MARS COLONY

Welcome to Mars.

The year is 2121 (109 years in the future).

IMPORTANT NOTE:

With Atlas dropping out, I am once again taking over recruitment

- Chrystal (GM)

The history of the Manned Mars Missions from 2025 on

In 2025 Japan launched the first of a dozen unmanned Mars Probes, aimed at gathering more data with a view to eventually carrying out a manned mission. However the Japanese space program was inexplicably cancelled in 2031, two years before the scheduled launch of the manned mission.

In 2032, Virgin Corporation (formerly owned by Sir Richard Branson) joined forces with Boeing Corporation, United Airlines, JAL, Amoco, and a consortium of other smaller investors, to create the late Sir Richard's dream, Virgin Galactic. The Boeing 801 space plane became the mainstay of this new privately funded push into the beyond.

In 2035 the first public passenger space flight took place.

In 2037 the USA, Britain, France and Russia contracted with Virgin Galactic to build a new orbital space station in high orbit.

The new station, with a rotating torus to provide gravity, was completed in 2041.

In 2067, the Japanese Government released the data gathered on it's Mars missions, publishing it on the internet.

In 2069 Virgin Galactic declared it's intention to launch a manned mission to Mars by the end of the century.

In 2073 Virgin Galactic went bankrupt, but the Mars Mission was so advanced that the US government stepped in.

In 2075 the US Military launched the first manned mission to the Red Planet.

In 2076 the mission arrived safely.

In 2078, Triple M (For Manned Mars Mission) returned safely to earth.

In 2083 a second mission, this time manned by US civilians under military command, sets out for Mars.

In 2084 3M2 arrived, reporting one fatality en route.

In 2085 3M2 withdrew from Mars, having spent the longest period ever on an alien world.

In 2086 3M2 returned to Earth.

In 2091 3M3, this time manned by an international crew, left for Mars.

In 2092, 3M3 arrived safely on Mars. However two weeks after arrival, they reported several fatalities and a number of injuries, largely due to a ground vehicle being caught out during a sudden dust storm. The Mission was withdrawn the following day.

3M3 returned to earth in 2094.

In 2100, President Van Hurren of the USA declared his intention to establish a permanent scientific base on Mars.

In 2101, MarsCorp was set up, to fund the base's establishment, ensure it's profitability, and fund such resupply as necessary.

Also in 2101, MarsCorp began it's genetic recruiting process, selecting young couples to have the honour of being parents to the first extra-terrestrial colonists.

In 2120, the Mars Colony Mission (MCM) was launched from the Richard Branson Space Station.

And, on August 23rd 2121, the MCM lander touches down on the Hellas Platina.

The previous manned missions have left behind all the equipment they brought with them, including the air-tight habitation domes, ground vehicles, communications equipment, meteorological equipment, electricity generation equipment, water purification equipment, etc. There is also a store of dried food. MCM-1 has brought with it additional habitation modules, food supplies, a hydroponics laboratory, several tonnes of fresh water frozen into blocks of ice, and several tonnes of liquid oxygen.

After unloading it's colonists and cargo, MCM-1 has left Mars Orbit and is on it's way back to Earth.

MCM-2 will leave Earth in a year's time and will arrive in two years. This ship will have further colonists, resupply of certain foodstuffs, and water, and a number of luxury items.

The job of the colonists is to create a liveable environment before they arrive. If it can be self sustaining, so much the better.

The story will start with the first group of colonists setting foot on the planet for the first time. The reason for this should be obvious to anyone who has played at least one group RP here. The journey to Mars is a year long. If we start with them leaving Earth, we'd never get there! However, events on the journey can be alluded to in "flashbacks".

characters

I require the following characters (in no particular order, just the order i thought of them in):

Note, all characters can be male or female and can be of either orientation. No futa or hermaphrodites please.  Also, there can (and probably should) be more than one of each character not in red. Characters in red there can only be one of.

Characters in blue are technical characters. While the player need not have any actual knowledge of the field in question, a working knowledge of howe Google works plus the ability to type convincing technobabble would be useful for them.

Characters in purple are technical characters of which there can be only one (red+blue=purple)

Mission Commander - taken

This character must be a reasonably senior military officer - Rank not lower than Major. Age preferably over 50 and having been on at least one previous Mars mission, although he/she would have been a junior officer back then. However, this is optional if you can give me a good reason why not.

The Mission Commander is a key role. I may end up taking this one myself, and I will only grant it to someone I know is going to stay the course
.

