All Hail the King

This group has been a pet idea in the back of my head for some time.

This group is inspired to a degree by Game of Thrones, but largely inspired by a show that ran on NBC called Kings.  It lasted only one season, and it's certainly not required material, but the bulk of it, it's atmosphere, scenery, and the like, is the major inspiration.

It will be set in an alternative universe, in a sense, and based around the royal family, the servants, government workers, and guards as they live and work in The Tower, the one and only government building located in the heart of the capitol.  A person may choose to write any from those groups, but if a person would like to write a commoner, there must be good reason for them to be there, in the capitol building.

Anyone is welcome to join.  This is LGBTQ friendly.

Storyline
For centuries, the Jordan family has ruled over the Kingdom of Gilea.  Good and bad, kind and cruel, kings and queens have worn the Gilded Crown and claimed dominion over the vast kingdom and it's territories.  Threats have arisen over the course of history, but sill the Jordans and the Gilded Crown have survived and thrived.  But as time has gone on, and the once stable neighboring kingdoms have fallen, toppled by revolutions of the people seeking change, the Jordans face a growing threat, one that can not be so easily ignored.

Essentially, this is a story between Royalists, those who support the crown and the Jordans, and the Revolutionists, who support a change in government, whether it's a military coup, or democratic revolution.  This is intended to be largely a sandbox story, with guided events along the way that will impact nearly everyone.  You alone are responsible for your own character's story, development, and interactions.

You can expect parties/balls, government meetings, secret meetings, terrorist/revolutionist events, etc.

Character Limitations:
For the sake of the majority comfort, it is asked that all characters be, at the very least, eighteen years of age or older.

Any and all sexualities and identities are open.  Again, as mentioned previously, this is an LGBTQ friendly story.

Royal family, servants of a variety of positions, government officials and employees, military, and King's Swords guard are open to all.  It is expected that the royal family would have deep connections to one another, and can be branched out from there, as this is mainly focused upon and taking place in the Tower.

Game Rules

  • Real life ALWAYS comes first!  This is just writing, and having fun.  If you need to step away, feel free to step away.  We'll always be around, and there is no rush.  But if you're going to be away, please let it be known either to the GM or in the OOC.
  • Be respectful of your fellow writers!  No Godmodding!  Always check to see if the other person is alright with something when it comes to kinks, whether through PMs, Character Sheets, or their On's and Off's thread.
  • Characters MUST be eighteen years of age or older.  This is for the comfort of everyone involved.
  • List the content of your post in the warning section of the header if it's something sexual or violent. While this game is pretty relaxed about story elements, as long as they fit within the site rules, some individuals may not be alright with reading over certain elements and kinks.  It's totally fine to make fun of the warning section and put jokes in there.  I do it all the time myself, but please list extreme elements or sexual elements.
  • Character Death MUST be decided beforehand!  Even if a writer is open to having their character killed, please be respectful and discuss it with them beforehand.
  • Don't force sex scenes on writers.  Again, please be respectful of your fellow writers.  While this is a group with a focus in many places on non-con situations, please check with your fellow writer before introducing a sexual scene instead of just jumping in without asking.  It's rude and inconsiderate.  Not everyone is looking for smut at any given moment.
  • Don't be afraid to speak up.  If something is bothering you, you're feeling left out, or you want to get out, don't hesitate to let the GM(s) know.  I for one would be more than happy to help out with anything, and am understanding when it comes to needing to leave.  I'll do whatever I can to help out.
  • Let the GM(s) know, or post in the OOC, if you are going to be away for an extended amount of time.  This is mainly for the sake of everyone involved.  If you're having muse issues, need to take a bit of a break, unable to post, or just want to leave, please at least let it be known in the OOC.  The muse comes and goes.  I know that all too well.
  • Leave the drama at the door.  Leave the drama at the door.  If you can't get along with an individual, then don't interact with them.  I am not choosing individuals as to who stays and who goes.  I'm not getting into the middle of others' drama.  If you can't handle being in the same game as another individual, don't bother.
  • Keep it civil.  There's no need for arguing.  I'm a firm believer in the saying that, if you have nothing good to say, it's better to not say anything.

