desert ashes

For the first time in fifty years since the grand de Chantal Theater  has opened its doors, living down the rumors of deadly scandal and deceit, a new set of investors has come calling to budding thespians.  Had the city forgotten how death and plague had once claimed the lives of those on the stage?  Perhaps the new generation of thespians and investors would not remember -- or perhaps it would simply do to liven up the marketing.  Who could resist the temptations of a potentially haunted theater?  All seemed to be going well for the owners of de Chantal Theater as they opened their doors and posted the first casting call -- suitably, of course, for Romeo and Juliet.

Yet, as the auditions unraveled and directors went behind closed doors, it seemed all was not well for the budding cast and crew of the theater.  Death was once more entering from stage left, his glinting scythe in hand and summoned at the call of the Understudies who felt nothing more than the lingering blood and star lust.  Who ever remembered the Understudies?  Primary roles were a rare chance ... unless, of course, their competition happened to exit stage left as nothing more than a ghost of what they arrived in.

The final auditions have come to an end and while the investors and executive producers have been tucked away making their casting decisions, the ghosts of the de Chantal Theater are rattling their chains as the deathly cry for spotlight is becoming heard once again ...

Cast and Crew
Aiden — Thespian/Mercutio, Killed, Act 1 (Night)
Goober — Understudy/Montague, Lynched, Act 2 (Day)
Imogen — Stage Manager/Capulet, Killed, Act 3 (Night)
Izu
Kyrsa — Director/Tybalt, Lynched, Act 3 (Day)
Marguerite
Remiel
Rolin — Thespian/Benvolio, Killed, Act 4 (Night)
thirteenhearts — Understudy/Lady Capulet, Lynched, Act 1 (Day)
Valerian
Xandi — Thespain/Prince Escalus, Lynched, Act 4 (Day)

Thespians (Innocents) (6): The main core of the Cast and Crew, they are under siege from the Understudies (Thespians gone wrong) who are determined to eliminate their competition and secure their starring roles.  As a whole the Thespians must work together to discover and eliminate the Understudies before it's too late.

Understudies (Villains) (3): A minority group of the Thespians, they are working in secret to bring down the Thespians.  Only the Understudies know who each other is and they must work together with their plots and schemes if they mean to win the spotlight.

Director (Guardian) (1): Among the Thespian lurks the Director.  Once a night the Director chooses someone to protect from the Understudies.  If they choose correctly, the Understudies' target is saved for that evening.  The Director may also elect to save themselves, but may only do so once.   They can only target the same person twice in a row before needing to elect to save someone else.

Stage Manager (Seer) (1): Once a night the Stage Manager can target someone to learn of their true identity.  It is their responsibility to attempt to help the Thespians and sway the opinions with the truths that they glean.  However, they may not want to reveal their own true position, for a known Stage Manager could easily equate to a dead Stage Manager.

Producer (Judge): The Producer is elected at the beginning of the game by all the players.  Their function is to be the deciding factor should lynch voting come to a tie.

Remiel

Remiel made sure to wear his tightest tights as he stretched before rehearsal.  After all, he must give the people what they want!

"I think that Kyrsa will make a fine producer," he said.  "Besides, I hear she's stacked."

La La La La La La Laaaaa....

*ahem*

La La La La La La Laaaaa....

Thirteen takes a sip of her warm honey-lemon tea as she prepares her voice in the back corner of the stage.  She glances over at some dude contorting himself into weird shapes with what appears to be an obvious sock in his tights.  I hope Valerian is our producer for this show, she always has lovely ideas.  Thirteen thinks to herself before getting back to work.

*ahem*

La La La La La La Laaaaa....

Aiden

Aiden arrives with his bag strapped to a shoulder, dropping it just off stage as she strips down and begins to change.
"What are we voting for? Producer....hmmm how about you Remiel...it is obvious I'm going to me Romeo...I just hope Xandi or 13 gets Juliet...so we can spend plenty of time practicing!"
He grins and continues to change.

Autumn52

Xandi enter stage left looking at all the beautiful women hoping she has a shot a the role of Juliet knowing that one of the guys who will play Romeo will definitely steal her heart.....(well at least for the length of the show)

She begins to go over lines and is interupted briefly by her vote for Producer......umm I think Valerian would be wonderful.

Continuing going over lines she smiles at the handsome Adien and ask him if he will run lines with her. Smiling her sweetest smile.......

Valerian

Val blushed at having two votes already, pleased but also a little embarrassed.  When she wasn't on stage, lost in whatever part she was playing, she was actually quite shy.  "I think Kyrsa would be a good producer.  She always has good ideas."  Then she settled down to look over her lines one last time, anxiously awaiting the start of the auditions.

Imogen

Imogen sauntered into the theatre and made her way down past the rows of seats towards the stage. She hopped on up and grinned, wiping her hands on her pants. "Nice to meet you all, I'll be your Mercutio for this round. Or so I hope. I know, I know...it's a male part, but hey, it's Shakespeare! Who is going to notice if a girl looks like a guy or vice versa?