Communications Technician

This character is military. Communications remain firmly in the hands of the Military, who are still providing a fair bit of MarsCorp's funding.

The character must be able to operate close range communications equipment as well as the special (and energy consuming) long range radio that links Mars with Earth. He/she must also be capable of carrying out any repairs on any and all communications equipment.

The Comms tech may well end up doubling as radio DJ, broadcasting an entertainment signal to the colonists.

Doctor

The doctor is of necessity a GP and surgeon. There should be no bacteria or viruses brought with the initial colonists, due to a rigorous sterilization procedure before launch. There is no life on Mars itself, so nothing native that could infect the colonists. But you never know. Broad spectrum antibiotics and antiseptics form the majority of medical supplies, but those two categories are outweighed by far by the pain killers.

The doctor is expected to be mostly treating wounds and injuries caused by accidents, and then hopefully assisting in the births of the first true Martians within the first ten or eleven months.

Security Chief TAKEN

This player is the heavy. While all characters can me male or female at the player's whim, this character needs to meet a certain physical profile. He/she is military, possibly a senior non-com, or a junior officer. He/she is physically fit. He/she is an expert at unarmed combat, and a crack shot with pretty much any weapon going.

He/she will also have been in the military police, and have experience of criminal investigations.

Hydroponics engineer - vacant

The hydroponics lab is vital to the success of the colony. If they can grow sufficient edible plants to be self sufficient, it will ensure the colony's survival. If the hydroponics lab fails, they will be reduced to eating tinned vegetables, of which they have a finite supply.

Hydroponics is also vital for supplying oxygen for the colonists to breath, recycling the colonists waste, and removing the harmful CO2 from the atmosphere.

Growing vegetables on an alien world is also step one towards teraforming that world, and so the success of the hydroponics lab is key to that endeavour too.

Electrical engineer - vacant

This character is obviously responsible for the correct functioning of everything electrical in the colony. This means the lighting, the heating, the air conditioning (which is a lot more important on Mars than it is on Earth). In fact, if any electrical system fails, the lives of those on the colony are threatened.
Mechanical engineer

This character is responsible for maintaining everything mechanical. This includes the air compressors that make the Martian atmosphere thick enough to breath, the plumbing that supplies fresh water and removes waste water, as well as the various ground and air craft that have been designed to work on Mars.

If more than one mechanical engineer is in play, the duties could be spit between colony maintenance and vehicle maintenance.

Nuclear Power Plant technician

This character is responsible for the smooth and safe running of the colony's nuclear fusion reactor.

It need not be stressed how vital this role is. If the plant fails, not only would the colonists all die (power is vital to life) but depending on the nature of the failure, they could all die in a very spectacular and unpleasant fashion!

Psychologyst - Taken

The colony psychologist is there to help the colonists deal with the stress of their every day lives on a hostile alien world. As such, the psychologist character needs to meet a certain profile him/herself.

He/she must be very stable, totally calm, especially in a crisis. He/she will have a psych profile on every one of the other colonists, and must therefore be able to maintain confidentiality even in the face of direct orders from the colony commander.

Animal geneticist/husbander

The eating of meat may be distasteful to some and may be against some people's religion, but it has been proved beyond doubt that the human metabolism requires protein to survive. Vegetable proteins are fine but animal proteins are actually better.

Animal embryos have been transported to Mars and the geneticist/husbander is responsible for selecting which to rear when. He/she is also responsible for their welfare.

Meteorologist

Mars has a thin dry atmosphere, but wind speeds can exceed 320Kph (200mph). Martian dust storms have been observed that last for days or even weeks. The air is so thin that a 320kph storm would feel like a moderate wind on earth, there is little danger of structural damage from the wind itself. But the dust storms can be lethal, the dust being so fine that it can clog filters, cake wind-shields and reduce visibility to zero.

Predicting these storms and giving adequate warning is thus vital to the colony's success.

Deputy Mission Commander - taken

The deputy Mission Commander is the representative of MarsCorp. He/she is 100% company, and is there to ensure that the colony is actually worthwhile and profitable. If it is not the Deputy Commander's job will be to let his/her bosses back on earth know so that they can close it down and cut their losses. The deputy commander is also empowered to take over in the event the commander becomes incapacitated.

The Deputy Commander must therefore fit into a certain profile. He/She must be a company man/woman through and through. He/she must have a certain ruthlessness in dealing with anything that is not going to turn a profit for the company. She represents the company's interests to the colony. But she is also the representative of the Colony's interests to the company.