Other Important Information
I, GnothiSeauton, will be GM.  I am open to taking on Co-GMs at this time.

This game will be placed in Extreme to allow maximum creative expression.  Each post will be tagged with a warning for people who do not wish to read extreme subject matter.

Three characters per writer.  Members of the Royal Family or Illegitimate Children of King Richard must be discussed prior to a sheet being created.  They are not on a first-come-first-serve basis for reasons that will be described in the Character Creation section.

World Information

Background
The world in which this story is based is set in a modern world not unlike ours on the surface.  It is a modern society, with a culture that closely resembles the modern, industrialized world.  For the sake of simplicity, the momentary system of the kingdom will resemble the dollar, with portraits of dead Kings and Queens featured instead of U.S. Presidents.

History
The Kingdom of Gilea was founded close to one thousand years ago.  It was in the aftermath of the fall of the Tomalain Empire, the once dominant force in all the lands, that the Kingdom rose from the ashes, along with several other nations and kingdoms.  Once unified subjects to the Emperor of Tomalain, the Kingdom of Gilea, and it's neighbors soon found themselves fighting one another for survival, resulting in a series of conflicts that would last for hundreds of years.

Since the beginning of the Kingdom, the Jordan Family has clawed it's way to dominance in the kingdom by conquest.  Lesser and weaker families fell to the rule and strength of the Jordan family.  The numbers of the Jordan family, and their supporters, grew and grew over time, laying claim to the right to rule over the Kingdom of Gilea.

For centuries ever since, the Kingdom has stood.  There have been rocky moments in it's long and illustrious history.  More than once, a family of the kingdom has had the notion of seceding from the Kingdom, or attempting to lay claim to the crown, but each and every time, the Jordan Family and Gilea have remained victorious.

As time has gone on, so too have the people of Gilea, evolving with the times from a kingdom of farmers and hunters into a country rich with industry.

Capitol City
Capitol City closely resembles New York City in today's world.  It is a densely populated urban metropolis, with close to nine million people, located upon a man-made island.

It's humble beginnings were once a farming community indentured to the old Jordan family.  The island was created in the form of a man-made moat across the northern neck of the once-peninsula.  As time progressed, so too did the simple hovels and homes that formed around the Jordan stronghold, transforming into the thriving urban metropolis it is today.

Located in the heart of the city is the Tower, a towering sky rise that has been built and expanded over time, in addition to the King's Wood, a sprawling park that sits before the Tower.

The Tower
The Tower is the name given to the one and only government center, in addition to the official residence of the Jordan family.  It is the tallest building in all of the city and Kingdom of Gilea, and for a time it was the tallest building in the world before being usurped.

Originally the Tower was just that:  a tower.  Following a devastating fire centuries ago that decimated much of the palace, the stone and mortar tower was the only surviving structure of the fire, and henceforth became the home of the ruling family.  Over time it has evolved, it's stone structure built over in exchange for steel and glass, but parts of the old structures and builds can still be found through out the building's lower levels.

It's subterranean levels hold the old dungeons and family crypt, in addition to secure bunkers and server rooms that power the Tower's technology.

Throughout the looming tower, there are numerous offices that allow the Tower to be the main and only government building in the whole of the city.  It is here that the kingdom is run and maintained.

The Assembly Room is one of the more significant rooms.  Overlooking The King's Road's end at the steps of the palace, and the King's Wood, the Assembly room is where the King often has his business take place.  His war council and cabinet members sit upon one side of the crescent table, while the King occupies the center of the other side.  Behind the Council is the audience section, where peers and guests of the realm and kingdom are invited to sit and observe.

Among the top levels of the Tower are the Royal Apartments.  These rooms serve as the private and personal residence of the Royal Family in the city.

