He drunk some of the cranberry juice and a few minutes later started bawling about his home planet. It caused the rest of us to be maudlin as we sipped our fruit juices and thought about our homes. We ended up singing songs that sounded more drunk than we actually were, and then we decided we would fix the ship and find out ways home.

Alisha sat at the furthest corner of the bar counter and looked on at the maudlin young lad sitting across from them, his hands shaking as he held onto the glass, eyes downcast and himself lost in deep thoughts. She then slapped the half dozing man sitting to her right on his chest and whispered, "we have a case Marvin, come on". It was well known among the Casted Bar that the Lester siblings were a bit of self proclaimed detectives who had taken it upon themselves to solve mindless cases that walked through the doors of the bar. Much to everyone's chagrin, the duo had claimed time and again that they were able to once solve a murder just by looking into the eyes of the man, but this - tonight was no murder case, it was the case of a heartbreak. A terrible and beautiful heartbreak.

Marvin dazedly looked up at the man his sister pointed at and nodded, "yes yes, just hold on a bit". He guzzled down the remaining bit of his drink before he hopped off the stool and wavered over to the other side of the counter.

Her sustained crying filled the reservoirs, and then over-filled them. The lands started flooding, even as her best friend tried to calm her down. It was great for the neighbouring countries which were plagued with drought, but not so for her home, which was now submerged underwater.

The boy cachinnated at the seemingly boring joke that the comedian struggled with. His laughter had been the only sound in the large room, much to the chagrin of the others who sat there, all turning their gazes in his direction and just wondering exactly what had been so amusing. Unperturbed by their harsh glares and huffs, the boy continued to cackle adding in a series of claps along with it.

“She’s sustained a lot of nerve damage, we might have to operate but before we do that, we might need you to understand how the operation would go”, the doctor was calm and his voice unwavering as he stood there, patiently waiting for them. He had to come to grips with the reality of his own soul; he wanted to believe or pretend that he was not the kind of bigot that his friend had told him that he was. Peter felt that he was morally superior, not inferior, to others. He did not hate anybody, he did not have a coursing rage going through his body that dictated being mean or being rude to others, and he did not deliberately discriminate.

Yes, there was a part of him that wondered - aren't friends there to show each other their faults and weaknesses? Perhaps he believed he had been covered in a type of righteousness that made him immune from finding fault and creating or sustaining friction to those around him. But perhaps he was wrong. Perhaps, in actuality,he lay bare, exposed, unhinged, maybe even uncovered and he didn't realize it. Maybe the reason we let friends into our hearts is because we, unwittingly, prove how diaphanous our heart really is - and how our friends can really perceive who we are.

And after all, they say that it is not the kisses of the enemy we need ... but the wounds of the friend is what is necessary to proceed to the next level of humane gentleness.
