Game Information and Approved Characters - OOC and Discussion

Overview

This is a freeform, sandbox group that follows the survivors of an apocalyptic event, in which individuals infected by a virus transform into mutated, blood thirsty monsters in the very near future.  It is set around a makeshift refugee center that was once a county jail, and serves as the focal point for the group of survivors as they wait for rescue and hope for a cure.

I, GnothiSeauton, will be the GM.  It is asked that completed character sheets be PMed to me for evaluation.

It is going to be set on the extreme boards, and will utilize a rating system in the header for each IC post.  This is to help avoid those who do not wish to read certain scenes or extreme activities.  Sexual activity may occur, however, there will not be any GM pushed sexual events.  Sexual scenes are up to the individual writers.

There is no set posting pace for this group.  However, it is asked that you try to post at least once a week, whether it be in the IC threads, or in the OOC.  This is to help demonstrate that you're still interested in the group, and is not mandatory.  If you're going to leave, or be away, please do the right thing and let the GM know.

There is no source material for this group.  However, if you're looking for something good to read that helped inspire this to a great extent, check out Justin Cronin's the Passage series.

The Story and World

Overview

It began with the simple desire possessed by so many:  immortality...

In the winter of 2017, the USAMRIID (The United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases) began to explore the possibility of developing the ultimate super soldier.  By absorbing and recruiting various medical researchers and biochemists in a top secret effort to make the military might of the United States practically invincible.  These research efforts were aimed at making soldiers, through a simple injection, resistant to diseases, increase physical strength, speed, and endurance, as well as to greatly increase the natural lifespan of human beings.

Using rare strains and DNA samples of South American bats, researchers began to experiment and work towards the great endeavor of making humans immortal.  Only a few people, incarcerated individuals on death row, were used as the first test subjects in the highly contained, remote facility in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

But something went wrong...  Terribly wrong...

At some point, early in the summer of 2018, containment broke down.  These infected individuals, the first carriers of what would become known as the V-Virus, broke free of the bonds that once held them in place, and began to spread the disease across the continent.

Timeline of Events

• June 6th, 2018:  Various news outlets report of a terrorist attack at a U.S. Military installation in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.  No terror organization claims responsibility.  U.S. Military put on highest alert.
• June 7th, 2018:  Multiple cities in the surrounding area go dark.  Reports of large scale military mobilization in and around the area.
• June 9th, 2018:  The United States Government declares that the terrorist attack may have also been a chemical attack.  Due to that, and declaring that the terrorists are still at large, the state of Colorado is quarantined.  Military institutes a No-Fly-Zone over the whole of the state, major highways and interstate shut down.
• June 10th, 2018:  Viral videos of infected individuals begin to spread from behind the quarantine zone.  Government declares videos to be hoaxes and fake news.  The internet and civilian lines of communication are shut down.
• June 14th - 17th, 2018:  The Battle of Denver begins in the quarantine zone.  Casualties are heavy, and once the city falls, the United States President authorizes the bombing of Denver and surrounding areas.
• June 18th, 2018:  Reports of the virus having jumped state lines are confirmed with the first official case outside of Colorado being found in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
• June 18th - 30th, 2018  More and more videos of the infected begin to surface faster than the United States Government can take down.  White House remains silent, as more and more cities and towns go dark.  Military scouts report whole cities and towns empty of life.
• July 2nd, 2018  Reports of infected in the Las Vegas area.  More and more town and cities in the rural northwest go dark.
• July 3rd, 2018  First reports of infected in Chicago.  A state of emergency is declared.
• July 5th - 8th, 2018  The 29 Line is established, a military line of defense stretching along most of Interstate 29 to try and quarantine as much as possible from expanding East.  Fighting is intense, and some sections of the defensive line are overtaken.  Cases of infection are beginning to spread through Mexico at a rapid rate.
• July 12th, 2018  Chicago is effectively a war zone, with the last reports of infected moving towards the east.  The President authorizes the nuclear bombing of the city.
• July 13th and 14th, 2018  California and Texas State Legislatures convene to formally secede from the United States.  Federal property within the territories is requisitioned for the defense of the former states.
• July 15th, 2018  Riots and protests begin to break out in major cities.  Promises of a cure being made begin to circulate from government officials.
• July 13th-16th, 2018  The United Nations convenes for an emergency meeting in the Hague, Netherlands.  International Quarantine is put into effect along North and Central America.  Focus begins to shift on evacuating portions of South America as the infection spreads south.
• July 20th, 2018  Seattle is overrun by infected overnight.
• July 22nd, 2018  Containment is breaking down along the Pennsylvania defensive line.  Reports of infected as far north and east as Maine.
• July 17th - 23rd, 2018  Wildfires rage out of control in the west, devastating the west coast as reports and communication fail.
• July 24th, 2018  The President of the United States and key members of the United States Government attempt to evacuate, but protesters and rioters assail the convoy.  New York City is under quarantine as Philadelphia burns.