The Assembly Room

The entrance of The Royal Apartments

The Tower

The King's Council
The King's Council meets within the Assembly Room and help to advise and inform the King or Queen of the latest goings on in the Kingdom.  Key positions include The Secretary of State, Attorney General, Commanders of the Military Branches, etc. etc., in addition to the Commander of the King's Swords

The King's Swords
The King's Swords are an elite group of skilled warriors who are charged with the protection of the King and his Family.  These seven knights are considered to be one of the most prestigious of the entire military, and are to be stationed with the Royal Family at all times.

This elite, honor guard has been in existence since the beginning of the Kingdom.  Their ranks have been filled with figures of legend.  In the past, they have served as champions of the royal family in times of royal combat or trials by combat.

Social Issues and Miscellaneous Items
This section here is an attempt to possibly clarify some questions and inquiries about society and social issues within the kingdom.  It will be expanded over time to match questions that come up.

  • Gender Equality:  Generally speaking, women and men share equal rights and equal pay.  It has evolved over time to a more equal stance, thanks in large part to a stretch of three progressive-minded Queens a few centuries ago.  Women are seen as equals, are paid and respected as such, and may serve in the military and combat situations.
  • Racial Equality:  As with above, individuals of various races and ethnicities enjoy equal rights and protections under the King's Law.  This was not true in earlier times, but has evolved into a more inclusive and equal for all.
  • Gay Marriage and LGBTQ Rights:  This has been a sensitive issue in recent years.  While generally popular among the people, gay marriage and LGBTQ rights and protection have had difficulties gaining traction among the more elite of society, who favor a more traditionalist and religious view.  The King has yet to publicly declare his views on the matter.
  • Incest:  While once acceptable and even common among the Kings and Queens of old, Incest has largely been seen as a abomination.  Still, rumors do come up once in a while of relations between the royal family.  For the sake of this story, incest is frowned upon and forbidden by the King and Queen, but what may happen behind closed doors is up fine.
  • Health Care:  Heath Care is provided to all within the Kingdom at free of charge.
  • Prostitution:  Prostitution is legal within the Kingdom.  It has often been said and rumored that a secret and private group of sex workers live within the Tower and serve the Royal family, but has never been publicly confirmed.
  • Crime and Punishment:  For serious and heinous crimes, The King's Justice is reserved for criminals who have been sentenced to death by the various judges and juries of the kingdom.  This often entails beheading.
  • Illegal Substances:  Drugs and narcotics such as cocaine, meth, heroin, etc., are considered banned substances and the possession of which can result in time in jail or prison.
  • Exports:  The Kingdom earns most of it's international income mainly through the trade of technology and manufacturing, having replaced oil production as the chief export.
  • Governance:  The King or Queen is the head of government in this absolute monarchy.  Their word is law.  In recent years, there has been increasing calls for more freedom and less power to the King, but the status quo has remained.  Ruling over the various states and territories of the kingdom are Governors, a selected lord or lady of the specific state or territory designated to govern over local and state issues, but report to the King or Queen.
  • Line of Succession:  The eldest legitimate child of the King or Queen, regardless of gender, is always next in line to the throne.
  • Technology and Weaponry:  If it exists in our world, it exists in the game.
  • Religion:  For the sake of my own sanity and everyone else's, the major religions of our world exist in the game world.

International Politics
The Kingdom of Gilea is one of the world's superpowers.  This is due in large part to a formidable military and strong economy.  It's allies have changed over the years into a band of the remaining monarchies of the world and the smaller buffer states that border the Kingdom.

One of the biggest rivals in the global stage is Elysium, a large, close-by country that has overthrown and rejected it's monarchy.  Around the world, Elysium has become a shining example of what a country run by the people could and should be as it becomes a force to be reckoned with.

