Child-eating ogres are actually not all that uncommon in folklore.  In Austria and Hungary, there's the Krampus, which takes the 'bad children' away when St. Nick delivers presents to the 'good children'.  The witch in Hansel and Gretel is another example.  Some that might be more obscure outside their own cultures:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogeyman

Hell, the only thing I got in my home town is 5,000 year old petroglyphs and folklore about trolls and giants kidnapping unbaptized children and replacing the infants with their own unwanted children.
