" is.

History: As much or as little as you'd like to share! At least tell me what happened between your awakening and the current time, what has advanced you within the eyes of your order, or however you choose to eventually spend that bonus xp. Exceptional histories, if chosen, might merit additional dots of backgrounds, or circumstantial bonuses.

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are: I'm looking for general posting rate, reliability, and what you want from this game. What can I provide to make this game more enjoyable for you? After all, if I only wanted my own enjoyment, I could take care of that. ;)

Well, this is too quite!

I'm the one he already accepted, here's my character proposal.  I like him, but if someone wants to do a shared history, we could mod him, or I could even try someone else.

Name: Mike Campbell
Sex:  Male
Concept: “I guess I’m a storyteller who has become his own hero.”
Path:  Obrimos
Order:  Adamantine Arrow
Virtue/Vice:  Faith/Pride

Physical Description:  Mike is a mocha skinned man, passing tall, with curly hair that he wears in a shoulder length pony tail and a neatly shaped beard.  He favors jeans or khakis, button down shirts—sometimes dressy, others rayon with a sexy anime character on them—and often a leather vest.  He usually wears a trenchcoat over this.

Personality:  Mike’s a cheerful guy with a youthful sense of humor.  Beneath this, he is deeply spiritual and only partially aware of exactly how dangerous he has become.

History:  Mike grew up in the suburbs of Baltimore, where everyone and his raven has a writing project.  Gamer, anime and cartoon fan, and all around creative person, he shared ideas with his friends and they wound up writing a small mecha comedy with his friends.  After attending junior college, he got up the resources to go to an art school in New York.

After finding a promising critique group on line, he wrote and illustrated a series he called, “Righteous Heathen Latrel.”  This featured a mix of super powered martial arts and sci fi.  His protagonist Kevin Latrel—the heir to an ancient school of Kenjutsu who’s students feel a mandate to bring the vengeance of heaven upon the truly evil.  Having been rebels and vigilantes through out most of history, the school was small and bore a bad reputation.  Nonetheless, Kevin joined the star fleet when a reptilian species invaded the allied worlds.  He was captured in action and put in a gladiatorial arena.  After three years he escaped in a stolen long range fighter and crashed on the occupied planet of New Israel.  A slightly isolationist world of largely colonized by Caucasian orthodox jews, Kevin seemed doomed to not fit in, but—by local prophecy—he received a mandate from God to become their protector and lead the rebellion against the alien oppressors.

The night after he got an offer of employment from Image comics,  Mike found himself looking in the mirror mounted on his closet and finding Kevin looking back at him.  After a moment, he stepped into his reflection and journeyed to the watchtowers.

Since then, he has apprenticed under an old Japanese man named Motoyoshi, earned a pre-Meiji katana, and joined the Adamantine Arrow.  He publishes his comic monthly through Image and makes a respectable living.  As part of his full membership in the Arrow, he has made an oath to defend religious diversity.

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are:  Hopefully I won’t be expected to post more than once every day or so!  I hope to have a good game and learn this system and setting better.

My first thought is to reuse Natch, but seems like we're already getting quite a few male characters on this.  Not that I have any issue with a game with minimal sexuality if that's what people want to go for.  I'll think on stuff.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

So far, unless people deleted posts, we have one male character. And I'm open to most anything the group wants.

Name: Alma Brown
Sex: Female
Concept: Well not to brag but I am the Amazing Alma after all
Path:  Thrysus
Order: Silver Ladder
Virtue/Vice: Faith/Lust

Physical Description: Alma has a Short bob hair cut that frames her face with her warm chestnut colored hair. Bright Hazel eyes, Has an athletic body with a healthy set of b cups and it is obvious she spends a great deal of time working out. Her nimbus tends to manifest as the feeling of just being on the cusp of being aroused but only to fade and left feeling teased.
Personality: Alma tends to be very pleasant to be around though sometimes her level of excitement can get on peoples nerves. Alma also tends to be a bit of an adrenaline junky. This is why she has a gone and made a living for herself as an escape artist. She also has a quirk of she does not prefer to use magic very often unless someone needs serious healing.

History: Alma was born between two awakened themselves one a successful business man and a Mastigos Silver Ladder name Jim Brown and Her Mother Janis Addler a  Acanthus Silver Ladder who the daughter took much after her as she was an Escape Artist as well. Though the Marriage between the two end in divorce and the father walked away giving up his custody of his daughter and promptly aside from a pay check wrote himself out. Also Janis Addler was given a Sleepwalker that new of True Magic and raised her alongside her gifted daughter as they worked together as a family Escape artist act. Also to give her daughter a trusted assistant that understood her uniqueness. Almas been known to be quite the peace maker in the consilium though her status in the Ladder might not get very high due to her initiative’s to integrate and accept the ways of the Free council as just as valid as the other orders.

The Awakening: I remember my awakening like it was yesterday, It was the day of my eleventh birthday after the guests left. To be honest I felt nervous all day long cause Mom told me that tonight began my lessons in escapology, When I saw my mom do the tricks it took my breath away but also left me afraid to that I might not be as good and get stuck and the first lesson was to learn to just understand the weight of your freedom rest solely in your hands. My first lesson was to be restrained in away that for me for my first time would cause so much anxiety and fear it sparked something to change in me that very night.