"Oh! We don't have a producer yet? Darn!" She let her gaze rove over the gathered players and bounced back on the balls of her feet. "I know! Xandi is really good at organizing stuff! Ideas are all nice 'n fine, but if you don't get em done, it's just gathering dust, you know? No, I'll stick with Xandi for now, but hey, if you guys have other plans... It's all cool."

Goober

#8
Goober walks into the theater with a whistle. He looks at the rest of the actors and actresses, "Wow, this is some place isn't it? Nice to meet you all, can't wait for the rehearsals and working together!"

"What's that? We need to elect a producer among us?" Goober took a look at the list of all the cast and crew members, closed his eyes, and put his finger up to a name...Opening his eyes, he realized his finger rested upon Marguerite's. "Oh well, guess it's as good a choice as any." Goober scanned the crowd already gathered. "Besides, it seems she has yet to arrive. I wonder what type of person she'll be." Of the people already here, Goober could already spot a multitude of personalities and talents. "This is going to be awesome!"

Marguerite

Stepping into the theater, Marguerite whistled at the place and nodded. "I bet Valerian would be a great producer and know how to get the right roles for everyone."

Aiden

The sweet smile is met with a sly smirk across his lips, nodding his head before his eyes lock on to hers. With no script in hand he clears his throat and begins.
"If I profane with my unworthiest hand this holy shrine, the gentle sin is this. My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss. "
His hand takes hers and lifts slowly towards his lips.

risingdemon

Lune sneaks in behind one of the curtains and watches as they converse about the room, quietly observing. Her wide blue eyes sparked, looking at the stage and thought: Will Kyrsa be the producer? I hope so...

She then bounced off to change into her tryouts outfit and show how amazing she was, for all the world to see...

Kye

Kyrsa smiled graciously and shook her head slightly when she realized that a number of her fellow performers had voted for her to be the producer.  "I am very flattered that you believe I would be a good producer.  If that is the will of the majority I would accept it gladly.  However I believe that Xandi would make a better producer than I."

Thirteen was continuing to warm up her voice as the other actors started to gather on the stage.  She looked around seeing a couple running lines together, others were reading scripts; when out of the corner of her eye she saw the man in obscenely tight tights again.  He was still doing various stretches that appeared quite uncomfortable.  "Oh. My. God. He has a rip in the crotch of his tights."  Thirteen turned away in horror.

Xandi's eyes sparkled as she became the beautiful Juliet and Aiden the handsome Romeo....(Xandi hoped she would earn the role of Juliet and that Aiden would get to be Romeo)

As he cleared his throat and spoke his lines she smiled as he kissed her hand and began.......

"Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much, Which mannerly devotion shows in this; For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch, And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss."

She smiled her most sweet smile, as Juliet would do to her handsome Romeo.

Xandi was lost in Romeo's eyes as she heard her name mentioned and blushed as she had been voted for Producer...She thought to herself 'how sweet it is that my fellow actresses place so much confidence in me' and all she said was, "If it is the will of my fellow Thespians that I should be the producer, I shall endeavor to be worthy of such a role."

Looking back to her Romeo and smiling again.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

Imogen

To the left of the stage Imogen was practising her lines. Or rather, the lines she hoped to be speaking on stage. Tapping the fake sword on her side, she gave an imaginary friend standing beside her an exasperated look. "O calm, dishonourable, vile submission!" The next line had something to do with stoccata and she consults her text book before straightening, and drawing her imposing wooden blade.

"Tybalt, you rat-catcher, will you walk?" She demanded, her sword ready.

Goober

Goober dashed into the prop room, rummaging till he found a blunt rapier. Grabbing another one, he headed off towards Imogen who was standing off to the side, practicing what could only be the part of Mercutio. Grinning, he walked up towards Imogen. "Looking not to shabby! I'm Goober, by the way, but you can call me Jay. Nice to meet you. Here, catch, I think metal suits the setting a bit better than wood, wouldn't you?" Goober threw the extra rapier towards Imogen, drawing his own. Stepping into character, Goober announced, "I am for you."

Aiden

Aiden slows himself, perhaps eager to skip a line to what is to come. His eyes hardly glance at the script open on the floor at his side.
"Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too? "
He asked with a hint of curiosity in his voice, trying to make himself the true romeo when he simply was looking for a reason to kiss the beautiful Juliet.

Autumn52

Xandi smiled at Aiden's attempts to gain a kiss.

She simply read her next line as they practiced for the play.....

"Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer"

She wondered how sweet Aiden's lips would taste on hers, unconsciously licking her lips as she spoke the words of Juliet.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

Imogen

Imogen caught the rapier with her free hand and tossed the wooden one off the stage. It skittered across the floor and landed behind a low table laden with props of all kind. "Perfect!" She exclaimed, brandishing the gleaming weapon. "Nice to meet you, Jay. My name's Imogen. I hope to play Mercutio." She grinned. "But you already saw that!"

Sidestepping an imaginary Romeo Imogen readied for 'Tybalt'. One arm behind her back in fencer's stance, she raised the tip of her blade. Her chin came up in stubborn defiance of the words of peace Romeo would speak during the play.

"Come, Sir, your passado", Mercutio insisted.

