Introduction
Los Angeles, October 21, 2029. After Judgment Day on July 24, 2004, the world became a stark place to live in. It’s been twenty-five years since the fateful day that Skynet came online. An entire generation grew up knowing nothing but ‘war against the machine’. What remains of mankind has effectively organized itself into what's known as 'The Resistance'. Lead by war veterans and former military, mankind struggles to survive in the metro tunnels and sewer systems of destroyed cities. At the top of command is John Conner, a name known by all, but a man who is rarely seen in public.

You are a member of Resistance Cell 89; a cell of roughly a dozen people, located in downtown Los Angeles. Your commander, Jonathan Washington, receives his orders from Command who plans out Conner’s orders and delivers them to the resistance cell that can handle them best. Interaction with other resistance cells, or humans in general, is rare.

Food is scavenged by whatever wild animals can be killed or plants gathered. The tin cans and MRE’s that were available at the start of the war are long since gone. There are still plenty of humans living outside the metropolises, but it’s becoming increasingly more difficult stay undetected. Skynet is relentless and continues to hunt down humans, putting them at work in labor camps or using them for its dark experiments, killing those who are too weak, or too rebellious.

There has been an increased interest from Skynet in Los Angeles lately, but so far Command has been unable to determine the reason. Between your daily struggle for survival and the missions you’re tasked with, you have little time left to build up a living, yet that’s the only thing that keeps you going; the hope that every day you make it through will be one day closer to the final victory over the machines. In the past years several major battles have been won, but the war is far from over, and Skynet is more vindictive than ever before.

Game information
Expected knowledge
Considering the topic title got your interest I assume that you have a general knowledge of Terminator. I’m following the timeline set out by the movies and thus ignoring the alternative timeline that was created in The Sarah Conner Chronicles. If you want to sign up then I expect that you’ve seen at least the last two movies, but it’d help if you’ve also watched the first two movies and that you’ve seen The Sarah Conner Chronicles. Although I won’t be using that alternative timeline, there was a lot of background information in there involving scenes that played in the future which give a good impression of what post-apocalyptic life is like. In fact, Salvation and TSCC inspired me to start this game.

Story background
I want a realistic game that’s set in the Terminator franchise with about four to five people besides myself. I have a lot of ideas for a game filled with action, drama, story development and character progression. I've worked out a storyboard for the game and came up with an exciting storyline for us to follow that'll read like a book. It contains several nice plot twists and will keep the story engaging until the end.

The idea of playing in a post-apocalyptic world has appealed to me for a long time now, and I’d love to see the story develop as a group game. The story starts three years before John Conner is assassinated and Kate Brewster sends the T-850 back in time, as portrayed in Terminator 3. However, there will be no contact at any moment with John Conner or any of the characters from the movies, series, or novels. We only play our own created characters.

Base
The people of Resistance Cell 89 (RC 89) lives in an abandoned metro tunnel between two stations. They have almost no contact with other cells, unless Command orchestrates a co-op mission. The power in the city stopped functioning years ago and electricity is hard to come by. There is a simple latrine available that needs to get cleaned out on a daily basis. Everybody has his own mattress to sleep on, but there are no separate bedrooms available. The commander has a small 'office', which consists out of a room with a table, a chair, a radio, several maps and a flashlight that hangs from the ceiling to offer some illumination. The 'kitchen' consists out of nothing more but a refurbished gas stove that now runs on pretty much everything that burns, and that's set up against the wall of the tunnel. The canteen is a couple of half-broken chairs and wobbly tables.

The most used exits are four nearby emergency exits, which are located on opposite sides of the tunnel. The tunnel exits are well-disguised with debris and protected with a booby-trap, which serves as an early warning signal when Skynet found the base. The north end of the tunnel collapsed after a bombardment from Skynet a decade ago and is inaccessible. The south end is booby-trapped with mines and other explosives. The resistance members know the path through the minefield, but rarely use this exit since it’s easy to trigger an unwanted explosion.

The base has two German Shepherds who act as guard dogs and who help detect Terminators. The general facilities are very primitive; there is no power, no flowing water, and no gas for heating. Most of the world has gone back to the Dark Ages due to the initial EMP’s from the nukes and the world breaking down during the twenty-five years that followed. Instead, the members use an old diesel generator when they need power, gather rain water in jerry cans which they have to bring down to the base every day for water consumption, and they use fire for heating, cooking, etc.

