Dark Hearts
Passion & Corruption

Primary IC Thread
OOC Thread

Introduction
All is not well on the isle of Ilmyon.  Humans squat amidst the ruins of an ancient civilization in the port town of Hard Harbour.  The roads are overgrown and constantly beset by beasts and brigands.  Every nook and cranny teems with hostile wildlife.  Life is cheap, but living is expensive: many left in the port lured by tales of adventure turn to crime or suicidal forays into the wilderness in search of enough loot to get them through the month.

Character Creation
All officially published Wizards of the Coast content is permitted.  Unearthed Arcana is not permitted.

Stat generation is done one of two ways, 27 point buy or rolled.  Rolled stats are (4+1d6+1d8) freely allocated.  Roll eight times, discard the lowest two.

You always get your maximum possible roll for HitDice on character creation and level up.  You're gonna need that extra meat.

Any race/gender/alignment is permissible, with the understanding that the nature of the corruption that lurks is not strictly "evil"--you have no way to align yourself with it, short of becoming intentionally defeated.

Alongside the normal sheet please list your preferred demise: death, imprisonment, or corruption.  Regardless of preference you will be removed from play just as thoroughly upon your demise, the key exception being that those who have been corrupted may return as mini-bosses (potentially piloted by the player) and those imprisoned may be the subject of rescue attempt quests.  They may have taken statistical damage due to harsh treatment depending on the nature of their imprisonment.

ReRolling & Retiring Characters

When your character is removed from play, you may create a new character at one level below your old one (minimum level 1).  You get no additional material compensation for this loss, rendering you potentially quite poor.  If you would like to change characters, you must retire your current character and either re-roll as if you'd been removed from play involuntarily or change to presently retired character.  You may only retire a character once per real week.  If you wind up with multiple characters in play (i.e. your imprisoned character is rescued) then you must retire down to one current character.

Character Sheet
Given the plethora of ways to make a 5e Sheet, I'm only going to include RP information in the eSheet.

Ilmyon & Hard Harbour
Ilmyon

Ilmyon is a jungle island a bit too far off the beaten path between continents to be regularly visited by the more reputable traders.  Those bound for parts unknown, looking to lie low for awhile, or interested in the ancient ruins of the island's lost civilization come here.  Most leave as quickly as they're able.

What rural folk exist are strange and insular, keeping to very specific rituals and protocols to avoid the dangers of the island.  Some say ungodly sacrifices are carried out in the dead of night beneath the full moon to sustain the farmers' compacts with foul entities, but these are unsubstantiated rumours at best.

People are generally downtrodden, but not overtly cruel.  Expending the energy to harm others means less to see to oneself.  Still, if it is a question of survival or duty, few denizens of Ilmyon will hesitate to shed blood.

Hard Harbour

This majority-human settlement is the last bastion of civilization on Ilmyon.  Its denizens squat amidst ancient stone structures and beautiful edifices.  Far from the modern settlement overgrown walls in the jungle imply this was once a vast, fortified city.  The only thing left to indicate this now are the high white walls around the keep.

The Governess rules by no right but her own, and she intends to keep it that way.  She is 500 years old, and if she has a name, no one beyond her castle's walls dare speak it publicly.  Occasionally a naval power will jockey for control and try to install a vassal.  This has lead to a level of paranoia about outsiders of any influence, who she has monitored and dealt with at first sign of treachery.

Most of the people in Hard Harbour have never known life on another shore, and few have ventured more than two miles from the town--if that.  The island is a mystery to them, and while the Governess is said to keep extensive maps of the island none are publicly available.  Ships attempting to more closely map its coasts have a habit of never returning.  This leaves even the geography beyond the harbour itself something of a mystery.

Adventures & Parties
Adventure leads will circulate around town.  Some are public knowledge, others must be pieced together from clues, and yet more will only reveal themselves to those who have delved deep into the jungle.

When multiple people are trying to go on the same Adventure, they may attempt to form a Party.  The Party max is four (4).  If there are too many people seeking to adventure, people who have been in play without going on an Adventure the longest gain priority.  At least one Party member must know of an Adventure for the Party to go on it (nb: Co-DMs may have higher or lower party ceilings).  Adventures which are not cleared have their state "atrophied" until another Party returns to fight through the aftermath.

If a group leaves the Adventure site and returns to town that is considered the end of the Adventure for Party formation/foray purposes as if they had all been killed.  The Adventure location will stay similar to how it was when they left, although it will "atrophy" towards more danger being present\things moving around.  For example if you left some cheese where rats could find it, when you return it may be eaten.

Original OP

Hello friends.

I'm considering running a 5e game for no more than 4 characters on an adventure at a time (but infinitely more in the stable able to freeform RP).

The idea would be that this is a dangerous world and you begin at Level 1.  You will have the option of dying or being "corrupted" if\when your character dies (removing you from general play but opening up a potential PvP encounter as a mini-boss).

Setting would be deadly and dangerous, Neutral is the assumed default and only rare paragons or the truly perverse rate as Good or Evil (PCs tend to be trendbreakers).  There'd be a central bastion of civilization, and reasons to go outside--needing money to live, adventure, potential for renown, etc.  Combat would be tactical and high stakes.

With it being Westmarches style I'd be open to co-DMs, if I acquired them they could run adventures at a max party size of the co-DM's choosing.