Tharic

Rolin rushed into the back of the theater, his last call back had gone almost 2 hours over schedule, making him very late. His bag almost falling off his shoulder in his haste to make it towards the front of the theater, "Sorry, sorry, I made it! Sorry! Um, yes, I think Kyrsa would make a very fine producer."

With Kyrsa voted as the Producer the auditions were soon called to a start.  Thespian after thespian was called upon to sing, to dance, and, of course, to act; to a shadowed row of investors and directors they played courtier and courtesan.  They charmed and enticed, each one giving (just perhaps) the audition of their life.  It was as the auditions were drawing to a close that the gathered thespians could feel the slight chill in the air, the unknown ominous air of death as the hollowed ghosts of the de Chantal Theater knew they would soon be growing in numbers.  Released back to the stage and dressing rooms to wait for the decisions to come (they were told "not long" yet that was never a definite answer in the theater business), it wasn't long before that spectral number grew by one ...

The fair Natalia would have been perfect for the role of Juliet with her long dark hair, creamy features and demure figure highlighted by ingrained grace and innocence.  Unfortunately, for poor Natalia, she also shared the fate of death for the young romantic heroine as she was discovered propped beside a cut out tree, its roots stained with blood; through her heart had been plunged a dagger.

Who among them could do such a horrifying deed?

Goober

(OOC: ...:( It seems that no one wants to be the first to post...that or everyone just forgot about this? I don't want this thread to become inactive...so might as well go for it...)

Goober stands in silence along with the rest of the cast and crew. They had just learned of a terrible news. There was death within the Theater. More specifically, Natalia, who was supposed to cast as Juliet, was brutally murdered. Having no idea who committed the murder, only knowing that they were among the cast and crew, Goober was hesitant to step forward and name names...but apparently so were the rest of those gathered on such solemn occasion. Sighing, Goober decided that if he didn't speak, the silence would go on forever. "Obviously, I have no idea who the murderers are, but since there hasn't been a lot of activity, and we really didn't know Natalia that well, I can only venture a guess as to whoever one of the murderers might be. I choose...Rolin..."

"I apologize if I accused wrongly, Rolin, but obviously, we must make an accusation, and given such little information we have, well, lets say I hope we won't become enemies because of a foolish guess on my part..." Goober looked worried. If the murder indeed happened to be Rolin, his days as an actor might be limited...

Remiel

When Remiel arrived at the grim scene, he hurled his arms into the air, his expression an elaborate portrait of grief and horror.

"Alas, poor Natalia!" he cried, his voice warbling with emotion, yet still managing to carry to the back of the house.  "I knew her, Horatio!"

He strutted toward center stage, one arm shielding his forehead from the harsh spotlights.  "(She was) a lady of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy.  She hath bore me on her back a thousand times, and now how abhorr'd in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it."

He bit his fist, choking off sobs of manufactured lamentation, before addressing the imaginary audience again.  "I'faith, methinks the scoundel who purported this foulest of deeds was none other than thirteenhearts!  She has long been jealous of Natalia's beauty, as the faded and wilted dandelion is envious of the rose."

His speech finished, he took a bow and stepped aside.  Then, quietly, he muttered to himself.

"Padding my tights...honestly!

Imogen

Imogen hesitated, looking at the poor, beautiful Natalia from some distance. She had not known the girl well, but even to her inexpert eye she had seemed perfect for the role of juliet... So, it would kind of follow that the murderer had some personal vendetta or had been interested in removing this actor from the talent pool. But who? Xandi came to mind, but she couldn't really seriously imagine she'd do something that vile.. Still, with Natalia's death Xandi had a part and a romeo to gain.

Autumn52

As Xandi grieved for poor Natalia she was reminded of the grief the nurse felt at Juliet's passing.....(well what she thought was her passing)

"O lamentable day!
She's dead, deceased, she's dead; alack the day!
O lamentable day!
O woe! O woful, woful, woful day!
Most lamentable day, most woful day,
That ever, ever, I did yet behold!
O day! O day! O day! O hateful day!
Never was seen so black a day as this:
O woful day, O woful day!"

After speaking the lines with true hurt and grief she looked at Imogen who had accused her of such a hateful act and said, "Natalia was the perfect Juliet, I would never destroy such an artist as her. I aspire to be as she was, but not to take the part that was surely to be hers. But to pay homage to her beauty and talent. You on the other hand were offend by her lack of interest in your sexual advances. So perhaps a lover scorned would be a more appropriate place to look for the guilty,
I believe Imogen has reason to have wanted the beautiful Natalia's death.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

White Light be upon you if that is your wish

thirteenhearts

"O deadly sin! O rude unthankfulness!
Thy fault our law calls death; but the kind prince,
Taking thy part, hath rush'd aside the law,
And turn'd that black word death to banishment:
This is dear mercy, and thou seest it not."

Thirteen was seated in the lobby rehearsing parts of the script when the screams and cries of prop hands, fellow actors and sound technicians echoed in the theater.  She dropped her script on the floor and raced to where she heard the commotion.  A young man who was working on the lighting whispered to her that a fellow actor was found murdered in the theater.  A ghostly chill ran through Thirteen's body; she had heard about the strange happenings and stories of hauntings in the old building.