  • The Kingdom of Gilea:  The Kingdom of Gilea is one of the more powerful and influential nations in the region.  Built upon trade, manufacturing, and the development of technology, in addition to oil production, the Kingdom boasts a strong economy that has helped to cement it's status.  A formidable military has often been said to be one of the best in the world.
  • Elysium:  The Nation of Elysium is the largest neighbor to Gilea, and it's biggest rival.  Formerly a kingdom in it's own right, it's people over threw the Preuit Family Dynasty in exchange for a democratic republic some seventy years ago.  For some time it has struggled in the aftermath of the overthrow, trying to stabilize it's economy and bring the country together, but in recent years it has seen a resurgence, with an economy focused more upon military development and manufacturing.  It has become a shining beacon for various nations of what a country who rejects it's monarchy can be.  Gilea is it's chief rival, due largely to a great dislike and distaste for monarchies.  In recent years Elysium has stepped up it's efforts to subtly try and influence politics in the neighboring country.  Some have publicly accused Elysium of instigating secessionist uprisings in the east, but lack concrete evidence.  Reports of deep cover spies and insurgents have been various but unproven.
  • Eris:  Eris is an older republic that claims to be the direct heirs to the ancient Tomalain Empire.  They are governed by a the Erisian Congress, a bicameral house of elected officials and nobility.  Their military is a considerable force, scattered about the large country.  It's economy is built largely upon industry and the harvesting of it's natural resources, particularly gem stones and precious metals.  Eris is more closely aligned with Elysium, but strongly favors it's own independence on the global stage.
  • The Disputed Lands:  A triangular piece of land that shares borders with Eris, Elysium and Gilea, the Disputed Lands have all been claimed by each of the three nations at some point in history.  It's lands have been bloodied more times than can be recalled over the rich resources beneath the Earth.  For the past fifty years, it has been neutral territory, a demilitarized zone, but has always been a point of contention between the three nations.
  • Valian:  The Kingdom of Valian is a small kingdom that is based largely upon it's interior forestry and fishing reserves.  It is a close ally of Gilea, and both countries share claim over the Bay of Glory.
  • Calum:  Calum is a vast, sparsely populated country whose population centers are based in the northern part of the region.  It is an oligarchy, based around the Calain Council, whose positions upon the council are hereditary.  The main export of it's country is it's natural resources, including stone, gems, and other various metals and glass.  It is a loose supporter of Gilea.
  • Lus:  Lus is a smaller, landlocked republic that is poor when compared to it's neighbors in the region.  It is an economy built upon the harvesting of it's natural chemical resources from a land that is mostly inarable.  It depends closely upon the Kingdom of Gilea, and has often been said that Lus exists only because Gilea allows it.
  • Remus:  Remus is a smaller, newer republic born from Tyrius.  Frustrated that it's area was the most populous out of the incredibly vast country, it's taxes paying for much of the country's remote infrastructure, Remus seceded from Tyrius close to twenty years ago.  Built upon manufacturing, it's economy is growing, and has served as something of an inspiration to those in the eastern reaches of Gilea for independence.
  • Tyrius:  Tyrius is one of the largest countries in the region, and also the most sparsely populated.  It is a rocky land, full of mountains and valleys, in some places impassable during severe weather.  Tyrian trade is unstable, built largely around the harvesting of it's crops and oil.

Major Cities in Gilea
Capitol City is the largest and most populous city in the Kingdom.  Midway (modeled on Chicago) is another large and important city, located in the heartland of the country and has been known as a central hub in terms of transportation across the country.  On the south western coast sits South Beach (modeled on a combination of Miami and Los Angeles), a thriving coastal city.  In the east sits Highlands, the most populated city in the eastern regionThe furthest western point of land in Gilea is Last Light, an island that has become a thriving resort community in addition to hosting an array of military installations.

In the north sits the Disputed Lands, a region that is demilitarized and has been claimed by Elysium, Eris, and Gilea.  It has been a point of contention between all three in recent years, settling into an uneasy peace over the land.