Alice and Mom set to work before I knew it I was trapped in a Canvas prison that made me give myself a hug and so much chains encased my body and then on top of that the rope came out binding me to a wooden kitchen chair and once Mom and Alice stepped back and took their seats on the couch and it sunk in quickly that I was really trapped I began to hyperventilate and thrash about out of control and between shallow breath I begged and begged to be let out. Mom just sat their  and "said you won't be let out till you conquer your anxiety and fear cause if you don't right now you will never make it as an escape artist"

Then at that moment it happened I felt engulfed by a white blue light my body tingling I could see the tower before me just pulsating with the energy of life and in the place with the tower I could see that I was free and with out much thought to it signed my name to the tower  and when I came back to my body I found myself free of the restraints all still done up the locks locked the knots still tied. I felt empowered but I also felt like I cheated Mom just hugged me and brought me to the couch explained to me what happened and that I was now awakened to a bigger world then I ever thought imaginable.

I explained to her that I felt I cheated and I asked my mom to put me back in so I could be sure that I can overcome the fear and anxiety on my own She smiled after you have a snack and some water Mom said and take a rest for a bit cause you just went through a lot. That is how it all happened and I am who I am today I know it s weird that it wasn't all tragedy and scariness like others went through and I get laughed at a bit for it but its alright it was special and I am glad it happened that way.

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are: With School and all not having a very fast post rate would be awesome. I would love to see a rather social game focused on the inner workings of a Consilium and a focus on them going through their normal lives as well as their Awakened lives. What I can bring to the game is a light hearted touch to a world beset with problems that the wod brings. Also have experience in this game as a member of the Camarilla fan club.

What can we expect theme wise out of this game?  :-)

Serious political intrigue? Spelunking? Sexy fun?

Also Muse, your character is an Obrimos in your sheet/ Do you mind making them Mastigos with different powers? I was thinking of going Obrimos FC Photographer.

Muse

Oh, dear, thorn.  Did I say something misleading?

The path with forces and prime is VERY appropriate to him.  (Even though I might refer a different power set for a katana guy.)

I certainly don't care if you do a mage with similar powers.  :)

There will be political tones, you can't have a Mage game without politics rearing its ugly head, I fear. There will be... exploration, less so spelunking. Sexy fun is up to the characters, I'm not one to drive that point home, but if several consenting adult mages want to have that variety of fun I'm not going to naysay it.

As to similar powers / Paths, with 4-6 I can certainly see some overlapping. I was once in a party with 3 Obrimos. One was Forces focused, a mechanic of sorts, he seconded matter. One was Prime focused, a real callback to the Celestial Chorus with some Spiritual leanings, and the third was a pyromaniac, Forces and Prime were his children and he loved them equally. So it's all in how you approach your particular part of the path. But yes Muse, your app says Mastigos, but your sheet was Obrimos last I looked. Mastigos are Mind / Somethin. Space? You could make a good mage of your concept that way too if you like.

Pumpkin Seeds

I am not so familiar with this new style of play, was more familiar with the previous.  I can try to get something pieced together though.  Might need a bit of help.  I do have the main Mage book though for nWoD and so will look over that.  Unfortunately I have a long work stretch coming up.

AndyZ

This is still only partially aspected in my head but figured I'd put down what I have so far.

Name: Orchid
Sex: Female
Concept: Haven't figured out how to put it in words yet.
Path: Moros
Order: Mysterium
Virtue/Vice: From the list in the book.  (Undecided)

Physical Description: What do you look like? What do we see? If we can't reasonably see it, allude, do not list. Leave some things for the imagination, it makes life exciting.  (Will look for a picture that fits my brain)

Personality: Somewhat goth aspected, weird and somewhat grim sense of humor, but hiding a pain within.

History: What's known about Orchid is that she was found Awake in the morgue, where another Moros helped her adjust to her new life and allowed her old life to be married in an unmarked grave.  There are rumors that the attempt was self-inflicted, though no one but her knows for sure.  She's abandoned everything about her old life and taken to the Awakened existence with a new sense of purpose.

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are: I'm usually good for posting every day and quite often on weekends.  That's most likely faster than most of the others.  I hope for a good story and a chance to explore some mystery.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

Thinking a Moros monster hunter type.  Drawing some inspiration from Van Helsing for this one.

AndyZ

Monster Hunter would most likely be Adamantine Arrow.  I'll drop the Moros spot to let you have that.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

Why hun?  I doubt the pair of them would be delving into the same aspects of the Moros.

