So....Sci-Fi Pathfinder, anyone? (Interest Check)

So I'm thinking of running a sci-fi Pathfinder game, after just watching Jupiter Ascending. The plot/setting will have nothing to do with the movie-well, their might be a couple places that seem similar-ruins of Jupiter, anyone?

The idea is that magic and technology is gonna get a little bit mixed together, where Wizards are throwing fireballs on floating spacecraft platforms and soldiers pack magic guns that fire freezing bullets. I figure the party will start out 3rd level, on a transport ship that doesn't pack any firepower, though the party can certainly upgrade from "rusty shitbox" to "rusty shitbox with rusty shitguns!" A balanced party would be nice, too.

Current Rule Changes: On firearms, Firearms only hit Touch AC in the first range increment. Beyond that, they must strike Normal AC. I like the feel of 'point-blank shots', so I'm going with this. Firearms use the "Guns Everywhere" rule, meaning all guns and ammo cost 10% of normal price.

Current players:
ExisD as Astrid, Fetchling Swashbuckler
D12 as Mera Nova, the Gillman Witch with Ringo, the Blue Star Octopus Familiar
Rikka as Maud, the Bugbear Bloodrager
and Three Slots Open!

well, firearms only hit touch AC in their first range increment, and like all ranged weapons, suffer penalties for shooting past that, plus penalties for shooting into melee, or from cover, plus reload times... the only class that can pull off firearms in pathfinder is the gunslinger, and even they have to invest pretty heavy. If you take away the touh AC, they actually become worse than crossbows.

And crossbows look really silly in sci-fi

Angie

My information said the first five. If it's only the first range increment, then I can live with it by just making the rooms really god damn big.

Well, it's space, and as Carl Sagan tells us, the universe is infinite... so, make your rooms as big as you like!  ;D

Early Firearms (ala muskets, flintlocks, stuff slingers normally use in Golarion) are first Range Increment. Advanced firearms (ala assault rifles, revolvers. etc) use first five.

So a better house rule might be that all firearms are considered primitive for rule purposes.  ;D

Chulanowa

Oh yes, and interest here - so long as we have our selection of races and classes.  ;D So many "nothing but human and elves! only!" games out there...

A lot of core race only games end up with everyone choosing human or elf. Sometimes half-elf or halfling, but those are rarer.

Angie

I agree with Darkling, I will set even advanced firearms to only use touch against the first range increment.

As for races: All races are allowed. And I mean ALL. Hell, wanna be a Space Orc? Go for it.

Since we've got a few people kickin' around, I will say this: Firearms are under the "Guns Everywhere" rule, meaning the actual cost for them is 10% of the normal list price. Additionally, I plan on starting you guys at 3rd level, with a rusty shitbox transport ship. The plot will be you guys are deep in debt in order to pay off said rusty shitbox, and are heading to an unknown planet that's reported to have several artifacts on it, which would allow you guys to easily pay off the debt and have a pretty sweet little sum left over. Of course, considering this is Pathfinder...it ain't gonna be that easy.

As for race, I'm trying to decide between Suli, Dahmpire, Fetchling, and Shabti Swashbuckler(Picaroon).

I know that sort of messes up the monstrous theme everyone else seems to be going for, but I haven't found a monster race I really like yet. I could do half-orc as well maybe.

You might be able to reskin Ogre as Minotaur.

One more race I was thinking of is also the Kasatha. Probably a ninja or rogue to make use to all of those arms.

D12

Bugbears & Minotaurs have not been stated as playable races to my knowledge.

And just speaking as someone who has worked with the Race Builder, 20RP is probably on the upper end of what I'd be comfortable playing with. Most core races come in somewhere between 10 and 15, Svirfnblin come in at 23.
Drow Nobles are the highest I know of in the non-homebrew category at a truly obscene 41; Gnolls are the lowest I know of at a rather sad 6.

Ogres are actually in the advanced Race Guide... they're pretty high up on the race point scale though (23 RP). Can't find anything for minotaur besides the bestiary entry (and they're dumb as rocks) and the Midgard campaign setting (agile as a rock and still kinda dumb)

For Gillmen, well, since I did see Jupiter Ascending, I'm going to allow for the purchase of emergency water filled suits, colloquially called "Dunk Tanks", 1 for 10 gp.

Also, you have your water tank to sleep in. It's not incredibly hard in my mind to make a container full of water, so go for it. Additionally, food and water on your ship won't be something you need to keep track of-assume really good water recyclers and crates upon crates of soy, which, while unappetizing, will at least keep you going. Resupply on world is what will be the problem.

And speaking of money-same system, just replace "pieces" with "credits" (So, copper credits, silver credits, gold credits, and platinum credits).

Well I have a bunch of mechanics done and a bit for backstory.

Unfortunately, her build won't really come online until level 6 or 7, stupid needing way too many feats for two weapon fighting and ranged combat. Each level from will be a huge benefit for her though.

