It comes down to numbers.. they HAVE to get every seat they can in the senate.. so now that they are stuck with him.. they will back him.. of course he'll pay for it six years from now. The party might be behind him now but Rove and the rest of the planners WILL find someone that can replace him next time around. And they WILL back that pony.

And god help him if he fucks up in anyway that they can leave him hanging and have the governor replace him.

With any luck, Akin will loose the seat, and that will be the end of his political career.

His days are numbered. Even if he got elected the 'parachute' from the party is gone. The first mistake will kill his Senate career and as soon as that is done.. so is he.

Four years ago, Todd Akin said that doctors routinely give abortions to women that aren't pregnant. I submit that this man is too stoopid for Congress. Even the dumbed down Congress with all the anti-reality based Tea Party politics.

I've never heard his name, but right now my imagined pronunciation sums up what I think of him.

I'm pronouncing the last syllable as 'kwah' and the first with a short 'u'.

I honestly can't believe that he was stupid enough to put this into print. This hurts to see these sorts of things come into being. It's like watching the last 50 years of civil rights and change being undone.

Toss in fun things like several Tea party types saying that the 14th amendment needs to go.

Something really nasty is going on and we are teetering on the edge of a arty being run by men who want to stay in control so bad they are ALMOST willing to use Mein Kampf as a roadmap

"Rape culture" in France - among the high and low

Just as an aside from another country, the Department of Justice in central Paris (I think this is the old Palais de Justice, about 200 m from the Notre-Dame and the Louvre) has been the site of protests against a big gang-rape case (fourteen men gangbanging and/or serially banging two girls, many times over a period of years) in a Paris suburb, case ending in most of the men getting acquitted and the four remaining given relatively light sentences. Only one of them will actually be going to jail now that the trial is over, for about two years (the rest of it was counted as having been served while in custody). Outraged feminist activists, some of them topless, climbed on the windows of the building, thronged at the entrance and confronted police; a catholic nun joined in and posed with the topless ladies.

*Louise frowns, but smiles at the protests*

Article here, with a truly fantastic slideshow.

The case is widely seen as the tip of an iceberg of similar macho rape and trafficking culture in the lower-class (and immigrant) suburbs of Paris

Last week, allegations of rape against Dominique Strauss-Kahn (who might have been president of France now but for...) - not the New York case but events that were supposed to have taken place years earlier - were thrown out of court. A few days later, DSK made an interview and admitted that he had been into a wealthy swingers' lifestyle for many years, but stated that nothing illegal or amoral had been going on and declared that the French govenment is "waging war on lust" through its courts and laws. Further developments are eagerly awaited.

I am just so happy that he lost his running position within the Republican party when he made this incredibly ignorant and stupid statement... But I am also afraid of what will happen in the future with people like Mitt and his running mate who believe things like if your asleep, if your drunk, if you are impaired its not rape... Rape is rape. I don't understand why there needs to be a gradation of it... Unwanted physical touching is sexual harassment taking it to the point where you force yourself on someone else in a sexual manner under any circumstance is rape...

So now, Todd Akin is calling Claire McCaskill (his opponent) a dog. And one of his campaign advisers later tweeted, "If Claire McCaskill were a dog, she’d be a ‘Bullshitsu’.”

Let's see, dogs are loyal, affectionate, fiercely protective of 'their' people...  I wonder what he'd do if she ran with that line of thinking.  Not only could she highlight some positive qualities in herself (done cleverly), but it would also keep the fact that he stooped to that level in the public's eye.

There is a deep-seated and difficult issue here.

I'm going to use France and the UK as my examples as they're the places I'm most familiar with but from my understanding issues like this afflict much of the Western world. In short the government... and notably the police... have a long and fairly ignoble history of (not) engaging with immigrant communities. For many years racism... both individual and institutional... characterised almost all interactions between the two. Thankfully in recent years (generally as a result of well publicised scandals) this racism has been somewhat stamped out... or at least minimised... and while there are clearly still issues to be dealt with the situation is much better than it has been.

The negative effect of this is that police have been hesitant to go into immigrant communities for certain crimes... at least partially due to fear of the perception of racism. In France you can look at the above case and in the UK at the Rochdale grooming ring to see examples of situations where the police have at best trod too lightly at and worst deliberately ignored or minimised sex crimes within immigrant communities. From the evidence that's come to light it appears there was a deliberate decision to make avoiding being perceived as racist the priority over giving a full investigation to alleged crimes.

There's clearly a balance that must be struck. On one hand we certainly don't want to return to the "bad old days" of institutional racism and the police simply looking for the nearest immigrant to blame a crime on... but just as certainly we don't want the horrific offences mentioned above to be allowed to be committed. Finding that balance is something that I hope can be quickly done.

(In danger of dragging us off-topic)

While I think Strauss-Kahn is a fairly vile man... and that he must answer for the rape accusations... he has somewhat of a point here. Far too often the welcome strengthening of both the law and intent against sexual assault and other such crimes is combined with a most unwelcome assault on alternative sexualities. In the UK for example the tragic murder of Jane Longhurst was followed by the equally tragic (for entirely different reasons) Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008, notably Section 63 and a general hardening of attitudes on sexual conduct including a number of prosecutions under the Obscene Publications Act. Most notably for anyone who posts on E from the UK, particularly in the NC or Extreme sections may well be breaking the law these days following the prosecution of Gavin Smith... a frankly horrible man but one who was also convicted for online chats which the judge explicitly stated was clearly a fantasy and had no possibility of ever happening the future.

Which is fairly worrying.

Callie Del Noire

True, but in the comparison to E users and Gavin Smith, you have a few differences. We don't allow any of his pedofillia actions on the board. Particularly the exchange of kiddie porn or role play involving minors in sexual situations.  The admins would come down on you like a ton of bricks.

I do see the slippery slope involved though. And have said in the past we in the US need a review board on the offenders list here in the US. How many folks are on it because a girl/boy friends parents didn't like you? Or for urinating in public? There was one guy put on it because he was naked in his own home and the TRESPASSING woman and her child saw him from his own enclosed back yard.

Oh absolutely.

But Gavin Smith wasn't prosecuted explicitly because his online chats related to paedophilia (I note I believe he was also prosecuted for possessing indecent images of children as well but I'm just referring to the prosecution for his online chats). He was prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act, which outlaws publications which "if taken as a whole, such as to tend to deprave and corrupt persons who are likely, having regard to all relevant circumstances, to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it". That applies to anything, not just paedophilia. Considering the nature of the Ex and NC sections I can see how many could be construed to fall within that clause.

I'd hoped that the UK had got past this when the Girls Scream Aloud case fell apart but then this case comes along; notably it was heard at the Court of Appeal which means it has precedence and lower courts have to follow it unless they can distinguish their cases.

The fact is, if I was judging a case at a lower court I'd find it near impossible to distinguish between a case such as Mr Smith's and a case of a story on E that also featured "depraved" sexual conduct, be it rape, bestiality, vore or a whole host of other extreme kinks, however much my personal opinion differed on whether it should be illegal; I'm bound by precedent.

And that's deeply worrying.

Being raped is awful. But then having your body hijacked for nine months by the rapist's baby... and your life transformed by having to raise that child and have that child in your life until one of you dies... yeah, it's the stuff of horror movies given life.