AndyZ

Well, I was thinking Death 3 Prime 2 Matter 1.  If you want to go Matter heavy, that can work ^_^

Name: Jennie
Sex: Female
Concept: Monster Hunter
Path: The Adamantine Arrow
Order: Moros
Virtue/Vice: Hope/Wrath

Physical Description: Dangerous is the first word that comes to mind.  The kind of girl that mothers hide from their sons and husbands while fathers pray their daughters don’t walk in those footsteps.  Pale of skin with predatory eyes she seems like a creature of the night.  Hair darker than twilight falls down to her shoulders while lips of painted blood curl back in a wicked smile that promises thrills no one else can provide.  Through and through she is the hunter and that sort of feeling is one that everyone around her can feel.

Personality: Most would consider her an angry woman, she would say determined.  Some might whisper behind her back about her methods being dishonorable and corrupt, but she would just call them effective and efficient.  At a young age she learned that what the world sees is not always what is there.  From their perceptions about her father’s sanity to the mysterious disappearances of hikers, she knows that the outside world is often wrong.  So her view point of others is often short and cynical.  Though at her core she does believe that people are genuinely good and that in their hearts people can rise above the shackles of this world.  Jennie holds her hope close, turning a sharp tongue to the world in the hopes she is proven wrong one day.

History: They called him Mad Martigan or sometimes just Mad Marty for short.  Nobody ever left off the mad part because when you talk to walls, people sort of think you are mad.  Me?  I called him Dad but that was more a term of endearment and wishing on my part than any actual inclination of his.  He feed me, clothed me and kept me safe at night.  That was more than my own parents did so he got the job of Dad.  Whether he appreciated the title or not I’ll never know.  Anyway, he was Mad Martigan and my Dad whether the world approved or not.  He wasn’t really mad though, at least not the way people think.  He really did see things in the walls and really did see shadows move in the night.  Far as I can tell the old man really was a Hunter and he really knew how to stir up some shit.

He taught me things as he moved from vacant house to vacant house.  I learned how to start a fire with rocks when only a girl and learned how to hop onto a moving train when little more than a teenager.  He taught me to throw a mean right cross and to shoot straight under pressure.  I learned how to watch people for signs of the supernatural and learned how to make protections against things that stalked the edge of our vision.  The old man set me on the path to be a Hunter like him, but Fate had other things in mind I suppose.  Remember how I said he could stir up some shit?  Yeah he stirred up a whole heap’n help’n one night with some vampires outside Memphis.  He didn’t see them coming and we were face down before anyone knew what was happening.

Blood suckers sure can kiss I have to give them that.  Felt good to just let go, to die.  Fangs were set in place and I was on my way out.  Such a great way to go, just a blissful way into peace and death.  Never felt anything like that before or since.  I can see where the appeal of dying to a vampire comes from but of course I wasn’t quite ready to give up on life just yet.  Fate also wasn’t done with me just yet and so as I lay dying, the world around me changed into something I can’t describe.  Time must have slowed between that infinite place of worlds because when I came to the damned blood sucker was still finishing the job.  Mad Martigan had stood up then and was ready for a fight.  I was ready to join him and the night came to light then as we let loose with our cannons.  Too bad the old man didn’t make the dawn, but he went down full of piss and vinegar.  He called me his daughter when he finally saw the sun rise, dying in my arms.

Soon after that came Fruit Cake.  I call him that not cause he’s fruity, which he is but ya know to each their own, but cause he’s like Fruit Cake at Christmas time.  Nobody wants him around and regifts him soon as sees him.  Of course I got stuck with his fruity ass for a long while.  Can’t say Fate don’t have a sense of humor.  Now don’t get me wrong, Fruit Cake knew a lot about all sorts of things.  So he taught me well and by then I was ready to listen.  Somehow finding out death isn’t so far away makes those ears perk up like a hound dog on a scent.  Plus I had a bone to pick with a few people that wandered the dark corners of this world and was itching for a fight.  See’n as how I got these brand new weapons to use I figured Fruit Cake would show me how to pull the trigger.

Eventually we both got tired of each other.  I never liked him from the start and I’m guessing the feeling was mutual.  Seems my target practice was disturbing his study time.  Guess’n some of us are about the books and some of us are about gett’n things done.  So I walked out after I learned what I needed to learn.  Got myself good and clear of him before he decided that he was gonna get things done all over me.  I never said Fruit Cake wasn’t dangerous, just a Fruit Cake.  So I hopped a train and let the Fates have their way with me again.  Followed the tracks all the way up to Virginia.  Reckon they needed my help up there or else they’d have sent me somewhere else.  So I setup shop there.

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are: I can be a little slow especially when works picks up.  I consider myself pretty reliable and am usually among the last to go from a game and one of the first to push for the game to pick back up.  As for what I offer, I'd like to think my writing and creativity are assets to a game I join.  Aside from that I am more than willing to learn and pretty adaptable to what the group requires.  I do put a good deal of research into my writing in the hopes of authenticity, but do make creative sacrifices for the sake of fun.

