Trieste

The lightening sky was a dim grey mingled with violet. There was a paler lavender patch in the East, heralding the spot where the sun would soon rise. As all of the sailors made their way to the aged but sturdy airship in berth nine, the tall form of the Captain greeted them. No one was actually sure whether Captain Madison was male or female - Mad had long silvery hair that was out of sorts with the Captain's unlined, young-looking face. The Captain dressed in fitted flying leathers that were good for protecting the body from the elements, but bad at displaying gender differences in anatomy. Whatever the case, Mad shook each new sailor's hand, welcoming him or her on board the Ida Leigh. A brief speech was given on the basic rules of the boat - everyone works, everyone gets paid. If you don't work, you don't get paid. And if you get mouthy, you get tossed overboard.

Simple as that.

And then the ship set sail. The first day, she made fantastic time, blessed by a clear sky and a jolly wind. It wasn't until that evening that the storm clouds started rolling in. The ship pulled higher to rise above the worst of the storm, but the tall thunderheads were too high for the ship to get out altogether. Rain lashed the deck, driving all but those on night watch into their berths. The storm battered the ship all night, receding only in the hours before sunrise. It wasn't until breakfast was being served that it was noticed the Captain was missing. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the Captain's quarters were empty, and Mad was nowhere to be found on the entire ship. Some panicked, some got angry. Some wanted to turn around, and some were determined to push ahead. One thing was certain, though: a new Captain needed to be selected. The best way to go about it was clearly a democratic system, and so the newly introduced crew would face their first challenge by electing a Captain.

GM Note: Role PMs have been sent. If you didn't receive a role PM, you should PM Trieste. The Captain in this game is equivalent to the Sheriff in other games, which means that they have no special powers other than acting as a tiebreaker in the event of a tie. Remember to copy Trieste on any PMs sent regarding this game!

Cyrano Johnson

Cyrano could still feel the ship juddering under his feet, for all that the storm had receded some hours earlier... but the effect didn't show in his face, which remained as smooth and affable as the moment he'd stepped aboard and shook Captain Mad's hand, unruffled as the waters of a calm sea reflecting back the endless dominion of the clouds. He continued to smile, Buddha-like and unflappable, at all about him, even as arguments raged through the ship's mess about the best way to proceed; and he mashed together his morning meal of hard tack and albatross fat, chewing it almost absent-mindedly and swallowing as though he cared more for the form of the act than for hard fact of sustenance.

To the casual onlooker, it might almost seem as if something was missing from him. His eyes betrayed nothing, his hands were steady, his plump cheeks unwavering, his whole corpulent form utterly unmovable, like a mountain set upon the decks of the Ida Leigh. He had touches of silver hair in his wild, unruly, extravagant Afro, subtle hints of lines in his coppery skin, touches of wear on his leather jerkin and on the colourful waistcoast beneath as it stretched to contain his prosperous belly. An old man? Or older, anyway? Perhaps many voyages had inured him to the hardships of airborne life. Yes, perhaps that was it.

Certainly, however much he'd run to fat, there were hints of a strong and stolid frame underneath the softness. His gnomic gaze could be just a front for a fundamental lack of self-knowledge, his whiskers and his patchy beard the side-effects of long, beery stays in aerial ports where the brothels were plentiful and razors and mirrors scarce. Perhaps he was one of those legions of men who'd shipped out year after year, chasing who-knew-what among the clouds and beneath the celestial firmament, unable to name even to himself the object of his desires, the animating spirit that drove him forth to voyage after voyage of thankless toil.

Yes. Perhaps that was it.

Whatever the case, he wasn't shy about putting forth his vote for the new Captain. Had he observed the man he'd chosen? Known him previously, or by reputation? No hint of either option showed on his round, beaming, affable face as he stood, gestured expansively, and declared himself to be Starlequin's man!

The startlement from those around him was clear, but it didn't budge him an inch. Indeed, he seemed not to notice it. "Yes, Starlequin," he affirmed, gesturing vaguely in the direction of the elect without even looking at him. "The choice is clear... and I think I'll find more than a few of you to agree, if you'll take a sounding of your inner workings." This enigmatic pronouncement delivered with all due baritone solemnity, he grinned, dipped his mash of hard tack and albatross fat in a mug of ship's grog, swilled down the oily product and, with a last theatrical gesticulation, sat down at his bench in the ship's mess to continue his morning meal.

Starlequin

Star 'Steps' LeQuin lay in his bunk, stripped to his skivvies and staring out through the ceiling into the past, haunted by uncertainty and regret. No sleep again; damn nightmares. Ruddy storm didn't help matters none, either. Twenty years sailin' these confounded skies, and still he'd yet to learn how to ignore the maelstrom's song. First rays of dawnlight were beginnin' to warm the hull, and Star kissed the cool lips of a bottle with his own to rouse himself with a bit 'a bourbon's heat. He had no stomach for breakfast, but life on a ship was always a matter of Eat Now, or Forever Mourn Your Peas. To the mess hall, then. But first, the matter of pants.

Looked like most of the crew was already gathered and stuffin' their faces when Star hobbled in and joined them. The familiar feel of eyes swivelling toward him rolled off his back. Nothing new, really. A man in his condition was used to gawkers. He made a bit of a show of it as he stood in the mess line to collect his tray, reaching down to his bare right 'leg' and re-tightening the coils in his knee and ankle. Not that they needed tightening, really; he'd given each gear a full hundred turns the day before, ensuring the aluminum-and-copper altlimb would function for a solid three days before winding down. And these days, it was rare to meet crew what had never seen an augman before. But Steps had learned it never hurt to give the demonstration anyway. Kept any grass snouts from hangin' their biscuits 'n' all.

He carried his tray to a nearby seat and sat down quietly to eat. Glop and mush, mush and glop. *Ruhe meiwei. Steps dug in with an eye roll of resignation, largely ignoring the growing commotion among the other crew members until he was nearly half done. Someone was...missing?

The Captain was missing?...!

'Interesting start to an interesting day,' LeQuin thought as he sat silent at the table, twirling his fork slowly in what remained of his rations. Word of an impromptu election reached him via the crew's chatter, and a shiver rippled through him. That feeling again. Something so...familiar. He was still contemplating the matter when he heard his name called from behind him, and one eyebrow lifted in confusion and mild disbelief as he rotated on the bench to find his advocate -- a weatherly, pudding-shaped fellow with a beatific expression on his face. He remained smiling as Star met his eyes, and continued chowing down. Damn. Looked like he meant it.

Star ran a hand through his thinning hair and lightly scratched the back of his head before running his hand over the angry red line that circled his throat. After a few moments' thought, he shrugged and pointed at himself, shaking his head gently. Then he looked around and scanned every face in attendance, until finally he found the one he was looking for. Perhaps the one person he could trust on this infernal ship. He lifted one hand and pointed, determined, toward Sarena.

(*How delicious.)
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got.

Kendra

The trek to Shearsdale docks had been arduous enough but Kendra had finally made it, anything to be on a ship again. It mattered not to her that the ship was rumoured to be haunted, all night long as she had waited for the morning the ship would sail, she had heard little else. Drunken sailors swearing that any man or woman take aboard the Ida Leigh would not be returning. Her one good eye had stared deep into the dregs of her tankard before draining it and putting their tales down to poppy cock. It was only now standing aboard the vessel itself that she felt the sheer weight of those stories coming back like a stark reminder that this could be her last voyage anywhere. The money, she reminded herself taking her few belongings and setting them up below deck amongst the others.

She was used to the ribbing, the jeers and calls from other sailors. Women after all were said to be cursed on a ship, a redhead all the worse but it meant they stayed away from her which was good, she'd keep her head down and get on with her job. In any confined space, it is easy to get to know those about you and by the time the storm hit hard Kendra knew felt she knew enough of the crew. There was always secrets of course and the strange feeling of foreboding never once left her.

The morning after the storm seemed to be filled with a silence rarer than any she had met before. The rigging was checked and her hands felt burned and sore from doing her part on the mizzen stay but she'd not complain once, it would bear her no good at any rate. Pushing her goggles atop her brown leather pilots cap revealed the black patch over her left eye, her hair in many long plaits was pulled back and fastened with a thin leather string. Her clothing was never feminine, loose and many layers, she wore knee length breeches and boots, shirt, vest and jacket ... all worn and restitched.

Everyone that lingered in the mess smelled alike to her now, the stench of sweat and unwashed bodies pervaded the air but there was more than that. The Captain was missing and she didn't so much as blink her one good eye. Call her superstitious but maybe there was something to those stories after all.
"Ship is haunted, a new capt'in won't do us no good" she quipped sitting herself down to eat the muck that passed for food, she shoveled the first spoon into her mouth and looked about her. Was the ship haunted? Was it more than that? Someone had to take control but who ... who was better for the job than any one else? Steps right leg was probably a better bet than most of them here, she smirked to herself but if a name had to be called ... "Saffron!" she called out before takin another mouthful.

Teo Torriatte

This could be a wonderful new beginning...

Luna was more at home in the air than on the ground, having been the daughter of another captain and spent much of her youth getting to know every nook and cranny of his ship. Now in her eighteenth year, she had more or less filled out into a fairly attractive young woman, with long raven hair, pale skin and a slender figure, with smallish breasts and just enough curves to not be mistaken for a man. She was wearing a simple affair of a fairly tight, white blouse and a skirt that ended well above the knee.. not out of vanity but out of necessity, as she was well aware that her heritage as a captain's daughter would get her no favor on this ship, that she would have to work along side everyone else.

If anything, it might get her less favor, as her father and Madison were known to have been rivals. But Luna tended to stay out of her father's affairs. She had herself to worry about now, and she was just fine with having to make her own way.

Well, she had been fine until the the captain turned up missing, anyway. She had been doing a pretty good job of mingling with the crew, but she was quiet and shy, and tended to keep to herself except to say a soft 'hullo' or 'please pass the bucket' or some such thing. Even the storm, itself, fairly brutal as it was, hadn't really phased Luna all that much... her earliest memories were of falling asleep in very similar conditions, and she could still hear her father's voice telling her everything was going to be alright. Her father had never been wrong until today.

