This is an interest check for a sci-fi survival horror type game.

Think Alien and the countless other movies that have ripped it off.

The exact nature of the Big Bad can be discussed, but the broad outlines of the plot would be as such: a rescue ship is sent to investigate either a remote colony or a bigger ship where communications have gone dark.

Initially they will find the place or vessel they are supposed to salvage largely abandoned, though there will be signs of something bad having happened (perhaps messages written in blood on the bulkheads, signs of struggle, barricaded rooms, ...).

People will die in this game, though the order in which it happens will be determined through a combination of plot choices and sheer random luck.

The idea is for only a few (or perhaps even just one) of the crewmembers to make it to the end of the game.

I am looking for a crew of 5-8 people. I myself am looking to play the XO. I'm not sure if I will make the Captain a PC or leave him an NPC. Mostly because the departure of such a major character early on in the story might be problematic. Though considering they will find themselves in a hostile environment, I guess we could just bump off any such character, even the captain.  ;)

If you have an interest in such a game, feel free to leave a message in here.

If I see enough interested individuals, I might put up a character sheet and start brainstorming with the rest of your so we can create a more detailed backstory.

The year would be 2147

There are colonies on Mars, the Moon and Europa.

Regular space vessels can travel at the equivalent of 0.25 times the speed of light. Which is roughly the equivalent of impulse speed within the Trek universe.
At that speed, the following trips would take this amount of time:

Earth to the Moon5 seconds
Earth to the edge of the Solar system44 hours
Earth to Proxima Centauri20 years

A handful of experimental ships travel at speeds closer to 0.5-0.75 times the speed of light.
The fastest of those, the "Hypatia" is the ship I will center this game around.
It was launched 7 years ago with the intention of reaching Proxima Centauri.
Within six months of its launch, all communication ceased and it was deemed to be lost forever.
At the start of the game, deep space sensors would pick up a large vessel drifting in from the Oort Cloud.
It would be identified as the "Hypatia" and a rescue vessel would be sent out to investigate.

I am going to use the "Lewis and Clark" from the movie "Event Horizon" as my model for the rescue ship, just because I like the design and it seems to be the appropriate type and size for this particular mission.

Available roles:
The only role that is spoken for at this time is the XO (the character I will be playing).
That means that the captain is still up for grabs, but I would like whoever throws his or her hat in the ring for that role to be truly committed to this game.
This is a rescue vessel, which means that the skill set of the people on board should mirror that. Preferably they have all some (basic) battle proficiency as well as skills that would come in handy when helping out a ship in distress: engineering, communications, medical assistance, ...

Big fan of Alien and might be into something like depending on the setup.  :-)

Okay, looks like I already have enough characters to start the game.

I would like some more female players, or at least female characters before I start this.

Love me ALIEN, Dead Space, Pandorum... All that good stuff...

I'll jump in too if you'll have me! ^__^

As for characters, I'll take a look through my old Traveller and Firefly ones for inspiration, maybe mix a few together to get someone cool for here. :)

Strangefate

Well, I’d probably play a female character, depending on how the cast shakes out, if that helps the ratio at all.  You could also add a Female Players/Chars Wanted thingie to the thread title too.

(Is that Ben Wishaw as your profile pic wander?  I use him as a character avatar sometimes.  :D )

Haha! Yes it is!  ;D

On-topic, I'll see what characters are formed by the people here before I think too much on my character's general bio and role on the ship.

Something I forgot to mention initially in the opening post: all CS have to be sent to me first.

I'm just gonna hang back for the moment and wait for a clear picture of who's gonna play.  I'm still very interested (@#%@# ALIEN).  Perhaps we can run a poll of character archetypes that people might be inclined to play?  For me... I'm more likely to take up something along the lines of: the agitator/the one the captain has a problem with, or the aloof suspicious/sketchy, or quite simply the villain.

Amarlo

I'm usually more inclined to play a totally mentally fucked and terrified stupid survivor or hide away. That or medical.. Or munitions specialist.. I'm pretty flexible really.

Perhaps we should mention rank/role here to avoid any crossover and lessening people's chances?

RedEve

That is fine. This thread is meant to inspire discussion including which roles everyone would like to play.

Well with that in mind I'd guess the type of personnel that could exist there would be:

Captain
Navigation Specialist/Astrometrics/Pilot
Communications Specialist
Emergency Medical/Assistant
Doctor
Maintenance Engineer
Logistics/Technical
Tactical/Technical
Janitor
Astrophysicist
Nutrition Specialist/Cook
Etc, etc

Probably forgetting something here or there..

Oh, and First Mate... Which would probably be the logistics specialist xD Or whatever.

At the moment I'm thinking I might like to play the captain, navigator, or science officer.  Not to eliminate others from grabbing those roles if they already have an idea.  But just a general idea of the direction I might go in.  Basically an officer of some type.

I was gonna say Ship's Gunner or Marine to place my character in the action, though I'm pretty fine being the Pilot/Astrogator, basically the dude who sits behind the console and does the techno-babble, though I do like my action and would like to do more than sit behind the desk all of the time. :)

In previous Firefly games I've played a Guild's Trader and a Ship's Pilot and being the dude who can speak quite confidentally about how space travel works and understanding the physics behind alot of it (such as accel/deccel, coasting and the like) serves me well.

Sound cool if I take a role like that?

Strangefate

With further thought I think I might go the scientist direction, possibly microbiologist/chemist, something along those lines.  Although if nobody decides to play a doctor, I could skew it more in that direction I suppose since that seems kinda mandatory for a rescue mission.

Well they all could technically be marines in addition to those positions as their MOS. I suppose that all depends on Red eye.

Red eye? Well I guess I'm a bit tired...  ;D

As I said in a previous post, all characters should at least have passable battle proficiency, since they often times have no exact idea what they will be walking into.

That doesn't mean that each and every person on board is a Space Rambo. But they should have basic proficiency with a gun (kinetic weapons only in this game, no laserguns or whatever) and some experience in small units tactics.

I'm down for this idea; I'd roll a female character preferably anywho.

Would the nature of the Alien Menace\Existential Threat be erotic in nature, or purely violent?

Joel

Amarlo

I was actually curious about that as well. I would love to play a the sole surviving passenger as a Janitor or something on that ship xD For some reason it really tickles me that a ship full of potential military personnel all died except the lowly janitor. Lmfao.
