Okay, Plan B then.  Would it be okay if I incorporated the Dobson case into my character's background by saying that he was a friend of Rachel Dobson back in high school?

I love this concept but do not think I will have the time to write with you, fine folks. Please post a link to the game when it is up, I would enjoy following along.

Of course. And if you figure it out before the team do, send me a PM!

This is fine, and could easily be why he decided to become a cop in the first place. However... The "Dobson Case" is part of EJ's backstory, which makes it canon, but it is NOT going to be a part of the current investigation. I have no problem with people referencing it it their own back-stories, but it is past history... There have been plenty of other cases since!

Freshly transferred from the big city to get away from 'stuff' there?

No... That's what I meant by 'No "Axel Foleys"'.

I'm saying it again, not because I think people have forgotten, but because I want to emphasise the point:

The purpose of the game is to solve the murder and catch the killer.

To do this, you need detectives. Not SWAT specialists, not consultants, not "psychics", You need people who will be thorough, who will examine the clues, sift the evidence and come to the correct conclusions...

This is going to be a small homicide team, who probably spend most of their time investigating burglaries rather than murders, because murders are not that common in Ubiquitous.

You're joking again, right?

Although, seriously, if you want to introduce that sort of element of her character, I wouldn't object. But also I wouldn't give out any information in response to their use.

One of the cop shows my wife likes and that I don't object to is "The Mentalist". Patrick Jayne is a former "Psychic" con-artist who now works with the police, and uses his "powers" to help solve crimes. But his powers all consist of observation, deduction and being an exceptional judge of character. There is nothing supernatural in what he does, and he is always quick to point this out.

Now, the thing is, I am not going to object if a character wants to showboat, pretend to be psyching and produce a metaphorical rabbit out of a metaphorical hat, but the data they will have, they will have gathered in the usual way...!

Oh and by the by, just because I mentioned The mentalist, the rule regarding no consultants still stands!

Chrystal, your points of emphasis will help us stay focused.  I like that you are sticking to your concept so we don't make this into a collectively diffuse version of the original concept.

Deathnote

#55
WIP
Character Name: Andy Li

Player ID: Deathnote

Rank: Detective

Age: 27

Role: The bitter cop who just lost his/her partner

Appearance: Andy is the type to keep up a strict training regime in order to maintain his sinewy and athletic build.  He stands at around 5 feet 9 and is of average weight for that height.  He has several scars, starting from when he was just a kid who got into all sorts of trouble to when he was training at the police academy.  He also has a gunshot wound from when he was shot in the chest on the day his partner was killed.  He'll put on a suit and tie for work, but doesn't do much else to keep up a professional appearance.

Personality: Has somewhat of a short temper and normally wears a bitter frown on his face.  He used to be the type who made an effort to be friendly with others, but has recently become a bit brutish and distant.  He has a tendency to get lost in his own thoughts and may come across as lackadaisical and carefree.  In spite of this attitude, however, he takes his job seriously and does everything he can to get the job done.  Outside of work, however, he'll sometimes get into some trouble.  He was once suspended for getting into a major bar fight after one too many drinks.

History: Andy grew up in Ubiquitous and was the type of kid who liked to explore places where he really shouldn't, such as alleged "haunted houses", abandoned factories, and far deep into the woods.  After watching one too many Kung-Fu films, he begged his parents to let him learn martial arts.  They relented and enrolled him into a local Chinese martial arts dojo that taught several different styles.

By the time he was in middle school, he was constantly getting into fights with racist bullies who made fun of him for being Asian.  He was suspended multiple times due to his short temper.  He was eventually able to find an outlet for his rage through sports and by the time he was in high school, he was a starter on the basketball team.  One of the reasons why he was able to learn how to control his temper was through his friendship with fellow student Rachel Dobson.

Everything changed ten years ago while he was still in high school.  His friend, Rachel Dobson was murdered by a sick and twisted monster.  As though to add salt to injury, the perpetrator got off scot-free.  As a teenager, Andy didn't understand how that could have happened back then.  Even with his current knowledge and experience, he still barely grasped what happened in that courtroom that day.  In an effort to understand... in his need to know what went wrong... when he got into University, he applied and enrolled into a few courses related to law and criminology.  Before he knew it, he had a degree in criminology.  After graduation, he applied and enrolled into the State Academy.  He has been a Detective for about two years.

