Taming The Savage Lands (M for F)

At 14, he lied about his age to enlist in the king's army. At 16, with his incredible skill and devotion, and too many victories to count, he got the attention of the king himself. For over a decade, he served the king faithfully, sometimes as a bodyguard, sometimes as a general, and sometimes as an assassin. But one day, it all went wrong. A botched job left him injured. He might have still been able to serve the king yet, but the wise ruler insisted that, having given half his life and now part of his own body in service of the crown, it was time to make a life for himself. The king owed the man his life a thousand times over, and in addition to knowing him as a faithful servant, considered him a true friend. And so, in exchange for his loyal service, the king would grant him anything. Power, riches, the king would even hand him the crown itself through a wedding to his eldest daughter.

But the man wanted none of that. To serve the crown was all he knew. Yet he knew that if he asked for that directly, it was the one thing the king would not grant. So he asked for the Savage Lands.

A massive stretch of land that stood on the country's border, carved into the map like a scar. It was utterly inhospitable. If the harsh climate and unforgiving terrain didn't kill you, then the beasts and monsters that roamed the land would. The land was rich in natural resources that had to lay unclaimed, and it had great strategic value as it rendered attacks from neighboring kingdoms utterly impossible. Many had tried to gain a foothold there and failed, often losing their lives in the process. Yet if anyone could survive, or even thrive there, it was him.

And, as fate would have it, he won't be surviving alone. For upon his arrival in the lands, just as he's getting ready to go about the task of constructing his homestead, he encounters another human in a land where there were said to be none.

Much as he'd prefer to be alone, it's not an option. He'd been the greatest fighter in the kingdom and even he'd needed an army to escort him through. They're stuck together, at least until he can tame the lands enough to carve her a path to freedom.

YC's history is up to you. She could be an outcast, a fugitive, an escaped slave, or anything else that appeals to you.