 

This story follows the refugees in the aftermath of the failing efforts at containment.

As the virus spreads, and more and more chaos rages across the populated cities, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the United States Army, and the Red Cross have joined forces to help create emergency refuge centers for those fleeing the infected lands.  Some have come on their own, some have come on military transports.  However, it has become quickly apparent that the demand far exceeds the resources available.  Overcrowding, fighting, ration shortages, and the like have forced many Refuge Centers to break down and start sending refugees away to other facilities that have been requisitioned.

The Virus

The V-Virus, also known as the Plague, was developed by the USAMRIID, under the direction of the U.S. Government as a cure for everything, but namely the genetic and physical strengthening of humans to create the ultimate super soldier.  But man's reach exceeded it's grasp, and no one could have foreseen what would become of their efforts.

The virus is spread through bites and scratches.  If the blood of the infected is ingested or contacts the eyes of uninfected individuals, the virus will take hold. 

The first signs of infection begins with fever and chills.  Within a few hours, the body begins to shed any and all hair.  Internally, the virus works on a molecular level, changing the genetic structure and chemistry of the body to something that becomes almost entirely unrecognizable.  Muscles begin to strengthen the jaws and facial structure begin to change.  Skin becomes more pale, nearly translucent.  Fingers and toes begin to elongate into claws. 

Within three hours, the infected becomes unresponsive to all communication.  Aggression rises, as well as heightened senses. 

Within eight hours after contact, the infected's transformation is complete. 


Strengths

• Increased speed and agility
• Increased strength
• Heightened sense of smell, particularly with regards to the scent of blood.
• Hunts in packs
• Possesses rudimentary communication skills among other infected
• Not easily distracted

Weaknesses

• Silver causes extreme pain
• Severe head trauma (i.e. decapitation) will kill an infected
• Can not survive in sunlight or bright lights.  A high-powered flashlight will cause harm and pain.
• Intense fire will kill an infected individual.
• Can only move and hunt at night
• Can not swim, and will drown
• Penetration of the heart will cause death

The virus largely does not affect animals.  If bitten and not devoured, the animal will die of massive internal organ failure.

The Clarence County Jail

The main setting for the story is in the Clarence County Jail.

Relatively new, this jail facility was built in the southwestern area of Tennessee.  Set in a rural area, the makeup of the surrounding area is consisting of sparsely populated towns.  The closest main attraction for entertainment are a few local strip malls and the local Walmart.

Requisitioned by the military, the Clarence County Jail has been declared a makeshift refugee center, available to house and hold a number of refugees.  Available features include bedding, weaponry, medical supplies, food supplies, gasoline, and the like.

It was built to be eco-friendly, with solar panels on the roof providing enough electricity to keep the lights on and things running.  This, in addition to the small number of windows, high-frequency radio antennas, multiple internal defensive points, and the like make it a formidable position.

The surrounding areas include Parkersville, a relatively small town about six miles away to the west with a population that was around one thousand (pre-infection), Harper Township, a small hamlet of about twenty seven (pre-infection) that is about two miles away to the east, Walmart, located on Route 35, ten miles away.  Natural features include various tributaries of the Tennessee River.

The Rules

• Real life ALWAYS comes first!  This is just writing, and having fun.  If you need to step away, feel free to step away.  We'll always be around, and there is no rush.  But if you're going to be away, please let it be known either to the GM or in the OOC.
  