And now everyone was getting together to elect a new captain... and here was Luna with no ties to anyone whatsoever and with a possibly perceived chip on her shoulder thanks to the former rivalry between her father and the missing captain.

A wonderful new beginning, indeed...

Almost as an afterthought, she whirled around and gestured literally at random, "May as well be That Girl Analise," before she found a spot to herself from which to watch the election play itself out.

That Girl Analise

Analise smiles softly "I thank ye, but my kind's suited t' kitchen work" she eyed the crowd "An' don' make any o' yer 'woman' jokes, neither. There're more men in that kitchen than me!" she laughed. "No, I think Falanor's suited t'the type,"

Mr Bigglesworth

Mr. B. winked at Ana "ahh, I thinks you'd do a fine job, but I also think Sarena would make an excellent choice."

Kazyth

Well.  This would be interesting.  First time on an airship, that was certain.  Hell, first time off the farm, really.  Being a man who was used to stable ground under his feet, it was all he could do to make it to the railing and empty his lunch, rather than have it splatter all over the deck when the airship lifted off.  Not that the view of grown flying away from him did any good to help settle matters.  A swig of water and a spit over the side (which sadly hit an unlucky stevadore down below) later, and he was right as rain again.  Yep.  Right as rain, just hanging here in the sky, and totally not thinking at all about the ship suddenly dropping like a rock onto the... yes, onto the rocks below.  Nope, not even a little.

"... why did I look?"

Oh, wait.  No time to be sick again, they're voting for the Captain, right?  Yeah.  Yeah, Captain.  Bronzed muscles flexed idly as he sat there on a barrel, coiling a length of rope carefully, sweat already trickling down his bare chest and arms.  Gotta give it it's due, all that farm work at least gave him a body worth lookin' at.  "I... I don't know anyone here, honestly.  But Sarena seems to be trusted.  That works for me."  Aaaaand that appeared to be all he had to say on the matter, after which he set aside the rope and used a bandanna to tie back his loose and somewhat shaggy chestnut hair.
A rose by any other name... still has thorns you can prick someone with. - Me.

Ryven

He'd found the listing in the newspaper though it was rather anonymous as to who he would be working for.  The day he was to embark, he showed up to find he'd be working on an airship.  "Well, would you look at that?"  He said more to himself than anyone else as he stared up at it's grand scale.  It wasn't long before he set about learning his way around the kitchen within the ship.  It seemed workable enough though it needed a little touching up.  The only inhabitant thus far was a rather old looking automaton who carried cans of preserved food stuffs to a pot to dump them inside.  It's metallic limbs whirred as it moved, opening the cans, dumping them in a large steam kettle, and then dropping them in a garbage chute to be shuttled down to the refuse chamber.  Ryven took a peek into the kettle it worked over.   The slop inside looked a rather ominous greyish color as it bubbled away, and the smell was as unappealing as its color.

Luckily for Ryven, there was a dry storage that had been well kept because it seemed the kitchen automaton had not ventured there.  In little time at all, he had whipped up a batch of small chocolate tartlets.  The fresh supplies that had arrived just before departure seemed to supplement the necessary ingredients he needed to finish the desserts.  "Well, at least they'll have something sweet to wipe that awful taste from their mouth with," he said.  He stowed the desserts in the refrigerator before retiring to his provided room.

It was the next day when he woke to find all the other passengers and crew gathered in a panic.  The captain was gone?  The ship hadn't been gone but a day and the voyage was already going awry.  "How about Kendra?"  He said.  "I hear she is handy behind the wheel of a ship."

He left the others to find a meager breakfast spread that made his eye twitch slightly.  Toast that was cold and soggy from butter.  The jam had to be as old as the ship.  The tea tasted bitter, and the oatmeal was too heavy on the cinnamon.  What was that blasted robot up to?  "We have to get these people some better food," he muttered to himself and went to the kitchen straight away.

Lord Mayerling

Mayerling’s old gray eyes blinked slowly, silently giving his respects to the Captain and the skies to which he now belonged. It wasn’t the first time a captain had been lost on one of his voyages, though the event was far from expected. Ironically, it made Mayerling feel twenty years younger, when once he had plied the same skies in ships even more flimsy than the Ida Leigh.

He puffed a long draw on his pipe, his legs bending instinctively as the Ida Leigh caught a warm draft and surged to the right. Something told him that he was the only one aboard who actually got any sleep the previous night. Still, morning came with sad revelation. “May the winds be forever at your back, Captain Madison. May you and Ida be forever joined in infinite eternity.”

Mayerling knew better than to be panicked or angry. When a ship is in the sky, only her crew matters; they must now be everything Ida Leigh needed. The prospect actually amused him; one last adventure for an old sailor.

His knee made a distinctive hiss and rattle as he joined the other passengers that had gathered on the poop deck: the hiss from the actuator engaging, causing the internal gears to grind together as his knee kicked forward, allowing him to walk. He smiled as he found his man, as if there had ever been any doubt. He put his hand on the shoulder of Remiel. “You look a sturdy mate. Something tells me you didn’t let the storm wet your pantaloons.”

SunshineSparkle

This mystery-filled sea life was still unfamiliar to her.Why exactly had she wanted in? Never had the question about the real reasons behind her desire to join the ship crossed her thoughts.Curiosity and a quest of experience, these were the it factor driving her to jump head first in this adventure. She had of course heard about the curse on the Ida Leigh,as a rational and sensible kind of woman, certainly such unfounded rumors could not affect her convictions

The ground shifted unsteadily beneath Sunshine's feet as she entered the room, footsteps barely audible amidst the chaos and confusion dominating the ship for hours now,a teeth-shattering headache made her rub her temples in frustration, hoping to ease her pain if only the slightest. She had been working with the rest of her crew repairing whatever damage could be fixed
A sigh escaped from between her lips at the aching of her sleepless eyes.Captain Madison's disappearance was as intriguing as his mysterious persona,no one knew for sure if he's a he or a she.None of this mattered now as their only preoccupation was finding a decent replacement for the captain

Food did not even register in her mind as she sipped on her coffee.Everything appeared to be normal aboard, each keeping their insecurities and anger to themselves.Eh,she was doing just the same
"Me thinkin' Sarena good for the job.The woman appears to know her way 'round a ship " She left her coffee cup in a salute gesture, wanting to mark a new beginning of their continuing journey. She wished for a semblance of piece after this night's event

Niferbelle

Niferbelle glanced down at her calloused hands as the others talked, sighing at how ragged her nails had become though there was no relief for that. When you had to work for a living, your grooming habits became secondary to keeping the ship in the air. The wind blew strands of hair around her face and she sighed, reaching up to tuck them under her cap and keep them out of her eyes. One of things she liked best about being on a crew was the sense of order, of everyone knowing their place, and now, without a captain, chaos threatened to ensue. They could appoint another captain, of course, but there were no guarantees that the person they chose would be good at the job or even have the best interest of the crew in mind. She frowned slightly, irritated by all that had transpired.

"Talk about your proverbial shot in the dark," she quipped, her eyes sweeping over the  crew as she tried to make her choice. "Kendra, you seem sensible enough. You have my vote."

Galactic Druid

"Thank progress, another living person."Guy said as he saw Ryven. "I don't know shit about these things, help me out." He was literally wresting with the automaton, trying to win out space in front of the stove. "I didn't know if they hired anyone else for the kitchen, I was stating to worry it was just me and this old thing." It wasn't exactly east to get to know his new crewmates as he fought the thing off, but he tried, none the less. "Did you hear the ship's already lacking a captain? I wonder what they're going to do about it. Personally, I think they should put that lass Sarena in charge, but that's really not my call to make. All I want to do is, get away from the stove you outdated piece of, sorry, all I want to do is cook."

James Moriarty

The skies had surely never seen a man less at home in them than James.  Thin and mousy, his unkempt, thin dull brown hair plastered to his forehead, he ambled unsteadily down the squeaky hallway towards the mess hall.  Lurching against the door frame with a shift in the ship's position, he braced himself unsteadily and pulled off his absurdly thick, round glasses and rubbed the clear glass clean with his shirt.  Pushing them back onto the bridge of his nose, he peered at those assembled.  He had originally intended to come to try to stuff something down his throat, but already he was almost visibly green, stomach lurching in his belly.  Hearing rumor of the disappearance of the captain seemed only to unsettle him more.

Sitting at the end of one of the long benches, he leaned his head into his hands and then took a small sip of water from a copper cup, dulled with age and bearing the dents and nicks of many years of use.  Looking up, he squinted as he watched them tossing up their opinions on the best successor to lead this journey.  When there was a lull in the conversation, his reedy voice could be heard.  "Eh, uhm, I th-th-think that K-kendra seems like a n-nice choice.  We need a c-c-c-captain who knows her way around the s-s-sky."  He glanced nervously around and quickly buried his heads in his hands again.

Remiel

Remiel had to be summoned to the waist of the ship where all the others had gathered; as usual, he had been in the ship's engine room, shoulder-deep in the furnaces that produced the steam that kept the Ida Leigh airborne.  His face was a mask of greasy soot, his apparel, a pair of blackened and singed heavy overalls and a set of complementary thick leather gloves.  Hefting a five-sixteenths-cubit spanner over his shoulder, he peeled his goggles from his eyes, revealing the only bit of pink in an otherwise soot-and-ash-covered face.

He seemed nonplussed when informed of the captain's untimely disappearance.  Rubbing his nose with a grimy finger, he ruminated about possible candidates for Captain Madison's replacement.  "I'll throw my lot in with Kendra," he said with a shrug.  "She seems like a fine, upstanding woman."

Autumn Sativus

Saffron listened from a distance as the crew began taking votes on the new captain. So soon after they had discovered Captain Mad missing too. It seemed like something was wrong with this picture, but what other choice did they have than to appoint someone else and continue on their journey. It was a sad day aboard the Ida Leigh, but she could find no tears to shed for the lost captain, though a part of her wished that she could.

"Sarena will make a good Captain." she piped up from her distant post, nodding to the woman. She looked trustworthy.

Valerian

Val was a practical sort, or at least tried to be.  The captain's disappearance shook her, that much was plain, but panic would do no one any good.  Without a new captain, however temporary, they'd only find themselves in a worse situation, she was sure.