Is there any interest for this sort of game?

Westmarches Style
If you're unfamiliar you can watch a video on the subject, but for those looking for the q&d:

Westmarches Style campaigns are ones without a singular party, but a collection of people who sometimes form parties.  They go out on discrete adventures to gain loot, glory, eXP, and importantly: information that will uncover new adventures and advance the various plot threads strewn about.  This means you won't always venture forth with the same group of people, or at all, giving time for free form social RP in Hard Harbour.  Here you can plot, ruminate, socialize, and try to make a non-adventurer living as best you can.

I love 5e; this could be fun.  What's Westmarches?

From what I can gather, it's a game style that has a large pool of players and / or characters who opt-in on given adventures rather than havign a set "party" - I think it could best be flavored as liek an "adventurer guild' setup.

Matt Colvile does a decent job of explaining it in this video:

I'd have to check this video of Matt Colville first, but apart from that; what are the limitations? Is Volo's and Xanathar's content allowed? Is all PHB content allowed? This sounds like the type of game for which you'll want to min-max your character for combat as much as possible just to survive the challenges ahead while focusing less on social and exploration skills.

Jezabelle

Given the amount of interest voiced, I will improve OP significantly with details.

All officially released Wizards of the Coast content is permitted.

Unearthed Arcana is not permitted.  I know, it's a bummer.  I like some of it too, but for the balance I'm hoping to strike it'd be hard to incorporate.

Matt's video is excellent but here's the tl;dr on Westmarches: a large group of players exists in some location.  They occasionally venture out onto an unknown map to quest in a group, not always the same group and not all of them (see my 4 at a time limit).  They reveal more information about the map and area, uncovering new plot threads or advancing other ones.  In this way the whole place is interwoven.

Oh wow, okay, I'll admit, I quite like that idea! ;D

I generally play a Cleric, but I'm tempted to play either a ranger or a wizard for a change. I quite like bards as well, but I think that class would be too weak to be of much use.

Could you tell me how much percentage you expect to be combat, social encounters, and exploration? Originally, I thought it'd be mostly combat, but what you told me made me rethink that.

You're probably looking at 15% social skills, 25% exploration skills, 60% combat.  The combat will be tactical and difficult.  The social and exploration skills will mostly be to navigate and gain advantage in dungeons\wilderness environs, for example there may be some less-hostile-than-normal dungeon denizens to negotiate with or secret passages to be revealed.

Adventures will vary and not all will adhere closely to that--some will be more straight-up fights, others will be infiltration or exploration focused.  They will still be difficult!  And deadly!  And include Hard Difficulty Encounters.  But there's going to be a breadth of options, and it'll depend on what a plurality of players want to take for their Adventure when the time comes.

I think that it could be fun to play a Bard in such an environment, if they croak you can always re-roll.  Of course, there will be some anxieties for the group over someone coming in with a less-than-optimal character but I would encourage people to take a relaxed approach and avoid any undo stress.  I will allow you to re-roll at Character Level -1 in the event of untimely demise, meaning the largest losses they'd incur by a wipe would be material and emotional.

This isn't to say your whole existence will be in dungeons, but when you're back in town proper it'll be comparatively free-form.  In this sense you are "unloaded" from the DM's load.  This allows us to put no upper cap on players in a System game, but also means that if we don't get a "Town DM" you won't be able to do much skill use in town.  I would allow you to ply a trade, operate a business (supposing you can put together the wealth), or do something similar in town that involves rolls but not get into mechanical fights that aren't part of an adventure.

Caitlin

Actually, I see it as a perfect training exercise in combat for tabletop. ;)

The biggest question is what I should focus on as a class. I've got quite a bit of experience now as a cleric, although granted, most of it is low level stuff, but I haven't gotten to play ranger or wizard a lot yet. I'm tempted to try my luck with a wizard though. I have a character sheet already completed for another game I ran and I managed to get the wizard up to level 4 in that game. It'd be interesting to see how far I could take him this time. :-)

That could be fun!  Do note that under charGen there's a unique stat generation method.  You can certainly import characters, but you'd need to restat them.

Caitlin

I typically use 27 point buy system and I used that method on that character too. Is 27 point buy stat alright?

Hmmmm.  I'd considered making people roll but now that I think about it, that doesn't really serve a purpose other than convention.  27 pb is acceptable.

Caitlin

The big advantage of 27 point buy is that you'll end up with a balanced party as well, stat-wise anyway. I'm DMing a 5e game myself too and I find that it makes it a bit easier to balance encounters knowing that each character is about equally strong.

I've never been big on well balanced parties, some of my players are obsessed with the concept but I'd run all Rogues or a party of Monks any day.

Voicing my interest!

What is the possibility of sexual content playing a submissive male? Looking at Jezabelle's preferences, that seems pretty unlikely! I'm fine with playing a female character if that's what is 'necessary' for the game.

I didn't see this answered outside of the original post (which I wasn't sure how accurate it was): Are we're starting at L1?

Heavily considering a Rogue or a Bard.
Like what you see? I am currently looking for new plots!

I'm fine with dominating males (perhaps my site preferences are outdated in that regard?), the world will be a bit porny and if you pick the "Corruption" demise option you can definitely expect something lewd.  There's also the possibility of player on player.  You can expect some versions of monsters to be porned up, generally the humanoid ones as I didn't advertise this as bestiality-friendly.