But who could have done such a vile thing?  Earlier in the day she had seen Imogen in the restroom scrubbing at a dark stain on her shirt but paid no mind to it.  Could she have had something to do with Natalia's murder?

Valerian

Val was torn.  It was impossible to believe that Rolin, thirteen, Xandi, or Imogen would have done something so horrible, but the same could be said of everyone here.  She might not know everyone here well, but she knew them all by reputation, at least, and she couldn't imagine any of them being so ruthless.

Still, everyone was expected to speak up, and she'd have to choose someone.  If she didn't, they might think she was responsible!  She hesitated, then finally said, "Maybe risingdemon knows something.  I did hear she was even more envious of Natalia than most of us are."  She clung to her already faintly battered script, looking around at her fellow thespians.
"To live honorably, to harm no one, to give to each his due."

Tharic

A single tear slipped down Rolin's right cheek, thinking back to all of the time he had spent with Natalia.  He took a deep breath, pulling his purple leg warmers up, then stood slowly. He still couldn't believe Natalia was dead.

Who could have done such a thing?

He couldn't imagine anyone doing such a thing.. He sighed again, slowly wiping the tear off of his cheek. "If it must be someone, I can only agree, perhaps it was Imogen."

Imogen

Imogen calmly shook her head. "I wasn't me. Accusing me would be a dire mistake. We are all in the dark as to who it might have been, but I strongly suggest you look elsewhere for your accusations."

Marguerite

Marguerite rubbed at her eyes, bleary from the party which happened in one of the booths. She only heard about the death a few minutes ago and wondered if there was a murderer trying to remove anyone who got in their way of obtaining a great part. "I can only think of voting for Imogen who looks as if a few might have Intel and not giving it around to save the rest of us."

Kye

Kyrsa paced back and forth, looking from one suspect to another with a sad shake of her head.  "How are we to know who it could be?  There's no evidence to point at any one of us that I know of..."  With a dramatic sigh her eyes stop on Xandi.  "Please don't take it personally... I simply don't know who to choose..."

Imogen

She lofted a brow at Marguerite.

"I highly doubt anyone is better informed than myself, or would be, if I had more time to review the props and see where the dagger had come from. Once again, I urge you all to accept it would be highly foolish to lay the blame on me."

Izu

Izu simply stared at one point, his face pale, eyes filled with tears, unable to believe that the lovely Natalia had been murdered. Who would do anything like this? And just for a role? For he guessed that the murderer had envied Natalia and wanted her place... So... it had to be a woman... He looked around all the women's faces, finding all of them looking suspicious (or maybe he was just a little bit paranoid (which he totally was)). Biting on his bottom lip as he tried to gather his courage to speak up, he only managed to mumbled a quiet 'Xandi'...

Imogen

Imogen threw her hands up in despair and rolled her eyes heavenwards. "If you want a better chance to find out who has done this, it would be a good idea to vote someone else."

No one seemed to hear any of her words, however, and so she sat down at a desk backstage, and penned a letter to her agent, detailing what should be done with the money owed to her for partaking in this play. Most of the benificiaries were charity organizations, but she did urge her agent to ensure no money was sent to acting schools or drama classes. That latter was tripple underlined.

Although Xandi had been convinced of Imogen's guilt in the beginning she now believe that someone else was guilty. And while changing her vote would only partially help Imogen she had to try. It would also make things more harmful for her own life but she could not sentence an innocent person to die.

I believe we have all be mislead. I thought that Imogen was guilty at first too, but now I truly believe that ThirteenHearts has tricked us all. I believe that Imogen has much to offer to the success of finding the true murders. Please I beech you, help me save Imogen.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

The fair Imogen's fate seemed doomed, indeed, as the cast and crew waited to hear a name from Aiden, when the tides of suspicion and ill will suddenly changed.  Unable to hold back those who now cast her in such a murderous light, thirteenhearts knew her time on stage had come to a rather bittersweet end.  One by one the stage lights fell to a hushed dim until only a single spotlight remained on the woman destined to be the Lady Capulet.

"O me! This sight of death is as a bell

That warns my old age to a sepulchre."

The noose that swung down from the catwalk, seeming to fall with clever precision, came the moment the words had left her lips, ringing out clearly to the back of the theater; a moment later, the hidden floor beneath her swept down, and Lady Capulet -- to be played by the Understudy thirteenhearts -- was no more.  The Thespians could breathe a sigh of relief for they were a little more safe now going into the next act -- almost.

One Understudy had been uncovered ... but what of the others?

The spotlight faded.

Imogen rubbed her neck and swallowed thickly, exchanging a glance with a Xandi. "Thanks", she said quietly, not quite able to suppress a shiver. She supported herself with one hand on the table, and stared at the empty space where thirteenhearts had been in numb shock.