Anon315

I like what I'm seeing so far, especially in the "people helping eachother out" aspect. You fearless ST has worked for the last 39 hours with only two meal breaks and 4 hours of sleep. He is exhausted and losing his tenuous grasp on sanity, and as this is not a Call of Cthulhu game, that's not a bonus. I will sleep and have more relevant replies to those already posting in several hours. Side note again: Two people can be the same path. This isn't like an Exalted or a D&D where we have roles. Your role is "I want to have a fun character", and a bonus is "I can work with a team, or at least alongside other people if I have to". This is the World of Darkness. It is a horror movie. You split the party, you say things like "I'll be right back", that is a challenge to your ST. The Dice Gods themselves help you if you are foolish enough to ask that dreaded question or its variants such as "What else could go wrong?"

World of Darkness. Bad things. Not world of fluffy cuddly bunnies. That having been said, it's not all horrible and depressing, it's just... gritty. Like if all the cops in NYC just suddenly stopped caring. Or given that we're in Hampton Roads (Which I encourage you to find a location within to call 'home', if you need help ask me), if all the cops stopped caring about sections of Newport News or Hampton. Like the bad parts of Gotham, maybe, if you're film inclined.

Again, sleeping now, replies later. Good work so far. Pumpkin if you need help and Marie isn't available, drop a line.

DarkNevaeh

Hey, i just found this thread.  Love Awakening.  Used to LARP it.

Im thinking Acanthus Free Council Researchy type?  Try to help round out that Blessed Cabal

Marie Reynolds

Yay a free council member now just need the crazy secret police religious zealots to show up and we have collected all the paths.

DarkNevaeh

no we need a Mastigos for all the paths...

Pumpkin Seeds

Hey Andy, maybe we can have a shared history through "Fruit Cake."

Anon315

My recommendation, as always, is to read the book. Specifically the paths. They have some fun ideas in there. Once you have an inkling of an idea, see how that could fit into our setting. Once that happens, it's basically just expanding the idea with minutiae.

AndyZ

Alright, Orchid isn't gelling.  Someone remind me what all we have so far.

So what is not gelling the Moros or the Mysterium cause we could use a Mysterium and I tend to not want to drag new players into the Muck of the Guardians. Have you tried building from the Mortal life and then see what fits the person you made?

DarkNevaeh

Im working on an Acanthus Research type.  I can mae i Mysterium if you wanna try something different.

Anon315

What we have so far:
Obrimos - Arrow,
Thrysus - Ladder,
Acanthus - Free Council,
Moros - Arrow

You:
Moros - Mysterium

And Marie is right. Anyone can "Awaken", make a person, then make them a mage.

AndyZ

Yeah, I know.  The idea just isn't gelling is all.  Sorry.

By the way, Anon, are you adding anything special to the rules for names or is it literally your birth name that you have to try to keep hidden in 21st century America?

Name: Anaximander ("Mandy" if you must) (birth name Martin Chore)
Sex: male
Concept: poor little rich boy becomes perpetual student
Path: Acanthus
Order: Mysterium
Legacy (planned): Sphinx
Virtue/Vice: Hope/Lust (the latter interpreted primarily as an unhealthy thirst for knowledge)

Physical Description: 6'2", thin, hazel eyes, longish brown hair, carefully trimmed stubble—the grunge look 20 years too late

Personality: Anaximander is a nice guy, a good listener, who manipulates people by telling them the truth as he wants them to hear it. He is a bit conflict-averse and will try to mediate disputes even when his mediation is unwanted.

History: Martin Chore was born with an entire silver tea service in his mouth, his mother a CEO traded between Fortune 500 companies like a ballplayer, his father a business consultant in the petroworld. Having borne a child just to prove she was a “real woman” as well as a financial shark, mother had no idea what to do with Martin, and father was never home; Martin was raised by nannies and au pairs, and attended the best boarding schools. He was a sufficiently gifted student to have attracted unpleasant attention from his peers, but he made an effort to be outgoing and friendly, and managed to avoid the worst bullying as a result.

Martin’s parents had no concrete expectations for him, since there was no family business to inherit; thus he was permitted to do whatever he wanted after reaching adulthood, and what he wanted to do was study. He skipped through half a dozen majors in college before settling on linguistics, and eventually pursued graduate study in that field. His fieldwork in northern Pakistan, studying the near-extinct Burushaski language, set the chain of thoughts in motion that would lead to his Awakening. Burushaski is a “linguistic isolate,” unrelated to any other language on Earth, but Martin found in it tantalizing hints of a larger scheme of language and thought, a proto-language dramatically different from any postulated by contemporary theories.

It was after returning from Pakistan, however, that Martin actually touched the Supernal. During a drunken bout of elevator-surfing with some engineering students, the elevator he was riding kept going up, and up, and up, far past where the roof of the building had to be. He dropped back into the cab, but could not find the “stop” button; in fact, the walls of the elevator cab seemed to have been overgrown with silver thorns and foliage. The bell rang, and the doors opened on a moonlit rooftop garden. At its center was a reflecting pool encircled by ornate runes inlaid in the pavement. One of them was missing, so Martin pricked his finger on a thorn and drew in the character that logically had to be there. He returned to his senses in the elevator cab, with his friends shouting his name.

The Mysterium found him within days after his Awakening, and he received his basic magical training in the New York City Consilium. After successfully defending his thesis, he received a call from a recruiter for the NSA. Divination told him that his destiny lay in that direction, so he turned his Prospect Park condo over to a leasing agent and departed for the Norfolk, VA naval base.