Weapons and ammunition are still produced in factories, but are hard to come by. Most of the factories are destroyed by Skynet. Most of the ones that are still in operation are located in basements and involve a lot of manual labor, rather than the streamlined production facilities they used to be.

Characters have some personal belongings, but in general nothing more than you can carry with you in a backpack. RC 89 had to relocate several times in the past and you have to be ready to flee in a moment’s notice. The resistance members never possess more than they can bring with them when they’re in a hurry. The last time the cell had to relocate was four months ago, and it caused the cell to lose about half of its number --either captured or killed-- in a Terminator ambush.

Characters
There are two kinds of characters in RC 89; the NPC’s and the player characters. The player characters have something exceptional that sets them apart from the NPC’s. This allows them to go on missions while the NPC’s take care of the mundane tasks and keep the base running (i.e. food/ water gathering, getting necessary supplies, washing/ mending clothes, etc.). The NPC’s consist out of people who are either too young, too old, or too injured to fight. They live in the resistance cell because they either have nowhere else to go or because they want to do their part in winning the war. In general, they’re also much safer in the resistance than trying to make a living by themselves. This split between NPC’s and player characters allows the players to focus on the more fun and exciting parts of the story without the story becoming inconsistent and illogical. The NPC’s will all receive a name and picture, but they won’t play a major role and mostly do their thing in the background.

Considering the fact that mankind has been at war for the past twenty-five years and considering that the average life expectancy went down by quite a bit, it makes sense that we play ‘young’ characters between the ages of sixteen to thirty. In short; apart from the stories they heard our characters know nothing about what life used to be before Judgment Day. Some of the NPC's are old enough to know what life before Judgment Day was, but the player characters grew up in a world where all they know is the war against the machines, everything else is a bedtime story.

It makes sense that the average human is illiterate due to a lack of schools for the past twenty-five years, but I’ll leave the amount of schooling your character had up to yourself. Please also keep in mind that in a post-apocalyptic world you generally don’t have the required amount of food to build up muscle to bodybuilder proportions. Famine is more rule than exception and although you don’t need to make a skinny character either, obese or really muscled characters wouldn’t make for a very realistic game. In short; I prefer to see girl/boy-next-door images over pictures of photo models/ actors.

The character sheet is pretty straight forward. I prefer to keep these short and let everybody get to know each other in the game itself. One thing I did add was ‘Specialty’, with this you can think of your character being a mechanic, dog handler, explosive expert, etc. All characters are assumed to be physically fit and able to handle various weapons, basic first aid, and pretty much everything a soldier can do. Please select a skill you think will be useful during the game. Feel free to ask me for advice if you need inspiration with this part.

General rules
General rules
Use common sense. When you get shot expect it to slow you down or possibly even disable you for the rest of the game. Some medical care will be available, but don’t expect much more than basic first aid. Trained surgeons are long gone and the ones still around are only available to Command. We're only a small resistance cell with minimal facilities.

We won’t use dices, but instead stick to freeform. I don’t want to see over the top action though, it needs to be realistic. When you see a Terminator your best bet of survival is by hiding rather than fighting. Skynet has the superior numbers, communication, and fire power, and only human ingenuity prevented the extinction of mankind. Don't expect things to get easy, instead expect that you'll have to be resourceful.

If I ask you to change something to protect the continuity of the game, then please do so. I use this as a last resort, but in my experience I found that usually everybody has to fix something at one time or another, myself included. (If you see me mess up then don’t hesitate to point it out! After all, I’m only human.)

I’m looking for people who can post at least twice a week. More is okay, but not less. If you have a vacation or sickness interrupting your posting then please post about it in the OOC thread so we know you’re inactive for a while and don’t have to wait for you. In addition, I prefer to see people write between 125 to 2000 words with each update so we can have some actual story progression with each post. If you tend to write less than six sentences per update then please look for another game.

I’m open to allow one person to play a reprogrammed Terminator, but not at the start of the game. In fact, this is one of the missions I have in mind to play out ICly. As the game progresses I may allow people to play an additional character, but with the storyline I have in mind a single character for each player will probably work best. Either way we'll start with a single character until the game is past its introduction phase.

