Eagerly awaiting the new series, and hoping they eventually bring in the Sea Ponies (as proper hippocampi, I hope, instead of those thalidomide-beasties).

Shoo be doo! :)

Jillabelle

(Had to try and explain MLP:FIM to a hitchhiker the other day, as she saw my Happy Meal toy dangling from the rearview and commented on it....)

I'm looking forward to the new season as well. I would like to see more returning characters myself. Rather than just having them for a one-shot purpose.

Also, that's awesome. Reminds me of Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic) having to explain Bronies to get back into the USA.

When was that? @_@

Heh.  That is quite an interesting video you've got there.  Never knew TNC had to deal with that.

Arohk

Yeah, I think a lot of people missed that video, lol. XD But I watch everything he puts out so.

Kunoichi

It definitely was pretty interesting to watch. ^^

Wolfy

November.

Season 3.

Be there. @_@

It's going to be 20% cooler than Season 2.

Kunoichi

Which was, in turn, 20% cooler than Season 1. :P

Dhi

Are you suggesting compound interest on our initial investment of cool? Is that a sustainable coolness model?

Ever wondered how Pinkie got her Pinkie sense?
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Kunoichi

Hmm.  A radioactive spider-bite certainly would explain Pinkie's ability to hold onto objects with only a single hoof.  I think there are a few time's she's walked on walls on-screen, too...

Could I ask if anyone could offer a sociological explanation as to why this show is so damn popular?

Oniya

It doesn't talk down to the audience.  Much like the old Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies/Warner Brothers material, there's enough there to keep the interest of an adult while still being entertaining to a child.  There are references that a child may not get, but not getting them doesn't detract from the show.

In short, it's not pre-digested pablum.

That makes a bit of sense though I do not feel that it truly answers the question in it's entirety.

Well if I remember my history right, it all started because of a negative review. The review was along the line of how the show is just garbage to sell toys to kids. It actually had the opposite affect as it sparked curiosity and some brave people actually sought out to see if it was as bad as the review claimed. However the show is in fact very good. People who liked the show started to talk about it in the cartoon and comic section of the influential image board 4chan. And considering the affect 4chan has on Internet culture it was only a matter of time before it got to the popularity it has today.

I tried watching an episode and I was rather underwhelmed by everything. In fact it made it harder for me to understand why.I'm afraid I simply don't get it.

Dhi

I don't think I can really answer the question, because I'm not going to have much in common with the folks who enjoy the pony porn, nor the people who found the show through a place like 4chan. I hate that the Wikipedia article mentions 4chan, I think it's a wildly inappropriate link in an article about a show for little girls.

Oh?  Which episode did you watch, if I might ask?

To be honest, I don't think there's any single concrete reason for why Friendship is Magic got to be so popular.  When it first started out, a combination of luck and the fact that the show was actually quite good on its own merits managed to attract a strong following, and then consistent quality and a large number of dedicated, creative fans have kept the fandom alive and thriving since then.

That's okay. Not everyone is going to like it. Also just because everyone else seems to like something is not a reason to feel you have to like it too. You've probably heard the whole, "if everyone else was jumping off a bridge would you do it too?" argument once in your life.

Also there also comes the problem that because everyone loves it and builds it up, it leaves new comers with too high expectations and are let down. Personally I wasn't swayed with just one episode, but the more I watched the more I liked it.

I don't know the name, but it had some sort of dragon like creature in it.

Well that narrows it down...

One of the main characters is a dragon named Spike. He is in most of the episodes.