#42

All was not quiet within the de Chantal Theater as the lights withheld their flare, the cast and crew taking shelter within the booths, each other, and knowing they were being watched, analyzed -- their fates were being held by foreign hands, whether they trusted them or not.  Unfortunately for one of the cast and crew, those hands were cut away.  With but a subtle turn of a knob, the house lights briefly flared, signaling the start of Act 2, and the curtains rose.  On stage left a lone candle flickered, its quiet light softly illuminating the wooden chair and its slumped occupant.  With an empty jug of wine in hand, Mercutio's sword at his feet, the Thespian Aiden lay cold and starved of life, his eyes bugged wide and one hand caught on the thick rope twined around his neck.

The Understudies had struck again.

Xandi grieved for Aiden, her would be Romeo. How could anyone murder such an artist. He was handsome, talented, and wow could he KISS.

She looked around the room at the other actors and focused her attentiion on Goober. He was always jealous of Aiden. Xandi Looked at Goober and said, "Why, Why Goober? Why did you kill Aiden, he was such a fine man."

Her weeping took over and she ran off the stage.

Puzzled at Xandi's actions Goober stares at Xandi open-mouthed. Goober turned to the rest of the population gathered. "I don't know why Xandi thinks I, of all people, would want to kill Aiden. Why, I barely even know him...and would have liked to get to know him better..."

Hmm, I think the killer might be Rolin...

Imogen

Imogen listened quietly to both Goober and Xandi, and turned away, a crease of worry marring her brow. Her gaze fell to Mercutio's abandoned sword. In the play Tybalt had killed Mercutio. Had Goober not been eager to take up that part?

Coincidence?

Perhaps, but the subconscious is an odd instrument. It shows more than one is willing to reveal.

"I think Xandi might be on to something. I believe Goober killed Aiden."

Rolin sighed softly, shaking his head at Goober's accusation of him yet again. "I'm sorry, but you are mistaken. In an attempt to divert the spotlight from you, you attempt to shine it on me. I believe it was you, Goober, who killed Aiden."

Remiel

Remiel sighed.  "I didn't know that thirteenhearts was capable of such a notorious deed, but now it makes sense.  She was always jealous of my..." and here he struck his best William Shatner-esque pose.

"...Incredible!

Acting!

... ... ...

...  Talent!"

He glanced sidelong at Imogen and Xandi.  "I have no idea what transpired between Imogen, Aiden, and Xandi, but, obviously, as they were correct about thirteenhearts, methinks I shall cast my lot in with them, for now.  Goober, I'm afraid your career with the Grand de Chantal Theatre is over."

Glancing down at the crotch of his tights he noticed that the sock had slipped a bit to the left.  He turned around, blushing, and surreptitiously adjusted it.

Valerian

Val listened quietly to the voting, glancing uneasily at Goober.  He looked so innocent!  But then, they all did.  They were all actors, after all, so they must all know how to act innocent when they needed to.  She sighed, and wished she'd picked a different profession.

"Well," she finally said, slowly, "since you all seem so sure, I suppose Goober must have done it.  I wish I was sure, about anything.  This is like living through the Scottish play, not auditioning for Romeo and Juliet!"  And she continued to fiddle nervously with her script, eyeing everyone in turn.

Izu

Izu bit on his bottom lip as he listened to everyone pointing their finger at Goober. Was this right? Of course not, taking in mind that there were now to killed people - an innocent and a murderer... He sighed quietly and shook his head. Marguerite gasped at Izu and frowned at the darling. "Oh, you are just jealous Izu because I ran off with Moirae to seduce her at her apartment and did not invite you along. I am sorry that my love of Eric and Bill are too much for you to handle but I had no hand in the murder of the Mercutio. Besides, I was busy enjoying a chorus girl when the murder happen. Kye

After listening to her fellow thespian's debate back and forth Kyrsa grumbled slightly to herself and shook her head, still unsure who it could be.  "Once again I must vote without any guidance.  Hopefully luck will be with me and Goober will actually be the guilty party."  With that decision made Kyrsa wandered back to her new desk back stage and began to look over the script once more.  After all the show must go on.

With so many fellow Thespians against him, Goober's fate seemed doomed without hope -- which was precisely how his end came to be.  There were no escape routes, no slight of hands or tricks, nor any prettily turned word left that could possibly save his life.  As the final vote, the lingering words of the Producer, echoed off stage, one by one the stage lights dimmed to blackness before a single spotlight was left on the accused.  A second later the spotlight turned red before the stage dropped into complete darkness; a high pitched male scream then sounded, sending chills down the spines (and an ache in the ears) of those on stage.

When the lights flared back to life, the Understudy Goober, to have played the role of Montague, was seen no more.  The cast and crew had chosen wisely and could rest a little easier now that two of the fearsome Understudies were no more.  But ... what of the third?

Danger still lurked and did so nearby.

As the house lights gave a flicker it was slowly revealed that despite a flurry of shadowed activity not one of the cast and crew had suffered injury during their wait.  As ever vigilant, the Director had made a wise choice in who they protected from the remaining Understudy.

Would this make it harder or easier to identify the final threat to the Thespians?

Autumn52

#62
As Xandi looked around the theater she noticed one person who seemed to be acting a little odd. The Beautiful Kyrsa had been acting odd since the very first day. She had voted against Xandi in one round but that was not proof of anything as Xandi well knew, everyone was guessing at first.