Do I need more here?

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are: I can post at least once a day. I'm reliable when it comes to games I play in; the only games I've ever dropped out of before they died a horrible slow death are games I was running, and either I cancelled the game before it started or I found a replacement GM. I would like to be disturbed, frightened, have to run to the bank for a reality check; Mage is a great game for mindfuck horror.

EDIT: added history

Barring any submissions in the interim, the current group (including our inspirationally challenged member) will be accepted, and I look to start things around Wednesday, the 5th. I have that day off, and should have pleeeenty of time to weave the tapestry that is unraveling about you. Look for a post by 5pm, CST (GMT-6 or something).

Any still interested, feel free to post. You have a few days, and this group isn't locked in, I just feel that if I get no others, this is a group I can go forward with. Assuming poor Andy can wake his imagination from its slumber.

Well, next question would be if we want to all be a cabal and have a big sanctum set up where we can work together.  It's significantly cheaper for 5 people to each spend 2xp for a point than for one person to spend 30xp for 5, and then we'd only need one Hallow.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

We don't have to start out as a cabal for that. We can drop our first 2xp each on it, assuming we can find an unclaimed Hallow (hello politics my old friend). Anaximander has the Resources to justify buying nearly any property, and the rest of you can contribute elbow grease getting it into shape to justify your xp expenditure.

Well we could all go the route of a premade Cabal or which I think would be more interesting build it in character and all just be members of the local Consilium.

What did you decide for names?  Also, are you using any unofficial errata or things like that?

Anon315, I'm curious whether you're going to put a limit on stripping starting Merits for Gnosis and/or stripping starting Wisdom for XP. In my experience, if stripping Merits for Gnosis is permitted but not required, anyone who doesn't finds themselves magically quite weak compared to the other PCs for the entire campaign. I'm willing to take that risk in order to build the character concept I have in mind, but I'd like to call it to your attention nonetheless.

No wisdom drops. Merits for gnosis is 3:1 merits points per gnosis. We're starting as semi-advanced characters, 35 xp after starting, so people CAN up their gnosis that way also.

Besides the true name question, I was wondering about how you do Morality?  Like, is it still a Wisdom degeneration to use magic to harm if you're using it in self-defense, or against non-humans?

In response to earlier true name question, I follow Dresden rules. They need your FULL name, and spoken from your own lips to gain a great bonus. Your basic name will give them a slight bonus. For instance: If you are Richard Aberforth Walker, and you go by Rich Walker, or Abe Walker, or Dick Walker, these are all different names. Sure, if I have one of these, it will make my magic working on you slightly easier, but if you introduce yourself (REALLY foolishly) as Richard Walker, and I can notice the inflection and think on this while I'm casting, you are in a sore way. If I look it up on your Facebook, or from your Driver's License, then you are minorly disadvantaged.

Wisdom degeneration: If you use magic to directly harm someone, it is an act of hubris, be they a human on the street, or a vampire attempting to gnaw your neck. You are USING MAGIC to HARM SOMEONE. Sure, a vampire is less human than a human, but it's more about the act than about the target. That having been said, if you use magic to save yourself from a vampire you didn't go hunting for, I might aid your roll to preserve wisdom or avoid derangement. If you're breaking into his haven and gunning for him without proper motivation, then expect no assistance. Vampires are people too. Some of them are better people than you are. I've known Golcondites.

Taking personal responsibility for your vulgar magic is a good way to get on his good side (ie. paradox backlash).  Obviously using vulgar magick recklessly is a bad idea, mostly it depends on the situation, even Guardians use vulgar magick if they have to in order to keep a greater breach from taking place.

Name: Orchid
Sex: Female
Concept: Bubbly on the outside, fragile on the inside
Path: Moros
Order: Mysterium
Virtue/Vice: Hope/Pride
Physical Description: Asian-American, long hair, cheap clothes but often in black.  She's also very thin, showing signs of malnutrition, though it's hard to tell at a glance if she's just too poor

Personality: Somewhat goth aspected, weird and somewhat grim sense of humor, but hiding a pain within.  She takes a while to warm up to people but tends to be great company once she has.

A few people have guessed, though.  Evidence points to her being a high school dropout (though she does seem to show quite an interest in learning, which defies understanding).  Her poor health and her talents at scavenging suggest that she's spent at least some degree of time being homeless, either mooching or making deals.  Asking too many personal questions will move past the point where she politely ignores them and enters the territory of active disdain.

Currently she's holed up in the basement of Anaximander, and is patching up the wiring and giving the place as much tweaking as she can manage.  The Hallow is a trickle of pure water that leaks into the root cellar, which is connected to the basement and very close to her room.

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are: I'm usually good for posting every day and quite often on weekends.  That's most likely faster than most of the others.  I hope for a good story and a chance to explore some mystery.