The game will be hosted in Extreme Small Groups. Although I expect smut to take place, the game is more about surviving Skynet than getting hot and heavy with one another. I expect some of the combat scenes to become very intense and that's my main reason for putting it in Extreme.

Non-Player Characters

Name: Jonathan Washington (aka Commander or Jon, depending on the situation)
Played by: Caitlin
Age: 59
Personality traits: Calculated, serious, loyal, intelligent, trustworthy, authoritative, initiative, social, confident
Specialty: Commander of Resistance Cell 89
Cell member since (weeks/ months/ years): 14 years
Biography:
Jonathan was born and raised in a small village in Oklahoma. He never pictured himself becoming a farmer like his dad was, and once he turned eighteen he signed up for the navy. At the age of twenty-four he had advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was on shore leave, visiting his parental home, when the nukes hit and obliterated most of the world.

He joined a local militia in the immediate aftermath, but once it became apparent that more was going on that what met the eye, he made his way to California, wanting to join up with his squadron at Camp Pendleton. The trip took him several weeks, only to find out that it had all been for nothing once he reached his destination. The base had taken a direct hit from a nuke and was completely gone.

Eventually he managed to get in contact with the remains of the military. He was assigned to a squad in Los Angeles, which later became Resistance Cell 46, or RC 46. He supported this cell until it was ambushed by Skynet, either killing or capturing most of the resistance members. Jon was one of two people who managed to get away. After updating Command on the situation they resigned him to RC 89. Another four years later the leader of RC 89 was captured, and Jon, being the highest ranking member, led the resistance cell ever since.

Four months ago Skynet located their previous base of operations. The ambush killed over half his people and this was a major psychological blow to him. In addition, Jon busted his knee during his escape and although the wound healed, he'll never be able to run, or even walk, again. Without a surgeon available he's forced to walk with a limp leg and a cane for the rest of his life.

Name: Dorothy Griswold
Played by: Caitlin
Age: 42
Personality traits: Skittish, submissive, kind, pacifistic, empathic, paranoid
Specialty: Cook
Cell member since (weeks/ months/ years): 7 years
Biography:
Dorothy was seventeen years old when the world changed overnight. Up until then she had been an average student, enjoying her high school life. Due to her plain looks she wasn't a popular girl, but at the time she held a steady relationship with a boy who she loved very much. Unlike her, however, he couldn't find a shelter after the initial strike and he wandered around the city, exposing himself to the fallout radiation. She saw him only once after she left the safety of the shelter and didn't recognize him at first. Most of his hair had fallen out, his body was covered in sickly looking ulcers and the once healthy muscle tone was replaced by scrawny limbs. The image had left a lasting impression on her, and although it wasn't the worst thing she had seen after Skynet attacked, it was the worst thing she recalled.

Dorothy managed to hook up with other survivors, living from day to day for several years to come until she could join a resistance cell. Without much in the use of practical skills, she became a cook, cleaning lady, and first aid giver. Although her combat skills were less than impressive she turned into the backbone that kept her resistance cell running. While the warriors were out to fight, she'd take care of any and all duties that needed to be done to keep everybody alive.

As Skynet became more vindicative and inventive in exterminating mankind, she moved to different resistance cells several times. She joined RC 89 seven years ago, after Jon rescued her from the basement of a collapsed building. Although Skynet's attacked had killed or mortally wounded all the other cell members, she was fortune enough to sustain only minor scratches. The emotional impact, however, was severe and occasionally she still suffers from nightmares. She's afraid that there will be a repeat of what happened.

Name: Brad Arlington (aka Rat Boy)
Played by: Caitlin
Age: 17
Personality traits: Kind, slow-minded, cheerful, empathic, loyal
Specialty: Gatherer
Cell member since (weeks/ months/ years): 6 years
Biography:
Although Brad's mother was protected from the immediate impact of the nukes on Judgment Day, she was exposed to a high dose of radiation in the weeks that followed. Due to the radiation poisoning at the age of nine she grew up as a smaller than average woman, regularly suffering from illnesses. During her pregnancy food was hard to find and she was malnourished as a result. These two facts combined caused Brad to be born with a low IQ.

Brad never learned who his father was. He lost his mother at the age of eleven when a Terminator killed her. A member of RC 89 found him three weeks later while the boy was scavenging for food. His mental condition became apparent soon, but despite the loss of his mother he was a cheerful young lad. Some argued that he was too dumb to realize what had happened, but although he was slow-minded it was things like this that upset him greatly.

