The Town of Elliquiy <Interest Check>

The Town of Elliquiy is a medium sized down on the coast of Oregon.  It isn't terribly far away from Portland (which is to the south)...giving the residents access to the facilities there.  Being where it is, there is plenty of rain in the summer with warm temperatures.....snow in the winter.  Life for the residents is mostly what you would expect.

Obviously there is more to the town that meets the eyes of an outside....and I'm curious if anyone would like to become a resident of our fair town. The plan is for this to be something of a free-form game....as real life would be.  Each player is responsible for their own story and how it mixes and mingles with the stories of the other residents.  Of course, there will be some ground rules in place as to the town itself and the sorts of people that live in it (normal laws still apply....we'll not have an axe murderer running around offing people).

People will have the ability to create their characters, pick a career, and pick a place to live.  They can be married or single....Heterosexual, Homosexual, Bisexual, Transexual....or any number of other things.  However, they must all be human.  No shapeshifters or aliens.  It's present day, America. 

There will be maps and listings of business....and some NPCs.  This will all be developed if and when we have a basis going for the town.

So is anyone interested in playing with me?

You have it, exactly.  This is not about our E-Personas.....but rather, we all create characters to play whom are residents of this town. Average people with average lives......with above average sex lives. :)

I guess this would be whatever the players want it to be.  As I said, it's up to the individual players to figure out their own storylines....much like real life.  :)

I figure that we can put up a thread in the group section and all post a character bio there.  Then from there we all can write threads together using a tag on the title....something like [ToE] or something similar.  I'm not really looking to a GM here...so please, let's all discuss how we want this to work.

Because while I don't know if there will be any full non-con, I'm guessing there will certainly be situations of adultery and looked down upon age relationships (40 year old man, 18 year old girl).  That and the NC section of the site is a place where you can push almost any limits without worry of suddenly getting into something totally...Well extreme.

I personally am fine with Light and interested no matter what thread it goes, it's just NC is a safe place to hedge nearly all bets.

Yes....there would be a Town Sheriff....along with some Deputies. 

Someone can even be the Mayor if they want.  Town Doctor....Town Barber (Floyd?)/Salon......Pub Owner.....all sorts of things.....

Whoa. This got some interest!

Not wanting to try to replicate a past experience but in a previous game like this the GM did try to arrange events a little and steer things along when it was needed, suggesting character moves and such. Nothing too pushy, just enough guidance to keep the pot bubbling.

Can I make some suggestions please?

I think all the characters should start close to each other, certainly within the same neighbourhood, maybe on the same block. That way we can all bump into our neighbours and friends without some characters being miles away across town.

This means all characters need to be of a similar social class, simply because of the way town demographics go in our society. It could be a manual labour blue collar part of town or a clerical white collar part or a more upper class elite part. If we go for a blue collar area we could still have white collar characters who are maybe salesmen or execs passing through and staying at a motel or small boarding house etc.

So I think the first criteria for making the game seem more real is to fix a style and flavour of the neighbourhood and the characters should merge in with that in a beleivable way. The way the previous few posts are heading it looks like a blue collar area but not a run-down one. We're still on the right side of the tracks, just.

Another element I think that helps make the game glue together is to create relationships and character links that will help us focus. For example there could be a single mother living with her daughter. Across the street lives one of the town cops. The mom has the hots for the cop but the cop has the hots for her daughter and at night actually spies into her room from across the street.

Down the block is an auto repair shop. Two brothers run it one of whom is an ex-con and the cop always keeps an eye on them, trying to catch the ex-con out or trip him up. They have a young lad apprentice/pump jockey working there who is the boyfriend of the single mom's daughter... etc, etc...

So the characters get woven together into a spaghetti-ball of linked affairs and desires and sub-plots.

It takes a bit of pre-start up work but is worth the effort and is a lot more fun than A, B, C, and D living in a town and randomly bumping into each other.

The scenery of the town may need a bit of planning. Is there a beach? Some small docks? Maybe our neighbourhood consists of some houses, a corner store, an auto repair shop and a diner or pub. Perhaps there's a small motel on the beach road. A bit of geography combined with a really simple map and a few defined places of work (does our daughter do waitress work in the diner? Or serve drinks in the pub?) and so on... It is wise to limit who works where. If everyone chooses to be a pub owner or motel owner etc then everyone would each be spending their day at work and hardly meet! So limiting the workplaces to one or two to begin with might help that syndrome.

Just ideas, just tossing them out there. Feel free to disagree!