Re Z L

Thomas Smith
Goetic Psychologist
Mastigos of the Guardians of the Veil

Background:
An accomplished psychologist, he fell in love with his own brilliance.  He could diagnose anyone, disassemble their psyche in a matter of hours, piece together what he felt their problems were, and explain to them what they needed to do in order to fix their fractured souls.  Of course, what he perceived and what was reality wasn't always one and the same.  In truth he stopped caring whether people became better, and found ways to keep them coming back for more of his wisdom and advice--after all he knew best for them.

Originally from Boston, he set up his practice in New York City after his early success.  It wasn't long before he had many different hospitals referring patients to his care.  As his ego grew, his pride swelled, and the danger his advice put others in become more and more noticeable.  It was a disaster waiting for the right person to trigger it.

When he'd milked one patient for all they were worth, he sent the man into a dangerous spiral.  Convinced that he was unable to come up with the solutions to his problems himself, he created a need for the advice Thomas had been giving him--an addiction of a sort.  When the source was cut off he became desperate to fulfill that need.  Eventually need became wonton destruction as the patient showed up late one day in Thomas's office with a gun.

As the weapon was drawn on Thomas he saw not the desperate man before him, but a manifestation of...something he could not describe.  Like a demon of shadow and water enveloping the man holding the weapon, and more than that the pools of silver water reflected a hellish landscape, each with a scene depicting one of the various sins.  More disturbing still was the pool that reflected his own face with a hellish grin and glowing eyes.  Time seemed to stop and only reconvened as he noticed the blood coming from stomach moments before the pain erupted within his mind.  Another shot and he went down behind the desk.  Assuming himself finished the patient then shot himself, a vain effort to end the cycle of pain.

Though Thomas may have wished for it he was not dead.

The coma lasted only for a handful of days as the machines worked to keep him alive, but the nightmare that he lived seemed to last years.  Tormented by his own inner demons he eventually tore himself free and made his way through the realm of pandemonium and nightmare.  A labyrinth made of flesh, winds of scourging glass, a realm of hell not befit for anyone.  Within it he found a place of tranquility, a moment of beautiful respite against the storm.  Here he awakened to his true soul and to the Supernal Realm.

When he awoke the nightmare had ended, but the pain had only begun.

Troubled by what he had seen and what he had experienced, as well as his newfound magickal senses, he left his practice, saved what little resources he still had and went away.  He searched for a meaning in the darkness, a purpose behind what he'd felt, and a connection to something so he would not feel so alone.  He tried several religions to no real avail, though it wasn't long that he ran into another Mastigos in a buddhist temple...

Now he has established himself within Hampton Roads Virginia as a psychologist once again, having long since severed any ties to his old life.  Here he performs his duties as a Guardian of the Veil while pursuing the path of the Clavicularius, knowing that his shadows are always at the ready to grip him once more.

Personality:
Always calm and collected, he keeps a cool head and judges things as they come.  Stubbornness borne of mental resilience goes along with the decisions he makes.  Headstrong, his pride is his real weakness, keeping him from following advice, even when well-intentioned.  Despite this fact he is an excellent listener and is good at offering his own advice to others, skilled at motivating them to do things while also pulling information out of them.

An incarnation of The Tower.

Kin to the demon Duke Dantalion.

Appearance:
Younger looking than he really is, his eyes hold all of the age in their crystal blue depths.  Blonde hair only faintly graying, white skin showing little signs of being worn down by the years.  Usually with faint stubble on his face, he has something of a rough, if roguishly charming, appearance.  Most times he dresses in a professional manner, either a suit, or at least a tie with a nice shirt.  This can sometimes devolve into a messy

Quote:
"Sure, I can help.  Tell me all about it..."

Path:  Mastigos - Clavicularius Legacy

Order:  Guardian of the Veil - Ordeal Keeper

Virtue:  Fortitude

Vice:  Pride

Offer the game Game and expect from the game:
I hope to offer a character to aid in pushing the story along while also helping push the other characters towards their own or other goals, motivating them to push past their fears and engage their desires.  Additionally he should be able to give conflict with his skirting between morality and immorality due to his deep connection with his own demons.

I'd like something thought provoking from the game, the theme of mage being good for personal horror as well as understanding their own darkner natures and coming to grips with their proximity to the void.

I noticed you had only 2. I hadn't looked at anyone else's sheet except AndyZ's. In fact I didn't realize that anyone but you, me and AndyZ had posted sheets yet. (checks) OK, I've looked at Re Z L's sheet too now. If anyone else posted a sheet I missed it.

I've been the guy who didn't sell down his Merits when everyone else did, and it's awful. In my experience, the rotes you start with are about 75% of the rotes you'll ever know, since you have to trade for them and nothing you can start with has much trade value. That means you'll mostly be using improvised magic, which means Gnosis is half your dice pool.

I'm OK with there being only one character with starting Gnosis of 3, and mine not being it; every cabal has its superstar. If AndyZ is the only one who feels the need for 3, I may drop back to 2.

Anaximander and Orchid have a shared sanctum. You're welcome to join us now, or pitch in later. I figure Anaximander bought a huge property which is mostly dilapidated and is renovating and landscaping it bit by bit as time allows, so you can RP contributing elbow grease to the renovation as justification for buying shared Sanctum dots.