• Be respectful of your fellow writers!  No Godmodding!  Always check to see if the other person is alright with something when it comes to kinks, whether through PMs, Character Sheets, or their On's and Off's thread.
• Characters MUST be eighteen years of age or older.  This is for the comfort of everyone involved.
• List the content of your post in the warning section of the header if it's something sexual or violent. While this game is pretty relaxed about story elements, as long as they fit within the site rules, some individuals may not be alright with reading over certain elements and kinks.  It's totally fine to make fun of the warning section and put jokes in there.  I do it all the time myself, but please list extreme elements or sexual elements.
• Character Death MUST be decided beforehand!  Even if a writer is open to having their character killed, please be respectful and discuss it with them beforehand.
• Humans only!  No mythical creatures, aliens, etc.  Mortal humans only.
• Please refrain from writing massive infected attacks.  If your character kills one or two, that's fine.  However, if you want to have a huge, massive attack, please discuss it with me beforehand to work out the logistics of it and to get more people involved.
• Follow the Site Rules.  Needless to say.
• Don't force sex scenes on writers.  Again, please be respectful of your fellow writers.  While this is a group with a focus in many places on non-con situations, please check with your fellow writer before introducing a sexual scene instead of just jumping in without asking.  It's rude and inconsiderate.  Not everyone is looking for smut at any given moment.
• Don't be afraid to speak up.  If something is bothering you, you're feeling left out, or you want to get out, don't hesitate to let the GM(s) know.  I for one would be more than happy to help out with anything, and am understanding when it comes to needing to leave.  I'll do whatever I can to help out.
• Let the GM(s) know, or post in the OOC, if you are going to be away for an extended amount of time.  This is mainly for the sake of everyone involved.  If you're having muse issues, need to take a bit of a break, unable to post, or just want to leave, please at least let it be known in the OOC.  The muse comes and goes.  I know that all too well.
• Leave the drama at the door.  Leave the drama at the door.  If you can't get along with an individual, then don't interact with them.  I am not choosing individuals as to who stays and who goes.  I'm not getting into the middle of others' drama.  If you can't handle being in the same game as another individual, don't bother.
• Keep it civil.  There's no need for arguing.  I'm a firm believer in the saying that, if you have nothing good to say, it's better to not say anything.
• Have Fun.  Pretty self explanatory :)

Character Rules and Guidelines

• Human characters only.  No half-infected, no hybrids, etc.  Non-infected humans only.
• All characters must be eighteen years of age or older.  This is for the comfort of all involved within the story.
• This game is LGBTQ friendly.  Any and all genders, sexualities, and races.  As long as they're human, and living, it's more than acceptable.
• Character sheets must be correctly formatted with the character sheet.  Assistance will be available for those who require assistance.  Please follow the instructions for each section/field of the sheet.  Failure to do so will result in you being asked to make the corrections.
• There is a maximum of two characters per writer.  That is subject to change depending upon the level of interest and activity within the group.
• Pictures must be actual individuals, or realistic artwork.  Photos that are overtly cartoonish or anime will not be allowed and will not be accepted.
• When you are finished with your sheet, please PM it to the me, GnothiSeauton.  Approval can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days.  GMs have lives too, you know.

Minor edits and additional photos are more than allowed for your sheets, and do not need to be approved.  However, if you  make significant changes that alter your character (i.e. considerable changes to history), please give me a heads up.

..I already have a lot of RPs...but this sounds fun for me.

I will be an unlucky college student who survived an outbreak at her university by setting a fire to keep the vamps away and  thanks to the timely arrival of help. Back when finding survivors and destroying nests was a priority. Now, it just seems like every group of survivors or entrenched position is out to survive on its own.

I'm going to wait for a few more people before opening it up further.  At that time, I hope to have a sort of timeline on events around the country (and world for that matter), more details on the infected and the virus, and more info on the start of the group/story.

I envisioned it skewed more towards ordinary civilians trying to survive, with some military characters.

My vision for the start was for it to begin at a sort of refugee center, basically a military base that has been turned into a large hub for people who have fled infected areas.  With the base being over capacity, running low on food and supplies, with reports of infected headed towards the base, the powers that be begin to plan to move the civilians. 

This would start with the characters, from various places in the country at this military base, being placed on a bus, under the supervision and organization of some military characters, and being moved to a better equipped base.

