So...I'm newish to Instagram. It's been a hot minute since I've used it, but I have started using it again the last two months. One thing I can't figure out is how to share things from other people into My Story. I have plenty of people saying "Click the paper airplane icon to share this to your story" that I would like to share, but I can't. I click it and the share sheet comes up, but only for me to send it to specific people. I've googled a number of times and there should be a "Add to Story" option, but there isn't. I know the post has to be public, but I've tried every recent post in my feed and even the ones that tell me to share it don't work.

My phone and app are all up to date.

Any advice? Google and Instagram are not helping.

Thanks,
Jag

The issue is the second part. I have no option to add to my story. On any post whatsoever. Even people who tell me share because their post is public, I do not have that option. I can only send to specific people.

The only thing that I am seeing about the issue is either to, a) log out then wait a few seconds then log back in or b) uninstall the app and wait 5 minutes before reinstalling it(just make sure your phone backed up). The last resort would be to send a help ticket to the people of Instagram.

I have an iPhone and it's on my app. If you don't mind sharing what phone company(Apple, Android and the like) you're with, I can try to search and find a much more accurate solution for you.

Went ahead and tried both of those, Cliffspiracy. Did the log out first, waited a good ten minutes or more, still not working. Uninstalled, waited another ten minutes or so, reinstalled, still not working.

I have an iphone with the app too, though the sharing isn't working on my laptop browser either (though I'm not sure if browsers have that option since I don't see the little airplane anywhere on there). I'm on Cricket Wireless.

I may have to file a ticket. Ugh...

Thank you for the help though! If you do come across anything, please let me know! ^_^

Hey, no problem!

I don't think it's available for the laptop because I have the app on my laptop and it doesn't appear on it.

You're not the only one having that problem though as many others are having the same problem, for some reason but I think they're in other countries or so. Plus, most are saying it's a glitch in the system, too. I hope they see your help ticket though. <3

But again, you're welcome and I'll be sure to let you if I am able to find anything else helpful. ^^

As far as I can tell what you are doing should work. It does for me. Sounds like a problem on their end!

Instagram is doing A/B testing.

Either you get an "Add to story" at the top when you click the airplane or you click on the "Send To" button and click "Your Story" at the top. Then hit Send.

I don’t even have that other option.

I went ahead and contacted Instagram.

Can you see your own name in the list of people you can "send to"? There's a search box on top.

Jag

I searched and found myself, sent it, but I just DMed myself a message. So now I can talk with myself. >_<

Some server side flag has been disabled on your account. They do random stuff like this and I doubt you'd get a response from them. It'll get enabled on its own when they do some clean up. I am pretty sure the option will be available if you create a new account.

Jag

I’m not creating a new account again. >_<

It’ll either work eventually or it won’t. Oh well.

Thank you for the help though!

You can create an account just for testing. That'll confirm if it's a server side issue specific to your current account.

Jag

Good point.

Hopped off my account and logged in via my facebook instead. Added a few people and went to the post I wanted to share. Still not working. So it’s not my account.

Your Instagram and Facebook accounts could be linked in the back end even if you didn't explicitly link them via the app. Facebook's privacy policies are iffy that way. You should create a brand new Instagram account with a burner email (or an email that Facebook does not know about) for a real test.

Jag

They are already completely different emails. I have one with my real name for business and Facebook and a private one (which my Instagram is attached to).

If you use Instagram on the same mobile device as your Facebook, Facebook knows your private Instagram email address and it may suggest friends from your Facebook account even if you never linked them.

The Instagram story issue should fix itself on its own.

Is their account and post private?  I know that can affect sharing sometimes.

Never mind, I see you confirmed they are.  Ugh, that has to be so frustrating!  Have you looked in your own Story settings to see if there's an option for sharing that maybe they have disabled on their account or something?
