Angel Fire

Thank you for the clarification, y'all.  I wasn't sure if this was strictly infantry or not.  I just might go in a different direction here.

Since this is an armored infantry unit, I am thinking that my character could be the driver of one of these armored units and know how to fix them when it breaks down.  Of course when it is time to get on the ground and leave the armored unit behind, she will definitely join the rest of her firing unit.

Would this be doable?

By armour, I mean a suit of power armour, not an armoured vehicle. Clarification when I get home with pictures...

Well slap me with honey and let loose the kittens, I think I found the perfect group game to give my group game virginity to. I am such a SciFi Military nerd.

Plus it gives me the excuse to try playing a female character for once. If you'll have me, I'll try my best to fit in.

I kinda wondered that too, but you have a point if this is set in the near-far future. Powered Armor or Mobile Suits can be considered a Mechanized element. She just asked cause in this day and age a Mechanized Infantry unit has lightly armored fighting vehicles attached as transport and protection.

I'm very interested in learning the backstory to your idea. Who the hostiles are, or what they are. If it takes place off Earth then the military has starships to get you there, dropships for local transportation into and out of the battlespace...oh god I'm getting giddy.

Pictures will probably be photos rather than art work. I will make that decision when I get home. Pictures will not need to be in uniform and in fact would be better out of it. I will use art work to show the sort of battle armour I intend to use.

Cool, thanks.

Hi Mikem.

Yes I am aware of what a mech inf unit is. I can even tell you that the standard symbol is a diagonal cross (infantry) over a lozenge (armour). I have been playing war games since I was 14.

There is no back story, I'm sorry to tell you. The whole point of the story is that the big picture, the strategic situation, whether we are winning or loosing the war, these things are irrelevant to the story.

What technology exists outside of the infantry unit is also irrelevant except where it directly affects the characters. I may include some details later if I have the time.

Well... there went another idea out the window.  I guess the only thing that is left is just to be a young green private that is thrown in the fire... unless there is some other weapon specialty that is not an assault rifle.

At the risk of not minding my own business, could Angel Fire do a repair technician, or mechanic, or whatever the word is for weapons, armor and the like?  And Angel Fire, would you want to do that?
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

Hey angel, I just wanted to say angel that there are plenty of specialties that still lay withing infantry boundaries, like mine.  My character is a support class which, at least in video game scenarios, carries a light machine guns, then there are snipers, shotgun or CQC specialists, there are anti armor personnel that carry bazookas typically, though so far it doesn't seem like we'd be dealing with taking down vehicles, you could be a pretty normal soldier class with a rifle or assault rifle, or you could be a field medic (though that's still pretty much assault rifle or rifle for weapons, you also would be skilled in healing injuries) or there's what Andy mentioned(though Crystal didn't really clear that yet)

I was in no way trying to undermine your knowledge, in fact it's pretty cool that you're a war gamer.

From the point of view of the grunt, not knowing the bigger picture of things like the state of the conflict is a pretty common and interesting thing. Communication might be difficult and you're just given a task and expected to do it. Still gotta have some knowledge about who or what our barrels are pointed at though.

Thought about a Grenadier?

Well... everyone, I am sure, received some form of grenade training.  I am just not too keen on having my character move as close as she can and have to throw a grenade without getting her head blown off.

I guess what I am looking for is... well, something that she is better at than the rest of her squad.  I realize that she will have to use rifles and such, no matter what specialty she has.  I'll have to think about it once more information comes.

Grenades don't need to be hand thrown, a launcher is far more effective for ranged attacks. Take the latest Call of Duty installment. One weapon was a drum fed launcher that fired smart explosives that ignited small thrusters to hover and then track hostile targets. So you could dumb fire them from behind cover and the grenade would guide itself to a target.

Okay so, please remember that this is science fiction. We have power armour and so do the other side. Weapons have advanced considerably too. I will give more detail when I get home. But rail guns are heavy weapons for anti-vehicle, there are armoured vehicles on both sides, as well as aircraft. I also mentioned that some platoons will have a battle net technician. Basically the person who is responsible for fixing any problems with the data net and making sure it doesn't get hacked or wiped out by EMP. That is a possible specialist for someone.

Yay, another brit.

Oh god, I can already imagine what's going to end up. The enemy is no longer going to be hostiles, they'll be wankers. And lunch break is replaced with tea break... And that's just the start.

*Giggle* Well if you were in charge we'd all be ski troops...

Just kidding.

I'm really pleased to see the massive response to this. I am still working on the idea. Nothing is set in stone yet so please be patient and I will put things together when I get home.

Mmm... Now there's an idea there!  A woman who is a computer whiz and gets thrown into a war that she doesn't want to be in (essentially, she's drafted into it). *Smiles*

Are all soldiers using power armor?  If not, how many?

I'd presume it would be primary for the front-lines. For balancing reasons, it's probably not all too lightweight, though it's fair to presume it comes in different weight/defense classes. Per say a sniper who would need to be able to move quickly, would likely have a very light armor or none, while a frontline fighter/pusher would be heavier armed so she could take a couple shots.

As per usual though, don't take anything I say for granted since Chrystal is the one sitting with the actual data.

Sounds like a prime setting for a constant stream of utterly obscure propaganda!

"Ladies, today we fight against the oppressive foe, the scum of the planet! For too long have their foul deeds tainted this world, threatening all with their very existence! So despicable and vile are these villains, that we shan't even humour them with a name! All you need know is that you fight against evil, for freedom, for peace, and for justice! To you, to me, to all of us, they shall always be the enemy, nameless but no less dangerous! Onwards, to victory!"

All technical questions will be answered and all technical issues addressed, the technology will be explained and expanded upon and the issue of history sorted out, once I am back at home and able to use my computer. For now, if folks could save up the questions, you may find that they are answered by the details I have yet to decide upon.

I will say this: I am not anticipating everyone having a specialisation. The idea is for a line infantry unit. Specialists would be brought in from outside. I have already stated in the opening post that there is a heavy weapons platoon in each company. They would normally be held in reserve and committed as and when required. Not saying that the platoon wouldn't have a specialist but she would be a rifle first - as was pointed out earlier.

For now, please assume that everyone wears the same armour, even officers, and the only difference is what is attached to it and the level of access to Battlenet.

Isn't sharing other's cultures a wonderful thing? Those Marines returned home with valuable "combat experience".

Before I get too excited though I should probably learn how a group game actually works. This would be my first and I need to learn the method and order of when and where I post.