Now Xandi stood in the midst of her fellow Thespians and she cleared her throat to gain everyones attention. "I only have one thing more to say before night falls upon us yet again. I think our producer has been acting a bit strange for sometime now. She was in love with the poor Aiden and when she saw his affection for me she killed him and now that we have uncovered her plans with her fellow understudies she plans yet another death as we speak. I implore you all to vote with me and be done with this nasty business. Once the final understudy is discovered we can honor our lost friend with the performance of a lifetime, knowing that his death has been avenged."

"O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name;
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet."

As Xandi recites the last scene she had rehearsed with Aiden she weeps openly and walks to a chair on the side of the stage and sits down to mourn her lost Romeo.

May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

Valerian

Val started to say something, stopped, swallowed hard, then worked up her courage.  "Well, I still don't know what's going on," she finally said, awkwardly.  "And I can't believe I'm doing this... I mean, I voted for her for producer!  But Xandi hasn't steered us wrong yet, and I trust her.  I vote for Kyrsa, too."  And with that, she sat down hurriedly, blushing faintly.
"To live honorably, to harm no one, to give to each his due."

Remiel

"This day's black fate on more days doth depend!" cried Remiel, his fist shaking perhaps a bit more than was strictly necessary.  "This but begins the woe others must end!" he added, choking off a manufactured sob.  He paused a bit, for effect, but when nobody applauded he slumped, annoyed.

"This theatre has too long been held captive by the whims of its producer!" he mumbled.  "Although we shall have to sacrifice, this production shall be independent!  Kyrsa, we bid you adieu!"

Autumn52

As the Actors and Actresses began making their votes known Xandi listened and began to doubt one other persons voting history.

She said in a loud and clear voice, "I think I will withdraw my vote against Kyrsa for now. I have suspicions of another and before the night is through we shall know who our other killer is.

So Please remove my vote for the time being. I will vote again after I am more certain of who our killer is."

Xandi was upset by her own uncertainty. Finally she decided the time had come to let her suspisions be made know.

I think the final understudy is Marguerite. She has hidden herself away with obsure votes and playfully taking attention away from herself playing with Izu.

Kye

Kyrsa gives Xandi a thankful smile.  "Thank you Xandi... I don't know who it could be, but I will trust your instincts, they haven't been wrong yet.  All I know is that I am not the murderer, so perhaps Marguerite has something to hide..."

Marguerite

"Actually, Xandi is completely wrong considering you might have gotten the first two understudies but I am not the last one. I am merely just an actress looking to play the gender bending role of Romeo. I really have been quiet because I am enjoying myself with other actors and actresses. Though it really does not matter because it seems a girl cannot have fun without being evil for it." Marguerite shook her head and stretched her arms above her head. She really did not care one way or another because two understudies were gone and the last one would be found out sooner or later. Should she die, at least she enjoyed almost all of the cast members and back stage help.

Before she headed off to make her way with the backstage handler once more, she stopped to give the last few words, "Should I am revealed to be an actor and not an understudy, you should look towards Xandi or those who piggy backed on to vote me as the supposed understudy to be taken out as well." Marguerite knew who it was to be the actual soothsayer and headed off.

Imogen raised a brow hearing Marguerite's "defense".

"We all have our priorities, I suppose. Be that as it may, accusing Xandi is about as ridiculous as you can get. Two understudies are gone thanks to her, and if you feel that is suspicious in any way, then I have no choice but to cast my vote on you."

Marguerite

Marguerite laughed at the fools who accused her. "Nay, Xandi is most wrong in her assumption and you will only give the understudies another death to be happy over. Go ahead and lynch me, I do not care for I made my bed and will happily lie in it with the lovelies who I have smooched and canoodled." Marguerite waited and crossed her arms knowing her fate and seeing the cast would suffer a great loss and an ally in finding the last understudy. Still, she planned to enjoy this witch hunt as she pulled out a bottle of wine to enjoy before being hanged. "A girl always needs to get her last drink before death comes around to ask her to dance." Oh how happy she was to accept death for the understudy would still be alive to murder another again.

The tides of death had changed with but one name murmured: Kyrsa.  One by one all lights dimmed until a sole spotlight remained on the fair woman and Producer; a moment later it turned crimson as the noose fell down about her neck and the hinges of the hidden door beneath her began to creak to life.

"What, drawn, and talk of peace! I hate the word,

As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee:

Have at thee, coward!"

Shrieks sounded through the theater, Tybalt's words echoing as the door gave way and Kyrsa was no more, her last breath taken with the noose's cinch.  What fluttered from her pocket, however, was not a note of secrets between villains but one of set changes and lighting cues, for the woman destined to portray Tybalt, who had been named among her peers as the Producer, had also been the Director and savior of the Thespians.

Without their guardian the Thespians were now more than ever at risk from the remaining Understudy.

"Death lies on her like an untimely frost

Upon the sweetest flower of all the field."

