Zealously Jaded

I have this beginning of a story, if anyone wants to carry on just PM me with your ideas or questions. This is a dark story, but pretty much open to whatever you want.

I hope you enjoy it :)

The city of Cascadia seemed like any other city, it was noted for being peaceful and largely unblemished by war or famine. Yet underneath the civilised façade lived a dark, twisted world dominated by fear and mistrust. Everyday just before dusk the ‘normal’ citizens would lock their doors and bar their windows, never venturing outside or opening their doors to strange knocks. Few people knew what lived in the dark and even fewer come back, but the ‘lucky’ few that managed to live through the night were changed, they become reclusive and obsessed with the darker side of life.

Those changed by the power of the night would line the streets at during the day, the most prevalent area was close to the many slaughter houses, muttering to themselves about strange monsters they have seen, their clothes torn and stained, their eyes glazed over, people tend to keep their distance from them, pretending they didn’t exist hoping that they would be removed the next night by those that stalked them.

It was mid-winter, the nights we're drawing in quickly, it was barely past noon when darkness fell over the city. The street we're empty, only a few brave or idiotic souls we're out and about. Snow had just started to fall coating the streets, the only sound that could be heard was from a lonely figure wandered the streets aimlessly. Evie pulled her thin shawl over her shoulders, but she didn't feel the cold nip at her. This was the first time she had been outside at night, but that didn’t seem to faze her, life had leached all the joy from her.

Evie’s dark brown eyes, once full of fire now dull and empty, shying away from other people, she felt she had nothing to live for. Her skin was as white as the snow her unshod feet now walked across, the one thing that made her stand out was the colour of fire, she let it fall down over her shoulders in soft ringlets. Many had begged her to cut it and sell it, she even considered it once or twice at the darkest time of her life, but she hadn't the heart. Her hair was the same colour as her mothers, Evie knew that from the small picture in the locket round neck. Having been given on her 10th birthday, minutes before she was taken from the orphanage and sent to the work house to earn her keep.

Now she was 18 the monotony of daily life had broken her spirit, today she wanted it to end. Slipping out the door before it was locked for the night, Evie knew she had nothing to live for, whether it was the cold or the monsters in the darkness that got her first, tonight was going to be her last night.
