I tried making eyes with a nib of a pen, but they still come out too big. And I have trouble with placing the dots in the right place...

Oniya

The advantage of a sewing needle (or straight-pin) is that the tip is finer than a pen-point, and the shaft is easier to see around.  With a pen, the plastic part obscures the very tip when you're trying to get it juuuust so.

Eyes are probably one of the most difficult things to do. But also the most rewarding. Half-decent eyes will make your models look so much better.

Beorning

I've been at the local GW shop and I examined the minis they have on their game tables. Ha! They actually don't paint the eyes. Cheaters...

Seriously speaking, though, I'm considering abstaining from making the eyes, too. I think I'll go back to the minis I've already done and paint the eyes over with the skin colour. Even skin-coloured eyes will look better that those blots of ink I end up doing...

Anyway: I picked up another bunch of minis today. It was a big package today, with six Sisters wielding specialist weapons, as well as a Penitent Engine (which looks extra-complicated... it really should come with some sort of assembly guide). Now, I only need to pick up another squad of ordinary Sisters, a second Superior, a bunch of Seraphim and the bare-bones version of my planned army will be collected!

Okay, I have another setting question, as I can't find an answer for in the books (yet)...

What kind of high-level technology exists in the Imperium? Are there any computers? Calculators? Radio? Interplanetary communication? TV?

karvick

For what I understand, data slates are not the different from our tablet computers, maybe with less funtionality or more. Computers do exist. Most of the interfaces seem to be holographic in nature.

I though they called their radios Vox?

If so then I assume they must have their own versions of radioplays like we used to have.

I wish this was still a thing.

That... actually looks pretty interesting. Thanks, O :)

Now, back to the tech, people!  ;D

Quite a lot of different kinds, though the focus is somewhat different to how we have it.

Are there any computers?

Cogitators, frequently seen in the presence of tech priests.

Light incense to appease the machine spirit within
Intone the ritual of awakening
Press the power switch
If the machine does not awaken, strike the first rune of blessing upon the casing and check the connection leads at the rear

etc etc

Quote from: Beorning on December 18, 2014, 10:45:30 AM
Calculators?

Probably, but likely incorporated into dataslates, which would be along the lines of the tablets we have today.

Quote from: Beorning on December 18, 2014, 10:45:30 AM
Radio?

Vox, both civilian and military

Quote from: Beorning on December 18, 2014, 10:45:30 AM
Interplanetary communication?

Astropathic, not technological

Quote from: Beorning on December 18, 2014, 10:45:30 AM
TV?

Pict screens.

Okay, thanks...

Another question came to me today when I was at work: you guys have mentioned that the worlds in the Imperium can be very different from each other. But, on the other hand... they can't be *completely* different, right? Overall, the lives of Imperium citizens are described as full of drudgery, with the Imperium promoting ignorance etc.. Also, all of the people in the Imperium seem to be technophobic. So... it means that there are no planets in the Imperium that are, say, democratic utopias full of technological wonders and of happy people... Right?

HairyHeretic

In theory there could be, but it's unlikely. And there's a reason for the Imperiums outlook on technology

Yeah. Part of the grimdark atmosphere 40K has is that many of the terrible and fascist things they do are actually the best option available. Technophobia and technical ignorance are a direct cultural descendant of the Robot War that almost wiped out humanity, and there's no reason it couldn't happen again. Knowledge of Chaos beyond 'they exist and they are bad' is actually dangerous because it gives Chaos a way in to control you. You should actually fear the alien, because every single bunch out there really does want to kill, eat, enslave, torture, corrupt, and/or brainwash you.

After reading the book "First and Only" I wondered about this too. The thing is, democracys do exit in the Imperium but the are heavily class based (Shown in the book Nightbringer) and in many cases corrupt. I like to think of 40k as a darker version of Traveller which had ever type of planet, alien race and tech level you could think of. Remember, 40k is so good for being able to say "this exists because..."

Beorning

So, there are democracies in the Imperium? Interesting... Still, a planet with a well-educated, technologically-apt populace would be impossible, right? The Imperium couldn't possibly tolerate them...

BTW. As Chaos was mentioned: it's mentioned that the existence of Chaos, the daemons etc. was a secret. But how can this be squared with interplanetary Black Crusades going on? Surely the Imperium's population would notice them?

Oniya

They would notice them as 'something bad', that presumably the Imperium was going to protect them from.  Unless the Imperium decided that nuking the planet from orbit was the only way to be sure.

Their existence isn't a secret. Detailed knowledge about them is. Remember that one of the core creeds is 'Fear the Mutant, The Alien, The Heretic'. Hard to do that if you don't know what a heretic is or what counts as heresy. The Imperial populace knows Chaos exists and demons exist, but they're like the boogeyman under your bed - a vague yet terrible threat you pray against and hope you never meet, but don't actually know anything about beyond that.

karvick

yeah, it can get weird when you try to figure out who does and who does not know about the Grey Knights since they are meant to be a big secret and kill many who find out about them.

HairyHeretic

GW has stepped back a bit from that over the years.

The early fluff had any regiment that fought Chaos destroyed afterwards, and Marines that faced deamons were mindscrubbed back to drooling idiocy. After the first War of Armageddon the entire planetary population was sterilised and isolated til they died, and then the planet repopulated from other worlds.

It was that behaviour that REALLY ticked the Space Wolves off, and they started escorting Guard transports elsewhere to make sure they didn't suffer 'accidents' en route to their next warzone. IIRC that's reference in the Space Wolves and Grey Knights novels, and ended up with the Inquisition sending a war fleet to Fenris. I'll let you figure out just how well that worked out for them ;)

Yah. Saying that the Space Wolves and the Ordos Malleus don't get along is like saying Horus and the Emperor had a mild disagreement. And in typical Space Viking fashion, the Wolves extend that attitude to the other two branches of the Inquisition who had nothing to do with the whole thing, and who cheerfully return that lack of regard. So everyone hates everyone and we're all cool.

The Inquisition and the Space Wolves hate each other? Ha! How about a Space Wolf x Sister of Battle romantic pairing? Just throwing a plot bunny out there...  :-)

And speaking of this, how about a Techpriest x his female Servitor?