I liked Haibane's suggestions and I do want to include some of hers with what I had in mind which what will work (in my view).

- A suggestion from the gms for a character to go somehere - Love it - this ideally I think
could be like omens - giving you a sign or dreams (ideally integrated into role play).

eg a gms post could be minimal and like this:

"Skittering around on your toes while reaching for the can of corn on the supermarket shelf for some strange reason evoked a longing in you one to dance again, how long had it been ? you recall a flyer about a club opening .. why not check it out yo think to yourself (Then link to the club)"

Starting close to each other ? I like it it does help, but nothing too solid, perhaps a few hobbys
listed or social groups (sports / bars / gyms / witches coven etc) and you have to be a member of at least 2 (so implying you heard or know of another can be easy)

Living in the same hood / social class ? - I have an alternative idea... see more below

Those living close or Friends you have you being linked in your profile ? Yes .. optional but encouraged. ie many (But not all) character profiles have a hyperlink section to acquaintances / friends / enemies / anyone that evokes an emotional interest (good or bad). Those living close by
being a hyper-linked section in peoples profiles is more encouraged (and less likely to change that often)

Concerning social status or social classes... everyone's wants freedom and to be rich.

How about those that want to have wealthy characters are ones that have more conditions - rich characters effectively should always obey and gm decision or suggestions / omens. - these can also be direct in a pm - without role playing it - so a gm can say "finance this / build this in this suburb"
(effectively telling them to create a post with links etc which are relevant) and thats the end of it - rich characters who want to stay wealthy obey... ie they effectively are the "workers" for the gm making buildings (threads areas).- they don't do it - they find themselves out of luck concerning wealth / return to see their house trashed etc.

Poorer characters are under less obligation to do anything at all ... they are more free spirits

This might get confusing and easier for threads to get lost. Isn't it easier to have it all under one "roof" and then each person can label their home thread with their preferred tag (inside the thread, not the thread name)?

Agreed.  Too many threads  can kill an RP quickly.  Posting labels would be ideal.

Nods. The fewer threads the better. The more people in each thread the better too. I don't mean necessarily in the same scene but in the same locale. Its easier to keep track of events that way.

For example if there is a thread called THE PUB and 4 pairs of characters are each conducting a scene in there, they all use the same thread, even though they may be in different rooms.

Also, bear in mind that if the game reaches 1000 IC posts it can apply for its own Big Group Board. When that happens ALL threads get moved into the HIGHEST RATED category, so it might be worth starting every thread under the NC banner anyway (or BON if the consensus is that NC is a bit too far fetched for a quiet township type game).

Ok...so I know this was my idea.....but as I mentioned before, I don't want to GM this game.  I want everyone to determine their own stories.  Hence, I'm not big on the idea of anybody pointing anyone in a direction or telling them to do something.  However, I will take care of building the town, maps, maintaining the character bio thread, etc. 

As for threads....I agree with Haibane on the number of threads. I'm told the number of permanent threads is limited to 2 per player.  Anyway, I like the idea of having a Pub thread or a hospital thread or a game store thread.  Each one of these would be "owned" by the proprietor...while that person could have a "home" thread owned by the head of the house hold. 

Neighborhood:  The town itself is not a large place. I want to have different neighborhoods, each having their own characteristics.  The well off folks live in one neighborhood (perhaps on the water).  The middle class folks off in another. Etc and so forth.  Obviously the different businesses run by the characters would spread amongst the neighborhoods. The also widens the possibilities for businesses.  Ie a regular pub in one neighborhood...a wine bar/jazz club in another.

I am thinking that my housewife character will work as a part-time waitress.  If at the pub that has been previously discussed that would be nice, if not probably at some bar (the dirtier the better). 

I thought about her owning a bar, but don't see her caring enough to want to run a business.  Unless someone was interested in being her manager, while she plays waitress/bartender?  If she owned a bar it would be the seedy, biker bar type.

Ok....so here's a compromise for the location of the threads.  As mentioned, home base will be NC.  That's where we'll have the OOC and Character threads.  From there.....each individual house and business can establish their threads in any level they like.  Ie, if I want the Mayor's office to be in Light, the Haibane wants her home in NC, and Kate wants her home thread in Extreme.....that covers all of our bases.  A place for everything and everything in it's place. 

Then, I will establish a "Locations" thread in NC that will list everyone's home and business threads.  If they are outside of NC, there will be a notation like (L) for Light...(X) for Extreme. 