Sanitation engineer

This may sound like a posh term for a cleaner, but in fact it is so much more. The sanitation engineers have a job that is probably the least desirable, but the most vital on a colony that is dependent for survival on recycling.

Their job includes making sure that nothing is wasted, that everything that can be recycled is recycled, and that the recycling plants work smoothly. This includes the water recycling plant.

The job is not technical by any means. Any breakdown in any of the recycling plants requires a call to the engineering department. The Sanitation Engineer simply feeds and monitors the plants, changes filters, and keeps things flowing smoothly.
Research scientist - vacant

The scientific community is there in force and probably represent the bulk of the civilian contingent.

They are there to study and to learn. Every discipline of science will be represented, from those studying the plants and animals being raised for food, to those studying the weather, to those studying the Martian night sky, to those looking for ways to exploit Mars' mineral deposits, to those studying the planet's history.

Anything and everything scientific could, indeed should be represented.

Security guard - vacant

"Guards? What from? Aliens?" Was the complaint when the Military announced they were sending a contingent of armed troops with the colonists. Of course the answer was, "No, from human nature".

The guards are all military, mostly low ranks (how low depends on the rank of the security chief). They are all armed, although they don't expect to have to use their firearms. They also have pepper-sprays and night sticks.

They are effectively the Martian police force.
Nurse - vacant

The nursing staff would probably be small, and be there to assist the doctor(s) in everything from scheduling patient appointments to assisting in surgery.
Dentist - vacant

Of course the colony needs a dentist. Teeth are "God's greatest mistake", and need constant attention.

The only real solution is to have all your teeth pulled and replaced with gold caps. No-one likes a dentist, especially after "Little Shop of Horrors", but they are sadly a necessary evil!

Dietician - vacant

Not the most vital role admittedly, but someone needs to ensure that the colonists eat healthily and get a good balance of vitamins and minerals, especially during the early days of the colony when there is no fresh food available.
Quartermaster - Taken

The quartermaster is responsible for the stores. Keeping track of vital stocks of food and equipment, ensuring that everyone gets a fair share. You might say he/she's a glorified shopkeeper or accountant, but without him/her, the colony would run out of vital supplies long before becoming self sufficient.
Chief Engineer - Taken

The chief engineer is in charge of the maintenance of the colony. He/she is the one with whom the buck stops if something cannot be fixed. The chief engineer is the one the other engineers call if they can't fix something. He therefore is an expert in all fields of engineering.
Head Scientist - taken

The head scientist is the elected head of the science department. He/she can be of any discipline of science but he/she must be either older than the rest or possibly hold a number of Nobel Prizes. At the very least he/she must be a well respected member of the scientific community, and have published ground-breaking research in the past.
Cook/chef

At least at first, all meals will be communal, taken in a dining hall. The catering department must be versatile, able to produce a varied menu from limited resources. It doesn't need to be cordon-blue, but it needs to satisfy the nutritionist and the fussy eater!
Butcher - vacant

This character is not what most of us think of when we hear the word "butcher". He/she is not a man/woman in a striped apron with a fancy white panama hat selling pre-packaged cuts of meat.

Rather, he/she is what a butcher used to be, and where the use of the word to describe a mass murderer comes from. He/she is the slaughter-man. He/she is the one who kills the animals, skins them, cleans them, cuts them up, cures the meat if required and passes it on to the cooks. He/she will probably not have much to do at first, until the first animals mature
Miller-baker

Just as the butcher is not just a shop keeper, so the baker is not just a cook. He/she is also the miller. The grain grown in the hydroponics lab won't turn itself into flour, after all. The mill is electric and uses tungsten-carbide grinders instead of granite, but the basic principal of producing flour to make dough to bake into bread is the same.

Initially, the baker will use the supplies of flour brought on the colony ship.
Resource Extraction Engineer - vacant

This job involves strip-mining the Martian iron-ore fields, using equipment transported from Earth on the colony ship. This ore is then smelted, refined and processed into ingots to be shipped back to Earth. The mining vehicles do pretty much all the work in this. Some knowledge of metals and metal working would be useful for this character, but are not essential.
If anyone has any other ideas for characters, either suggest them to me (here or by PM), or just go ahead and create the character. If I don't like it I will let you know by PM.