You can fuck and get fucked in the town, and I'm not ruling out lewd occurrences on the adventure trail--I'll go thru the On\Offs of everyone in that Party before making a call on what\how to include such content, as well as your listed IC\OOC sexuality/preferences.

Yes you still start at Level 1.

Good to see we've got some interest, once I've got three (3) approved characters I'll post the IC & OOC threads.  For now, ask or collaborate or bounce ideas as you will.

Name: Irvine Duskthorn
Race: Human (variant)
Gender: Male
Age: 20

Sexuality (IC): Heterocurious (fine with futa but not strictly male x male)
Acceptable Encounters (OOC): Non-Con (ask/request), dub-con (always), male x male (never), hetero (always)

Physical Description: Standing six foot tall with ruffled brown hair and amber eyes with rough cut handsome visage Irvine is hard man not be noticed by others. More so as he carries himself with confident swagger in his steps and prefers wear bright or attention seeking clothes. But otherwise besides color his clothes are mundane and rustic in origin. He carries a darkwooden staff with embedded dark red gemstone in the gnarled rooted tip.
Personal History: Irvine is son of a carpenter and he was very much expected to pick up the family trade since his elder sister vanished one day in trip to the woods for fresh timber. Irvine and his most immediate family lived in farm which they ran (along doing carpenter work here and there on demand and payment) one mile off from Hard Harbor (like most farms do). One night of full moon dark beasts emerged from the woods which caught his father offguard, devouring him as he and his mother ran. They reached the safety of their home but beasts were relentless and did not give up, trying break through the door and windows and during that time he muttered a prayer, for any power or anything, to listen and hear his plea and offer him power to save his life as he did not wish to die.

Then a femine voice spoke; "You can have power, but every power has it's price.....I ask you perform sacrifice for tribute to me." In given circumstance only thing of value he could sacrifice was his mother....so he grasped her, opened the door and threw her upon beasts as he shouted into the night; "Now give me power!" As beasts feasted upon his mother, he was infused with eldritch forbidden power which fueled his veins with hellfire and he struck with fury of hell upon the beasts which were caught off guard by his bravado and new powers! It did not take long for beasts crumble before him and leave him bury remains of his family.

As he lied of about events of the night to locals, they praised him as a hero who saved locals from the beasts (and faced tragedy loosing both parents), so he is praised as local hero and expected to do more heroics! Much for his chagrin, however he has learned to see bright sides being a hero; free drinks, people trusting you, buy more eagerly your services as carpenter and women more easily spreading their legs for him. However the voice which whispered to him urges him on to explore, increase his power and promise greater things await for him. More so every night he has disturbing, corruptible, sort of dreams which he barely remembers as he wakes up.

Name: Lena Thunderstorm
Race: Human (variant)
Gender: Female
Age: 21

Sexuality (IC): Pansexual
Acceptable Encounters (OOC): another player dom her: ask first; anything else: yes, always

Appearance: Tall and strong Lena does still have the body and the looks to get away with whatever she wants without having to resort to violence. Heavy and firm plump breasts, long shapely legs ending in a exquisitely toned bubbly butt and a lovely face framed by her dirty blonde long hair, and she perfectly knows how to use this to her advantage though she still loves to get rough as well. She will almost always be found wearing heavy armor, a dark armor that exposes her assets allowing her to get her way whenever she wants, heavy metal boots run high up to her mid thighs exposing her cheeky pantyhose thanks to the slit of her skirt while the front of her armor clings tightly to her ample bosom leaving nothing to the imagination though offering her great protection despite the fact that it still allows a hand to slide in between her luscious orbs.

She has little concern for the hindrance such heavy armor would offer as she is not one that would hide from an encounter, instead her usual hip sway drawing lots of attention to her. She also has an emblem of her deity tattooed on the outer side of her right breast.

History: Having lived all of her life in the outland Lena learned to be tough and self-reliant though she grew up in a pirates gang so she learned about teamwork too. Being the strongest she was always in front to cover everyone from imminent danger whenever they assaulted a ship or razed a port town. That was not enough though as one day a long shot spell was cast directly to the leader of the gang, they still won and killed every opposition but their leader fell as well. Lea was heavily shocked by this event and all they could retrieve from the responsible spellcaster was a book written in an exotic language that none of them could understand. With no further ties bonding her to her former group she took the book and departed looking for an answer, she didn't have it clear herself what was she looking for but she did have clear she needed a new master. With the mysterious book in her hands and none of her former teammate being able to dissuade her Lena set her way into the unknown.

After loosing her leader she began a search for a new motivation to live and a new leader to follow, recently she met lots of people and she wasn't able to decide yet to follow only one so while not usual on her she submissively obeys both.

Personality: A bad ass and a troublemaker who likes to do what she wants and enjoys picking up fights and yet very protective and even possessive with her friends, when likes something or someone she will just take it. She is very dominant with everyone excepting to her leader whom she will be very submissive to.
Trait: To me, a tavern brawl is a nice way to get to know a new city.
Ideal: I’m committed to my crewmates, not to ideals.
Bond: I’m loyal to my captain first, everything else second.
Flaw: I follow orders, even if I think they’re wrong.

Mister Ugly

Yes, as they are officially published WotC material.