From her perch up in the rigging, she listened closely to the discussion below, brushing back a stray lock that had slipped from her ponytail.  Her interest was very genuine, of course, for the captain affected the entire atmosphere on any ship; but it was also a useful way to cover the worst of her uneasiness.  While she knew her job and considered herself a more modern sailor than some, unconcerned with such old-fashioned things as curses, she was still not able to dismiss this lightly.  If enough of the crew believed, that would be enough to bring danger on them all.

While she didn't agree with Kendra's idea that their choice of captain didn't mean much, Val did think she'd had the right idea with her vote.  "Yes, let Saffron have the job, if she wants it," she said, climbing nimbly down to the deck, her leggings and tunic no hindrance to her movements.  "Even if the ship is ill-fated -- curses can be broken as well as cast, I say.  And if we must turn back, that's no reason to despair in itself.  We'll still come through this well enough, I daresay."

Mithlomwen

(Been dealing with RL things so I haven't had a chance to write up a proper post, but I wanted to vote so I'm not holding up the works)

Mith glanced around and nodded her head in agreement with many.  "Kendra seems like a good choice."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Kye

Kyrsa said a silent prayer for the former Captain, but in truth she wouldn’t grieve much for the man.  She’d barely known him… or her.  She couldn’t believe that something like this had happened on her first cruise on the Ida Leigh, she should have stayed on her last ship.  She had a feeling this one was already cursed, and feared that it would take her down with it.

She brushed a strand of fiery red hair from her eyes as she glanced from one crew member to another, a thoughtful frown on her face as they quickly turned to picking a new Captain.  They needed leadership, it was true, but she didn’t know enough about the men and women she was serving with to make an educated choice.  She’d just have to hope that everyone else knew what they were doing for now.

Sarena looks to be able enough, she’ll do,” she said finally.  Time to get back to work…

Falanor

Falanor climbed down from the Crow's nest, a scowl on his face.  Of all the lousy luck...Cap'n missin'...new lads and lasses all about... The deep lines of his weather beaten, leathery skin made him look more angry than concerned, as he adjusted his belt and cutlass when his feet made contact with the deck.  "Either Sarena or Kendra would make fine Cap'n's, if an ya askin' my opinion," he grumbled as he scratched the days old stubble on his neck.

Realizing that he had to make a decision one way or the other, "Yet, I find myself havin' to back Kendra."  With that he walked his way to the abaft to collect some holystones to do deck work with, Blasted ship ain't gonna clean itself... he thought in another deep scowl.

The Last Standing

Trudging into the room with outstretched arms, Last let forth a tremendous yawn before sleepily inquiring what had happened to the strange, albeit capable captain.

Well, if there wasn't any risk, I wouldn't be here right now. Last rubbed his stubbled chin, feigning concern when deep down he was excited. The whole no work no pay mentality didn't swing with him, and now with the captain and accompanying rules gone, the sky-life was about to become a lot more interesting.

Late to the scene, Last saw there were two people close to becoming captain. Wanting to keep the race close, he cast his lot in with Kendra.

"I'm off to do some maintenance on the buoyancy conducting aerofoils," chirped the young man over his shoulder. He turned the corner and proceeding back to his quarters to finish his nap.

Sarena

None of this settled well with her.  A captain going missing before the ship was out a full day?  This did not bode well for the rest of their journey, now did it?

No, it never does.

Sarena finished rolling up a length of rope leaned her shoulder against the wall, crossing one ankle over the other as the others started naming their choice for the new captain.  She was surprised to hear her own name called, more than a few times.  She wasn't sure if it was a job she wanted or not, not that she'd turn her nose up at it.  The votes from her ship mates went a long way in boosting her confidence, though.

She nodded her head in Saffron's, "I dare say, she'd be a better fit."

Off in the corner of the mess the worn soles of a pair of Hessians that had been liberated from a drummer boy on a battlefield could be seen propped up on a table.  The fallen lad had no more use for them or the dark blue coat and tri-corn hat that he had given up without a word as one army fled while the other gave chase.  Behind the hard brown leather covers of a book one could see waves of russet hair pulled off to one side and secured with a gold clasp and a wealth of silk ruffles spilling out of the collar and neck line of the coat and the black leather jerkin beneath it.  Lace trimmed ruffles fell back from the slender feminine hands that held the book.

With a move almost too quick to follow the woman slammed the book shut and slapped it on the table crashing the front legs of her chair to the floor at the same time.  She shot to her feet, her legs sheathed in black leather trousers spread and the knuckles of her clenched fists resting on the wooden surface in front of her.

She had watched and listened and waited until she had learned all she could of the crew.  The death of the Captain had seemed inevitable and the rumors of the ship being haunted not something to sneeze at.  The cargo was still a mystery to her but there was time to sus that out.  After all it wasn’t going anywhere, now was it?

Now that the vote was nearly done and a bit close between the two leaders she made her declaration.  Meeting any gaze that turned in her direction with a hard, unwavering stare of stormy gray eyes she spoke.

desert ashes

It had taken longer she liked to find not only the intended ship, but enough sense after last night's tavern visit to navigate her way there.  When she did, and digested what was happening around her, Moirae felt the yearning to return to the tavern post haste.  As it was, she sighed a little, eyed all those around her warily.

"Might as well join the majority in this matter.  Sarena."

Kendra

Kendra's one good eye would surely have popped from its socket had she not firmly slapped her free hand over it, groaning as some of the crew voted for her. They were all obviously high from the stench of this ship and one another and not thinking straight. Her place was about the ship, she was a hand and nothing more and with only one good eye was likely to steer them off course as set them on it. She didn't bother to look at any of them, as soon as they docked again ... if they docked again, she'd wash her hands clean, take her money and find another ship to sail the vast blue skies. Even now all she wanted to do was get on with her job, there was far too much pressure and likely any captain of this vessel would find themselves much like Madison. Her only chance of that eventuality not occurring to her, was to change her vote for the one who was presently in the lead and secure her that position before any one thought to change votes as well.
"I've got me a boiler to check and a awning to restitch ... thanks for the vote of confidence mates .. but throw your luck in with Sarena" pushing her empty bowl aside she stood, up nodded to some of the crew before heading back out in to the fresh air of deck.

Trieste

With the final tally of the votes in, it was Sarena, then, that would get the really big Captain's hat. With that done, the crew had a ship to run, so they all settled into their various tasks. Dinner was, of course, much more pleasant than breakfast had been. Poor ol' Coggie hadn't been programmed for much more than mush, but with thinking-type people to guide him it was so much better. If anyone within earshot heard him chatter out that there were nitwits in his kitchen and meatbags interfering with his stew, well, he'd insist that it was just mishearing on their part. He would never call the meatbags such names.

So with a long day of travel behind them, the crew retired to their bunks, the swaying and clinking of the ship around them their only lullaby.

I'll be sending out the PM letting the Mutineers, Pirate, and Greenhorn know who their fellows are. Any night-active roles should PM me if they would like to use their ability.

Trieste

In the grey light of morning, the sailors wake to find that Lord Mayerling is nowhere to be found. His berth is empty and he is nowhere on the ship. An examination of his bunk turns up nothing suspicious - only the effects of a regular sailor. Whispers of mutiny and treason on the ship abound, so now it becomes time for the crew to decide who should pay for poor May's death.

Cyrano Johnson

#31
The second disappearance has had an effect on Cyrano Johnson's round and placid countenance. The monk-like calm of the day before is still there; the smile isn't. As he works in the rigging in the early dawn light -- moving about with surprising light-footedness for such a portly man -- his dark eyes scan back and forth across the deck with careful, calculating scrutiny. His mustaches bristle as if their hairs are the antennae of a mantis sensing danger.

"Airmen of my homeland," he suddenly tells a nearby mate, with an absent-mindedly affable story-spinner's air about him: "Used to have a method for sounding out who on a ship was carrying a curse... or a secret." He doesn't wait for a response as he goes on. "They believed that if you trusted to the Wind, what bears us up and carries us onward, the Wind would point you out a way."

Pulling a colourful kerchief from a pocket inside his leather coat, he looks down in a moment of contemplation... and then abruptly clambers his way down from the rigging with a practised agility. As his feet make contact with the deck, he seems to accidentally lose his grip on the kerchief, which promptly whips away in the stiff breeze to dance and whirl its way toward its destiny... and drawing a squawk of surprise from the thin, sweaty-looking young man whose face it flies into. Cyrano turns for a moment to meet the boy's eyes, noting how green around the gills he looks, how shaky and anxious.

The fat man blinks for a moment, as if in surprise at the Wind's choice. But after a moment he shrugs, gives the young man an apologetic nod, and heads off to have a little chat with the new Captain regarding his suspicions about James Moriarty.

Beguile's Mistress

A musical laugh comes from the quarter deck as BeMi rounds a mast.

"The wind blows where it will regardless, matey, but where you stand can influence what it carries and where."  Looking around at the others watching she gives a wink.

"I want more evidence than that, me lads and lasses."  Clear and direct her stare lands on each and every one of them on deck as though she could see into their very souls to divine the truth then whips out a bit of lace to hold aloft and lets the wind carry it toward the portly gentleman.

"I'll vote when there is a bit more reason to the discussion," she states before walking away.

Autumn Sativus

Saffron sat awake in her cabin throughout the night but heard nothing of the commotion. Perhaps if she had been wandering the ship as she usually did when the crew was sleeping, she would have been able to save the poor man. Maybe, just maybe. The sadness of Mayerling's death weighed on her as she heard of it, the group gathering on the deck to decide who must be responsible for the deaths so they could be taken from the ship.

The gears spun in her head as she looked over the group, wondering who could possibly be responsible. There was something about the way Cryano acted that made her feel he was trying to pose as something she knew he was not. "Cyrano where were you last night?"

James Moriarty

#34
After a difficult night with a less than cooperative stomach, James was pale -- paler still when he heard the news of Lord Mayerling's disappearance.  Out on the deck, in the open air, he felt a little better.  He squinted against the bright light of the Sun and looked around, then down on the tiny Earth below.  The wind whipped at his hair, and he hazarded a small smile.

