I have to add, however, to a point that consortium made:

David Luiz (my Man of the Match in Brazil's two previous games) really let Brazil down in a big way.  Consortium was absolutely right; Luiz played more like a forward than a defender, rushing up to try to create opportunities, and leaving giant holes behind him as a result.  Brazil seemed completely incapable of marking anyone, affording Muller and company all the space they needed to get into position.

My speculation is that Scolari's plan was to come out striking hard and put Germany off-balance; however, Fred and Hulk simply lack Neymar's speed and prowress, and Brazil was completely unprepared for Germany's counterattack.  Brazil simply could not, or would not, adapt to being down, and that was what I think ultimately led to their downfall.

Luiz simply reverted to type.

Gary Neville once infamous described Luiz as playing like as if he was being controlled by 'a 10-year-old on a PlayStation' and that's what we got today. Luiz is clearly a talented player; hardworking, brave, strong and powerful with the ability to deliver dangerous long balls and go on charging runs that most defenders lack. The issue is that he lacks discipline and gets rushes of blood to the head. In other positions taking the low percentage option can be an asset because the rewards outweigh the risk; if an attacking midfielder shoots from range rather than passes to a teammate then the risk of it not paying off is simply a missed chance, the reward is a goal. But if a defender does something equally risky then the equation goes the other way; the reward is simply to break up and attack or bring the ball out of defence quicker, the risk is a goal being conceded.

Mourinho isn't the most popular of managers and people often tend to criticise what he's done. But this World Cup has proven him right on at least two grounds. First his decision to drop Casillas for Real Madrid (something Ancelotti has kept for all but cup games... and Casillas nearly cost them the Champion's League) was pretty much vindicated by yet another pair of inept Casillas performances in Spain's first two matches where he was a large part of them going out. And now his decision to primarily use Luiz as a midfielder rather than a defender (unless he really has to) has been given a lot of support by this match.

On paper Luiz would actually be pretty effective as a deep lying midfielder. His workrate and strength means he'd harry opponents to win the ball back... and while his discipline may be limited in midfield he can balance that out with eagerness more than a defender can. It also plays to his strengths in that he would get more chances to go on those driving runs and deliver those deep balls. The question is whether he'll actually ever be given the time in that position to develop his knowledge there; being a defender who occasionally cameo's further up the pitch isn't really the way to do it.

I think his issues may end up being exacerbated by being at PSG. While PSG may be a top team with a large number of exceptionally talented players, Ligue 1 isn't. There's PSG, a bit behind them there's Monaco, below them there's about four teams and then there's a lot of dross. Put simply he won't have to be that disciplined to still do a good job as a defender there and considering that most teams look to sit back and hold off PSG he'll be even more encouraged to start breaking forward and leaving gaps behind. Moreover, despite his price tag he's not going to be the leader of the defence there and thus have to take on more responsibility... for the moment that role belongs squarely with Thiago Silva. That may offer the one silver lining... as things stand PSG have both the present of the Brazilian defence (Silva) and the future (Marquinos) on the books, which means Luiz will get to play with them week-in, week-out and hopefully develop a good understanding.

Brazil lost the game before it had even started with all the Neymar hats and holding up his shirt during the anthem.

How can you allow a team as big and proud as Brazil to admit so openly they're a one man team!? He's out injured for roughly 4 weeks, the way they were carrying on was if he had died for goodness sake! They had a psychiatrist in to help them get over his loss! Seriously, wtf!? Allow the players to feel like a key part is missing and they are beaten mentally before starting. They gave themselves an excuse to lose before the game had started, the likes of David Luiz and Marcelo had given up long before half time.

Don't get me wrong, it's a shame for Neymar to miss out, but all the fuss is like no other nation has ever had a player miss out thanks to an injury before! Utter madness.

Let's hope that Brazil learns from this. The time of Pele and when just skill and ability will win a game are over. Teamwork is the way to play football in the 21st century, and now Brazil needs to bring in a coach that understands what it means to put in a team effort to win a championship, and come onto Russia with a team that can win, not just a player.

Unbelievable. In my whole life of football, I've never seen anything like it. Most people I know are saying similar.

You can point to Brazil being without two of their best players, but still, even then it shouldn't be a 7-1 scoreline. Not in a World Cup semi final. I mean this is Brazil - hadn't lost competitively at home since 1975!