Doesn't mean the Sword Coast exists, i.e., there is no such organization as the Harpers, but I'll allow the classes mechanically and find another explanation for the class's existence.

Everything is good but before I can approve, if you could explain how you got your stats?  I put your stats into this calculator and could not quite get it with 27 points, I'd assume you tagged Wis and Str to get your 16s but came up 2 short for the 12 Charisma.

We've got a Neutral Evil and a Chaotic Neutral thus far, I'm really looking forward to how various groups form and play out in high-stakes dungeon encounters.

Aaah, must've been it, I figured it was a feat but saw no mention in the ones you'd taken and figured I'd ask before looking it up.

Anywho, we're one character approval away from posting the ICs and OOC, but don't worry if you don't have your sheet in yet--if I get the sense there's people going to put their sheets in soon I'll delay the 1st Adventure's departure until they can join the game (assuming there's less than 4 going on it).

In terms of knowing other characters I highly recommend having some pre-established familiarity with other characters, Lena Thunderstorm's reputation as a bad apple precedes her and Irvine Duskthorn is a Folk Hero.  That should save us a lot of the pages on pages of introduction that kill lots of games, not that I'm going to tamp out dialogue but it helps establish "why would I think this was a good person to adventure with?"

Alrighty, we'll see how things go but I'm not anticipating we get going much quicker than that if the present rate of interest and application holds steady.

Cataclysmic Archangel

This looks interesting.  I have a D&D 5E character that I'd like to try out, however I think he's terrible for this scenario.  I've played him in a few different 5E games, and each and every time the game has ended abruptly, usually within the same 1st day IC.  Might try to give him a whirl again.

Unfortunately he's kind of a mixed multi-class, and doesn't really come into his own for a few levels.  I'll need to think about how he might function at 1st level, whether he'd die super quickly.

Gender: Futa (Let's go with penis instead of a clitoris, vagina, no external scrotum but she has one internal testicle and one ovary.  She's theoretically capable of getting someone pregnant, but the sperm count of her semen is significantly lower than that of a male, so it takes a lot of effort and it's rare to the point where she has no fear of causing a pregnancy in casual dalliances.  Granted, one in a million still means there's a chance if the story calls for it in some way...)
Age: 143

Sexuality (IC): Gynosexual
Acceptable Encounters (OOC): Only interested in females, not interested in serious dom/sub relationships but could be interested in experimentation.  NC should be discussed beforehand, but Nara will very likely be willing in the occasional liaison.  The more humanoid, the better.

Physical Description: Nara wears the traditional outfit of those from the Azure Monastery.  Her long golden hair is usually left to flutter behind her, and she knows how to fight so it never accidentally gets in the way.

Personal History: The Azure Monastery is a strange and mysterious spire, the upper levels of which are closed off to all save the archmage who lives within it.  Periodically, orphaned children and infants are brought within, and are given a chance at a better life.  At adulthood, however, each is asked to leave in order to make room for more orphans.

Nara had no idea how difficult life was outside until her hundredth birthday passed.  She's never fully felt like she belonged, and has traveled far in the last few decades, eventually coming to the island with the city of Hard Harbour.  She hopes to explore throughout the island, and eventually beyond.

Demise Preference: Probably Death, possibly Imprisonment depending on circumstances.  Being captured and kept by a female humanoid as a sexual plaything could be fun depending on what the villain in question is.

Female sexual encounters, but NC can be okay in the occasional scenario.  Best to ask first.

Nara had no idea how difficult life was outside until her hundredth birthday passed.  She's never fully felt like she belonged, and has spread outward towards the fringes of the city and beyond as a result.  More comfortable in the wilderness than in Hard Harbour, but unable to survive on her own, she's forced to try to find friends with her limited social skills.

Demise Preference: Probably Death, though I might be talked into Imprisonment depending on a few factors.

Sheet: https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1422890

I took a couple liberties with the background, like changing a few of the personality traits and having a piece of rubble from the Azure Monastery instead of a hunting trophy.  Hopefully that's okay, and if not, I can change it.

1.  Please give us an "anatomical sketch" link on Gender as to what your Futa is like (is there a vagina as well? Are there balls?).  I've seen lots of conflicting versions of what  a Futa technically has downstairs.  This would be entirely for the benefit of your fellow players, it's approved regardless.  I just like to nip any misunderstandings in the bud because I've seen there be plenty of confusion over this in the past.

2.  "Nara had no idea how difficult life was outside until her hundredth birthday passed.  She's never fully felt like she belonged, and has spread outward towards the fringes of the city and beyond as a result" implies the Monastery is on the island, this is not going to be allowed I'm afraid.  It's somewhere(tm) off-island.

3.  Please update the Acceptable Encounters to include a brief description a la other players', I get that if someone wants to get lewd with you they'll need to check your O\Os but this is meant as an on-character shorthand.

Approved.

That's three approved characters, IC and OOC going up shortly.

My sheet is almost ready (just have to fill in the personality traits) and I still have to come up with a history, but otherwise my character is ready. I'm not sure about the background equipment though, it contains a lot of double stuff compared to the class equipment pack. Is it okay to sell that stuff for gold coins and just save that money up until I can buy something more useful?

It's been 11 pm here, I'll add the final details tomorrow.