Despite his low IQ it turned out that he had a big talent. He can find any item you're looking in the trashed world and can usually bring it to you the same day you request for it. Although he'll never be a good soldier, his unique talent has been a big support to the resistance cell. His ability to sniff out the useful items between the trash earned him the nickname 'Rat Boy'. It's a name that he proudly wears and that he prefers over his first name, since that reminds him of his mother. Any reminder of his mother tends to drive him to tears and it's considered very cruel in RC 89 to talk about her with him. Other then that it's hard to bring his upbeat mood down. He's often the first person who tries to cheer people up when they're feeling down and he does everything for those who he considers to be his friends, no matter what the risk to his own life is.

Player Characters

Name: Esther Vermeer
Played by: Caitlin
Age: 20
Personality traits: Creative, curious, intelligent, rebellious, affectionate, clumsy
Specialty: Computer sciences
Cell member since (weeks/ months/ years): 3 months
Biography:
Esther was born five years after the nukes scorched the surface of the planet. Her parents had been on vacation in the Rocky Mountains when Skynet attacked, and afterwards they were stuck in the States. Originating from The Netherlands, they wanted to go back to Europe, but considering the lack of transportation and the fact that the situation there was just as bad -if not worse- they decided to stay in the United States.

Her father was a brilliant programmer, while her mother was a gifted data analyst. Being short on talented personnel, the military offered them a safe place to stay in one of the underground data facilities where they joined other programmers in an attempt to battle Skynet.

As such Esther was lucky to receive a better education than most. She learned to write her first program at the age of six and it was clear that she had inherited her parents mathematical talents. She grew up in an environment that fought Skynet with every digital tooth and nail, and because of that she learned a lot about Terminator software.

When she was seventeen years old she lost both her parents in a raid from Skynet when it discovered the underground base. In an instant she lost her home and all that was familiar to her. Most of the people she knew were rounded up and put to work in the labor camps. She escaped, however, and after several hard weeks she managed to get back in touch with Command. To this day she still doesn't know what became of her parents, and there is a small chance that they're both still alive.

Command assigned Esther to Resistance Cell 89 three months ago. The cell had lost its previous computer specialist and they required her expertise on a mission. With the recent increase in Skynet activity, Command decided to keep her in RC 89 for the time being. Although she was born and raised in the United States, she picked up enough Dutch from her parents to occasionally slip into the language, especially when she's under a lot of stress.

Please submit a character sheet if you're interested in joining this game.

In a week from now I'll judge all the character sheets and announce which characters are accepted. I'm not accepting on a first come, first serve basis, but instead I hope to see a variety of unique, but believable characters. Please check the NPC/ PC spoilers for an example of possible characters. The biographies don't need to be super detailed, details can be filled in during the game with flashbacks or characters telling about their past.

Caitlin

I updated the subject title to better clarify what the game is about. If anybody has questions about the game then feel free to ask.

Robelwell202

Any chance of playing a reprogrammed 'friendly' T-800 chassis?

Caitlin

Yeah, that option is open. ^_^

Like I said in the general rules, I'm open to letting 1 person play a reprogrammed Terminator, but not that the start of the game. I want to make this one of the missions and handle it ICly. At that point one of the players is free to play with the reprogrammed terminator, it's one of the plot lines I have in mind and it'll form an integral part of the overall storyline.

I want to handle the story in Chapters and this is part of chapter 3, so pretty early on in the game. People will have a lot of freedom to play out their own sub plots and storylines too, but I do intend to follow an overall storyline. :-)

If you'd like to play the reprogrammed Terminator you could start with a normal character and have that character die later on, at which point you'll take over the Terminator and continue to play with that char in the game. If you're open for that then just submit two character sheets.

Robelwell202

That sounds like a plan.  I'll for a character concept, and submit my character sheets tomorrow.  You want one for the character that'll eventually die, and one for the chassis?

Also, just to let you know, I'm familiar with the first two flicks, but any past that I'm fairly vague on.  I've seen the third, with the killer-woman terminator, but not the last one with Christian Bale.  And, I've never seen the 'Sarah Connor Chronicles'.  Hopefully, this is enough.