Right now, I'm planning on having a military character, one that has been put in charge of the group, and a civilian.

Well thank you :)  Quite the fan of yours, to be honest.

Honestly, I don't have any idea about what sort of a group I'm expecting in terms of size.  A part of me is leaning towards a smaller group, but I don't want to turn anyone away, and welcome more people.

Response time...  I don't have a response time, especially for groups.  I'd like it if people posted at least once a week, whether in IC threads or the OOC, just to sort of keep people aware that you're still active or interested, but I'm a believer in people posting when they can and when they feel the desire and muse to write.

Also not planning on a posting order or anything like that.  If the group is really small, like four or five, I might consider it, but I'm not planning on it at this time.

I'm pretty laid back as a GM when it comes to responses and getting sheets done/submitted.  I think writing should be fun, and not a chore.  I'd rather have a post from someone who wants to write, instead of something that's forced for the sake of getting something done.

My very rough idea for a character concept is of a girl who is young-ish and small, probably no more than 5'2", 105lbs. Because of her size, she must survive by her wit and social skills. She has to learn to rely on others--or manipulate them--in order to survive. She's not totally helpless, though. I'm considering making her a gymnast, light on her feet, able to slip in and out of tight situations and go where others can't.

Gnothi, do you have any age restrictions for this RP, beyond the site rules for E of course...

I would prefer 18 years or older, just for the comfort of everyone involved, since I know some might be a bit uncomfortable with younger characters and the potential for sexual scenes, but if there is a sufficient interest in having that limit removed, whether voiced here or through PMs, I would be open to it.

I'm fine with 18+. I'm more interested in the relative naivety of the character, which has more to do with upbringing than age.

The original idea was to have it as a group on the move, however, after thinking it over, and taking into account the amount of preliminary interest, I was wondering if it would be better and easier to have it set in a sort of base of sorts.  My initial thought would be a sort of jail/prison that would be converted into a refugee center.  I've got a lot written up of that setting for another group concept, and would be easier / quicker to put it into effect. 

And for those wondering, I'm thinking of a maximum of two characters per writer.

I say maybe a mix of both could work. A central place for the Characters to take shelter and heal up in, that we can fortify and defend at night and other places we can visit during the day or other nights to scavenge for supplies and maybe meet other survivors both friendly and non.

The mentioning of the Prison reminds me of one of the Animated Comics from the I Am Legend DVD where the soldiers talked of a similar plan but everything collapses too quickly for it to be put into action.

No reason why we can't have away teams heading into the wider world from time to time.

My most successful had a really interesting weakness of (bodies of) water... the survivors eventually made a heated pool to sleep in at night and those lost in the cities would immerse themselves in fall bathtubs to avoid the vamps :D

Arrows/crossbow bolts could definitely work.

Silver plated tips would cause harm.  Depending on where it hits, it could kill them or cause great harm.

Right now, with the timeline that's done up, I have it so that the world beyond the Americas has largely begun to quarantine the hemisphere.  There's evacuation attempts in South America as the infection spreads south, but for the large part, the people in the United States are in the dark, so to speak, about what's going on outside of the country.

Cool , I daresay most countries that could help would choose not to , most Nato countries might be completely concerned about keeping the virus away from their own shores, while less friendly countries might be more inclined to let the US descend into a non entity.

The Brits of course would not lightly turn their back on the US in time of need and they definitely would come to Canada's aid so they might be looking for a way to help where they knew help could be delivered.

Also...  A note...  I turned Captain Davis into a GM Character.  This means that, should another GM come aboard, he will be available for them to use as well, as he is a character designed to help progress the story and narrative.  I'll still write him, and will have him open for interactions and such.  It's just a clarification that I wanted to put out there that he is not really intended for major connections/relations, and is there more for the story and helping to get people active.  I have another character of a similar designation in the works, but will be revealed at a later date, as he is going to be a major character in terms of the story and narrative.

There'll be plenty of time to jump in before things move on.  I have no plans to close recruitment, as it'll be easy for stragglers and newcomers to wander in as the story progresses.

Due to the rise in submitted sheets and interest, the In Character Threads are officially up and open.