Avatar:
Name: Calner Nackle
Race: Forest Gnome
Gender: Male
Age: 331

Sexuality (IC): Hetero sexual
Acceptable Encounters (OOC): Calner is a Dom gnome who enjoys subjugating people to his will. He specializes in bondage, but also knows his way around whips. He’ll fight until death if anybody tries to dominate him, for he’s quite sick of people always picking on the little folks. He will die trying to set someone’s head straight and to prove that gnomes aren’t to be picked upon.

Physical Description: Green/ white hair, brown eyes, tanned skin
Personal History: Calner has lived a long and mostly merry life. He raised a family, had eleven children and was a happy community man in his peaceful village. This all changed when a necromancer passed through the area and needed corpses to fuel his undead army. Seeing no corpses around, the necromancer decided to create some first and he laid waste to half the forest. He raised the animals first, but the forest gnomes and wood elves followed soon after. Calner was among the few surviving gnomes and elves. He forged a pack with the wood elves and his remaining gnomes to study magic and beat the necromancer at his own game. Calner turned out to have a knack for magic and was one of the most promising students who set out first into the world, while the others stayed behind to train longer in an attempt to master their magic.

Actually, you may want to take a look at his cantrips... I took the Friends cantrip specifically to solve this problem with his low charisma. Having a low charisma makes it harder to barter yes, but it shouldn't become suddenly impossible, especially not with a cantrip that gives me advantage on all charisma rolls, or is the Friends cantrip effectively useless in your campaign?

Hmmm, I missed that one when making my pass for relevant things, assumed it'd be a Charm spell or similar.

"For the duration, you have advantage on all Charisma checks directed at one creature of your choice that isn’t hostile toward you. When the spell ends, the creature realizes that you have used magic to influence its mood and becomes hostile toward you. A creature prone to violence might attack you. Another creature might seek retribution in other ways (at the DM’s discretion), depending on the nature of your interaction with it."

Certainly useful, there's a duration of one minute, which is enough time for at least a single transaction.  So over the course of a day moving far enough after making the sale that they cannot successfully id you to other merchants (being small helps) you should be able to offload it.

I'm still not going to allow 1:1 gold liquidation out of game, I'd need to look up the specific passage, but the DMG warns against allowing PCs to sell their items for their full value for a variety of reasons.  Friends could, is used cleverly over the course of the game, be used to get a very nice price for something indeed (supposing you don't just roll low twice being unskilled and at -1).

More or less, I'd allow you to liquidate at 75% value with the caveat that the merchants you screw actually exist and on the off chance you encounter them again will not remember you fondly.  They're not going to try to murder you, but they may be pissy in other ways--the nature of the campaign means almost all "mechanical activity" will be out of town so that's not too big a risk to take.  Additionally, I won't make you roll, because we'll assume if Friends doesn't give you the number you'd need you'll simply part ways with the merchant and try again on another one, eventually selling all items for a decent value.

AndyZ

Not my place to say anything, but are you sure you want the merchants hostile to you?

It is a city, it's not like he's going to literally every merchant in the course of offloading some ink, a small knife, and some other stuff.

It'd be more of a "my isn't this awkward" should he run into them again than a "Reputation: Vilified" situation.

Anyway, this is recruitment, we can move further discussion to the OOC or PMs at player preference.

Caitlin

I suppose I'm better off selecting different starting gear then.

You're right about not allowing a 1:1 gold conversion, that's indeed in the DMG. There is nothing in the DMG about giving people with a lower charisma a harder time to sell their items though. I mean, a -1 is right below average (10). In practice, he's a little socially awkward. Being autistic I know all what that's like in real life, but it doesn't prevent me from getting a good price for stuff I sell, especially since I'm also very intelligent, which compensates the social awkwardness. Considering his far above intelligence, Calner would know when he's being cheated out on when it comes to selling his goods compared to other characters. I'm not asking for higher than fair prices, but I hope you'll at least allow the same prices everyone else gets if there is no rolling involved.

Either way, I updated the sheet. I even found something for 'Acceptable encounters'.

I take your meaning--I suppose a more accurate way to describe my feeling on the subject would be that I didn't see a way he'd be compellingly able to negotiate a good deal.

You won't be selling for less than other players, but if a high Charisma character worked a merchant with the appropriate social skill you could expect to see them walk away with a better deal.

To me, intellect factors in not with sealing the deal (especially in street interactions) but in knowing how much the item is worth.  Wisdom and Charisma would seem then to be the two major negotiating skills, Intellect to allow one to know what to even shoot for in the first place.  Of course Intellect helps you know an offer is below what it's worth, but it won't help much (directly) in getting a better price.

Anyway, we'd better move this and all subsequent questions to the OOC thread.

Name: Peren Dovetail
Race: firbolg
Gender: Male
Age: 42

Sexuality (IC): Heterosexual, as far as he knows.
Acceptable Encounters (OOC): Gay is okay, dubcon / coercive is fine; Player open to most things not involving pain, torture, or you know, effluent.

Physical Description: In his natural state, Peren is a massive man, towering just a few inches over eight feet, broad of chest and long of limb. A mop of unruly blonde hair crowns his head and is matched by a scruff of hair along his jaw and chin; though uncommonly seen, he has more of this hair on his elbows and chest. it's not just the size, but also the fact that his skin is a slate-blue, save for a healthy pink undertone to his cheeks and broad, almost bearlike nose. His eyes are a deep, dark green, and seem wise beyond his apparent years. When he uses his innate Disguise Self ability, he prefers to appear as a half-elf of middling height, blonde, fair-skinned, and attractive by most standards. He prefers simple, down-to-earth clothing, rustic weaves and earthy colors.

