In need of a good anti-virus program

The one I'm currently using is driving me nuts. AVG v8. The earlier versions were great but this one and my laptop don't mix. I shouldn't have to reboot my computer after every update. It shouldn't start scanning at random times and completely slow down my computer. I had it set to scan at a set time. I also scan it manually at regular intervals. Still not good enough. The main program isn't even aware that it is running a scan, so the only way to stop the scan is to reboot.  ???

Anyone know of another good free antivirus program?