The Reign of King Richard, the First of his Name, King of Gilea
The reign of King Richard, known in the early part of his reign as Richard the Unlikely, began on a cold and dreary April morning in 1965.  It was while he was serving as an Air Force pilot that he was roused from his bunk and informed of his brother, Edward, and father's, Lucas's, death.

For all of his young life, the King had never expected that he would truly become king.  His eldest brother, Edward, had been next in line, and had been groomed for the role ever since birth.  Finding himself thrust into the spotlight and throne, Richard felt a sense of uneasy unpreparedness as he was forced to perform his duty as sovereign and protector of the kingdom.  At once he left the air force base at Highlands in the eastern border, and went to Capitol City to rule.

His first decade as King was met with adversity and more than his fair share of challenges.  With an unprepared and unlikely king upon the throne, the vultures circled the throne, both foreign and domestic, looking to take advantage of the opportunity.  Across the region, many of the neighbors of Gilea began to prepare their militaries and arms for possible invasions, salivating at the opportunity of seizing more territory from their neighbor.  The vast country of Elysium began to openly talk of war, going so far as to mobilize their forces to the borders of Gilea and the disputed, demilitarized land between Elysium, Gilea, and Eris.  At home, in the eastern reaches of the kingdom, secessionist protests began to blossom, escalating into the illegal seizures of some of the petroleum fields and factories in the region.

While many prayed for the safety of the kingdom, lacking the confidence in the king so often viewed as gentle and soft, King Richard rose to the challenge as ably as any one person could in such difficult situations.  It was with a firm, but merciful hand, that he and the military regained control of the secessionist holdings, offering clemency and forgiveness behind the might of the Gilean Armies.  His travels around the region, meeting face to face with foreign heads of state in private meetings helped to re-establish the respect and strength in their minds.

There have been the occasional headaches and bumps in the road.  In the east, there still remains talk of secession and rebellion, as there always has been since the time before the civil war that nearly tore the country apart centuries ago.  For the most part, this has been a bloodless affair in recent years, with nothing but rumblings and grumblings among the commoners of the region.  It was not until the 1980's, and the Hart Family, that blood had to be shed when the family, and it's conspirators, were executed for the raising of an army.  Since then, their name, and the names of their smaller house allies, have been synonymous with what happens with those who truly challenge the crown.

Beyond the troubles of the east, the Kingdom has largely seen grown and prosperity among it's people.  Industry continues to roar, breathing new life and wealth into a growing kingdom and economy.  Abroad, the Kingdom has never been stronger than it is at that moment, with nothing but optimistic outlooks for a bright future.

FAQs

Who is the GM?
GnothiSeauton for now.  I am open to having others step up and be co-GMs.

How is the game going to be played?
This is intended to be a sandbox, open world, freeform story, without a system.  There will be a general storyline and events, but the main point of the story is interacting with others and forming your own side stories.

What is the rating of the group, or what board will this game be placed?
It's unrated, in a sense.

For the sake of creative freedom, this will be placed in the extreme section.  However, with the header and warning tags, it should help to avoid people accidentally reading things they don't want to read.

Is this LGBTQ friendly?
Absolutely.

Is there anything I need to watch or read?
No.  Other than the info provided here, you don't need to have seen a show or movie or read books.  This is largely inspired by the show Kings that aired on NBC, in addition to Game of Thrones and Tyrant, but this is largely an original story and group.

Can I create a member of the Royal Family?
You can, but it's asked that you approach me first and discuss your idea and concept before going through with creating the sheet.

What are the Rumors and Gossip section of the character sheet?  Do I need to fill that out?
The Rumors and Gossip section is to help people have an easier time getting involved in the story.  Rumors and gossip are a part of every day court life and politics, sometimes fueled on by the people themselves, or their enemies.

If you are a servant or commoner, you do not need to fill it out.  However, if you are a member of Court, a Lord or Lady, or member of the Royal Family, you must provide at least one.