MARS

Mars itself is a harsh and hostile world. The atmosphere is thin, about one hundredth that of Earth's surface at the bottom of the Hellas Platina (where the colony is) and composed of CO2, the gravity is low, about one third that of Earth, the planet is half as far again from the sun as Earth, and the day-time temperature never exceeds 0°c. At night, in the winter, it can drop to -85°c. It is clearly not an environment in which human beings can survive unaided. Venturing outside requires the use of a pressure suit. It would be possible for a human being to survive for a few seconds, say in an emergency transfer from one life-support zone to another, but after that anoxia would quickly set in. It is debatable whether the victim's blood would freeze (due to the temperature) or boil (due to the pressure).

The reason for establishing the colony at the lowest point on the planet's surface is to maximise the chance of survival in the event of a pressure drop!

Technology

There have been major advances in medical science, but that's about it. Transport technology is now mostly electric, with the electricity either solar or nuclear. Communications have moved on only to keep pace with the advances in biotechnology. It is now commonplace for an individual to have a computer chip in their head that allows them to perform all the functions that we currently use a smart-phone and/or a PC for.

Limb regrowth has become possible, as has cryogenics - the colonists would all have been in stasis for the bulk of the journey. The common cold has not been cured as such, and nor has the flu, but the bacterium and virus that cause them have been isolated and the ability to sterilise them for a limited time in an isolated environment has been developed.

Artificial insemination is now quite commonplace, and techniques have been developed whereby same sex couples of both genders can have a baby that is theirs, by taking genetic material from one partner and placing it in either sperm or an ovum (depending on the gender of the couple), then using in vitro fertilisation. It has also become acceptable for gay men to carry their own children to term in a specially constructed "womb" within the belly. Birth is always via caesarean section in these cases.

Weapons technology has also advanced, but again only to keep up with biotechnology. A military grade cranial implant can control, target and fire a weapon all by itself so long as the user has the correct interface chip in his/her palm. Gauss weapons are becoming commonplace, (using an electric field to accelerate a metal projectile) but traditional cordite bullets are still common on earth.

Lasers are NOT viable weapons, unless your only intention is to blind your opponent. A laser powerful enough to actually shoot a beam capable of killing someone with a single shot needs a mains electricity supply. As the Ghostbusters were fictional, it is unlikely that you would see a soldier carrying a nuclear reactor on his back! Plus, to defend against a laser beam all you need is a shiny surface! This reflects the beam of light straight back at the person firing it!

A couple of things:

The RP will go in light human.

This is a sandbox RP. Players are expected to make their own stories. I have a few random events that I will throw in the mix, but on the whole, you will need to work at it if you want to get anything out of it!

Here you go, Chrystal ... I'll flesh it out some more when I get some time, but I wanted to declare my interest in the RP. :) My character's essentially a female version of Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock ...

player: Zillah

Name: Dr. Madison Chance
Nationality: United States
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Age: 34

Job: Psychologist
Specific skills: Double Ph.D in neuroscience and human psychology

Height: 170 cm
Weight: 57 kg

Eye Colour: Blue
Hair colour: Brown

Distinguishing marks: None

Likes: A good mystery to solve.
Dislikes: Joking around and frivolous activities. Madison considers them unhealthy distractions to her work, usually. (She does engage in certain things people would consider frivolous, but there's always method to her madness - there's a precise reason for everything she does, even if it doesn't make obvious sense to anyone else.)

Psych profile/personality: Madison is calm, dispassionate, and analytical. Her nickname at John Hopkins University was "the Android", because of her calculating nature. To Madison, life is a series of mysteries, waiting to be solved - it's not that she doesn't care about her patients, it's that she thinks emotion gets in the way of logic and facts, and the best way of helping people tends to involve being distant and unemotional.

History: Graduating with a double doctorate at the age of sixteen, Madison was a child prodigy. She worked first at Harvard, but found quickly she didn't have the patience or interest for teaching. The past several years, she's worked as a criminal profiler for the FBI. The Mats Project came to her attention as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that she was eager to be part of.

Blinkin

I sent in my offering as Security Chief last night. Hopefully, it'll be interesting if I get accepted.

I'm real interested in some hard sci-fi. This aught to be great fun. Going to decide what I play tonight. Might post a few characters and pick a few favourites. Blinkin, you don't mind some competition for Security Chief do you?

Blinkin

If you want to compete for a position in the game, by all means, make the bid.

My own is likely iffy as I cannot produce an image to go with the bio, so only time will tell.