The shadows in de Chantal theater stirred once again.  It was the all seeing Imogen who paced the stage, script in hand and the passages for Capulet highlighted in yellow while others were marked in various colors, notes scribbled for props, sounds, times, names, placements and more.  Perhaps she was too caught up in the lines of the part that'd been given to her, or perhaps it was the thoughts of finding out who the remaining Understudy was, as a lack of information was always a Stage Manager's worse fear.

A fear that came to life when the shadowed figure slipped behind the Stage Manager, the seer of the Thespians, and plunged in the dagger just as the final word left Imogen's lips.  Dramatically she gasped, the script dropping to the stage floor as her eyes widened; a shriek caught in her throat as she fell to the ground and the curtains closed.

The Understudy had chosen well.

How would the Thespians fare in electing a new Producer and finding the remaining Understudy now?

Remiel

Upon learning not only that Kyrsa, the Director, was dead, but also that the insidious Understudy had murdered Imogen, the Stage Manager, as well,  Remiel turned a ghastly shade of ghostly pale.  Then he ran outside, not stopping once he had reached the street.  Turning to face the sky, his face a portrait of quintessential agony, he shook his fist and yelled,

"KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"

Once he had gotten that out of his system, he ran back inside.  Once there, breathless and flushed, he paused to pat the sweat from his forehead with a towel before saying,

"Clearly we cannot trust Marguerite and Izu.  I believe we cannot trust Valerian, either.  As for Rolin -- although perhaps getting drunk on wine is, perhaps, the appropriate response to all that has happened so far,  we need someone who can think with a level head.  That only leaves Xandi.  I believe Xandi will aptly and competently carry out the duties as our new Producer."

Valerian

Val, still pale from learning of this latest terrible death and how defenseless they now all were -- well, all except one of them -- was now even more rattled after Remiel's amazingly loud yell, which was still quite clear even from the street.  She gave him an odd look as he returned and breathlessly cast his vote.

"Are you kidding?  If you think you can't trust me, then you definitely can't trust Xandi.  I followed her lead in voting for Kyrsa -- just like you did, Remiel -- because Xandi convinced us that she knew something useful.  But apparently she's listening to all the wrong people, and they're telling her all the wrong things.  If she's so easily swayed, she shouldn't be in charge.  I vote for Marguerite.  Thanks to Xandi's confusion, Marguerite was forced to vote for Kyrsa to save herself, so we can't hold that against her.  I think we can trust her."

Then she stopped, blushed, and sat down again, huddling unhappily in a corner.  "Besides, we need someone tough to protect us," she murmured.

Xandi crossed her arms and looked at everyone...

My vote goes for Valerian.

That was all she said as she went to sit down. How could anyone not think her trustworthy after all she had sacrificed for the sake of the whole. She silently wept.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

White Light be upon you if that is your wish

Marguerite

"You lie Xandi for you could be the understudy who killed Kyrsa and not me in order to throw off suspicion. You would not be the one to save us but to kill us. I vote for Valerian for this woman will get rid of the last understudy."

Remiel

Remiel gave Valerian a sober look (which was probably more than Rolin was capable of at the moment) as he went to comfort Xandi, gallantly offering her his handkerchief.  "Yes, Valerian, Xandi did vote for Kyrsa, initially.  However, she then changed her vote to Marguerite, when you and I did not.  I still maintain that she is the only one out of all of us who can truly be trusted."

Valerian

"Well, all I'm maintaining is that I don't know who to trust anymore," Val sighed.  "And I guess you don't even trust yourself anymore, Remiel," she added, with a bleak smile.  "No, I know, you can't vote for yourself.  Besides, I'm sure Xandi means well.  We're just all confused, and she got carried away.  I'm sorry, Xandi."  She sighed again and turned to stare at the floor just past her toes.

It took some time before one of the chorus members were able to locate Rolin, sleeping away his drunkenness in a closet and entirely unable to vote.  Not, it was realized, that his vote would have mattered; Valerian swept away the votes and with the sheepish report of the chorus member, she became the new Producer.

Now, onto the more gruesome matters at hand ...

Remiel rolled his eyes.  "No one listens to me! Why does no one ever listen to me?"  He crossed his arms, and fumed, throwing a tantrum in the finest tradition of divas everywhere.  "Look, it is quite clear to me that our murderer is either Marguerite or Valerian.  (Although, I suppose it's equally likely it could be Izu. But never mind. )   Marguerite is the obvious choice; therefore, naturally,  I suspect Valerian as our culprit."

"Now, if anyone wants me, I'll be in my trailer."  He stomped off, knowing full well that he didn't really have a trailer.

Marguerite

Xandi is the culprit! I have nothing more to say.

Remiel popped his head out of his "trailer" (which was, in fact, the men's bathroom at the theater).   "Are you guys nuts? Are you insane? Xandi is the only person out of all of us that we can trust! She was right about thirteenhearts, after all, and was the first one to vote for Goober."

Wishing not to throw his vote away, he changed it to Marguerite.

Marguerite

Marguerite merely shrugged and grabbed herself a bottle of wine to enjoy for tonight.

Val hesitated, sighed, then shook her head sadly.  "I'm sorry, Xandi.  I don't know what else to do."