A few months ago, while he was on a case with his partner, Detective Carter, the two of them were able to link several armed burglaries to an Arms Dealer.  They were able to obtain the necessary evidence to bring the Arms Dealer down and decided they had to move quickly before their perp could skip town.  Not wanting their collar to get away, they decided not to wait for back-up and moved in, believing they were only going to have to deal with a single criminal who sold illegal firearms out of the trunk of his car.  The Arms Dealer, unfortunately, had a couple of ex-military friends.  During the fire-fight, the detectives were able to take out the ex-military bodyguards.  Carter, however, was fatally wounded.  Before Andy realized what was happening, the Arms Dealer shot him in the chest before skipping town.  Andy woke up several days later in the hospital, where he was delivered the bad news about his late partner.

After he was released from the hospital, he was given a leave of absence before being allowed to return to work.  He has become noticeably... distant since the incident.

Nymphadora

Woo Approved!

Character Name: Cassidy Locke

Player ID: Nymphadora

Rank: N/A

Age: 26

Role: The Geeky, techy, forensics specialist

Appearance: With her brilliantly dyed red hair, chunked with a black swatch in the front when the mood strikes, Cassidy could pass for a pin-up model. Often styled like she's heading to a photo shoot, she even acts the part at times. Her clothes do a poor job of hiding her stylised tattoos and the odd tasteful piercing. She will often wear flamboyant glasses that are prescriptionless and simply another part of her fashion statement.

Personality: When seen outside of the office it might be impossible to believe that she has a multiple sciences degree, owns a first edition Hound of The Baskervilles, and can repeat pi to a hundred places. While she looks more like she'd belong in some club bopping around to ska or swing music, Cass would rather spend time in her lab. People might mistake her for a just a young, pin-up model, but she quickly corrects them, explaining she is 100% Rockabilly with a taste for punk rock. Cass is energetic, friendly, and always ready to help. She has a strange sense of humour; keen to remind you that she could probably kill you without leaving evidence.

History:  Cass has been a fan of detective mysteries ever since her father used to read her Sherlock Holmes stories before bed. She basically grew up with a love of detectives and mysteries and never wavered from making that her career choice. With a keen interest in deductive reasoning and science, Cass quickly turned into a lover of forensics following that path in college. She proved to have a real knack for many fields and worked hard on degrees in Chemistry, Biology, and Forensic Science.

Her unique appearance belies a keen investigative and scientific mind. With a staunch refusal to change who she is, Cass didn't attempt to change in order to land her dream job. Eventually, she had a chance to prove herself. A year ago, a man by the name of Mark DeRullio broke into the apartment next door, seeking revenge on his ex-girlfriend. Cassidy was the first one to hear the confrontation and the first one on the scene. Her insight into the crime scene first had her pegged as a suspect, but later evidence not only proved her innocent but her deductions spot on as well. Impressed, the department hired her on.

Ok.  If Mr. Howling joins, too, we have closer to critical mass.

I am off on our US Memorial weekend.  Have a great weekend all.

OKAY

Deathnote's character is approved (with revised back-story).

I've PMed BlackHowling to see if he is still in.

If anyone knows of any other players they think might be interested, please point them this way?

I'm looking to make some sort of a start this week, hopefully. Now, it will work with the players we have... It will work better with maybe two or three more. Above that, it starts to get unweildy, which is why I set a maximum of ten...

As long as I have a CORE of three or four who will see it through, the game should work okay if other players come and go.

A few months ago, Andy's partner, Detective Carter checked into a cheap motel located somewhere at the edge of Ubiquitous County.  He locked himself in his room, drank an entire bottle of bourbon, and shot himself through the mouth with his standard police-issued handgun.  There was no explanation as to why he did it.  He showed no prior signs or warnings that he was about to do this.  He didn't even leave a suicide note.

Unable to accept his partner's death, Andy spent a good deal of time attempting to piece together why.  He wanted to make sense of it all.  He was even convinced at one point that his partner was murdered.  All evidence, however, pointed to suicide and Andy was forced to face that reality.  It just happened and will forever remain a mystery.