What other positions are you trying to pick up? It seems like you want to play multiples and it might be helpful to know what might be left over to pick from.

Hmm, well, i wanted to make a military 2 IC but it appears he needs to be civilian, so i might nab that aswell, maybe a scientist or meterologist, i dont want too many command positions, they're the ones jumping out atm.

Like I said, I might not play everyone I make, so take any u want, if we both want a single position role we can have a chat, or Chrystal can decide. ;D

GloomCookie

player: linna

Name: Dr. Julia Stanton, PhD
Nationality: Great Britain
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual

Job: Chief Engineer
Specific skills: Masters in Electrical Engineering, Doctorate in Nuclear Engineering, minor in Mechanical Engineering (Machine Fabrication)

Height: 173cm
Weight: 70kg

Distinguishing marks: Tattoo of a rose along her right side and lower back that covers most of her side.

Likes: Laughing, having fun, sending messages back to her nieces and nephews, reading books, watching movies.
Dislikes: Untidy work environments, people who can't pull their own weight.

Psych profile/personality: Very outgoing and expressive, she prefers to work with people who aren't afraid to laugh and joke while they're working, but know when it's time to knuckle down and get some serious work done.  She prefers things neat and orderly, but isn't afraid to get her hands dirty.

History: As a young college student, Julia was in the Navy, using it as a source of funding after scholarships and grants failed to secure her a future.  She worked hard and used her degree in electrical engineering to become an officer aboard a nuclear submarine, where she worked while getting her masters.  After getting her masters, she left the Navy and went to work for Gillian & Turner, an engineering firm consulting for Mars Corp.  It was there that she got her PhD in nuclear engineering while helping to design the major systems for the base that would eventually become her workplace.  With a PhD and an inside knowledge of how the base was designed and constructed, she was chosen to become the base's chief engineer.

Other info: Possesses a pendent with a glass vial and a sample of Martian soil brought back from from early probes.

I'm not 100% sure what I want to do with this one quite yet in terms of job role, so I put down the possible roles for him. Going to PM you Chrystal and we can talk it out once your back.

Player: Atlas

Name: Squadron Leader. Jack Monroe
Nationality: United Kingdom
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Sexuality: Straight

Job: Quatermaster & Pilot
Specific skills: Military Officer. Judo. Pilot. Firearm trained.

Height: 180cm. (5ft11")
Weight: 92kg (14st 7Ibs)

Eye Colour: Blue
Hair colour: Dark Brown

Distinguishing marks: hawk tattoo on his right wrist, along with his wing number. Raven wings across his back. Considerable scar tissue on left arm.

Likes: Old music. Order. Old fashioned manners. A good book. Travel & Adventure seeking. Going fast (the adrenaline rush).
Dislikes: Rudeness. Mistreatment of people, particularly women.

Psych profile/personality: At first glance appears straight laced, but able to relax into friendship groups well over time. Fastidiously ordered. He has a rigid moral compass based around helping those in need. Introverted, he appears quiet and cautious around new groups, but soon settled well within the team during his trial period, preferring a smaller group of close knit friends.

History: Jack was raised in a middle class home in the southern counties of England. He was the youngest of three sons, his father a priest and his mother a famous artist, who provided for most of the families income. He spent a large portion of his youth travelling with his father to remote African regions on missionary trips. He returned to the UK as a teenager and once he left college at 18 he signed up to RAF as combat pilot, graduating just as a war broke out in the Gulf region. Jack flew a high-atmopshere fighter jet, designed in the upper atmosphere, on the edge of space. During combat assisting the United Democratic Arab League he became a fighter ace, and received a Conspicuous Gallantry Cross during combat, where he took a serious shrapnel wound to his left arm.

During his time of recovery he was made camp Adjutant, not wishing to stay in the hospital. The war ended before he was ready to fly again, and he was given a command role, replacing a fallen comrade, being bumped up to squadron leader. He spent two years running the defense squadron before the chance to apply for the MarsCorp mission arose. He jumped at the possibility, his obsession with exploration kindled during his youth led him to join. He applied for a number of military officer roles aboard the mission, with backing by the Ministry of Defense. He is representing British military interests aboard the heavily american influenced mission; although his person reason for going is the adventure, rather than anything nationalistic.

Other info: Representing British military interests on Mars.