If the property is dilapidated, could have Jennie sorta show up thinking the place is abandoned and would serve as a good refuge for her intended monster hunt in the area.  Sort of an "accidental" run in on the property ?

She'd have to screw up her scouting pretty badly not to realize that it was being actively renovated. Maybe she crosses the fence line in hot pursuit of a monster?

Pumpkin Seeds

Could see that, course maybe she came to arrive there during a holiday season?  Few if any workers on the grounds and its cold outside, so she setup temporary shop.  Mainly wanting her to be on the location for a reason to bump into the group or at least a member or two.  Give her a reason to stick around and join them.

Makes me wonder if I was going too far looking for a way for us to meet ahead of time, but here it is if you like it, Riveda.  We can throw it out if you don't.

After awakening, Motoyoshi didn't give Mike/kevin too much time to catch his breath.

Kevin first met Anaxamander through a mutual friend before either of them awakened, when the first was still Mike, the second still Martin.  That friend was a doctoral student in Linguistics, Jacey Talia “J.T.” Kirk.  Mike gamed with J.T. on Saturday nights, when she made time for the hobby to keep her sanity.  Since then, he’d been visiting J.T. during office hours, asking her to check his Hebrew dialogue.

J.T. introduced them casually, and they exchanged a few words from time to time.  Before Martin did his research trip, they got to know each other better when Mike introduced a few Islamic characters to his series and needed help with Arabic.

He wasn’t able to pay, but he could buy dinner, and he was an attentive listener.

Works for me. What was Kevin's reaction when he found out good ol' Marty the language geek had Awakened?

(Anaximander's reaction to hearing that Mike had Awakened would be "Huh…" and a thoughtful look.)

I note that Kevin has no dots in Mentor, so presumably Motoyoshi sent him out into the world to sink or swim. Perhaps Anaximander's divinations encouraged Kevin to take up his quest in Virginia? Or did you have another reason why Kevin would wind up in the area of the game?

Muse

“Marty? Wow, the supernal world will let anyone in these days.”

Kidding, he’d give the man a strong handshake and say, “Glad to see a familiar face.  How’s…” gestures at the mingling consiglium, “all this treating you?”

That’s exactly my idea with Motoyoshi.  Gave him four years of more sword training than magic, saying it was all connected.  Witnessed an oath, left him with a katana and no particular resources in the secret world, but dropped him off somewhere where he could run into an old friend and form a cabal.

Mike’s RL work can be done from most anywhere, after all.

Name: Luca Simeon Rossa (Chronicle)
Sex: Male
Concept: Research and Development, Treasure Seeker
Path: Mastigos (Legacy Wanted-Path of the Book)
Order: Free Council
Virtue/Vice: Hope/Greed

Physical Description: Born to an Irish woman and a Romani, Chronicle stands at 5'9'', slightly toned, light tan like skin with crystal green eyes and darkened red hair.  Slightly thick lensed, thin framed black glasses adorn his face and his hair falls around his head like a curtain, coming almost down to his shoulders, which he usually keeps in a ponytail.

Personality: Chronicle can be very excitable...depending on what the topic is.  Research is his forte, but if it leads to either something that he can adapt into the modern world, or some ancient treasure that he can go hunting for, then he puts everything he has into completing that research.  Otherwise, Chronicle is kind, seeking the good in everyone.  Always wanting to share a laugh and a drink, he enjoy helping others and keeping spirits up.

History: Chronicle is the third son born to a an Arrow mage and a Sleeper.  While his mother knew nothing of her husband's mage work, Chronicle would be given stories of all kinds as he grew up with his siblings from his father, eventually learning to adapt them to help entertain his youngest siblings.  He also took up the violin, learning old Romani songs, and covers of new songs, another babysitting aid.  Being the third of seven, Chronicle was one of the middle children and was very close to his sister who came after him while playing referee to his older brothers whenever they got too hot headed over something.  Years would go by and one by one they would leave the house for college.  When Chronicle turned 17, his mother left his father, taking all of the children after she found a new man.  Their soon to be step father was an abuser, and Chronicle did his best to shield the younger siblings...but when his time came, he was pushed out by his mother.  He tried to call and visit but they moved before he got a chance and was not able to get in touch right away, so instead he focused on college.

During college, Chronicle learned quite a few different things.  Ancient history became a very big part of his curriculum, learning about the possibilities of buried treasures and the inventions of the past.  Soon he also took some computer science, engineering, music history and even a semester of ballroom dancing and self-defense.  During college he fell in love with a girl named Morgan.  Two years, they were together, taking some of the same classes, sharing an apartment for some time.  Out of nowhere...Morgan disappeared.  All that was left was a note, simply saying that she had to go and couldn't tell him anything.  It left him depressed for a bit, and he dived into a computer, learning more and more about it.

After graduation, majoring in history, Chronicle got a job at a local museum, now the age of 23.  His job was computer security, so he worked odd hours.  One night, after checking on a few things, he decided to take a stroll through some of the exhibits and came across one discussing Ancient Babylon.  It was then that he heard a gun shot ring out...

