What's the general inclination of the 'Law and Justice Party'?  I know enough about politics not to assume the obvious answer is correct.  ;)

If you think "law and order" you are pretty much on the mark. Social conservative, anti abortion, anti gay rights (perhaps not to the point of homophobia but definitly against any legal recognition of same-sex partnerships). Not quite sure about their current economic policies, as it's been a while since I paid close attention to Polish politics.

Conservative, pro-Church and with quite narrow-minded interpretation of things like national pride etc. Also, they tend to accuse everyone who disagrees with them of being traitors or criminals...

They were running the government in the years 2005 - 2007 and it was a... weird period, with them doing a lot of controversial things, as well as managing to sour our relations with countries like Germany. Ever since they lost power, they've been in total opposition. After the presidential plane crash of 2010, they quickly started promoting crazy conspiracy theories of how the plane crash was an assasination. Lately, they were very vocally fighting against gender theory...

As for Duda himself, he tries to sell himself as a man of compromise... nevertheless, he was also advertised by the leader of L&J as "fervently Catholic". Duda himself said that his moral opinions were based on the opinions of the Polish Catholic Church. And he did say things like that he believed that the in vitro fertilization (which the Church condemns) was "mostly a scam" and that he wouldn't sign the European convention against domestic violence, as it supposedly contained "leftist gender ideas" and was a threat to Polish tradition...

Eh. I'm kind of worried what this new president will turn out to be like in practice... especially if L&J manages to win the coming parliamentary elections, too.

Is treason not a crime in Poland?

But anyway.  Football has finished for the summer and we stayed up.  And even finished above Sunderland.  Been drinking for hours.

Also, savvy play by Liverpool.  They realised that playing in Europe next year would mean finding their passports, getting their E111 up to date, booking airport parking, getting some Euros, and all that hassle.  So they heroically took a 6-1 hammering to guarantee they wouldn't have to bother with any of that.  Smart play, lads.  If there are any scousers on here: I'm laughing with you not at you.

That's why I couldn't reach my friend today... she was probably drinking too.

That's an apt comparison, I think.

A small story from yesterday that, I think, nicely shows the L&J mentality: the voting was supposed to end on 9 PM, but some time before that time, it was announced that it would last to 10.30 PM. The reason was an accident in one of the polling stations that caused that station to be closed down for some time. When it was announced, some people at the L&J were heard commenting that it's probably a sign of the government trying to fix the elections...  ::)

Overall, in the recent years, every time L&J lost elections, they suggested it was because of the voting being rigged...

yeah sounds like some sections of the tea party... mind you there are moderates who share a normal version of such opinions.
but the hard core ones... well they demanded the president present his "real" birth certificate... because some of them still think he's a Muslim from Africa. after 7 years >->

yeah... same folks think the military training exercise Jade Helm is a secret plot by obama to aid isis in an invasion of texas, which is somehow the last bastion of freedom alongside Wisconsin or something.

No I didn't make any of that shit up, and that is sad.

Well, our new president tries to present himself as a moderate conservative, a man who is going to respect other-minded people etc. On the other hand, the man he proposes as one of the advisors for his future office is a guy who openly claimed it would be beneficial to make Poland into a theocratic state... And, a few years ago, Duda himself supported a bill that would punish the doctors conducting in vitro fertilization with prison...

Well, we'll seen how Duda fares.

To be honest, the truth is that the current president, Komorowski, as well as the party he represents (Civic Platform) really had that defeat coming. CP has been running the government since 2007 and their rule was the time of stalling, annoying the public with making some unpopular without any social consultations, as well as general arrogance. When then came to power, they had a strong support of the public, as many people were extremely tired after the two-year period of Law & Justice government. So, CP could've done a lot of good things, riding on the goodwill they've had... but they completely squandered it. And they really were convinced they could stay in the power forever just by pointing out that L&J was even worse.

Well, they were wrong - people are so fed up with them right now that they *are* willing to vote the dreaded L&J just for there to be some change in the government. Heck, even some well-known LGBT activists chose to vote Duda in the presidential elections...