Personal History: Peren hails from the TĂĽrnweald, a deep forest that abuts a broad mountain range in lands to the north. His tribe lived as their ancestors always had, traveling under the shadowed boughs, gathering what they needed and no more, carefully avoiding the shadow-tainted waygates deeper in the woods. Peren, like any young firbolg, wanted to see more of his people's land, and so tried to find many opportunities to slip away to explore. One such venture led him to a cave in the foothills, where a fire burned; He'd never seen such a thing! Nor had he seen the sort of creature tending the fire. Much like a Firbolg, but tiny, old and wizened. The creature was a human, named Elod Tallarrow, and he said he'd been spending his years keeping the Shadowfell beasts at bay. Time after time, Peren visited the old man, learning from him in secret. The ranger had knowledge of the TĂĽrnweald that even the firbolg tribe did not, and what's more, he knew how to use weapons of steel.

The turning point in Peren's life came in a dark winter's night, when shadows swallowed the moon and a dark wind began howling through the trees. Something had happened, to awaken the dark creatures behind the waygates! In a rush, with no time to explain, Peren urged his people to safety along paths they had never known, the whole time holding hte rear with a few other young warriors of the tribe. He did not think about it at the time, but his family saw the steel dagger he had carried hidden all this time, the strange notes he played on a bark horn... and the arrival of Elod and some of his companions, animal and elf alike. The attack was foiled and, save for a few brave warriors, the firbolg tribe was sage. But Oot-Mak, the tribe's shaman, shook her head sadly; Peren had taken up steel weapons, and brought outsiders to the groves. He had held secrets from his tribe. He was not exiled, per se... but the elders conferred and sent him on a quest, to learn more, to meet allies, and seek the cause of goodness in the world

Demise Preference: Death; maybe corruption, depending on what "corruption" means?

Usually donning a simple dress of white, grey and blue it is her flaming red hair and eyes of icy blue that attracts attention of the crowd from the other side of the room. Other than the dress she has a few costumes for specific performances. A bard can after all never do without enough clothes. For the real adventuring she however has actual tight fitting leather armour, complemented by a rapier on one hip, a dagger on the other and her lute slung over her back. Personal History:
Having spent most of her youth at a bard’s college, Sofia learned all the trades of being a bard afore setting out in the wide world to make her fortune. She travelled from town to town for about a year until first disaster struck. The coastal village she was passing through was attacked by pirates, resulting in Sofia being taken prisoner. This situation only lasted a few weeks until Sofia joined the crew as the main entertainer and eventually enforcer of discipline aboard the ship.

Now having a modest position of power and a source of wealth Sofia thrived among the pirates for a few years until their ship was smashed up in a storm and washed ashore on an uninhabited rock. From the cargo all Sofia managed to rescue was the bare minimum of her previous possessions. It was a boring existence for a few weeks until a ship passed by. Things in this part of the site (recruitment) can't be porn, strictly speaking, but I see nude female breasts here all the time.  Visible genitalia is definitely a no.

If I might offer a suggestion, could DarkDaemon leave out the avatar for now, or PM it to you?  And then just add it into the actual IC posts?

Breasts aren't allowed either, nothing NFSW is. Cleavage is okay though.

I think AndyZ's suggestion would work best. Alternatively, you're allowed to link to the image, but not show the actual image. You still have to put an NFSW tag in along with the link if it's not suited for work though.

Basically ask yourself; is this an image you'd show your mother without having your cheeks turning red? If so, then it's generally fine to post it here. ;)

If I understood correctly, the applicants are kinda endless. Is a West Marches after all. Problem is that party size is 4, so you might not join the already going party, yet you can form a new one with other players, me included.

Aye, Inoshima is correct; Westmarch games are simply party fluid games where players play whenever they can short adventures in single expanding sandbox setting around city which there is no way out from contingent you have to explore to gain XP, treasures and get larger picture of the story in the area.

Blonde hair is normally left to hang and frame or hide her fair face, but is occasionally pulled up and out of the way when vision is more important. She's gotten by in life by people distracted by her body to realize they're being scammed or grifted, and she continues to dress in a provocative manner. Keyhole shirts and short skirts or shorts with thigh high boots tend to be her preference; leather gloves keeping her fingers soft and safe. A pair of daggers form a cross at the small of her back, and a rapier hangs low off one hip, attached to a thick belt.
Personal History: As a child, she was left at the doorsteps of an orphanage that was part of a church to the Goddess of Hearth and Family. The strict rules and religious dogma of the orphanage never fit well with her, and 'Prudence' ran away in her early teens. She survived on the street on her own, using a silver tongue and quick wits to get what she needed to get by. She found plenty of different partners to help her survive over the years, mostly just being dead weight and letting them help her survive, but over the years she learned her own skills through watching them. She eventually ended up working with a group of criminals, helping them find easy marks for burglary and gathering blackmail.