Thanks!

Yup, one character sheet for both!

I can definitely recommend watching the last Terminator movie as well, it gives a very good impression of what the game will be like since it plays in the post apocalyptic era. TSCC is optional to watch, if you're a fan of Terminator then I can really recommend it and especially season 2 features several post apocalyptic scenes that are nice to watch, but it's okay to skip TSCC. (The series is only 2 seasons by the way.)

By the way, you'll probably get to play with the T850 model (featured in Terminator 3), it looks exactly the same as the T800 (featured in Terminator 1 & 2) on the outside, but it has better hardware on the inside. I haven't made up my mind about that yet, but it's only a minor detail anyway.

In here preferably, that way other people can also see which characters they get to play with. :-)

There is one other person working on a character sheet as well, but I haven't heard back from her yet.

The T-800 looks fine, age could be the build date though. I'm looking forward to seeing your other character. :-)

Baalborn87

Very interested in this.

Name: Anthony Davis "Patches" (He patches up engines you see  ;D )
Played by: Baalborn
Age: 17
Personality traits: Shy, quiet, focused but thoughtful, caring, not easily shocked by severe injuries.
Specialty: Mechanic
Cell member since (weeks/ months/ years): 4 years (ish)
Biography: Anthony was rather lucky (or as lucky as you can be living with murderous death bots around). In the fact that both his father and mother survived "Judgement Day". His father was a sergeant in the national guard and his mother a EMT (paramedic). Contacts of his father let him know of the unauthorised missile launches which allowed him to escape with Anthony's mother (his then fiancé).
After the "bombs" fell, Anthony's mother and father joined up with other survivors (both civilian and military) where their respective skills were in demand. As time went on and the human survivors war for survival became a full blown war against Skynet, Anthony's parents married and he was born.
Growing up in  the for lack of a better word "rebel" camp, his parents trained him to survive the harsh new world. His father taught him survival skills and small arms, where as his mother taught him first aid and basic medical care and other members of the group helped him learn other useful skills. It was in these lessons that he discovered an almost natural affinity with machines and all things mechanical. Sadly when he was 13. A Skynet hunter/killer group discovered the encampment and almost all were killed including his mother and father, who died defending to the last.
Striking out on his own, thanks to his fathers teachings he was able to stay hidden. When a skirmish between some resistance cell fighters (led by Commander Washington) and Skynet ground units happened to pass by. The resistance narrowly gaining victory (at great cost including their medic), Anthony reasoned that he could have a better chance of survival if he joined. Impressed with the skill he showed with keeping the tempermental generator in working order, Commander Washington offered him a place in his cell as an "grease monkey" in the make shift motor pool. Before being allowed out on proper missions when he turned 15/16.

Caitlin

Ghehe, I like your character's nickname Baalborn. ;D

I watched Terminator Salvation again tonight and I had some more inspiration for the storyline. What I have in mind at the moment fits with canon for a full 100%. If we get enough people to get it going then it's going to rock!

We'll need at least one more person, but preferably two and at most three more. That should give us a good group to work with. I don't want the group to be too big since that makes it very impractical and we'll keep waiting for one another, but too small isn't a lot of fun either. If we can't get enough people then I'm open to somebody playing two characters. Originally I thought of that anyway, but then I figured it'd be more fun if we could get enough players to play one character each since it tends to create more interesting dynamics in the group. :-)

Baalborn87

Added some more background. If I've gone off tack slightly. Let me know and I'll fix it

Robelwell202

Gonna bow out, folks.   Sorry, but I can't commit to the game.

Thanks for your understanding.

Sorry to hear so Robelwell, but I appreciate your honesty. I rather hear about these things early on then having people go off the radar and being unable to contact them. :-)

Baalborn, it's looking good so far.

LordMing

If this doesn't pass muster then I would very much like to take on the role of reprogrammed T-800.  Or I can do both if you like.

