I really can't wait for The Hobbit.
Movie magic was painfully absent from cinemas after Return of the King.
We're getting some back.

Was it? I was considering going to see it but am worried as a fan of the original books if it would disappoint in the ways those adaptations often do. I'm still on the fence about if I want to make it out to the theater this weekend.

There is something about Billy Connelly's voice that makes me grin.. and then he jokes..and I can't help but at least giggle.. (and usually more)

Is on the fence about John Carter. I've read the original books and seen how bad almost all movie adaptions are.  Might go see it at the Dollar Theater when they get it.

I do want see the new batman and The Secret World of Arrietty. I love almost all of Studio Chibil's films.

The Titans 2, wasn't impressed at all by the bad acting and cheap special effects in the first one. Not going to bother seeing the second one.

John Carter
The Avengers
Brave
Arrietty
Abraham Lincoln (I have to since I own the book)
The Expendables 2 (because face it, Bruce Willis is hot)
The Hobbit

I don't know how I missed G.I. Joe. Definitely a must see.

We are going to see John Carter this weekend. Is it worth seeing it in 3D?

Aiden

No, but I think 3-d movies overrated and not worth the hike in price.

But the movie is great and I recommended watching John Carter.

Jag

I detest the 3-d. Mostly because it gives me headaches and my eyes can't handle it. I've seen one 3D movie and I will never do it again. It's not worth the money and it's a waste of money because of my eyes.

I'm the same way, because of my prescription glasses - when I put on 3-D goggles over them, the cross polarization pretty much blocks out all the light, making it impossible to see anything.

In my opinion, no movie is worth seeing in 3d. I've never had anyluck enjoying them. Adding a 2nd pair of glasses to the pair I already HAVE to wear isn't going to add to my enjoyment.

I suggest seeing it in the 'normal' format though. It had a very nice.. pulp feel to it I thought. I throughly enjoyed it.

^Bloody hell...that is one awesomely cut trailer. Note how epic and inspiring it seems at the beginning...and then slowly becomes claustrophic and nightmarish towards the end.

Go see John Carter! Speaking as a fan of the original works it is more than worth it. I wish all of my pulp heroes got the same treatment. To quote myself from another site:

QuoteI think that it opens poorly. Much of the first ~20 minutes felt really rushed, rough draft. Not saying that they weren't good scenes or good ideas, but the writing seemed off, the effects kind of stumbled, etc.

After that, I loved it. This is probably the best adventure film I have seen in recent memory (possibly since my childhood). It is also the sole film based on pulp sources that manages to move me in the same way its source material does. It's beautiful, wonderful, savage, and highly entertaining. Also, let's reiterate that penultimate point: they manage to authentically capture a piece of the savage nature of Barsoom in a PG-13 film made by Disney.

Moreover the creators have explicitly stayed away from certain tropes that I just despise in modern filmaking. That coupled with relative paucity of planetary romance in modern pop-culture make the movie feel very fresh and different from the usual fare.

^LOL - I do like Coulson's 'just another day at the office' face in that.

Total Recall reboot - Obviously, Colin Farrell's going to do a better job than Arnold without even trying too hard. But...from what I've seen and heard so far, there doesn't seem to be any visit to Mars in this, so I'm guessing there must be some major plot changes in this version.

Of course Colson is awesome.  A)  He IS a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, like Natasha, so he likely knows what she can do.  B) He's worked with her before.  C) He's probably had similar training, if not quite as badass as she is.

I mean, Fury keeps him around for a reason, and I don't think it's because he looks good in a suit.

Margin Call - no one delivers dry iced lines like Jeremy Irons*, and the prospect of seeing him as the battered CEO of a Manhattan company treading bogus waters, knowing that he will end up helping to destroy their trademark but possibly getting a big reward in hard cash, is a real treat.

I'm also very much looking forward to Blonde with Naomi Watts. It should come around by the end of the year, and could well give her a deserved Oscar. Joyce Carol Oates is a really great writer (worthy of a Nobel prize, plus she should have been much more visible on film & tv) and Watts was born to play Monroe.

And, of course, The Hobbit I and The Dark Knight Rises - but everybody's looking to those aren't we?

*Pierce Brosnan comes close in inspired moments, but Jeremy has a much darker tone. He, Tony Leung and Penelope Cruz should do something with Almodovar as director.

It's the eyebrows. Some people can out-act Jeremy Irons. No one can out-act the tag team of Jeremy Irons and Jeremy Irons' eyebrows.

We have a small, horribly underused theatre where I live that mostly shows art films for $4. I usually prefer to give my money to them instead of feeding the Hollywood machine. Anything else I want to see, I usually pirate.

I think it says much that the creepiest, most unsettling vampire to ever grace the screen still remains - IMO - Orlok from Nosferatu (which is 90 years old now!)

Jag

Count Orlok is, in my opinion, the best vampire to grace the screens. Lestat is a whiny bitch, Angel is king of the dust bunny vampires, and Edward is...uh...a disco ball. Though I do love Lestat and Angel. Edward, however, is still a disco ball.

Mostly that. It's hard to pin down something like that when so many people have played him and there have been so many variations to the story.

At least add Bela Lugosi's Dracula in there somewhere. If you gotta pick one, go with the original, and possibly barring Christopher Lee's Hammer Dracula, the best.

Yes, but you know there's some anal-retentive accountant over at 20th Century Fox Studios arguing against an "R" rating because it won't make as much money as a film rated "PG-13".