Player: Atlas

Name: Micah Armstrong
Nationality: United States of America
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Sexuality: Straight

Job: Meteorologist & Geologist
Specific skills: Phd in Geology. Bsc in Meteorology

Height: 176cm (5ft 10")
Weight: 90kg (14st 2Ibs)

Eye Colour: Dark Brown
Hair colour: Black (Grade one cut)

Distinguishing marks: "Touch the Heavens" Tattoo on his bicep.

Likes: Music. Politics. Science and Discovery. Rocks.
Dislikes: Authoritarian control over his work.

Psych profile/personality: A gifted and curious scientist. An extroverted personality, melding quickly with the group he is put in. Was found to become abrasive with the military personnel in the test environment, was deemed non threatening to the mission.

History: Born originally in the south, Micah studied Geology at MIT graduating with a first where he was snapped up by MarsCorp to study the surface of Mars for long term terraforming activities. During his time at MarsCorp he was also cross trained as a Meteorologist to assist in the protection of the crew on the planet. His years of study were focussed primarily on the Martian weather patterns, differing considerably from those found on earth. He was selected as a prime candidate to take part in the Mars mission.

player: blakel

Name: Professor Dr. Alon Gadi
Nationality: Israeli
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Age: 35

Job: Head Scientist
Specific skills: Doctorate in particle quantum field theory physics and Physics Nobel Laureate

Height: 179 cm.
Weight: 71 kg

Eye Colour: Green
Hair colour: Brown

Distinguishing marks: Tattoo of the quote "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." on his inner right forarm.

Likes: A good problem, hardworking coworkers, parties, music,
Dislikes: Being interrupted while working on a problem,  slacking coworkers, unsupported claims,

Psych profile/personality: When not focusing on his work, Alon is generally an easygoing and sociable person. However, while working on a problem he prefers to be left alone and undisturbed, in order to concentrate. He is skeptical of most ideas, requiring a meticulous proof of most things in order to accept them. Alon has high demands of both the people that he works with and of himself. At times his ego can be somewhat large, much to others' discontent.

History: After completing his doctorate, Alon was immediately granted a professorship at Princeton, where he published groundbreaking work in quantum field theory, astrophysics, plasma physics, and chaos theory, becoming regarded as among the top scientists of all time. After winning his Nobel Prize at the age of 30, he created and headed interdisciplinary scientific projects in the university, which MarsCorp had eventually absorbed and turned into their research division. Because of his stature as a physicist, as well as his history dealing in a vast range of sciences, MarsCorp contacted Alon as to being the head scientist for the first colonization mission, in order to oversee all research and to assist with any engineering as needed. In return, MarsCorp granted funds to his own research, currently about black hole radiation.

blakel

Just as a suggestion, we should have a job like miner/resource extractor. The point of MarsCorp is to turn up a profit right? As far as the profession list goes, the entire colony is just geared towards the sustainability of the colony. Shouldn't there be something that MarsCorp is profiting from?

This seems like it's going to be an awesome game.

Chrystal

Okay, wow!

Pretty good reaction for a week's worth of holiday. *blush*

Oh, I'm back, by the way. Had a great time with my wife, it rained every day for the entire week, but if you go camping in the UK then that's what you expect! lol!

Starting from the top:

@Zillah: *BIG HUGS* Hi sweetie. Character is definitely approved.

@Blinkin: As mentioned by PM, if you can give me a written description I will hunt up a pic for you. Character is approved regardless.

@DarkRose15: Have a think about what interests you (besides Elliquiy), and make a character that utilises some of those interests. Please note, it doesn't have to be one of those listed.

@Lina: Very nice character. Approved.

@Atlas: Your meteorologist is definitely approved. As for the military guy, there is a dichotomy between the roles you have put him forward for and his experience. However, I do believe I mentioned that there is at least one aircraft on the colony. Not a fighter jet by any means, but flying in the Martian atmosphere will take a great deal of skill. Will discuss further by PM.

@Blakel: Very nice character. Approved.

And yes, we should. Damn. I honestly thought I'd put something in there. Ah, I know what happened. Originally I had Metallurgist as a separate science discipline listed, but it got encompassed into the general "Scientific research" heading. My original idea was to have the metallurgists do the initial "mining" of the iron ore. But no, you are quite right, we should have a couple of Resource Extraction Engineers, together with the equipment they need.

Thank you.

@Everyone & Anyone else.

Character limit is two per player so far. If I am given a good enough reason to change that I will.

