Monday 4-16-07 a shooter went on a rampage killing 33 and injuring 15 at Virginia Tech.

Those who pray please pray for these families who lost someone...

II can't even imagine....

I do what my rice krispies tell me to!

Art is  not my work, its source online is now down, but it was a Romusz

I'm not sure travesty is the right word to use for this Lancis.
Certainly it is tragic and horrible.

I haven't actually managed to catch up on the news this morning, but we were watching last night (our time), live coverage.

Just a little confusion there......
The first thing I would like to know is that if a college goes into 'lock down',  how can a gunman continue of through a college and get into a class to mow his way through even more people....

30+ young people dead, many others badly injured and countless others with horrifying memories they will most probably never forget.
It really is very sad and VERY hard to understand......
It's been fun, but Elvi has now left the building

Lilac

Ugh.

Not a way to start the week. ;_;

I'm not sure that the college went in to lockdown until the second shootings began. The way I understand it, reading some things online, they thought the first shooting was a random domestic dispute. One of the students has also said there were no announcements made after the first shooting, that the faculty took two hours writing out emails to send around.

My wife is an alum of Virginia Tech, and our niece was there Saturday for a recruitment visit.

The Campus is huge, sprawling and rural.

The Campus went on lockdown after the two incidents were over. So, going on lockdown didn't prevent anything because it was already over. All the lockdown did was give the authorities time to sweep the buildings for survivors and victims. The school ordered the lockdown after they had started to talk to a person of interest, which means the police thought that they had the perpetrator.

The campus itself is 26 or so acres, spread out over a vast area in SW Virginia. The Campus has nearly 30,000 students.

TheAlchemist

I don't know what the exact timeline of events was, but as I see it - The Administration/Police/Whomever can 'declare lockdown' until they're blue in the face as soon as the first shot is fired. It has absolutely no impact or effect on the shooter nor the victims. The former is going to stop shooting just because it was declared (even if he knew about it), and the latter most likely have no inkling of what to DO, even if they heard about it.

It takes VERY little time to shoot a person, or empty a magazine and reload and empty it again. Unless there just happened to be someone *right there* who could take the shooter out, there's very little the average joe can do.

Ariabella

The only thing is, if they would have declared a lockdown immediately after the first shooting, the second wouldn't have happened. There was two hours between, and by their inaction, they gave the shooter plenty of time to cross the campus and get to the classrooms. Would it have stopped the first death and injuries? No. Would it have stopped the other 31 deaths? Yes.

Well I am not getting into the why's and wherefors on this thread, it's not what it was set up for.

I'm sure it'll all become clearer as people start piecing together the facts and movements.
Until then, I will remain feeling very sorry for those who died and their families.

I've read the lastest news on this matter.
The boy was known to have written a disturbing play for his literature classes, entitled 'McBeef'. The play was about a pedophile father molesting his son and the family killing each other in bloody ways.
So it might be the boy was molested in his youth, perhaps.

It does sound like it, doesn't it. They also found a note or something saying that he hated rich people.

'Spoiled rich kids, debauchery and deceit' is what I've read.
To me it sounds like he felt excluded and probably was.

Ariabella

Normally, I would agree, but his neighbors also said he was outside a lot playing basketball, and he would ignore them when they spoke to him, saying hi and what not. I'm sure he was excluded, but the question would be if the others excluded him, or if he excluded himself.

If he was a pedophile victim, he could have been emotionally damaged.
He might have been reacting with anger to normal situations and to normal relationships, etc...
But I'm no psychologist and we don't have more info. It could be thousands of details to consider.

Ariabella

True, very true. We may never know I suppose.

Well  think this was enough of a 'cry for help' for a hell of a lot of us to want to know.......

shadowheart

I got 'excluded' from time to time.

Everyone does.

I didn't get a gun and kill people.

Sympathy and empathy are one thing, but lets not get lost in "Oh poor him, society was so against him".  It's against many people and again .. they don't kill people.

Ixy

This is... er... awkward for me.  I live in Blacksburg.  Yay me.  So I just gotta say that my heart's with the families.

I don't really think the gunman matters here, though.  People like him, sadly, become insignificant in the face of their actions.  In the end, he's a sad boy whose last act was horrible, but the beauty of the lives lost will, god willing, spread through those who survive them and live on.  That's what matters.