While attempting to gather blackmail from one particular Lord, she found strong evidence that he was a cultist worshiping a Demon Lord. Unfortunately for her, she found too much evidence, and was caught in the process. She ended up having to kill the Lord in the process of escaping, just as the city guard burst in to arrest him. She quickly played it off as if her intent was to deal with the cult leader, and was paraded as a 'brave adventuer' who helped stop the threat. Her criminal contacts were less than happy with that, trying to blackmail her from her new Hero status. She found it easiest just to flee with what wealth she had accumulated, heading to the next town.

When she came upon Hard Harbour, she decided to try the adventuring gig for real. It gave her all the opportunities to explore her indulgences, chase adrenaline, and get accolades instead of running from the guard...

The Rogue is fine, but the Swashbuckler archetype seems only available through Unearthed Aracana, which is disallowed.  If it's coming from elsewhere I apologize for the misunderstanding and if you could cite its source I'd appreciate it.

Swashbuckler is sourced in both Xanathar's Guide and the Sword Coast book. :)

Hmmm, this is an interesting idea, and I'm seeing a definitive lack of front liners. If there's still room to grow I might whip up a paladin or fighter. :)

There is a lack, and you're free to join up--but you can reasonably expect to warm the bench the first Adventure.

Gender:Female
Age:25

Sexuality (IC): Heterosexual
Acceptable Encounters (OOC): Non-con Allowed, F/M Strongly preferred, Open to Torture/Pain
Physical Description:Rarely seen outside of her armour, as is customary for Helm faithful.
Personal History: Ysabel de’Fonte was born into the lap of luxury, being the firstborn of Ottaviano de’Fonte and the heir of all the wealth and power that he had garnered over his many years. Or at least she would of been; House Fonte, being absolutely devoted to the god Helm, many generations ago decided to show their devotion by giving the firstborn of every generation to the service of their lord. The first born of the house patriarch is raised to be a paragon of Helms will; They are forbidden to procreate and must spend all of their days spreading Helm’s influence and defending those can’t defend themselves.

Ysabel spent her entire childhood training to become a warrior of Helm, told time and time again the meaning and importance of her sacrifice, only to spend seven years standing around altars and preventing petty crimes around the outskirts of her father's manor. But she soon longed for this boredom after she learned that her father had been strung up in the streets for debts owed to crime lords, her her family's name had been all but destroyed in the aftermath. Quick to provide damage control her brother, Ferdinand, told that he would stay to find their fathers killer, but she must go far to the south to clear the family name by performing deeds so great her father’s transgressions would be nothing but a footnote.

Unbeknownst to her, Ferdinand, ever vying for power, was the direct cause of her father's death. And hoping to never see her alive again he sent her not to a place where the people needed a saviour, but to place from which she was unlikely to ever return.

how frequently will new adventures be coming along?

That's one of those questions you could ask a DM and they could give you an answer but all it's going to end in is disappointment for all involved tbh.

I will tell you that for at least the beginning I'm considering running two Adventures at once, but still enforcing the 4 character party size limit.  Hoping for a Co-DM to reveal themselves before too soon but we'll see.

There will be a mix of fatalities and the usual burnout by the time both of those run their course in (indeterminate timeframe).

Acceptable Encounters (OOC): Non-con, homosexual always ok. Preference for less human(oid) partners; human < tiefling < dragonborn < satyr < dragon, as an example.

Physical Description: Unassuming and quiet, Spring is easy to overlook. On the shorter side for an elf - a hair over five feet - she tends to ear drab, tattered clothing she's made herself. The fur and pelts are brown, and match her hair and eyes. She smiles kindly; an unusual sight on the island.
Personal History: Spring grew up with a sect of druids that lived somewhere on the island. She didn't know if any of them were her real parents, and if not, how she arrived there. The druids wouldn't answer any personal questions, including about her past or why they were raising her; but they taught the elven child of nature and Nature, and the spirits thereof. She had just begun to grasp the basics of Druidic secrets when they held a great ceremony. Spring can't remember the details, just flashes of chanting, fire, paint, inhumanoid shapes - and a strange, foul drink. Bowl after bowl of it - and she next awoke near Hard Harbour, with a headache, her staff, a murky memory and unending questions. She wants to find the druids that raised her and her parents. Though she's not sure if she wants to rejoin them, punish them or merely ask why.

(Despite growing up somewhere in the island, thanks to the drug, her knowledge is very limited. She has no idea how she got to the town (or how to get back), and snippets of memory she recalls will be represented by her Nature proficiency.)

Most of the mechanics are done; are we using ideals/bonds/flaws? I usually just end up playing out a character, without worrying about those.

There is a new 5e game starting about every other week on average. Right now there are 3 5e related topics on the first page of the group request page. :-)

The biggest problems most games seem to have is to keep going though, a lot of campaigns unfortunately burn out within one - two months. I think that this game will avoid that trap since there is always something new to do and it's not one long campaign but rather a series of short adventurers that you can play with others even if somebody goes inactive. I think that if you have one or two members in your group of four going inactive, that it'd make sense to simply return to the start city and find some others to replace them, after which you can continue with your original adventure.

While I appreciate the effort I cock blocked previous efforts to weave backstory too far into the town, so while your family can certainly have been mages on the island that helped out where they could, none of the villages are under special magical protection.  The only "safe" zone is Hard Harbour, this is woven into the default mechanical assumptions of the game at this point.

Zaer Darkwail

So can Cythieus char background story woven as part of the protection what Hard Harbour enjoys? Magical wards keep most monsters/beasts at bay.