...the next thing Chronicle knew, he was waking up in a bed in a small apartment.  Someone was laying a damp cloth over his forehead as his eyes opened.  Taking a few seconds, he finally focused and realized he was now staring into the face of Morgan.  He sat up quickly, and sat back against the wall and stared at her.  "You disappeared..." was all he could say.  She nodded and sighed, taking the cloth that had fallen.  "I couldn't explain before what had happened to me.  It would have put you in danger."  He blinked and she took a breath.  "I'm a mage..."  And with that sentence she began to explain everything that had happened to her since her awakening, along with what exactly a mage was.  Turned out that the nightmare he had after hearing the gunshot was his awakening and he was now a mage as well.  Morgan, now being called Sapphire, went on to explain that he was a Mastigos, a mage of mental and spatial prowess.  She would take care of him for the next week before he struck out on his own.

Chronicle would go on to seek out other mages and learn what he could while traveling.  He soon joined the Free Council, believing in their idea of giving power to common men and finding the magic in the everyday, instead of just from some Mage Eden.  Putting his research and computer skills to work, Chronicle has become a welcome member of the Free Council and now at the age of 28, has move to the consilium of Hampton Roads, hoping to find some remnants of his family left, find out what happened to thema nd continue to grow as a mage.

What I offer to and expect to get out of this game are: I try to post as much as I can, though if something comes up, I generally try to mention it in the OOC.  I work during the day so post in the evening time or early morning before work and I will do my best to keep up with everything.  I bring about...5 years?  of Mage experience with me, having played a Thyrsus and Moros before this in long term LARP games.

I will be picking people at the end of the application process. Spots are still up for grabs. Based on who I have in two days' time, I will form a group. Then we will start. You have two days.

After some reconsideration, switched Orchid's Vice to Pride.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

Cool.

(I assume you were replying to me? You didn't quote me.)

DarkNevaeh

LoL yes I was, sorry.    I hope that I get to join and bring some of that back story to light.  I'm working on an actual sheet...those always take me longest.

Anon, quick question- are all books in play?

Anon315

#82
All WW Mage books are in play. If you're not sure about something, ask me. If I don't have the book, I might ask what you're talking about, such as your Legacy, but generally until it has mechanical impact, it's not a grand concern. And I do have a long list of books.

EDIT: Also, to those PMing: Put whatever you want on here. Whatever you feel is enough to relate your character to me. If you think three sentences will get the point across, write that much. If you write six pages, gonna tell you now, I tl;dr after about four-six paragraphs a section. I'll read it all eventually, but during selection process, time is critical, and I'm working 60 hours a week right now.

Fair, thank you.

and my Legacy comes from Grimoire of Grimoires under 'The Loquacious Grimoire'.

Discovered a math error to the tune of 10 XP in Anaximander's sheet. Dropping back to Gnosis 2.

Gave my once-over to the apps, they look good. None too long for me to read in excruciating detail later. Still time (one day, maybe day + few hours) if Trilogy wanted to toss a hat into the ring. I dunno... originally I had wanted a smallish group, but... I've played with most of you. You are good and fairly dedicated roleplayers, and given that my rare running of games has more to do with my disillusionment with internet RPers than an unwillingness or dis-enthusiasm, I may just strain myself taking all of you. 7-8 is a slightly large group, but... it allows for potential splitting of the party without TPK. Yes I use these terms. Had a game where they pulled a Scooby Doo and split the 5 into 2/3. 2 mages with about 50 xp versus 4 ghouls. Shaggy bit the dust. I recommend never going out in groups less than 3-4. Bad things happen. To reiterate something I've had to state for groups going back nearly 20 years now:

This is the World of DARKNESS. You aren't going to win the lottery without more fate than you should have. Cars break down. Everything that can go wrong will, but only if it's the least opportune time for it to do so. It will rain when you're wearing white and don't have an umbrella. Double chance if you're cute (Luca). That doesn't mean there can't be joy. In even the darkest world, a light can shine through. It just gets snuffed out rather more readily than otherwise. Just expect that you may have to be that light for yourselves. Bad things happen in this world; to good people and bad people alike.

Zoinks!

Well 7-8 also allows for the initial drop that I find many games experience.  Not because of lack of dedication but just life events/expectations of the game/whatever occurring.

It may work well to have the group split into two allied cabals if we do have everyone after the first few scenes though

And with the passing of my noon hour, applications are closed. I will have selections in the next several hours, and starting threads up for characters, OOC chatter, and IC DOOM! DOOM I say!

This is what I have. Seven. That's one over what I wanted, but owing to the fact that I'm horrible at excluding people when it's like one or two people as opposed to a dozen (Somehow being a bigger jerk makes me feel less bad... probably because it's spread out), and also the fact that one or two might fizzle out in the offing, I'll go with this group. I will desire character sheets by the end of the week (and my weeks start on Mondays), as I don't foresee anything Earth-shattering occurring before then.

IC thread up soon... a powerful tiredness has struck me, and I had to indulge in a nap.