And then a large, colorful rectangle of cloth flew over his face, causing him some surprise and setting him to a few moments of awkward, clumsy antics as his hands grabbed and pulled at whatever had just obscured his view.  Cyrano's words made him frown, and he tossed the kerchief to the ground with an irritated gesture.  Propping his glasses up once again, he lifted one timid finger and made to speak, but then heard Beguile's Mistress' words and sighed, relaxing once again.  She had spoken true -- annoyed though he was at the baseless and false accusation, he could harbor no ill-will.  People were scared, and willing to lash out for all manner of fanciful reason.

He couldn't deny himself a little smile when Saffron's vote was cast -- fair's fair -- but his own suspicions were settling on someone else.  He was about to try again to speak when another wave of nausea hit him, and he made to the edge of the boat.  Just in case.

When he spoke next, it was merely a croak.  "You seem like a hardened woman, Niferbelle -- not that I know much of such things..."  His voice trailed off to a low mutter as he shrank to the edge of the gathering.

Niferbelle

Niferbelle was trying to keep her head down and lose herself in work to avoid thinking about how people were disappearing. Not just the captain, no, another was gone now and there could be no doubt something nefarious was afoot. Hearing James' ill-advised comment, she turned to face him, hands planted on her hips, and gave him a sharp look.

"Hard enough to tell you to piss off," she snorted then glanced about the deck, taking a moment to think things over. "When we were choosing a captain yesterday, Moirae looked tired, like she'd been up half the night -- that would be the night the captain disappeared. Right now she's the one that worries me."

That Girl Analise

"An' wha' of it, Mr. Moriarty? Do th' hardened women scare ye?" she said. "Perhaps too much o' a threat t' ye?"

Sarena

The sound of her boots on the deck got lost in the wind and the accusations being thrown about as Sarena approached the gathering crew.  This is no good.  First night on the job and one of the crew disappears. She checked her pocket watch, muttering to herself, "Yep, barely a full 24 hours as captain...has to be a record."

She scowled as she looked up, "Now everyone just calm down.  Curse or no, we got a job to do."

She looked around from face to face, she barely knew any of them but one of them stuck out to her.  Who in their right mind turned down the chance to captain a ship like this?  Sure, the take was the same at the end of their journey, but the prestige in being the one to lead the crew?  That stayed with a person.  "Kenda! I'd be interested to hear what you were up to last night."

Kazyth

Well, this hasn't been a good trip at all thus far.  Captain gone in the middle of the the previous night, someone else vanishing the night after, and now it's all terror and pointing fingers.  "I'm more of a lover than a lyncher," he murmured softly, just barely enough to be heard, busying himself mostly with securing some errant rigging.  "Whoever looked tired doesn't seem as important as who was quickest to start pointing blame.  Cyrano seems awfully intent on directing focus elsewhere."

Starlequin

Star wandered the ship, tending his duties as needed in grim silence. Another restless night. Another anxious morning. Another crewmate gone. That feeling again. Dammit. His stomach growled in rebellion as he hauled the aethertube maintenance equipment across the deck, thoughts only partially focused on a busted panel. Lot of scuttlebutt on the way to and fro; lot of voices singin' out in suspicion, baseless or not. Made him wonder. Lost crew. Lost captains. Lost cargo. Unshakable sense of uneasy familiarity. Could the Ida really be cursed?

Worse...could he?

LeQuin squared his jaw and knelt by the troublesome panel, popped its hinges and set to testing the aether flow. Didn't matter. Had a job to do. Wouldn't get any easier daydreamin' 'bout phantoms and haunted berths. Wouldn't get easier with crew lookin' over each others' shoulders and bitin' each other in the ass, neither. Still, if there was skullduggery about, Star wasn't without a suspect of his own. He shook his head as Kaz voiced his own opinion; couldn't go 'round blamin' a man just 'cause he had the nerve to speak up first. Never get any chatter done that way, and chatter was their best weapon if there were villains about.

Naw, there was someone on board that struck Star wrong, but it weren't Johnson. Her, though...somethin' about her didn't sit right at all. Never knew an honest sailor to wrap in that sort of finery. And weren't she awful chipper-seemin' this mornin', laughin' so merrily and strollin' about as if on a pleasure cruise. And keepin' her thoughts to herself, claimin' lack of evidence. There weren't gonna be no evidence, and everyone on the ruddy boat knew it. Only chance any of 'em had was sharin' thinkin', and she had to know it, so why the mum? 'Cause she weren't sure yet who else was fit to take a knife in the back? Aye...LeQuin was bound and certain he'd not risk bein' alone any time soon with that Beguile's Mistress.

Luna couldn't believe another had already disappeared. What was going on, anyway? This certainly wasn't what she had signed up for, but it's not like she could do anything about it. She thought about going to the new captain and begging her to turn the ship around, but she didn't want to soil her father's legacy like that. So she thought about the situation, and couldn't help but wonder what Mr. Bigglesworth was up to last night.

Kendra

Kendra kept her temper in check though wanting to toss the spanner from her tool belt at the new captain was very tempting. Hadn't she changed her vote so that she could take control, some job she was doing of that. It seemed as if the ship was going down hill fast and maybe, just maybe the new captain had her own hand in that. Wasn't it just far too easy to start pointing the finger and aiming the blame places but as she looked around it seemed just about every one else had the same idea. Save their own skins and without any proof lay the blame on anyone at all. Well ... in fairness to Sarena at least she had asked the right question just to the wrong person was all.

Kendra sighed wanting nothing more than to lift her eyepatch and give the hollowed socket a good rub but refrained from doing so.
"I was in the boiler room ... I have a nice fresh steam burn on my arm here for proof" she said without malice, "I think you need to get your ship in order Cap'in, befor' they all start tossin' people overboard. Panicked people are capable of doin anythin'."
She looked to Beguiles Mistress and wondered how long it would take the crew to toss her over with all her high and mighty ways.

Remiel

Remiel blinked soot from his eyes as the fingers of accusation and suspicion were leveled all around him.  As the ship's engineer, his area of expertise was engines and flywheels and crenellated gears, not politics and paranoia.  He knew exactly how much pressure a steam five-gallon Weatherby chamber could withstand, and what kind of actuators best produced the lift and drag that moved the Ida Leigh's sails, but he had no idea why someone would toss the captain overboard during the night.

It was clear that there was foul play afoot, and yet there was precious little information to go on to help him deduce who among them might have done the foul deed.  The only objective fact he had to go on was that someone wanted Lord Mayerling out of the way, and the only thing he knew about Lord Mayerling was that he had voted for him, Remiel, for captain.   Remiel, obviously, wasn't the culprit.  Who, then?

In times like these, when one guess was as good as another, he decided to vote randomly.  "I notice we haven't heard yet from Mr. Bigglesworth," he pointed out.  It could be an accusation, or it could equally be just a harmless observation.

Ryven

Even the clunking of the steam powered engines and the hiss and whine of the kettles in the kitchen could not stop the news from reaching his ears.  Ryven was a little startled that Mayerling would simply vanish like that.  Perhaps it was a mere accident.  After all, the man hadn't but one good leg, so it was entirely possible that he slipped while traversing one of the upper decks and plummeted right to his death.  Of course, the decks wouldn't have been so treacherous if they hadn't been swabbed and left wet.

"Tell me, Kyrsa, did you forget to display the wet floor sign after swabbing the decks?  It would be quite dangerous for anyone let alone a man with a wooden leg," he said whilst raising one blond eyebrow.

Edit: type-o fix.

Valerian

Val hesitated, listening to the discussion.  With so little evidence to go on, she was loath to accuse anyone, yet she also sensed she would not be able to get away with refraining from accusing anyone.  When Ryven finished, she nodded, though slowly and doubtfully.  "Yes, perhaps it was Kyrsa, however unintentionally.  Or perhaps nothing is unintentional on a cursed ship," she added, quietly, the words not quite a dark joke, feeling a rush of superstitious dread, however hard she tried to fight against it.

The Last Standing

Once again Last arrived later than most to the bustling upon the deck. The crowd bickered before him, scratching his chest sleepily. He caught bits of sentences, until he ascertained that poor Mayerling was now missing as well.Captain Mad is one thing, but a new deckhand? This didn't sit well with him at all. This wasn't the kind of fun he sought.

He scanned the mass of gesticulating limbs and  ruddy faces, among which he spied a frail man, his teeth chattering in fright.

Last knew that the infirm ones would be the first to give into a curse if there was one, so, with a heavy heart, he threw in his two cents.

"I'm sorry, but I just can't seem to trust you, James Moriarty."

desert ashes

All there seemed to be was speculation and assumption.  At least, those were the sounds, the voices, that welcomed Moirae to the grim reality around them.  Why couldn't she have missed this ship like so many others?  Surely one more hour in the tavern would have been better than surrounded by this.  Rubbing a hand over her face, a wary but brief glance passed to the one who'd murmur her name, she inwardly prayed for a moment of restful sense.  It wasn't going to come -- not here.

"To join the confused masses, I, too, think Cyrano may have something to hide.  Pray, my forgiveness if you are not the murderer, but I doubt any here are truly innocent."

Back on deck from the netherregions of the ship BeMi paused near Star Le Quin to admire the quality of his work.  One could never pay to much attention to the drives of an airship she knew from bitter experience having sailed with a crew destined for disaster due to sloppy maintenance.  Her once pristine shirt had a smudge here and there and the leather was scuffed in a few places.  With her tri-corn pushed back from her forehead and brass-buttoned coat draped over an arm she strode to the rail and looked out over the land below drawing in great draughts of fresh air.

"One would almost think, from this great height of ours, that we are above all strife and turmoil, wouldn't ye?"  Turning and leaning back with elbows resting on the side of the ship she surveyed the crew once again.  "Aye, we lost the captain and a good mate and listening to the lot of you it isn't easy to pick one of us to blame though blame we must.  I bear no grudge against ye," BeMi stated looking at Star and Kendra.

"Tis a difficult task we've set ourselves and one made all the harder by Cyrano wouldn't you say?"

Last call for voting and/or changing votes - I plan to move things along in about 10 hours. :)

Kye

Kyrsa couldn’t quite mask the shock when not one, but two of her crew-mates expressed their concerns about her.  For a long moment she couldn’t think beyond that fact, the fear that she would be wrongly accused of such a horrible thing making her shiver slightly.  The fact that she could be accused so easily made her take a look at those the rest of the crew had turned against even more vehemently with a touch of sympathy, though it wouldn’t keep her from voting in the end.