I am but one person with one brain, and I was typing the opener up in a hurry before going to bed on the night before a week long camping trip... So please, if you spot anything I've missed, or if there are glaring errors or inconsistencies, please point them out to me.

Equally, if you think of a character role that I've not mentioned, submit the character anyway, or at the very least mention it to me.

I have a bit of editing to do now, and a Mission Commander to come up with.

I just happened to glance at the Doctor tab and noticed you had it listed "The first true martians in 10 to 11 months."  Wow, expecting us to be busy, do ye?  Anyway, gonna make a second chara just to round out the crew a bit.

player: Linna

Name: Nora Lancet
Nationality: Canadian
Gender: F
Sexuality: Lesbian

Job: Sanitation Engineer, Cook, Miller, Butcher
Specific skills: Associate Degree in Culinary Arts, Associate Degree in Sanitation Administration, spent 6 years working for the City of Toronto Department of Sanitation (Both degrees earned while working), spent 4 years working for Cafe Cecilion as chef, spent 5 years as head chef.

Height: 165cm
Weight: 74kg

Eye Colour: Green
Hair colour: Brown

Distinguishing marks: N/A

Likes: Cooking and Cleaning, Talking to people, working hard
Dislikes: Ungrateful people, people who think they're too good to talk to her.

Psych profile/personality: Very much a hard worker, refers to remain busy rather than just standing around and talking.  Likes to be friendly but can hold a grudge if someone seems to slight her, though easily forgives.

History: Initially, Nora had zero prospects for ever going to Mars.  Her parents were high school sweethearts, she only worked as a sanitation worker out of Toronto before joining Cafe Cecilion, and she never figured herself the astronaut type.  However, it so happened that one of the head mission controllers was in Toronto when he stopped at Cafe Cecilion.  One of the waitresses spilled a drink on him, and Nora personally came out and apologized, offering to make their meals on the house.  The meal so impressed him and his coworkers, that her name was placed in the running as one of the mission's culinary officers.  When her background in sanitation came up, she was able to apply for that as well, taking on the responsibilities of maintaining the Mars mission's sanitation and food.

Other info: Likes to sing in the shower and is often heard whistling while she works.

*giggles* Of course...

Oh and I'm working on the rather obvious issue regarding that, where those characters that swing the other way are concerned...

Basically, artificial insemination, with frozen semen brought from Earth. (Thawed out first, obviously, unless you want to get kinky...)

Thank you SO much for making a "bottom-line" character. They are so often overlooked, but they are absolutely essential to the running of things. *hugs*

player: elfguy

Name: Lieutenant Ashley Thomson
Nationality: US
Gender: F
Sexuality: bi
Age: 21

Job: Communication technician
Specific skills: Completed the Military training for becoming a Communication Technician, along with regular Officer training.

Height: 162
Weight: 77

Eye Colour: Green
Hair colour: Brown

Distinguishing marks: None

Likes: Electronics, computers, hacking, small arms
Dislikes: Being bullied, unfriendly people

Psych profile/personality: Ashley is definitively a geek which means she can be a bit awkward in social encounters, but tries her best to come up as a friendly girl. She likes to make new friends and is usually pretty open to chatting, although she does take her job seriously which always comes first.

History: Ashley joined the military to complete Officer Training course, to become a Lieutenant and specialize as a Communications Technician. She always liked to play with ham radio, CB and other type of communication equipment as a kid, along with computer systems, so it made sense for her to go in this field. She came out first of her class, and was assigned at a NORAD outpost, where she was instrumental in helping decode some important military communications for the Mars mission. Once the military needed to send one specialist to Mars, she was picked for this position because of her skills and experience. She's still fairly new and can get nervous about meeting expectation, but she is hard working and plans to fulfill the mission.

Other info: While she is a technician and not an infantry soldier, she learned small arms and hand to hand combat as part of her military training, and also likes to do daily gym visits to keep a fit body.

player: Blinkin

Name: Lt (JG)Laura Alicia Hicks (US Navy SEALS)
Nationality: United States
Age: 31
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual

Job: Security Chief
Specific skills:
Bachelors; Criminal Justice
Associates; Forensics/Crime Scene Analysis
Hand-to-hand combat
Small Arms training,
Heavy Weapons Training,
Covert Operations
Ground Vehicle Pilot
Demolitions
Surveillance
Communications
Small unit tactics,
Information Gathering,
Investigation

Physical Description:

Laura is best described as a strikingly  attractive woman with a close cropped cap of curly raven hair that frames a tanned, heart-shaped face with dark gray eyes under straight brows, a slightly upturned nose and a mouth with full, sensual lips that curl up slightly at the corners as if she knew something you didn’t… or was simply mischievous. A slender neck flows into an athletic body with generous C-cup breast, a trim waist and flat belly before flowing out into rounded hips and a tight, rounded rear. Long, lean and shapely legs finishes out the form. Her hands are slender, but strong from a career of rough treatment and rugged work.