I agree with Consortium that Germany were actually pretty average. It's just that Brazil completely froze, their defence and midfield that protected them were complete headless chickens. They did not do their research (many had argued that Scolari is tactically outdated - more of a father-figure type of a manager, rather than one playing with an up to date system) - Algeria, Ghana and, a week or so before the WC, Cameroon showed how you play against this Germany side. YOU DO NOT GIVE THEM SPACE. And Brazil gave them plenty of it. Unlike Chile, Germany had the all-round quality to punish them.

Well it was awful that Brazil lost Neymar to such an injury, but as I understand it they should not have lost the other one at all (though I wasn't really watching that time).  They didn't show a lot of connection through their midfield in the first half.

At the beginning of the second, it looked like they might have actually learned a few tricks from the German offense.  They started passing the ball back from far forward a bit more, and looking to penetrate on the wings better.  Though by then it would have taken quite a lot to catch up, and the German goalie was really in top form -- and maybe a bit lucky himself, even.  I have to say he looked pretty dashing in this game  ;)

I didn't want Brazil to sweep everything anyway...  But maybe Germany can be kinda fun to watch.

That was weird, I got recalled at 05:30 this morning (yay IT job), fixed the fault by 06:10 so I thought I'd watch a bit of the game before sneaking some bed time before my alarm went off at 07:00. Between seeing the first goal online and getting the video feed running (yay SBS TV) the score went from 0-1 to 0-3. It was amazing, didn't actually manage to get back to bed.

kylie

Giggles.  Yeah, if you caught that ten minute stretch where three goals popped up wham-bang, then you had a lot of the "shock" psychology of that game anyway...

But granted with that much energy, it can be hard to leave!  Hehe.

Nico

I hope that The Netherlands will make it tonight. ;D Would be a kick ass final.

Rex Pacis

I'm personally hoping for a little Messi magic to keep Latin America alive but I was reading up on Argentina's history with Germany and it ain't looking too good. And they still gotta get past Netherlands. C'mon Lio!

For real-z though...

We lost 7-1 in the World Cup Semilfinals... Allow me to console myself with our five world cup wins, two of which were in the last five World Cups, Four Confederation Cup wins, silver and bronze Olympic medals....

At first I was like "Hey, USA didn't play that bad." Then I saw the bottom and was like, "Oh, yeah."

Despite yesterday, I still have a ton of respect for the Seleção. Just sayin'.

Same here. I was just more disappointed that the game turned out that way. Guess it can happen to the greats too.

See its okay El Salvador. Still hold the world cup record for getting our ass whooped. 10-1 :')

I actually was disappointed myself. Okay, Germany won. But the game itself was pretty boring, when you ask me.

I had hoped for some more suspense, you know? Not such an easy win. Those are never fun to watch, and cheering gets old fast, when overdone.

I think that gets somewhat lost in the hyperbole.

Yes, Brazil were awful last night and yes, the defeat went beyond embarrassing before the first half was over. But they still made it to the semi-final and have a chance of officially coming third. Even with Neymar and Silva I'm not sure many would view this as a vintage world cup team... to compare it to the last time Scolari was in charge, there aren't exactly many who compare to Roberto Carlos, Cafu or Gilberto Silva in this squad, let alone the majesty of the three R's. Losing in the semi-final isn't a bad result by any means... at worst it's about par for course and arguably it's slightly better than some expected. When you consider the quality of teams that didn't make the semi-final... notably Spain but one could also list Italy, Uruguay and Belgium... losing at this stage isn't the end of the world for Brazil. The manner of the defeat is an embarrassment. Being defeated isn't.

ChicagoOkie

I agree wholly. It's a great feeling knowing that your team kicked ass, but it really isn't much fun to watch.

Kinda like that year the New England Patriots went 19-1.  No shame in making it to the big dance, even if you don't get the Homecoming Crown.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens in today's game.  Last time I checked, the oddsmakers had Argentina by a very slim margin, but I think this is one that really could very easily go either way.

CastorTroy

I'm still shocked by the Brazil result. Seriously has to be one of the most shocking, if not THE, football result ever. Totally lost for words.

The fact that pornhub had to issue a statement for people to stop posting "Brazillians get fucked by german soccer team" and having a video of the match is just hilarious.

Dashenka

Brazil were 11 individuals who all thought they were the best player and Germany was a team. The team always wins.