History and Past
A thread to write scenes and interactions before the beginning of the outbreak.  Included in this thread is a guide to the refugee process, what one might have experienced, gone through, etc.  You don't have to follow this, but just wanted to put something up to clarify a few things and paint a general picture.

Surrounding Areas
Pretty self explanatory.  An IC thread for scenes taking place in the surrounding lands around the jail.

Clarence County Jail
This is self explanatory again.  Basically an IC thread that's for scenes taking place in the jail, as well as the immediate surrounding area within, say, a hundred feet or so.  A few things about this thread...

• I expect this to probably be the most active.  Decisions on breaking it down will come at a later date.
• The IC post between Captain Davis and Acting Sheriff Cassidy is not mandatory, but goes a ways in describing the road/journey to the jail, as well as what's going on at the jail when the buses arrive.  It's not a mandatory read, but helps to paint a picture.
• The first event is active.  It is optional, and is just a way to help bring people together, since this does seem to be a group of strangers to one another in terms of characters.

Also something else is coming at a later date.  Keeping my lips shut on that, and won't go into details, but...

In order to help further flesh out the world, and particularly to help set the stage, this group will utilize a general database of NPCs.

These NPCs are not full fledged characters.  As such, there is no set face claim for NPCs.  Anyone can create and submit an NPC by filling in a simple little sheet and submitting it to the GM for publication in this post.

Anyone can play an NPC, whether by creating post and writing as that character, or by using them in a post for a full fledged character.

NPCs can be changed into full characters by filling out a character sheet.

When creating an NPC, please use the sheetlet below.

A new IC thread has been opened called Down Time and Side Scenes.  This is primarily for scenes that aren't necessarily tied into events that are taking place (i.e. the breakfast that's currently going on, a planned raid, etc).  The building of relationships, side scenes, etc. take place in this thread.

The hope with this thread is to help put the focus more on action and the story, rather than being bogged and slowed as can be the case with a great many decent sized apocalyptic group.

There is a new event going on in the group right now that's a great way for people who want to join and get started in the group.  It's a sort of trip of refugees, military, locals, and the like that are going into town for supplies.  It's a decent way to join in if you want to have your character run into them.

There is also a psychiatrist, but they're an NPC and haven't been used or brought out.  If you want to do a doctor character, I think it could work since there's always a need for medical professionals, but I'd check with her first to avoid stepping on any toes.

Just wanted to say, real quick, that there's still plenty of time to join in if you want to be a part of the group.

Many of our survivors just had their first real brush with the infected, and are moving back to the base of operations trying to process everything, and possibly start pointing fingers as to what went wrong.

The next major part, and sort of end, to the Walmart event has been posted, to further increase the tension between the military and deputies.

I am going to hold off on posting more events for a few days, instead of getting another one going soon.  This is to let more people join up who are thinking about it, in addition to let people get caught up.

I do believe that you can go on by assuming that your character was always in the group. As there are alot of people in the prison not just NPCs and player led characters.

I haven't closed off any of the events yet, so you could jump in and write in the sort of orientation event, though I'd probably recommend against it, since a lot of people have moved on.

You could have your character there the whole time if you want, just having been in the background so to speak.

HannibalBarca has two characters that were wandering down a highway when I had one of the NPCs come and pick them up in a truck.  Mellific had one of her characters be picked up by a sheriff's deputy doing a random sweep of a neighborhood.  And DarkAngel111 and Mellific had characters just sort of walk up and join up with a group of people that were in an event in the surrounding areas.

I don't mind helping you, or anyone else out for that matter, with getting you started by directing NPCs and whatnot to get you to the group and going.

I'm going to drop a link here for anyone who might be interested in joining.

After listening to the feedback from others, getting their input and views on the state of the game, I've decided to launch this little event as a way to bring people together and bond a bit over some alcohol.

Pretty much it's a place where you can introduce your character, say hello, a couple of random facts, and sort of be a spark for some contact and bonding between characters.  I think it's a great way to introduce your character to the group, and a great way to strike up some friendship.

Kind of like an ice cream social, where everyone says two facts about themselves.  Just with some moonshine :)

And as always, I'm more than happy to get you filled in on what's been going on and get you started.  Just a PM away.