Astrid

Current Backstory: Astrid was born with two particular talents, keeping herself out of sight and being good in a fight. The first was helped by the abilities that all Fetchlings have and the later was definitely made more difficult by the fact that she's sort of an idiot. While physically talented she chose to train in a rather showy combat style that's very hard to properly use.

She also never managed to get the distinction between you could fight and you should fight down. This resulted in her getting kicked out of many different towns and cities until she wound up on the 'rusty shitbox' where someone else could tell her when she should shoot someone's face off or scare them enough to make them wet themselves.

Angie

I will say one thing: if you plan on doing a class or race that isn't Core, PM me first so I can look it over. Mostly just because I wanna see what you're doing. I'm not familiar with absolutely everything and I appreciate the chance to talk your choices over with you.

A blue ring octopus's base DEX is 21, he'd be a mad crazy gun-fighter :P
Although I'm not exactly certain how to get him Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Pistols). I don't know of any feats that grant your familiar a feat.
Alas, Ringo the watch-octopus shall have to remain unarmed.

Can I take Evolved Familiar (Gills) to re-fluff it to Evolved Familiar (Lungs) so that my octopus becomes amphibious?

Don't say that....  Then it just won't be any fun for anyone else as I use Tippy-esque tricks...

In all seriousness I wouldn't do that.  I usually try to play to the same overall level as the rest of the group.  Only exceptions are usually when I just find something really fun and it's usually weaker.  I was more interested in things that may be thematically inappropriate in your mind for class selection.

Maud
Background: Maud comes from a tribe of bugbears that worships one of the greatest of the Great Old Ones, Azathoth. They pay the great power homage by frequently communing with him in strange droning hymns and praises, and by providing him with sentient sacrifices which they obtain through raids which they occasional conduct on the fringes of civilized space.  It was through these unfortunate victims, of bugbear raids, that Maud learned about a culture rich in life and opportunities beyond that of his enigmatic and savage tribe.  Maud wanted to go and experience this kind of life rather than living day in and day out the tribe’s dreary existence which would eventually lead to insanity.  No, the young bugbear would not have any of that, and planned carefully for his escape

He got his chance during a raid on a salvage ship, whose crew thought it would make a good buck by wandering into one of the Rim Sectors, and find anything worth retrieving.   They were dead wrong, and the ship and all hands were easily overpowered by the raiding bugbears.  During the commotion, Maud made his way to one of the ship's escape pods, having learned how to use one from one the hapless sacrificial victims before his life was offered by the will of Azathoth.  He intended to use the lifeboat to get to civilized space, and with its built-in homing device would get him there in a few days. Unfortunately things did not go the way Maud planned it.  When the escape pod launched, Maud was not safely secured and had an accident which left him pretty in a comatose state.  When he finally woke up he found himself aboard the "rusty shitbox", nursed back to health after remaining adrift in space for nearly four weeks.

Regarding a ship name; we should probably decide on a Captain.
I volunteer Mera, in the sense that she's a Black Marketeer and needs some muscle (and people who can stay off ship for more than 24 hours without their skin splitting open)

Also; I brainstormed a whole bunch of stuff regarding "Gillmen in Space" Not much is really different, made by Aboleths to explore space for them etc etc one of which is the idea that Gillman-made spacecraft are referred to as 'Steam Ships' because the artificial atmosphere is practically dripping wet with humidity and heat (so the Gillmen on board don't have to worry about drying out).

I think it would be amusing if our spaceship was a perpetual sauna 'cause.

I'm thinking Mera will be some manner of scientist / drug cook so she's got a fair splattering of the Knowledge skills. Heavy focus on Nature with the idea she's a biologist.

I like the idea that Gillmen were created by the Aboleth to explore the universe because the Aboleth; being giant aquatic creatures, are ill-built for space travel. I like to think all Gillmen are kinda; "Yeah, we know why we exist. All this existentialism is kind of silly; now tell me about your planet? Are their oceans?" takes notes.

Just this insular culture that's 'we exist for a reason' they've got cartels and mafias and soldiers and scientists but they all serve the same semi-silent masters.

Plus Aboleth totally look like something you'd find at the bottom of some dark alien ocean psychically spreading its thoughts out into the void:

Both will work for ship repairs. Craft: Starships will allow you to forge new parts while Knowledge Engineering would allow for mid-flight 'jury rigging'. Both skills can do repairs if you have the parts-it's just getting the parts that's the problem!

When the Vigos Protectorate found itself on the losing end of a bloody occupation they turned to robotics for the answer: synthetics to take roles on the spearhead of commando raids and jungle patrols that wouldn't add to the statistics on the vid reports back home.  A highly advanced culture, Vigos innovated a new bio-synthetic hybrid frame easily capable of meeting mission parameters, but were unable to create the complicated cortex needed for intricate missions and scenarios that a golem couldn't handle.  They approached Dr. Bomei, a prodigy in the field, to complete the project: however, as he explained, the issue at heart was the conflict between the necessary intelligence and the stranglehold the military insisted be in place on any free will. What they wanted were slaves, and he refused to participate - until the Protectorate made it clear refusing wasn't an option.