“I don’t know much about Cyrano, but the rest of ye seem set against him… I pray that yer right.”

Falanor

"Lookit us all...jumpin' round like jackrabbits," Falanor groused as he watched the crew and passengers passing blame this way and that.  "Blathering blatherskite, all of us...I be sorry for you, Cyrano.  Know not what you did to ruffle the feathers o' e'eryone but you done something.  Time for you to dance the hempen jig it is..."

Mithlomwen

"Oy."  Mith murmured to herself quietly as she tried to keep herself as busy as possible, not at all liking what was going on around her.  She had no earthly idea who might be responsible, but her fellow crew mates seemed focused on one in particular.  "Cyrano, I be sorely sorry, but seems me crew mates think the worst of ye."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Trieste

With the votes cast and tallied, it was decided that Cyrano Johnson would be brought to justice. Two of the more burly members of the crew grabbed the man and brought him to the edge of the ship, throwing him over the railing. After the sound of his screams died down, the crew conducted a search of Cyrano's berth, finding nothing to indicate he had been anything but a simple Crew Member.

As the ship sailed on, the crew retreated to their cabins, knowing no more about the traitors in their midst.

Saffron had wandered the ship the night prior as usual and it didn't seem like anyone had been out of their bed, but of course there was no telling what lurked on this ship. Her mechanics didn't give her the ability to see through the walls, unfortunately, or she'd have happily taken the chance to protect the humans from whatever evil lurked here.

It was good that everyone was alive today, but the mutineers were still out there. "Beguile's, your behaviour has been very strange indeed... Have you anything to say for your innocence?" There was something suspicious indeed about the way Beguile's had refused to vote, then thrown in with the majority. Saffron had no idea if it meant she was guilty, but she had little else to go on...

I wish I was a real girl... Saffron thought, wondering if perhaps a better brain would help her to see the subtleties that the others may pick up on.

Kazyth emerged from his bunk looking quite refreshed, absently tugging a tanktop on before running his fingers through his unruly chestnut hair.  Which, as is the nature of such things, only served to make his hair look even more sleep rumpled.  Bare feet padded across smooth wooden planks as he neared the others, chocolate eyes widening when accusations started flying again.  "What, we're back to this now?  Nobody died, why are we trying to throw someone overboard now?  Did someone lose the cards and dice?"  With a shake of his head and a sigh he looked around, then narrowed his gaze at Saffron.  "Why're you so interested in her, then, Saffron?  Trying to stir up trouble and throw us off the trail, maybe?"

The bourbon tasted a mite sweeter on Steps' tongue this mornin'. No deaths in the night; he figured that might have had more'n a little to do with it. But he had no illusions toward what the day would hold. There was still work to be done, and not all of it would be clean.

LeQuin made for the mess hall, though with the intent of foregoing whatever soggy abomination the cooks decided to pass off as morning's breakfast. The others filed in 'bout the same time, and Steps listened from the back as new accusations bounced about. The grizzled swabbie hung his head, a bit despairing as the makings of a new quarrel broke out between two of the others, the mule and the chess piece. Before either of them could get going, though, Star withdrew a small wrench and slammed it against the wall behind him, loud enough to draw eyes on him. Steps ceased tapping the wall and holstered the wrench, coolly meeting the eyes of his mates, and again settled his gaze on Beguile's Mistress. If the woman had any evidence to clear herself, now would be as good a time as any, and better than some.

Say what?
"It's true no one died last night, mates, but in case you've forgotten, we've still lost at least two crew to something on this ship, and murdered a third ourselves. Miss Ratchet there has a point. There's still a cancer on this ship, and we've no choice but to cut it out before it sends us all into the dark, one by one."

"Ahm Inclined t' agree on James, m'self" Ana siad, emerging from the kitchen with some food for all "While it's m'hope tha' he's safe, I got this feelin' that there's more t'him than what's said."

Kye

"There is something about James.  I can't seem to put me finger on it, but I can't shake the feeling that he's up to no good," Kyrsa said as she braided her fiery hair over one shoulder absently.

Kendra

She had wanted to protest, to stand up for the man they were quite willing to toss overboard but one voice in this ship wasn't worth much obviously. Who would go next because surely the count wasn't finished at two. Whatever misgivings she may have had with Beguiles Mistress she had a feeling now, just an inkling that her own thoughts were haphazard at best. She knew none here and could not vouch for a single one. She didn't know or trust the Cap'in and that just wasn't right either. Her one good eye searched the faces of those that had voted for Cyrano and wondered at each of them. Kendra wasn't blind, her one good eye afforded her still something and even she could see that something was afoot and mayhaps Falanor was one that they should be wary of.

Luna glances around at everyone pointing their fingers at each other... but she has a few suspicions of her own, as well. She would hate to be wrong and be responsible for an innocent getting tossed overboard, but... she just can't get past wondering what Saffron has been up to.

Mithlomwen

Glancing around and nodding her head, Mith agreed with a few of her crew mates.  "Seems to be somethin' fishy about that James character.  Can't rightly say what it is, but somethin's off."

Val raised an eyebrow doubtfully as the votes piled up quickly against James Moriarty, noting the names of those making the accusations.  "You might be right to accuse him," she said, thoughtfully, "but some of you seem to be awful quick to gang up on a person... and that didn't work out so well last time," she added, wryly.  Whether that was a sign of betrayal or just the same ignorance every innocent person suffered from, though, was another question, and one Val couldn't answer.  "Maybe Beguile's Mistress can help clear some of this up."

Luna bit her lip as she walked down the hallway... after rethinking things a little bit, she realized that she had been way too hasty about her conclusions. So without any real idea as to who might be killing off her fellows, she decided to have a look into what Kendra might be up to.

Beguile's Mistress

"Phfft!  You could accuse me because you don't like the fact that I try to know what I'm about before I vote or because you don't like the way I dress I suppose.  I was just as wrong as all the rest who voted for Cyrano even though I tried to be sure and not flighty.  The fall ain't gonna kill me ya know and I may land where my belongings are for a fact.  Got stolen from me they did before I could board and left me with just m' travel clothes."

BeMi swirled the rum in her tankard and took a drink as she watched the others and listened to accusations fly.

"The air be thick with distrust I see and not a little bit o' lyin'.  So why not cast m' vote now I says to myself and then I can wiffle-waffle with the best o' them."  Her speech may have been a little slurred and her stance not quite balanced due to an excess of spirits but the gimlet eye turned in Saffron's direction was hard and clear as she raised her cup in salute.

James Moriarty

James looked up, aghast.  "Y-y-you have something ag-g-g-gainst me, d-d-don't you, ThatGirlAnalise.  I am s-starting to think th-th-that y-y-y-y-you and y-your m-m-m-m-mutinous fr-fr-fr-friends d-d-don't app-p-preciate my h-h-hard work and d-d-desire f-f-for honest c-c-c-conversation!"  He peered at her through the wide, convex lenses of his glasses, his face still ashen from coping with his bout with a little illness, but getting brighter with color by the moment.  "M-mark my word, ThatGirlAnalise is th-the one y-y-y-y-you should w-w-w-worry about!"

Nobody really had a damn clear idea who anybody was except the mutineers and Niferbelle felt herself losing patience as they all seemed to flounder about qas they pointed their fingers. But it wasn't the time for inaction either and she wasn't about to draw any attention to herself but reading anybody the riot act. She paused in her work just long enough to glance over at Beguile's Mistress with a suspicious gaze.

"That's the one I'm worried about. Nothing personal."

Mr Bigglesworth

Mr. B. hadn't gotten any sleep at all - but he knew that he had to choose, an easy choice it was not, but he suspected James more than Beguiile's Mistress - thus his vote was cast - he could only hope he was right, then went back to swabbing the decks, keeping his head low.

Remiel

After long, careful deliberation, Remiel arrived at a decision.  "At this point, there's not a whole lot of evidence to go on," he said.  "Any one of us might be behind the disappearances of Lord Mayerling and Captain Madison.  Barring any new information, I'll have to vote with Saffron -- sorry, Beguile's Mistress."

Starlequin

...Something wasn't right. Or rather, something was more wrong than usual. A thought kept repeating in Star's head, round and round like a calliope rag. It felt off, somehow, not shaped proper, as if the thought weren't born within his own brain. Sure'n it didnt sound like his kinda thinkin'.

'Follow the gopher.'

But what in hell did it mean? Tarnation's wheel, they were aboard an airship! Weren't no rodents on the Ida Leigh. Leastways, weren't none furred or 4-legged.

'Maybe I oughta switch over to rum a while,' Steps thought as he loaded a pallet jack with flour 20-pounders and drove it updecks to the pantry. Easy work, but it gave him too much thinkin' time. Wasn't healthy for a man. Better his muscles ached than his brain.

Steps parked the jack near the pantry door; now it was delivered, the kitchen auto could restock it itself. He turned to leave,  but caught the cupboard door swingin' free and sighed.

'Damn clockwork can't even keep the grub stowed. Be better off with a coat rack on wheels,' he groused, returning to secure the door. A quick look inside to make sure nothing was missing set LeQuin's blood runnin' cold.

There against the back wall, sitting under the chill lights, was a stack of crates. Meats, assorted and freeze-dried by the label. But the brand was what held LeQuin stupefied.

Go4Glory MeatsNSweets

Steps twitched at the sight of the cartoon gopher givin' its goofy little thumb's-up, and he slammed the door hard enough to rattle its hinges. Part of him wanted to look again; it was a hall...a hallucy...it was a damn mirage, 's what it was. And even if it wasnt, so what? A cartoon rat didn't mean a hill of shit, even on a boat off-keel as the Ida. Star headed back to his bunk; duties be damned, it was time for another touch'a the crayture.

He sat nearly an hour, bottle of man's grace in hand, warming him from within at every sip. New thought now, same as the old thought.

'The gopher knows.'

Well, good for the little bastard. Helped Steps get a handle on matters about as much as a fart in a wine bottle. But maybe...

'In the kitchen...answers in the kitchen?'

Could that be it? Was there something...or someone...in the kitchen that could end this mystery? Or at least give the crew a fightin' chance?