Height: 170 cm (5’7)
Weight: 56.8 kg (125 lbs)

Eye Color: Storm cloud Gray
Hair color: Raven Black, worn in a short, curly cap

Distinguishing marks: Tattoo of a seal with a devilish grin on right bicep, bullet scar on lower abdomen, right side, thin scar on left forearm, diamond shaped birthmark on right but cheek.

Likes: Hiking, racquetball, competitive target shooting, camping, swimming, reading trashy romance novels, flirting, mountain climbing, poker, chess, men and a good meal.
Dislikes: disorder, sloppiness, arrogance, idleness, political games and bad alcohol.

Psych profile/personality: Laura Hicks is, by her nature and training a self motivated alpha personality who thinks of herself as competent, disciplined and adaptive. She’s goal oriented and dedicated to doing the job right at nearly any cost. Principled and unorthodox in thinking, she knows when to follow orders and when to toss them out and go with her gut.

When she’s not balls to the walls and on duty, she has a distinctively different attitude that could border on the extreme in taste, acctivities and interest. She can easily range from solitary and wanting to be left alone to gregarious and flirty. Most of the time, she is middle of the road and enjoys social environments and people in equal parts. While she keeps a certain distance between herself and underlings, she is also well known to be as loyal to her people as they are to her and taking the heat for their actions. The only way, in her mind, to get respect from her people is to give it and is fiercely loyal to friends and team mates alike.

Her only serious flaws may be the same loyalty she gives her peers that has caused her no small trouble with the brass and a refusal to give up on a mission until it’s done and done well.

History:

Laura Hicks started her military career in the US Navy as a member of the military police, or shore patrol, where she learned the basics of investigation and Military Justice. After 4 years of active duty, Laura applied and pulled every string she could manage to be admitted to the US Navy SEAL school; one of the rare women to apply, much less complete the hellish course before being assigned to active duty in SEAL team 2 and a series of missions so covert that years later, only she knows for sure what happened and she’s not talking to even the shrink about them.

At age 25, Laura attended OCS and graduated as an Ensign; immediately assigned to lead a SEAL platoon for 6 months before being promoted to LT (JG). That was when she applied for the upcoming Mars Mission as Chief of Security.

Over the next several years, Laura attended the University of Maryland, where she majored in Criminal Justice with a minor in Forensics, Mission specific skills and advanced training in the equipment that would be used during the stay on Mars.

Being Literate is the ability to read and understand a language. When you ask for literate, what you are looking for is Verbosity, which is the ability to use lots of words without actually saying very much... like politicians. I consider myself both literate and verbose.

Blinkin

Out of curosity, what branch is Ashley? There might be just a little friction between the branches which could be a little fun. Nothing serious, but you know how Marines feel about army and so on. ;)

Looks to me like Ashley is Army...

I'm inferring from that negative that she is a soldier?

Uhm well I didn't actually think of military branch. I simply meant that she isn't an infantry type that goes out fighting, she is a techy. But she still has full training with small weapons and hand to hand combat.

Blinkin

I've always inferred "infintry" to be either Army or Marines, the addage that "All Marines are riflemen" thing pretty much ends up being an infantry thing.

It's not a big deal. As I said, it was just curiosity. It's sort of like the whole fighter pilot thing. 4 out of the 5 branches of US Military (Including Coast Guard) have fighter pilots but Air Farce and Navy tend to be the most grouchy about it. :)

Elfguy, it would be good if you could just add whether she is in the army, navy, air force, marines, army air corps, artillery..., please?

Actually, may I make a suggestion? To get on the Mars mission as comm-tech, would require pretty high clearance, so I would suggest maybe she's army and has served at the Pentagon, or possibly Air force and served at NORAD?

Thanks.

Roughly how many people do you want in this roleplay before we begin? I realize that it's going to be a pretty large game, I'm just wondering.

As many as I can get... I am all too aware that half those who express an interest will never post anything or will post once and never again. The way I see it, the more players there are the better chance the game has of lasting more than two weeks.