Name: MCPO Jonah York
Played by: LordMing
Age: 47
Personality traits: Laconic, tough, independent
Specialty: Spec-Ops, Heavy Weapons
Cell member since (weeks/ months/ years): 1 week/2 months/10 years
Biography: York joined the Navy right out of high school and volunteered for BUDs as soon as he was able.  His family had been military, so he had been preparing his entire life for the day he would get his chance to add his name to the family lineage, and he intended to make it name to remember.  He served for four years as a member of the teams and he served with distinction, as he earned many commendations, two purple hearts and the navy cross during missions against various terrorist groups and pirates across the globe.  He was a Chief Petty Officer when the bombs dropped, he and his team were deep in the badlands of Yemen, and his CO was hit by enemy fire as they were caught flatfooted by the sudden eruption of mushroom clouds over the population centers.  Given a battlefield promotion by his Lieutenant, York tried to bring what was left of his team home, scrapping the mission when the last attempt to contact base by satphone brought a drone strike on their position that killed two men.  It took years for him to get home to the states, and only one of his men made it with him.  He watched the rise of the machines, their development and he learned how to kill them by hard earned experience and broadcasts from some guy calling himself John Connor.  He doesn't talk much, he only smirks when someone asks him about the scars on his head, but when he does talk, he is usually trying to teach some pup how to survive.  If they listen or not, that's their problem.
Klytus, I'm bored. What play thing can you offer me today? ~Emperor Ming

Baalborn87

Hey Ming, what would you think of my guy being the"young pup" that Yorks took upon himself to look after. I think Anthony might follow someone who reminds him of his father.

elfguy

Name: Kathy Johnson
Played by:  elfguy
Age:  19
Personality traits:  Rebellious, violent, flirty
Specialty:  scavenging and self sustenance
Cell member since (weeks/ months/ years):  5 years
Biography: Kathy can be described as a rebellious child and a gun nut. She dislikes the machines, and wants to hurt them as much as she possibly can. She's trained with hand guns and knives all her life, having grown in this environment. Her father was one of the first member of the resistance and brought her up to become a fighter, before he died. As a result of her personality, she is known to take risks and go out into the world by herself, but she has so far been fairly lucky and avoided any major injuries, perhaps due to her extensive experience in roaming this land. She is also used to live on few supplies and scavenging anything that can be of use. When not out in the field, she maintains a strong, athletic body, since she was taught early on that the only person she can count on was herself. Unlike older people, she has no knowledge of what came before the machines, other than what her father taught her. As such, she isn't fighting for honor or glory, but simply by hate and resentment. She has a developed a cold personality, and can be difficult to befriend. She listens to orders, most of the time, but is known to do as she pleases as well.

I think that's a capital idea mate.  Good one to develop
Klytus, I'm bored. What play thing can you offer me today? ~Emperor Ming

Caitlin

I sent LordMing and elfguy both a pm. Please keep in mind that I'm only accepting characters between 16 - 30 years old, the player characters should have no knowledge of what life was like before Judgment Day other than what they were told.

Please also select realistic images (no actors/ photo models/ bodybuilder photos) and select a Specialty that isn't related to combat. I'd like every character to have something unique, like being a mechanic, engineer, chemist, etc. It should be a skill that will be useful during missions, like how my character specialized in computers. All characters are assumed to handle various weapons and know basic first aid.

elfguy

I modified mine, I guess as someone used to go solo she would be an expert on scavenging and self reliance, and not so good with things that involve group work.
----

Caitlin

Euh... one of the NPC's (Rat Boy) already has scavenging as his specialty -snickers-

I figured we'd just task him with the boring stuff, like 'go fetch me a chair'. Think along the lines of this; you're in a group with 5 people, and you're going to take on a skynet base. You'll want to infiltrate that base and also make it out alive again, what kinda skills would be useful for this? So far we have a mechanic and a computer scientist. The mechanic could fix an escape car, the computer scientist can hack her way into systems, but what kinda skill does your char bring along that'll help the mission?

I'm really hoping to get a chemist among the chars as well so we have somebody that can make explosives and do other funky chemical stuff, like making gasoline to get cars running and things like that. There is also a bunch of other Specialties that'd be nice to have on the team, like an inventor or engineer that can create useful items such as night vision goggles, but there are also other things we could use on such a mission.

New character picture looks great by the way!

elfguy

Well a chemist wouldn't go with her bio at all. I guess she can be good at creating and repairing tools from scavenged items.
----

Caitlin

That'd work too but you should probably check with Baalborn to see what the differences between your skills are, since his character is a mechanic. His told me that his focus is on engines though. I'd like to see each character have something really unique.

The comment about the chemist was meant in general, not specifically for your character. :)