One way to find out. Steps stowed his liquor and headed amidships. Didnt know what he'd do there,  didnt care. Figured on trailin' whoever popped up. And after another hour of slippin' doors and listenin' in where he weren't known, LeQuin was beginning to question his  suspicions of Beguile's Mistress.

Aye. Now, it were fast becomin' That Girl Analise that Star trusted less and less.
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got.

That Girl Analise

Though Ana knew she was nowhere near being voted off, she was a little concerned at her being voted for at all. She shook her head at accusations. Though they were mistaken she would not get angry: they had a purpose here and she was sure there was some truth to the vote she had already placed. It seemed she wouldn't have much time left unless something changed. What they needed was a clue and they needed it now. "Yer wastin' yer votes," she mumbled to herself, but knew she had nothing with which to help prove her innocence, unless one of her allies stood up for her.

Sarena

There were too many questions and not enough answers. One thing was for certain, Sarena was highly suspicous of That Girl Analise.

With a hefty sigh, Ana stood up. "I's true tha' I've been doin' some--" she coughed "Oh, blast this obviously fake accent. I should have you know that I am a detective aboard this ship. Yes I have been sneaking about, but it has been for good. I will not reveal my partner and I ask that person not reveal themself for their safety, but I have brought a chemist to help me. You'll be for the worse taking me out. I've yet to discover anyone truly innocent, else I would have some help at this point in time. My chemist knows my suspicions. So throw me overboard if you don't believe me! But a search of my room will give you all the proof you need. Should I be spared today, I would hope that I get protection this night," she sighed, resigned. She wasn't much longer for this ship no matter who it was that took her out.

Guy gave Analise a quizzical look. Was she being honest with him this time? Her story did explain why she was stalking about the ship the way she was. "I... Apologize for suspecting you, Analise..." he finally said. "But, if you're innocent, that just leaves my suspicions of BeMi unchecked..."

Trieste

With all the suspicions flying around, nobody really noticed that The Last Standing, still exhausted from his third shift rotation the night before, was snoozing too deeply to contribute to voting. No matter, as the crewers had sealed the fate of Beguile's Mistress. The burliest among the crew seized her by her arms, causing her to drop her beloved rum flask! They brought her to the side of the ship and tossed her over, though some squirmed uncomfortably at her fading screams. Once she could no longer be heard, a search of her berth revealed none other than her beloved Jolly Roger PJs, revealing her to be a Pirate. They really were very nice PJs.

That finished, the crewers retreated to their own berths for the night, wondering if they had indeed ridden themselves of the menace amongst them.

Nighttime roles please PM if you plan to use your abilities.

Having gotten a good night's sleep, one hopes, from ridding themselves of a clear Pirate, the crew members wake up the next day to find that That Girl Analise is nowhere to be found. A search of her berth turns up a magnifying glass, a fingerprinting kit, and a detective's badge, so it does seem indeed that she was the law enforcement officer she claimed to be.

Kendra

Kendra sat atop a barrel on the lower open deck lashing a knot, the morning wind whipping against her face. The sails were up and the cogs in the machine were oiled and primed, the furnace was stoked and the Ida Leigh was creaking along through the sky. Pulling her goggles down to protect her eyes she found herself weary of everyone's moves. How long before the ship would dock again? It was still strange to fathom that Beguile's Mistress had been a pirate of all things, Kendra had every intention of getting her hands on those pyjama's, it got pretty drafty at night and if she were goin to get debunked like it seemed Analise had been, then she'd rather die in someone else's pyjamas than her own.

That Analise had been a dectective on the ship was curious indeed, why had she been on board. Had she suspected something or someone before they had even set sail? Had Madison hired her? Kendra thought over who she had been trying to vote for all along and James Moriarty's name finally came to her. Was he responsible?

Valerian

Val huddled unhappily up in the rigging.  Normally she loved sitting up here, getting a view of the clouds and the ship, but today it gave her no comfort at all.  "Poor Analise.  But she did help us, at least.  She never wavered in her suspicions of James Moriarty... and now we know that she would have been able to prove her suspicions.  No, he must be guilty."  She spoke almost wonderingly, for he had always seemed much too nervous and timid to be up to anything sneaky -- or perhaps being a mutineer had simply used up all his courage, she thought, grimly.
"To live honorably, to harm no one, to give to each his due."

Mr Bigglesworth

"Yes, for sure Analise knew she was soon for the plank, and certainly James Moriarty was spooked that she was getting too close.  He always seems to be lurking in the shadows anyway - we will all be safer to earn our honest pay when he is gone."

Remiel

"Analise was sure about James Moriarty," said Remiel, adjusting his goggles and brandishing his squarehead spanner.  "We must ensure that her sacrifice was not in vain."

Mithlomwen

"Aye, me thinks James Moriarty is the guilty one."  Mith agreed, nodding her head decisively.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

James Moriarty

Amidst the well-thought accusations, James' face changes, going from innocent and timid and forming into a broad, ugly sneer.  With surprisingly calm manner, straightened up to full height for the first time on the journey, he casually flings his glasses to the ground and grinds the thick lenses under the heel of his boot.

"You are so quick to point fingers, and yet you have managed to find but two of us, and one by blind luck.  And without your detective, and with your Chirurgeon's power used up, where does that leave you?!  Hmm?!"  His voice was an octave lower than before, and the venom dripped from his words.  "Dear ThatGirlAnalise knew it was me from the start -- but that's all she knew!  When you've cast me, cackling, overboard, you'll have nowhere else to turn.  We're among you -- in your quiet conversations, whispering in your ears.  Turning you against your very selves!  You may have won this battle, but when we have you hoisted by your collective petards, you'll be wishin' you went quietly and let us have this ship from the start."

He stepped forward into the group, daring anyone to lay a hand on him before their judgment were pronounced.  "And I'll even give you a present, to at least give you the slightest chance to get out of this in one piece."  He pointed a steady finger at Kendra.  "She's played a good game, and in our alliance she threw off many a wary eye.  But I'll be all too happy to have her company with me in Davy Jones' locker!"  At this pronouncement, he laughed uproariously and ran for the side of the ship.

The alcohol's peace was lacking now. Analise, the Detective. Lost in the night. And Star LeQuin knew his hands were as dirty as them that done the deed. Him and his godsdamned delusions. Should'a had the sense to keep his head down, instead'a playin' copper. Ought've been tending the Ida, not chasin' phantoms. Dammit, he'd known BeMi was rotten, and he let his imagination run off on him. And he got a good woman killed.

Wouldn't happen again. Enough blood on his hands already for his stupidity. Steps hefted the tool sack over his shoulder and held a grim cadence to the Aft Engine Room, his head hung low. Gears needed cleanin'. Sparkers needed re-lightin'. Bars needed sandin'. He passed other crewmates in silence, shame holding his eyes hard on the deck. Still a lotta chatter goin round, but he'd not be joinin' its course again. Sounded like they were after that Moriarty this time. Guess he were a proper villain, after all.

"In the kitchen, tending to the pastries.  Where were you, Saffron?"  He said, lifting an eyebrow.

Galactic Druid

"I can safely say that Ryven is one of the few trustworthy people on this ship, Saffron." Guy said, taking a step out of the kitchen, leaving a pot full of beef bones and vegetable scraps to boil. The setup of the entire kitchen was a marvel, even for it's age, it was a shame it hadn't seen more proper use until the current crew came along. He got a small laugh every time he heard the automaton that had been running it banging on the store room door.

The kitchen had been carefully built over the main boiler for the entire airship. Excess heat powered the stove directly, while smoke and anything undesired was pumped into the same vent that the grill emptied into, giving the ship a complete kitchen, without having any extra boilers or exhausts.

"I hope you'd be willing to change your decision." he explained to Safron. "From what I've heard, I'd say Kendra is the real threat to our safety."

The Last Standing

Last stumbled into the mess hall, recovering from a bout of exhaustion and typhus that had left him bed-bound for the past few days. Much to his astonishment, the killings and trials by gravity continued unabated. He asked about the many that were missing. Some were innocents, trying to make an honest living aboard the ship, but the taint was far deeper than originally thought. With two mutineers disposed of and the disappearances still going strong, Last wondered where the end could be. The young man gazed upon the group, eyes sagging from sleepless nights, trying so hard to not be caught susceptible by the mutineers.

When he heard his suspicions concerning James were ultimately validated, Last felt empowered. He may have been out of the loop for days, but perhaps he had been blessed with a capacity for judging the human spirit. Well, at the very least he could blame irrationally like the rest of them.

And yet, there was a strange aura coming from SunshineSparkle. He nudged Sarena, whispering his concerns, and returned to his post in fear of infecting the rest of the crew.

Mithlomwen

"If you'd open your ears instead of your mouth, you'd know that I was where I always was...in the kitchen.  If you're accusing me just because I didn't vote for James, you'll be sorely disappointed.  Not all of us are willing to stand up for our convictions it seems, but when one person does a witch hunt occurs and only heart ache follows," he said before turning back to the kitchen.  "If you'll excuse me, I have my own business to attend to," he stalked off.

Ryven

"By the way...I change my vote to SunshineSparkle" he said from the kitchen.

Teo Torriatte

Luna bit her lip and made a sour face at Sunshine... she wasn't sure what the other woman might have had against her. "If you must know, I was in my cabin writing in my journal. This voyage has turned into a right nightmare, and I needed to blow off some steam. I could ask what you were up to, but I'm not really the vindictive type. I am actually a bit more curious as to what Kendra was up to the night before."

Kendra

Kendra sighed, as soon as James had given that startling revelation she knew her own days on this ship were numbered. There was no point in pleading innocence, they would of course cite that a guilty person was bound to say that and if she laughed and said, of course I'm the guilty party then they'd toss her over at any rate. Either way she was now a suspect, no she was worse than that. She was a dead girl, living now on borrowed time. The cap'in again had called her out and others would follow suit she was sure. It was laughable really but what else could she do.

She would be expected to point a finger somewhere too and well fed up with the state things had turned, she looked to ThatRPGuy.
"Well you is vouchin' for Ryven but he ain't vouchin' much for you is he?"

Ryven

"ThatRPGuy is innocent.  Consider this my vouch for him," Ryven said as he peeked from inside the kitchen.  "Now who's vouching for you?" He lifted an eyebrow.