Easy enough, to fix. I'll change it to something else.

Reminder that I could really use co-DMs, your level of authorship/commitment highly negotiable (i.e. complete control of your adventures vs. just asking me to make a complete module for you to run, etc).

Zaer Darkwail

Although it should be carrot enough to get co-GM for having their chars ran by you, but I feel you may get more response to co-GM role (now that it's 8 people and so 2 parties of 4 which is your max to run with anyways) if you offer a carrot (which you can benefit as well). In one 3.5 FR based forum game at Rpol there was rule that if you GM'ed a adventure (run it entirely from beginning to end), you get XP/points collected and you can invest said XP/Points to your chars.

Points can be used to buy like 'treasure/magic items' given to your char which they find during a adventure (decided by fellow GM/co-GM). Or able play restricted class/race or get other perks for your char which do not involve other players (example get noble title and NPC's recognize it).

I'm not unwilling to consider such propositions, but it would need to be very open so people wouldn't feel they'd been cheated--also with such a high danger game I don'thynk it'd be fair to put the items into the adventures, if I give items at all.  More likely gold or xp.

Zaer Darkwail

Gold/XP can be suitable reward, albeit you can in theory get magic items with gold but it needs it's own venture and searching about.

I've given co-DMing the other group a lot of thought, but it'd depend on whether or not my own game continues with the next campaign and some other factors. I wouldn't be able to commit until early February anyway. Getting additional advantages as exp would definitely be nice though. Extra gold is nice too, but I find it hard to come up with stuff to spend gold on after you make about 500 gp - 1000 gp.

Unless of course there'd be a shop that sells magic items in exchange for a lot of gold (like the kind of gold you'd make from 3 - 4 adventures), but I do think it makes more sense to see items drop during the adventures. Alternatively, the party could sort it out among themselves who gets gold and who gets the item if something drops at the end of the adventure. The other party members might be able to save up for an item that way through several adventures. That's just an idea though.

I'm interested in joining up if you're still taking people. Not sure if I'd have the chance to co-DM right now but possibly at some point in the future.

Race: Orc
Gender: Female
Age: Proportionately 20+ to a human's standards

Sexuality (IC): Curious/inexperienced
Acceptable Encounters (OOC): Up for trying anything once, probably.  Except scat/vore/etc.

Physical Description:
Shel stands at a hair over six feet tall and her faced marked with a permanent scowl.  At first glance it'd look like she bore the scars of a lifetime of battle but with a closer look these deep gouges and marks were the crude and ineffective attempts at tattoo removal.  The only tattoo to remain was across her face telling tales of her dishonorable deeds to any orcs that saw it.  Unless attempting a disguise she wore the least amount of clothing possible at any given time.

Personal History: Even from her early years Shel stood out among her village.  A sought after prize to her father's riches and her (racially specific) beauty.  At the head of the line was their War Chief whose advances—nor those of his sons-- were at all subtle.  For any other orcish woman her life would've been ideal, following in the footsteps of their matriarchal deity Luthic.

Shel wanted nothing to do with this traditional lifestyle.  She was constantly defying expectations and drawing weapons and sneaking out on any raids she could.  Coming back from the latest raid shortly after her passage to adulthood she was forced into matrimony to the Chieftan's oldest son.  Shel would have none of this and in his attempts to force himself upon her her dagger found its way through his ribs.

She was met with beatings and torture where she was marked for her transgressions.  Her family was slaughtered and she was released to bear her shame openly for the world to see. Her only hope was attempt to blend in among the seedy underbelly of human society.

Demise Preference: Corruption or imprisonment

For everyone involved I would change age to read something like "20 in human equivalent."  Other than that your character looks good.

Edit made.  That was the one thing I was kind of wary about when doing this just because of Orc's funky aging.  Full grown adult at 12 and dead by 50?  Might as well count it in dog years.

Indeed, but as a mod on this site given the insanely high liability I can imagine taking one look at that and giving the Big Nope.  Within the context of the lore I understand they're a fully mature adult physically/mentally.

Very good, you are approved.  There's a second group forming up that may have just gotten an opening for you to slide into, I'll send you your starting rumour ASAP.

Anytime, we've got a very open door here.  I'm hoping to grow the community such that we're able to accommodate as many parties as we have players for running simultaneously.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with how magic items are handled in 5e compared with earlier, but it's a lot harder to convert gold into magic items and vice-versa in this edition. Characters also tend to be less dependent on magic items, but it's generally expected that most items are going to be found in adventures.
I will have limited access 12/22 through 1/1.
I am myself.

I do know that buying magical items is less simple than it had been, but vaguely recall some tables in the DMG for creating\purchasing enchanted items and the values thereof.  That being said, I am fine with Co-GM's rewards being entirely in gold or eXP with only an indirect potential to help them acquire magic gear.

Just an FYI but Xanathar's guide to everyone has a lot of updates on magical gear, potions, etc.  I don't think most of it directly affects a lot of the characters currently in play, though.  Not that I want to step on anyone's toes nor do I want to ruin the feel of a game.  If it's intentionally low gear that's all cool.

Mostly, I am secure in the knowledge that the game is balanced around no magic items, so I don't feel the need to make them hyperavailable.  There will be some but odds are you'll need to follow up a rumour or pay a prince's ransom
