It's more for when I leave PM's as that's how I know that I have got them. Other than that I tend to check the threads I am in.

I am anybody's for a hug and a cup of tea. If you give me a plate of buscuits I'll love you forever!

I feel stupid because I thought I knew a lot about how computers and the internet work. These issues show me that I don't really know anything about how the internet works. Thanks for keeping us updated and for all that you do to keep the site going.

Email is by far the most ridiculously complex commonly used protocol.

For DNS, I have to setup ptr records, mx records, spf records, dkim records, and dmarc records.

I maintain a special account with Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft, and most major ISPs.

Software-wise, I use Dovecot, Postfix, OpenDKIM, ClamAV and Spamassassin.

All told, the work I put into e-mail is roughly on par with everything else I do combined.

Is everything back to normal? I still don't receive any notification...

AurelieCatena

How do we "reenable notifications"?

I never disabled them and all my threads still have the "Unnotify" button. However, I do not receive any notification yet. Should I unnotify and renotify them all?

To reenable post notifications:

Go to the "Profile" menu, then click on "Account Settings"

There click on the orange "Modify Profile" button and click on "Notifications"

At the bottom of the box it has the words "For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:" and then a drop down menu, which likely says "Nothing at All".

From that menu, choose any of the other three options, and then press the blue "Save Settings" button.

To reenable notification for PMs, go back to the orange "Modify Profile"  button and choose "Personal Messaging".

The fourth line down says:

"Notify by email every time you receive a personal message:" followed by a drop down menu that likely says "Never".

Click on the menu and pick "Always" unless you only want notification on PMs from buddies.

Then click the blue "Change profile" button again

You're done then.

AurelieCatena

Thanks! I had only found the PM notification settings. Hopefully everything will work correctly now.

Will probably just provide straight links to them >_>

hahahah I've been here a year and I still haven't figured out how to label my PMs. Not that I have a need to.
"One thing you who had secure or happy childhoods should understand about those of us who did not, we who control our feelings, who avoid conflicts at all costs or seem to seek them, who are hypersensitive, self-critical, compulsive, workaholic, and above all survivors, we're not that way from perversity. And we cannot just relax and let it go. We've learned to cope in ways you never had to." ~Author, Piers Anthony

Hey I have to ask a tangential question: when we change over will it be possible to put an "Ignore" button next to the thread notify button so that when our character dies, we can hit ignore and not have the thread pop up in "Show new replies to your post"?

Are we ok to re-enable Gmail notifications now or should we wait a while?

(Thank you, btw.)

Vekseid

I generally hesitate to write changes to the schema directly (and that requires one) unless I can convince the SMF developers personally to make the same change. This has happened, and I got a near consensus for my userthread/userboard proposals to make that happen. I don't know if it's being implemented in future SMF revisions, however, because it is rather drastic.

To be fair, it's better than the reaction I got from the MyBB or phpBB folks.

Some people already have, I just need the rampup to be a bit gradual so Senderscore and friends don't freak out.

I think it could be done by just changing the php/html (and the sql within it). You shouldn't need to change the main database structure. I can think of one way but it's probably as un-optimized as you can get. You're going to have a select statement that compares dates between the last post in one table and the date you've logged in on another.. probably, as well as determining if there have been new posts in that time (likely using a view or temporary table?). So if you set up an ignore button (within a small form) in the PHP and have it add a NOT IN('this thread id') for every thread that you clicked 'ignore' on, it would eliminate it from the query results in the future. It is just, over time it would add up to some ridiculously huge list of threads not to look for. But.. it should work. And somebody would almost certainly click it by accident, so there should be something to reverse the process.

[Edit] And I thought of something else. Instead of just adding to the query, you could add 2 tables. One for ids of the threads that meet the criteria of appearing on the 'show new replies to your posts' list, and ones to be ignored. That way you could just query the tables without having a huge query building up. It would mean changing the database though. Just some ideas.

Several of said tables already exist. Unfortunately, they all horribly designed - I can't add it to any of them without having it affect something else (you choose to ignore a topic, now it's marked permanently read/unread/you're getting notifications for it/whatever), so I need to make yet another one. They were written back in the day when MyISAM was pretty much the only database engine so avoiding table locks was more important than making sense.

My logical inclination when coding this, however, would be just to fix that entire mess in one go, rather than adding to a mess that I desperately wanted to see cleaned up before I started on the new CMS.

AmberStarfire

Just the new tables could be InnoDB, but I can understanding wanting to re-organise things.

Are you switching over to a newer version of SMF or are you working on a customised version? (that's if you don't mind me asking)

Vekseid

Imagine 2.1 will get released before I get the new CMS polished enough for this place. Blue Moon may be running it several months beforehand, simply because the private conversation system is what I have gotten the most done on and it's what most people use BMR for.

yes, I did this, still nothing. I chose "only replies", now I'm trying the "replies and moderation"...let's see how it would be.

AurelieCatena

It works perfectly now. Thanks to Vek and all those who helped him.

Sao

I received a new pm and didn't get any notification before I decided to change to  "replies and moderation".

If by this

QuoteYou should get a notification for this though.

you meant I'd receive a notification of this thread then I still didn't...but I didn't subscribe to the thread. I'll do it now, to see if I get any luck.