The eRN Project was the culmination of Bomei's work: sentient, living cyborgs able to reason, learn, adapt and specialize - both mentally and physically.  As he predicted, however, the limiting circuits were shackles around their minds, enforcing loyalty through pain, lobotomy or even death should the eRN's even consider deviating from orders.  Their success ensured their slavery would continue: within a few years the rebellion on Santos III had been broken and the Protectorate planned to expand the project for use on other troublesome civilian populations.

Dr. Bomei wasn't ready to accept his part in the tragedy, however.  In a daring act of espionage he permanently sabotaged the limiting circuits in the guise of an upgrade.  It was a one-way mission, one he knew there was no hope of escaping from once the eRN's were loose, but his creations surprised him: their first act of freedom was self sacrifice, assaulting the base where Bomei was held and extracting him from the Protectorate's control.  The mission cost them heavily, leaving the survivors scattered across space, and earned them a reputation as half-psychopathic monsters a breath from losing control and murdering their allies.

Obviously, none of this is included in the official version of the story, and 251 is rarely inclined to dispute it.  Hunted and on her own, an intimidating reputation is sometimes the best defense available.

A bio-synthetic android developed by the Vigos Protectorate two decades ago, ERN-251 - Erin to the meat, or 251 to those inclined to show respect - was one of a couple thousand commandos developed by the military to destroy a blighted cult infecting the peaceful jungle world of Santos III.  Erin herself was among the first models; she served on the ground before training as a drop ship pilot.  She doesn't discuss Santos III much, but the androids were known to be bloodthirsty and merciless.

When the blight was defeated and peace restored the ERN's became increasingly difficult to control: violence was hardwired into their systems and they failed to adapt to an end to hostilities.  There are even concerns that the adaptive matrices may have assimilated aspects of the demon worshipers even as the robots destroyed them.  After several attempts to remedy the problem the entire series was regretfully slated for demolition, but not soon enough: in a vicious act of terrorism they turned upon the Vigos en masse, killing thousands - including the scientists from the project who could have deactivated or corrected them.  The Protectorate fleet annihilated most of the ERN's, but a few have scattered to the edges of civilization, working with anyone foolish or desperate enough to trust a psychopathic computer one glitch away from murdering the entire crew.

The good news is that 251 brings skills vital to the daily operation of the ship: she is an expert pilot and mechanic that never needs to sleep.  Her adaptive technology - a system of nanites capable of re-building or enhancing sections of her body as needed - and skill at arms have also come in handy, as has her experience in the wild.  All of which probably makes putting up with her worthwhile; fortunately the grudge she holds against most meat seems to have diminished around the crew as they've proven both useful and trustworthy.

Of course, that could just be a way to lower your guard.

Magic Items
Remote Interface Synapse: This headpiece projects a display band and connects to the wearer's neural pathways, allowing the user a hands free link to any nearby electronic device to provide a remote control, command console, or simply as a portable screen.  (1000g, as Message, Continuous)

Defensive Energy Matrix: These bracers create a barrier of focused magical energy to protect the wearer.  Highly effective in combat, their intense power usage results in a high recharge time.  (800g, Shield, 2/day)

Neat! And that reminds me, I need to give you all Commlinks...you need some way of keeping in contact while exploring the planet's surface!

Thanks, glad you like her!  Let me know if there's anything I ought to tweak.

And yeah, I looked at the Tech gear but the prices are a bit yikes....

You guys have radios for free, that I reserve the right to make malfunction at any point. ERN-251's has the advantage of never malfunctioning and always going through, even to malfunctioning units thanks to the magic.

OOC is up! https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=223998.0

This seems like a ridiculously fun party to explore with.

Given the limitations on races (technically none, but with a preferred max of 20 race points) I'm thinking either a Ghoran (19 RP) Shabti (13 RP) Sorceror might be fun to do. I'd probably go with the Hyperborean bloodline regardless of race; since the party has a Bloodrager, I'd probably focus on protective and damage spells. Alternatively, I can focus on spells for combat control, with just a couple of damage spells mixed in.

If that doesn't work for the party... I'd probably go with a Human Wizard and focus on Item Creation feats. In the end, I'm fairly flexible in what I want to play, and I generally try not to step into the spotlight of other characters. If the others would prefer a Rogue or Cleric, I can do that, too.

I'll give you the last slot if you don't mess around-make a character and get it to me now.

Wait, there's only one slot left? I thought there were three... Give me... One hour, max, and I'll have a character sheet done.

ForestMagi

Mythweavers may not have saved anything I put in for some reason, but here's the sheet: The Ghoran Sorcerer

Other than gear and backstory, it's finished. I'm working on the background stuff now, gear to come later. Name will probably change when I think of something better.