As the day drug on Xandi knew her next move would shock everyone. She stood once more and looked around the room.

Saying softly in an exhausted voice, "To be absolutely fair to everyone hear I don't know who is the guilty party but I guess we will leave it up to Rolin to decide our fate. I am not certain of Margs guilt I am only guessing but one observation I would like to make is that the true culprit can vote anyway they please this round. Since they are the final understudy, they can vote with someone who has proven their innocences over and over in vote after vote and know that is does not matter. Please remember my words in any case."

As she finished speaking she looked suspiciously at Remiel, Marg, Valerian, and then Izu and Rolin.

Marguerite laughed at Xandi, "Just give it up! I am not the understudy and while it was unfortunate for Kyrsa to side with a killer, you will be taken down and hung for everyone to see. You will not ruin this play that has been made for everyone." She pointed to Xandi and then put the finger to her neck to show Xandi was as good as gone.

There was a crash heard from backstage, followed by roaring, drunken laughter, the heavy falling of feet and then several metal clangs after another, larger crash.  An extra called out, "Rolin!  Put down that wine!"

"Osh, shoosh, Val.  Er.  Whosh are yoush?"

Suddenly there was a thud and then,

"Rolin?  You okay, dude?  Uh oh... "

"A glooming peace this morning with it brings;

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head..."

Thus, it was Xandi who was taken to the center of the stage, the single red spotlight falling on her once all other lights dimmed.  However, the woman chosen for the role of Prince Escalus was not revealed as the final Understudy but as an innocent, budding Thespian.

Danger was still very present in the de Chantal Theater.

"And we're rollin'..."

"Yeaaah, we're rollin."

"Oooh, rollin."

"Rollin' down the rii --- "

The chorus member's head shot up when the voice of the Thespian Rolin, above on the catwalk, suddenly broke off with a strangled gasp.  A moment later drops of freshly spilled blood splattered down onto his cheek.  For a second he could do nothing, and then with a blood curdling scream he raced to his feet and went running to the stage.

"He's dead! Benvolio -- Rolin -- is dead! Murder!  Murder!"

And then he promptly fainted center stage.

The Understudy had struck again.

Remiel

"MURDER!" cried Remiel, who was nearly frothing at the mouth by this point. "Murder most foul! A plague on both your houses! They have made worm's meat of poor Rolin."

He stared up at the corpse of Rolin, currently crumpled on the catwalk.

"What fools have we mortals been!  I am beginning to believe the murderer is not one, but all three of you, so complicit are you in your banality.  But hark! The mystery is then, not why Rolin is dead, but, rather, why am I alive?  For if the murderer was Valerian, surely she should have silenced me, after having her accuséd of't.  The fact that I am here says otherwise.  Marguerite, then?  Likewise, that I voted for her, surely mine the voice that must be silenced.

"But no! Whoe'er the grim and honorless rogue it was, perforce decided that Rolin, that drunkard, with his random accusations, was a more dangerous threat than the three of us, who, on the face of it, should have yet retained their wit and wisdom.  What does that say?  A fool, voting randomly, is better to have quietus borne than three fools with their so-called 'logic'.  Reasoning thus, I can conclude only that we were on the mistaken path all along, and it is in fact Izu who has been playing us all."

Valerian

Val backed slowly away from Remiel as he went through these fits.  "I'm not sure any of us have retained our wit and wisdom at this point," she murmured uneasily.

"There's no trust,

The words of The Nurse tumbled dramatically from Remiel's lips as he, like those before him, was drawn to the center stage as the red spotlight fixed on him leaving him drenched in crimson shadows.  Yet, like so many before him, it wasn't an Understudy that was caught in the noose's coil but an innocent Thespian.

The final Understudy remained at large and the last two Thespians knew they were not safe.

"Famine is in thy cheeks,
Need and oppression starveth in thy eyes,
Contempt and beggary hangs upon thy back.
The world is not thy friend, nor the world's law;
The world affords no law to make thee rich;
Then be not poor, but break it, and take this."

The fair Thespian Marguerite gave a dramatic sweep of her hand as Romeo's words fell easily from her lips.  The last sounds died just as the air above her shifted and the terrible axe came swinging down from the catwalk.  Just as its deadly arc cleaved for her neck the curtain fell, the thud of her body barely muffled, seemingly fitting that poor Romeo met his end before that of Juliet.

Slowly Valerian emerged from stage left, the stage light gleaming off the long sword she carried.  There needed no verbal confirmation that she, the woman cast in the role of Lady Montague, was indeed the last Understudy and murderer of so many innocent Thespians.  There was a glimmer of surprise in her eyes when Izu blindly reached to the side, a sword momentarily pushed into his hands from off stage, and he turned to her.

"I have no joy of this contract to-night:
It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden;
Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be
Ere one can say 'It lightens!'"

Izu cried out the fair Juliet's words, flinging off his cape with a flourish and leaping forward, his sword thrust out toward the final Understudy.  There was not but a moment for the Understudy to react, the tip of the sword piercing her cold heart just as the curtain unraveled and heavily fell to the floor.  The final Thespian had prevailed.

The applause that followed from the audience thundered.