What do I do with an completed character sheet?
Please PM it to me to review.  I will not review sheets that are posted here in the thread, and will consider them nothing more than works in progress.

Rules for Character Creating

  • Please look over these rules before starting on a character.
  • Each writer is allowed three maximum characters.
  • Members of the Royal Family are on a limited basis, and are not on a first come, first serve basis. A concept must be pitched to me first, and have my approval, before a character sheet can be submitted.  These are the central characters, and are the most public characters in the world.  As such, they will receive and increased level of scrutiny.  It is asked that only committed writers attempt a member of a royal family, as it is extremely difficult to try and write off a member of the royal family when their writer decides to leave.
  • Characters should be eighteen years of age or older.
  • LGBTQ Characters are more than welcome.
  • Finished Characters must be submitted to me by PM.  I will not read or review an unfinished character sheet.
  • Please have patience when sending in a character sheet.  If I do not respond within forty eight hours, please PM me with a polite nudge.

Important Updates with Regards to Character Creation

  • November 18th, 2016:  As of today, I am going to be very strict on allowing additional members of the immediate Royal family.  We currently have four children, the King, the Queen, and the Queen Mother, in addition to several extended cousins and illegitimate children.  My natural inclination is to say no to additional family members, unless it has direct ties to an existing family member (i.e. a previously mentioned brother in character sheets or IC posts), or is a considerably good idea.  This does not affect those who have previously pitched ideas and are working on character sheets at present.
  • November 18th, 2016:  As of today, if you wish to create a foreign dignitary, foreign royalty, any member of a foreign government, you must discuss your concept and character's homeland with me before submitting a sheet.  If you do submit a character sheet to me without prior discussion and my explicit consent, I will ignore your sheet outright.

I loved Kings. I could see creating a character for this. Maybe a Princess or one of the King's Swords.

Awesome, Sally :)

Right now, I have the King written up, his eldest child/heir, and the main antagonist leader written up in the world building thread.  I wanted to wait a little bit longer and see what sort of interest there is before opening up character creation show them off.

This gives me a Tyrant Feel, great show, similar concept but set in a small middle eastern modern kingdom.

A great and underrated show.

With enough interest, I'm going ahead and opening up character submission.

I went ahead and added the character creation information in this thread, but you'll also find it, and some characters of mine and for the story, in the Game Information thread

Any questions can be asked here, or through PMs if you'd like to keep it private.

Sometime later today or tomorrow I'll open up an OOC.

I'm hoping that a grand Masquerade Ball will be the first main event as a way to bring most characters together.

Unquestionably interested in this! I may have an idea for a member of the royal family to pitch to you as well.

For those that are considering concepts for that, is there anything we should know besides that you will be accepting on a limited basis and that the idea must be discussed with you first?

Hi there, Faustus.

I can't think of anything specific that stands out which needs to really be known.  I would say that the age range can be anywhere from 18 to 40, as I have the eldest child at forty years old.

I should mention, I guess, that in addition to the Royal Family living in the Tower, there is also a sort of country residence, about an hour away, that is open to members of the royal family.

No problem at all.

If you, or anyone for that matter, has any specific questions, I'm more than happy to answer.

Okay, so with further thought Im thinking one of the King's Swords with a Gal Gadot face claim. I'd like for her to be close to a particular member of the royal family but I know I'll have to wait until there are more royals.

The prince idea is still there but I have less of an idea where I would go with that.

She sounds awesome already.

Damn, I was thinking of doing a King's Swords lady, but I accidentally posted my question about it in the wrong damn thread, lol.

Oh well.
O/O: I was going to make a barebones F-list as a rough summary, but then it logged me out and I lost my progress, so I made a VERY barebones F-list instead: Here.

You can still do a King's Sword member if you wish.  It's a small group of about seven or so.

Maybe I'll wait to see what Kokaine has in mind for her character so I don't make a character that's too similar.

I love Gal Gadot so much.  She's so naturally beautiful and she seems really down to earth.