So, we'll see. If Duda sticks to his promises of being an open-minded president, if he won't push his personal beliefs too much and will manage not to aggravate our international partners, this change *could* be for the better. But if he sticks to the usual L&J political style and ideas, things could be... tiresome. And if L&J wins the parliamentary elections in autumn, then I'll really start worrying. In Poland, the president doesn't have that much political power - but if L&J manages to get the prime minister seat, then they'll have opportunities to cause a lot of damage...

Texans are utterly convinced the United States military is going to occupy their state and declare martial law.

I just...I can't even... What in the world is up your butt Texas? What possible reason would the Federal Government want to place Texas under martial law and use the U.S. Army as a police force there. So what if there's going to be a training exercise there, doesn't the American Army have the right to train in American territory? Would you feel better if they trained somewhere else like Colorado or Missouri?

I just don't understand why this is such a big deal. The Army NEEDS to hold exercises. And the biggest facepalm fact is that they believe the Army is gonna use empty Walmart stores for detaining "political dissidents".

Quick non-ranty version *takes a deep breath"

The US military needs to practice invading and securing hostile countries while protecting allied nations, but how do you practice that in a large scale battle? Especially if you need to cross other nations (some friendly, some neutral, some hostile) quickly to get to the country you are currently at war with?
This isn't just for the generals to play war games, this is to practice a long term campaign for the regular grunts, specialists, and other military forces, this includes things such as practicing practical logistics in the field instead of in theory on paper, or a tablet. How to establish a detention center for POW's, or storm a building (such as the wal-mart)

They can't exactly borrow canada or japan to practice a real world campaign training. Though I could see japan or south korea giving north korea a heart attack. ^,^

So they use a region of the US, and use states as the countries on the campaign map. Also giving them funny and related names. Such as "Lone Star People's Republic" for Texas.

The Southwest was chosen as the practice field for jade helm because the conditions such as heat and terrain, is the closest to what the troops would encounter on a middle-eastern or north African campaign, which is where most of the US's battles tends to take place this century.

Texas has become a breeding ground for conspiracy theories and right wing parinoia since 2008, in large part because crazy paranoid conservatives have chosen to move to Texas in large numbers because it clams to be the last bastion of "true conservative values" and of course they spread parinoia like a plauge.

Very well put, Ironwolf.  The kind of ironic thing is that all those ultra-paranoid types would be the first ones to decide that we needed to drop troops in a Middle Eastern or North African campaign theater.

This news is... stunning, to be frank. I really didn't know that many people in the US were so distrustful of their government...

In other news - something small that catched my attention when watching TV during dinner:

http://tvnwarszawa.tvn24.pl/informacje,news,wskoczyli-na-wybieg-dla-niedzwiedzi-bezmyslne-zachowanie,169561.html

What you're seeing on the photos is a guy in the Warsaw zoo. Who jumped across the protective fence and moat and approached a *bear*.

And then, according to the zoo workers, the guy actually *hit* the bear...

*facepalms*

It's more that we concentrate all of our crazy in a single dense region, and Texas has always been a sort of independent-minded place....they are the only state that was technically an independent sovereign nation before we annexed them, after all.

Ironwolf85

it's also of note that with the exception of texas every deeply conservative state is so addicted to government aid that if they actually followed through with either the welfare reforms, or succession threats a lot of their own population would die, major industries would shrink or close, and their state governments would collapse.

Actually they already do train in Colorado.

I live about 45 miles from both the Air Force Academy, Ft. Carson, and NORAD.

The Air Force and Army do all sorts of training exercises throughout the year.  Some even involve live ammo.  Though usually the news will forewarn everyone in the surrounding areas what's happening in case they hear loud and repeated 'booming' sounds.

In Colorado, that sort of thing might cause some alarm.  In Texas, that usually just makes 'em call up the neighbors to ask why they weren't invited.

Actually, I've met a number of intelligent, interesting, open-minded folks from Texas so I wouldn't write that place off as an immortal conservative bastion.

My theory is that State is actually currently purple, with the blue mostly covered by a thinning layer of obnoxiously loud red.  Texas has a lot of tech and a relatively high level of education.  That's a recipe for shifting to the left, inevitably, imho.  I figure it will go solidly blue in about 10, maybe 15 years when the life support systems keeping alive the Old White Guys In Power (tm) finally give out.