Mr Bigglesworth

Looking down from the crows nest, Mr. B. called out" I too can vouch for ThatRPGuy - it is Sunshine that always seems to be lurking suspiciously about."

Remiel

"I'm not sure what Ryven was playing at, voting for Falanor when everyone else voted for James Moriarty," said Remiel, thoughtfully.  "Clearly James wanted to sacrifice himself, but the question is--why?  To draw attention away from his cohorts?"  He mused on that, chewing on his lip. "Well, the fact remains that SunshineSparkle voted the way James did, when they both voted for Analise.  Clearly, she was in league with him."

Mithlomwen

After giving it a bit of thought, Mith changed her vote.  It did seem that SunshineSparkle might be hiding something.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Valerian

Val sighed, shaking her head now and then as she listened to the votes.  "Ryven, I haven't made up my mind about you yet, but one thing's for sure -- if you're not a mutineer, then you need a vacation."  Everyone was uncertain right now, and no wonder, but Ryven was acting especially oddly, and not making much sense.

Like Remiel, she thought out loud for a moment, trying to sort through her thoughts.  "Kendra was quick to vote against both Beguile's and Moriarty.  And then Sunshine was the first to vote against Analise... an honest mistake, she says, which might be true.  Heaven knows we've little we can be sure of these days.  But very suspicious, just the same.  No, she might be guilty."

Then she spoke up more loudly, having made up her mind.  "But what about Kazyth?  I'm only a crew member, all I can do is look at the votes, but I don't think I trust him.  A lot of you are vouching for ThatRPGuy, even though he voted to lynch Analise at first.  He was fooled by the rumors, he said, and I've got no reason to doubt that.  But I'd like to know who fooled him, and I think it might be Kazyth.  He was pretty quick to defend Beguile's.  Maybe he was telling tales about poor Analise, too."

Niferbelle

"No, I don't think it's Sunshine Sparkle," Niferbelle said with a slight shake of her head as she glanced about at those who had made that particular accusation. There was no accusation in eyes she was simply going with her own gut. "I think maybe it's Kendra."

Autumn Sativus

"I'm pretty sure both Sunshine and Kendra have had a hand in this." Saffron mumbled. "But either way, it's one less to worry about."

Sarena

At this rate, by the time we get where we're going, we won't have any crew left.  Sarena eyed the crew with a weary heart.  Maybe the rumors of the curse were true.  Maybe her first and last act as Captain should have been to turn the ship around and go back.  She shook her head, "I'm sorry, Kendra, but you're lookin' more and more guilty every day."

Kazyth

"More deaths, more blame, and closer still we get to not having enough folks to actually make this voyage," he grumbled softly to himself as he dangled above in the rigging, working on patching a small tear in one of the starboard stabilizing fins.  "It's bad enough that I have to be up here doing still more work because people keep vanishing or being thrown overboard, but I have to be accused of having a hand in it, too?"

A soft sigh and a shake of his head were all that he offered for the moment, as he clutched a larged curved needle and thread, closing the rent in the material as best he could.  "Well, it'll hold for now at least.  And there seems to be a whole lot of folks who think that Kendra is a bit of evil, though she seems a harmless enough thing to me.  Still, what do I know?  The mob has spoken."
A rose by any other name... still has thorns you can prick someone with. - Me.

Falanor

Falanor listened to the crew and passengers jaw at each other about who they thought was guilty and not.  The arguments some threw up in defense of others seemed flimsy enough that a strong breath would tear them to shreds.  "If you askin' me the likeliest culprit would be SunshineSparkle needs go answer for her vote..."

Starlequin

The roar of engines drowned Star's thoughts out, replaced them with an uncaring sort of oily litany and left him able to sink into the work's rhythm. Turn the wrench. Loosen the wrench. Tighten the wrench. Turn the wrench. The Ida's vibin' shook bolts loose from the damndest of tight spots, and somebody with less meat on their fists oughtve been down there replacing them. But no one else seemed to give a shit, busy with hunting murderers and all. Not a task what didnt need doin, but certain not the only one aboard. So they could leave this to him; at least down in the hold he wouldnt feel so much blood on his hands this time when they decided to keel-haul Kendra, or SunshineSparkle.

Managing to look up from the barrel she lay mostly slumped next to, Moirae gazed over Kendra, then Sunshine.  "My suspicions lay with Sunshine, as well."

Kendra

Her mouth could not have fallen open any more than it did at being accused by so many, but she maybe should have spoken up for Sunshine when the votes were going against her too. Now another had gone missing and she knew full well that the finger would be all too swiftly pointed in her direction. Pressing the bridge of her nose tight she glanced at the crew present.

"I know wha' you're all gonna say befor'n ya say anythin' a' all but let me ask ya this. Where are all these missin' crew goin' and why is our food suddenly gettin' better tastin'? It's not like the cooks have gotten any better. I still think ThatRpGuy has something to hide, in fact I think all the cooks do but that's just me."

Valerian

Of course someone in the sort of fix Kendra was in would say anything, absolutely anything, to try and divert suspicion.  Even so, Val turned a little pale at the accusation, trying not to think too much about the little bit of breakfast that she'd been able to eat that morning.  Not that she thought anyone would actually do such a thing, even the worst, most ruthless sort of mutineer, but even so...

Taking a deep breath to steady herself, she looked at Kendra, a little sadly.  "It wasn't all her fault," she said, quietly.  "She voted against Beguile's at the start, and I think that's what gave that rotten pirate the idea to turn Kendra against us.  But she told too many tales and gave herself away.  That's what always happens to mutineers," she added, giving Kazyth a wary glance.  Kendra had to have allies left, after all.

"Perhaps," Moirae began, sipping from her flask.  She hadn't appeared to have moved from the previous spot next to the barrel, slumped.  "Kendra's been suspicious, but ThatRPGuy was consorting with James."  Stated, she propped her head against the ship and closed her eyes.

Mithlomwen

"Me thinks Kendra has something to do with this."  Mith nodded, agreeing with those that had already voted for her.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Ryven

"You're exactly right, Kendra, I do have something I hid.  I hid the fact that I saved Mr. B from your treacherous deeds once, but I could not save him a second time.  I will regret that for the rest of my life, but I take solace in the fact that throwing you overboard just might make things better, you traitorous scum!" Ryven said.

Teo Torriatte

Luna shook her head, she has had her own suspicions about Kendra, and since other people are taking a look at her now, as well, she figures that the other woman is worth another look. She didn't like this whole throwing overboard business, and it was getting frustrating that it mostly seemed to be innocents they were tossing over, but sooner or later they would have to find more evidence of wrong doing... at least one would hope so...

She shook her head derisively, this certainly isn't how her father would have handled things.

Starlequin

Steps hunched in his bunk, ratcheting gears squeaking under the spanner's grip. Let it go too long, like a damn fool; leg was about to wind itself loose and fall apart like a ruddy cheap watch. Hell with the duties. Wouldn't be any use to the Ida 'r anyone on 'er if'n he fell apart haulin' tack below decks.

Not that he were any use to 'em now. Couldn't even count the number of innocent crewmates they'd floated overboard by now; felt like a blightin' pirate could take lessons from them on how to thin a pack. Aye, and there were a thought. Maybe the Ida were naught but a trainin' route, aimed to teach would-be scoundrels the finer points of chaos and mayhem. Almost mad enough to land a smile on Le Quin's grim mug.

Chatter sounded through the hallways. Another one vanished. Another one about to join the gulls. Star still had no interest in sharing his thoughts with the others. They didnt need him, anyway; they were already no doubt set on feeding Kendra to the waves, and him jawin' up about things wouldn't help anyone either way. Just wind the leg.

Kendra

Kendra became more exasperated by the second, her life was on the line here and it sure felt as if they were drawing lots on her innocence.
"That's it? Sure I may as well toss me self over. Are you all gone insane here? How many have you all sent to their deaths already ... rethink your decisions I beg ya all. More innocent blood will be shed or ... thrown over. Look to the kitchens will ye!?!"

She couldn't very well run for it, there was no where for her to go and it sure was looking like this would be the last journey she'd ever take. Sending up a silent prayer to the first Cap'in of the ship to come to her rescue was about the only chance left to her and she had never held much store in prayer.

Remiel

Remiel wasn't so sure.  For some reason, he had a suspicion that Kendra was innocent of the foul deeds which had transpired.  He couldn't put his finger on it, but she simply didn't seem like the type to stab her fellow sailors in the back.

Still, he'd been so sure about SunshineSparkle, and he'd turned out to be wrong.  He had to accept the fact that perhaps, just perhaps, he really didn't know what was going on.   Well, hopefully, someone did.

"Kendra, I'm sorry," he said.  "You seem like a fine lass to me.  But everyone else seems to be sure about you, so I suppose I'll have to side with the majority."

Sarena

Their numbers were getting too few and the poor souls lost so far on this journey weighed heavily on more heavily on her shoulders with each passing day.  Sarena looked at Kendra, shaking her head sadly.  There had to be a better way....

Galactic Druid

It was as Kendra said, Guy did have something to hide. All that wine and rum he kept taking for 'the kitchen' never actually made it into any of the food. That was, however, the worst of his crimes. "I shouldn't be too surprised you'd point your finger at me, Kendra, now that I'm on to you." he said with conviction.
A/As last updated 11/27 - Halfway past busy season!

Niferbelle

If things went on this way for much longer NIferbelle thought she just might take a walk off the side of the ship herself before suspicion turned on her. After all, it didn't matter if you were guilty or not once the masses ganged up on your tail. Maybe that was what was happening to Kendra right now but Niferbelle didn't have a reason to change her vote. If Kendra were another innocent then Niferbelle would have to deal with the consequences later.

Kazyth

"Seems it doesn't matter where my vote goes this time, the weight of the crowd and crew is against you, Kendra.  I'll say a prayer for you.  I make no promises about what happens to your underthings when you're gone, though."
A rose by any other name... still has thorns you can prick someone with. - Me.

Falanor

Falanor grumbled, "I see no way out for you, lass.  Kendra, I hope your passing be swift..."

Trieste

And so it happens that Kendra is thrown overboard by the crew - though a search of her berth turns up nothing that a crew member shouldn't have.