This way, we can all have what we want in the game and no one has to feel uncomfortable. If a home or business is in a category you don't want to go into.....then don't go there.

There's no reason for anyone to "bow out" because of content level.  The entire point of this game is that just like anyone can live anywhere they want....anyone can play in this game however they want.

Since you'll be the first resident of the apartment building, you can name the building/complex.  However, you only need to create a thread for your apartment.

Perhaps something like this:

The inside the first post....something like "Elliquiy Arms Apartments - Apartment 3C"

Obviously we can come up with a better name for the building....but that's what I'm thinking.

Then...I'll add that link to the Locations thread under your characters name.  Sort of like a phone book.

The issue with allowing some extreme threads is that if the game reaches 1000 posts and gets its own Big Board, all of the game content will be moved to the highest rating, so the entire game becomes extreme-rated.

Given that this is an everyday city story I am struggling to see what extreme content would be involved. Extreme only covers such subjects as watersports, scat, bestiality, very graphic violence, vore, necrophilia and the like.

Perhaps the players who want an extreme rating could say what subjects they intend to include and we may find that what people actually want to do isn't extreme at all (a common thing on E these days it seems).

i role play in extreme often - and there isnt many posts that actually have anything extreme in them. Some do - 90 percent dont.

A "Light" thread in an extreme group I dont think will offend anyone - and most do look at people ons and offs before trying to involve them in anything.

Because  if you write in extreme then you don't have any limits (within in the rules of elliquy) as to where you can go.I put alot of my rps in NC just because It might become NC. It's not that you're going to write in Extreme or NC , it's just that that might be were the story takes you.



Personally , When I start a roleplay I have an idea of where it's going to end up but I don't set it in stone. I adust for my partner wants.

I'm looking into the issue because if/when we get assigned a subforum, I don't think it would be the best idea to have the entire thing consigned to Extreme. 

But at the same time...I'm not sure that I want to limit people either.

However....If it's going to create an issue, I'm leaning towards cutting out the Extreme bits (animals, bathroom stuff....cannibalism - I draw the line at anything that far out there)

hey i think it may be easier if extreme was excluded - it is offensive to many - and we do have our own section for a reason.

This is a facinating idea  and i do wish it well. I think it sensible for me to pull out - but gosh guys enjoy it really is a facinating concept :)

Just to make things clear, I fully intend to create the owner of the local pub and create a thread for it.  Advance notice it will be NC rather than extreme(sorry folks not my thing lol).

And though I do intend this, should anyone feel the need or want to do so before me go right ahead.  I am rather busy this weekend so if you get ahead no worries.

I have a post on the first page about giving this game a shot, was just wondering if I was still able to throw up a character?

I would like to say that this is a game based on a town...  So what the people do in 'their' own home is none of anyone's business... If what goes on in your characters home is extreme then write 'contents of this thread are extreme' or 'read at your own risk' so that those not wanting to participate in the 'bad' acts do not get involved with them.  It is not the writers fault if they offend or cause uneasiness to others, they gave fair warning.

The other side of this is that, it is a living breathing 'town' you can't just say that people have a limit to what they are sexually into.  As far as you know your real neighbor could seem like a church going loon, but really love screwing goats.  That is all I really have to say on the matter.

Well...I'm still willing to let people construct their home threads where ever they so choose.  In fact, I've been encouraged to do just that....and worry about subforums later (when it's time for such things).  So, if people want to be extreme in their home threads....go for it. They will be labeled as such in the directory, which was the original plan.   For the rest of the players, if you're not into extreme....don't go into those people's houses. lol. 

Just remember....the concept here is that this is a medium sized town.  As SinXAzgard21 said....what people do in the privacy of their own homes is their own business.  The best part about this concept is that there is room for everyone....regardless of what kink level they're into.  Just remember that, as in real life....if you do something naughty in public, you're probably going to spend some time in the clink!   And if someone has a scene inside a business....just remember what section it's in and adhere to the rules. 

So basically....what I'm trying to say is that there is room in this town for everyone.  No one should feel like they have to "bow out" for whatever reason.  Just like you wouldn't bow out in real life.

Edit:  As I've been working on this and discussing it, I just want to remind people of something.  This is not a Role Playing game in the usual sense. There is no script, no plot arc.  What is being created is a background for us to play in.  Each of us creates our own plot arcs and story lines....as we do every day living our lives.  That is why we can't necessarily nail down which forum section this belongs in....because it can span any and all of them just as there are a myriad different people.  The town is a back drop.  What you do with your character is your business.