Black Howling

Finished my sheet and sent it in for Chrystal's perusal. Apologies to everyone for the wait. Hopefully it works without too many edits.  ::)

Black Howling

Character Name: Tyler Maxon

Player ID: Black Howling

Rank: Detective Sergeant

Age: 38

Role: The "collar at any price" slightly bent cop

Appearance: Detective Maxon is a man of medium stature, standing at only about 5'10" (178CM) tall. His build is stocky, hinting at an impressive musculature beneath, a remnant of his service days from years prior. His has dark brown hair and eyes to match, along with what appears to be constant five O'clock shadow. His casual dress typically consists of plan solid colors, jackets and jeans. If he had his way this would also be his attire for work, purely for comforts sake. Alas, there is a dress code that needs maintained. His suits are well made, though somewhat plain in nature and often lacking a tie when he can get by with it.

Personality: Detective Maxon is best described as rough around the edges. His time as an MP has colored much of his persona, lending him to keep things a little close to the chest except around people he trusts. The things he's seen overseas has lent to at-least minor PTSD, though when applying his symptoms were completely under control. A lot has happened since his hire date, however and he worries he may not pass another psyche exam should he be subjected to one. That is a gateway to one of his biggest fears because a failed one would have him stripped of his badge, and he's uncertain how he'd adjust to civilian life. Especially after so many years in police work, outside the military and in.

History: Detective Maxon's foray into Police work started when he was a fresh faced undergrad out of community college. He'd just completed his first steps with an associates in criminal justice. His family, however, had a proud history of military service, a fact that prompted Tyler to join the ranks of the US Army. Due to his studies, he was placed in the auxiliary units as an MP. He was convinced he'd never see much in the way of action. A few years later proved him wrong.

With the destruction of the Twin Towers and the US's subsequent invasion into Afghanistan, many of the auxiliary were being deployed. MP's in particular due to the nature of the war. This started what would become a long tour overseas for the man, each year spent in some of the worst places he could imagine. His patriotic zeal only went so far, so when it became time to re-up, he instead chose to leave his service days behind. Luckily for him he'd finished his graduate degree online while serving, and so he returned home in hopes of joining the academy.

Tyler's previous experience and education seen him passing the exams and making his way into the ranks of his hometown's police force after being discharged. For a while, things were good. He spent the next several years doing his best and without many complications. That changed when he made detective. His first case involved a suspected drug dealer by the of Edward Dixon, a man he was certain was not only cooking large amounts of meth, but a murderer. He had little proof of the drugs, and none about the murders aside from a gut hunch and the look in his eyes.

Maxon tried to do things by the book, he really did, but after a month of struggling to find so much as a slip, he became fed up with it all. Dixon was good, so he had to take matters into his own hands. On that hunch he planted an unregistered .38 in Dixons car and ensured he was there when the man was pulled over for forgetting to use his turn signal. With the gun as evidence, he had enough for a search warrant, which later confirmed all his suspicions about the man.

They found loads of meth being cooked in his house along with another gun, an unregistered M9 with three bodies on it. Luckily his hunch was right, and he netted a promotion along with a transfer to homicide. He said it'd be the last time, just like he said the whiskey binge afterward would only happen once. He lied to himself. So far it's happened three other occasions, each with a worse binge following it then the last. He worries eventually he'll mess up, that eventually he'll be wrong and send someone to prison who doesn't belong there. It eats at him nightly, keeping him from sleep, which has prompted his addiction.

So far Maxon has managed to keep his habit away from the prying eyes of his partners, though he also worries how long he can keep this up. He knows sometimes he's barely holding it together, but he's convinced himself the department needs someone like him.

Other: Maxon's Hometown is Ubiquitous. He's had a failed marriage not mentioned in the background, and it is a trigger for his temper when brought up. Face Claim is Colin Farrell

Can I play an ME or Coroner? Or is the GM handling that line of work?

Chrystal

GM is handling the ME/Coroner simply because the amount of posting required is extremely limited. Basically the autopsy on one body. If it gets that far, there may be a second body, and so on... but the majority of the game is going to involve detective work.

Thank you for the very quick response. Still very interested.

I saw that no one took the "Rule-Bender who gets results." yet. Is this still true?

Once I finish reading the rules more closely I'll look to start designing a CS for submission. :D

I'm excited now!