In the night afterward, there are all sorts of goings-on. When the crew wakes the next morning, they find that Saffron is missing. In her berth is a toolkit and various cogs, wheels, and gears. They are clearly the possessions of a Simulacrum. In the next berth, Falanor is missing but under his pillow are several regents and beakers identifying him as the Chemist.

The chances of the crew are dwindling, and all of them are sure to know that they must choose wisely.

Ryven

"I believe it is you, Moirae, that must account for yourself," he said.

Kazyth

"You know," Kazyth murmured as he looked up from his current task of polishing the brass railing.  "Moirae there does seem to be doing an awful lot of drinking, doesn't she?  That's the sort of thing that one normally doesn't see unless there's a guilty conscience at work."
A rose by any other name... still has thorns you can prick someone with. - Me.

Valerian

Val was shocked and horrified at this double loss.  Not only was the Chemist gone, the trusted ally that Analise had spoken of, but Saffron was gone as well, the only real ally that Val had had, and now she felt more alone than she ever had in her life.  What if they were all doomed and the mutineers won?  She gave Kazyth a dark glance, but otherwise pointedly ignored him as she turned to look at ThatRPGuy.  "I think you're a Mutineer, and the sooner you're off this ship, the better."

Whatever else she might have said was lost when her voice quavered and she retreated away from the group to hide this momentary weakness, though she still watched warily as the votes unfolded.

Remiel

Remiel was starting to panic.  Not only were good, honest crew members dropping like flies, but Saffron--the Simulacrum, in whom he had confided--was nowhere to be found.

"Why are you so eager to get rid of Moirae, Ryven?" he demanded.  "Saffron was suspicious of you--and I am too.  I'm not sure about ThatRPGuy, but I'm pretty sure about you."

Ryven

"Simple.  Her voting pattern," he said toward Remiel.  "And Saffron can be suspicious of anyone she likes, but until she can prove she has precognitive powers, I really don't see how her opinion is relevant.  Go ahead.  Throw me off the side.  You'll regret it as soon as you do.  I already told you I saved Mr. B the second night.  What more assurance do you need?"  Ryven said while putting some muffins into the oven.

Valerian

"Saffron can't prove anything anymore.  She's g-gone," Val put in, bitterly.  "And if Kazyth wants Moirae gone, then that's pretty good proof she's innocent as far as I'm concerned."  Again she briefly glared at Kazyth, then sighed miserably.  On top of everything else, now they were all arguing, unable to agree on the culprits even though she felt it should all have been obvious by now.

"My only crimes are stealing this here flask and voting with the majority once or twice too many.  There is no blood on these hands.  My only regret is not paying enough attention to these matters and thinking they'd sort themselves out.  And, well, not stealing a bigger flask.  Obviously going to need it," muttered, eyes narrowing; a second later she hiccuped, sipped from the flask.  "James tried making me believe he was innocent and sadly I thought he was at first.  During that, he confided to consorting with ThatRPGuy, who has been suspicious enough.  And maybe you, Kazyth or Ryven, are the third.  If enough of you are swayed to have me killed, this ship will be losing another faithful, albeit drunk, crew member -- not a savage mutineer."

Niferbelle

Niferbelle was briefly distracted from the discussion as she was nearly certain she'd spied someone up in the rigging trying to look down her shirt but whoever the perverted sod was got lucky and got out of sight before he or she could be made. Niferbelle glowered at the remaining crew, knowing full well some of them had no good on their minds, and tapped her toe. She'd been hearing things...she sighed.

"Maybe the devil will add another innocent soul to our tally but when I look at ThatRPGuy I feel like a ghost is walking over my grave."

Mithlomwen

Mith tossed her vote in for ThatRPGuy, unable to shake the feeling he was hiding something.
Baby, it's all I know,

Sarena

Oh people were hiding things alright, but Sarena was more convinced that Moirae was doing a bit more than drinking.  She didn't trust a body that never drank, but she sure as hell didn't trust one that drank too much either.

Starlequin

It'd been a long time since LeQuin had been honked off enough at a crewmate to want to deck 'em. But Kazyth's crack at Moirae's drinkin' come awful close to inspirin' some involuntary behavior correctin'. He dropped the toolbox and brandished a ratchet at the loudmouth, pointing back at Moirae, then gestured toward himself as if to say 'Just cuz a body suffers a bit 'a rough tongue now and then, t'aint reason 'nough to go about callin' for blood. Reckon I drink more'n any three crew aboard; on a boat like this, everyone dropping like flies, I'd say anyone what can stay sober is more dangerous than a couple alkies. So watch where ya point them fingers, greenhorn.'

...It was a very expressive gesture.

Teo Torriatte

Luna's head was spinning with all the accusations flying around, but she was still curious as to what Moirae has been up to for the last few nights.

Ryven

"I'm changing my vote to ThatRPGuy.  I'm afraid he has manipulated me for the last time," he said, throwing the man a very tense look.

Starlequin

Some fair points bein' made. Star reckoned he might need to change his vote as well. The cooks were turning on each other, and he didnt like the idea of two angry men sloppin' his grub. No tellin what bit 'a nasty might find its way into the pot. Better to get rid of ThatRPGuy, maybe...
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got.

Remiel

"If Ryven's who he says he is, then there's no way he could have done the foul deed," said Remiel, reluctantly.  "Count my vote for ThatRPGuy, as well."

Galactic Druid

Guy backed away from the crowd slowly. "You all must be joking..." he said nervously "You can't really suspect me, not when Moirae has been do obvious this entire time!"

And so the rest of the crew seized ThatRPGuy by the arms and took him over the side. A search of his berth afterwards turned up a round robin and a suspiciously large hat that marked him as a Mutineer.

Agreeing with Ryven, Mith tossed in her vote for Kazyth as well.
Baby, it's all I know,

Kazyth

"Me?  Me!?  What the heck did I ever do to any of you?  I've done my best to just do my job and keep this ship running, a task that's been made ever more difficult as people keep throwing other people overboard.  And if that's suspicious, what about Sarena?  For being the new Captain, she hasn't done much of anything to protect anyone, has she?"

Remiel

"It seems to me that ThatRPGuy and Sarena always voted in tandem," said Remiel.  "If you ask me, she's more dangerous than Kaz."

Teo Torriatte

Shit was getting real, really quickly... Luna knew they had to be closing in on the mutineers, but she was determined to make her father proud and not go down without a fight. She eyes each of them suspiciously, but she is the most curious about Ryven.

Sarena

Sarena glared at Kazeth, shaking her head.  "How quickly they turn against you when the stinky brown stuff hits the rotating oscillatory device!"

She looked pointedly at Ryven and Mith, certain neither would come to her aid against these accusations.  Muttering under her breath as she walked away, "I knew I should have turned this contraption around the second trouble started happening."

Niferbelle

With the loss of Valerian Niferbelle knew it was nothing more than a crapshoot now and the odds didn't seem to be in her favor. It was irritating, more than anything, that she had signed up with such a messed up outfit that seemed likely to get her killed.

"I say we need to keep an eye on Kazyth," she said flatly though he was not the only one she held suspicions about.

Starlequin

Steps had seen enough on this damned ship, he wasnt surprised by anything anymore. He once again pointed out his suspicions against Kazyth, hopefully for the last time.
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got.

Deeply she frowned, graciously sipping from her flask -- very graciously as she was almost cast overboard to an unfortunate demise -- and shook her head at some of the crew.  "I no longer think Kazyth is guilty -- at least... at least, not of what we're looking for.  Dangerous sort, shure, but murderous?  A mutineer?  That belongs to Sarena.  She, James, and That ..." A hand half waved, half gestured toward the ship's rail, "One that we just thossed over.  She's part of them.  Whalk the plank, m-m-missy."  All right, so it came out a little slurred, but the vote was clear enough.

Kazyth - 4
Sarena - 4
Ryven - 1

Last call for votes.

Kazyth

Kazyth grumbles to himself for a little while, watching everyone else and knowing that Sarena was the captain, so a tie between her and him meant certain death.  Might as well make the last vote count if he's going down in flames.  "You know what?  I actually find it suspicious how quick Ryven was to point a finger at me, even though his actions have been far more sinsister seeming than my own.  If I die, take a good long hard look at him regardless."
A rose by any other name... still has thorns you can prick someone with. - Me.

Sarena

Sarena's eyes moved from one face to another of the remaining crew.  Half of them were convinces she was a mutineer, and there was nothing she could do to change their minds.  Problem was, she wasn't convinced that her own accusations were thrown in the right direction.  She looked at Kazyth and sighed.  There was absolutely nothing about him that made him suspicious to her.  He'd always worked so hard to keep things in working order and she couldn't blame him for suspecting her when half the others did too, could she?

Her eyes fell on Ryven and Sarena nodded, "Yer awfully buddy buddy in that kitchen with ThatRPGuy, friend."

Remiel

"Y'know what?" said Remiel, switching suddenly to a Colonialist drawl.  "I reckon that maybe it weren't Sarena that done it, after alls.  I reckon that maybe it were Ryven.   Whattdya think, Captain?"

Sarena

A slow smile spread across her lips, "I say, I think we've found our man.  May he be the last of the scoundrels, lest the rest of us be findin' ourselves falling to the same fate."

Starlequin

LeQuin looked up from his tool kit at the sudden swing, his blood runnin' colder'n the north winds. So that's how it was, eh? Well, then. If'n that's how they wanted to play it, he could gamble with'em. He raised his wrench and aimed at their so-called trusty Capt'n, a grim smile on his lips. 'Oughta known I was wrong to throw in with Sarena. But this time she won't get away with it.'
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got.

Niferbelle

"I still don't feel quite right about Kazyth," Niferbelle began, uncharacteristically second-guessing herself. "But I'm beginning to think Sarena is our problem now."

Ryven

"Well then...it appears Valerian's suspicions were right about you then, Remiel.  I know where your allegiances lie now, and I know who the guilty parties are now.  Thank you for clearing that up," he said with a slowly spreading grin across his face.

Mithlomwen

Mith listened to the rest of  her crew mates, watching the back and forth between them all.  It was when Niferbelle voiced her suspicion of Sarena, that Mith felt unease creep into her bones.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