Ok so I might be a little late to the game on this one but I just recently watched The Raid : Redemption and that was one of the best action films I have seen in years. If you like action or martial arts flicks and you haven't seen it you definitely owe it to yourself to check this movie out. It features heavy use of the Indonesian martial art of Silat.

Immortal Flame

There have been so many good movies this year, which is saying something when that's not always the case.  Sherlock Holmes was probably my favorite of the year so far, though Avengers was pretty epic, as well.  I'm looking forward to checking out the Hobbit next!  I have a mild trepidation about their splitting it up into three movies though.  This could potentionally make for some wonderful details in the movie that otherwise might have been left out, but it could also turn into nothing more than Hollywood seeking the next cash cow :/  I'm hoping that the movie-makers just remember to put quality and content ahead of cash!

Wallflower20

So, last year around the first of December I was bumbling around YouTube, and I came across a Hobbit trailer. I love the LOTR books and the prequil is my favorite of all, so I'd been keeping tabs on when it was expected, so seeing this for the first time, I got really stoked. So, I click it... And it says "Christmas Day." Just that. Of course, I assume Christmas Day 2011, and I'm rushing downstairs telling everyone we're going to the movies Christmas day and all that jazz. I thought about how it was so strange because surely they would have had the trailer on television, because I think it's one of the most anticipated movies of the century (for me, it definitely is.. been waiting for the release date since The Return of the King came out). About a week later, and no ads on tv, I get that it's supposed to be for 2012. I think that's the saddest I've ever been about a movie.

Hope this little anecdote is appropriate for here. It came to mind and decided I'd like to share.

Now I realise this might not be the most popular opinion to have on the internet, but the Total Recall "remake" was pretty good and people should consider checking it out. Just sayin'.

Oh and this may not technically be 2012 hype but it was supposed to come out this year before a studio decision to delay it, so it kind of counts. Besides it's the greatest thing of all time so whatevs:

Major points. I hadn't seen that. That looks pretty amazing; lots of big names. I also want to check out the remake of Total Recall; the main actor was interviewed on a talk show and piqued my interest.

The Man With The Iron Fists - Trailer (HD)

Quentin Tarantino needs to stop making movies.  That guy hasn't made anything decent since Pulp Fiction.

I am looking forward to this family friendly fare, though:

He hasn't made many films, actually.  He tends to just green light 'em.  He produces, doesn't really direct.

If any of you haven't seen Argo yet, go.

Right now.

Turn off the computer and go.

No joke, the best film I've seen all year. The tension in this film was indescribable. Even though you know the outcome going in, you are still kept on the edge of your seat until the very end. Ben Affleck did an amazing job as a director.

For those of us who are elderly enough to remember the events in Iran in 1979, the film was particularly compelling.
"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle, when the sun comes up, you'd better be running."  Sir Roger Bannister

It's...interesting. I can't call it a -bad- movie, but I also can't remember another time when I sat in a theater and said "whoever this is intended for, it is so not me" which is weird, cause I like the kind of kung-fu-sploitation chop-sockey genre it emulates.

Call me odd, but am I the only one who's rather sick of a lot of these CGI films? It just seems like they've been pumping out an excess of them in recent years.

Two reasons, first is that they're some what easier to do than traditional animation (the models and scenery don't need to be redrawn every frame), second the 'rules' of what can be done in them (like character death and other things of that nature) are still not fully cemented in the publics brain.  Yet.

Don't like it?  Oh we'll.

I prefer hand drawn.I always considered hand drawn animation to be more expressive and atmospheric in general.

I can't comment quite yet, as I havn't seen it, but yeah; I'm assuming a gathering of genre and medium tropes. You've got some very heavy pulp and wuxia influences, alongside some Western influences, all which are very similar types of story telling. All revolving around kung fu and Quentin Tarentino's idea of action, which I imagine is going to get odd. Very fast. Also, I did not like Lucy Liu as a cast; of all the professional wuxia actresses you could get (Zhang Ziyi, but I think she doesn't do much anymore or Michelle Yoeh, for example) and they choose Lucy Liu.

Ah, I kind of interpreted this comment to be about CGI vs. practical effects rather than entirely CG animated films. I think the latter is nice and the former is ruining cinema.

Two quick clarifications, and again I'm not saying it is a bad movie because of this, but I think they contribute to why I personally didn't like it: 1) this is not a Tarantino action film. It's written by RZA and Eli Roth and entirely directed by RZA. They asked Tarantino to put his name to it as kind of a stamp of approval, but he had no involvement with any aspect of the film-making. If you go in expecting a Tarantino movie you will be disappointed. 2) this is not really a wuxia film as the term is commonly used (though it probably falls under the broadest definition of the term) but don't expect wuxia tropes. It's definately a kung-fu movie, but far more in the 1970s style (when, at least in the PRC, wuxia fiction was suppressed) and honestly pulls a lot more from the Western film and Japanese influences than any Chinese ones. Again, I am sure that all appeals to someone, and I really can't say I didn't enjoy the sit, but I think that I was expecting something different than I got. In the final analysis its definitely a movie I am glad I saw, but wish I had seen on Netflix or something.

Also I adore Zhang Ziyi! (and I think she has a few upcoming films, not sure as to genre however)

So, I quite enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph, but I was wondering something:

This was the song that played over the end credits:
Owl City - When Can I See You Again w/Lyrics

Listen, and tell me - doesn't it sound like the singer just had a one-night stand and is singing to the other person? Kind of a strange song to use as the signature track of a kid's movie. ;D

Though on reflection, it may have been intentional, since they also used the innuendo-riddled 'Shut Up And Drive'.
