RETRIBUTION

2169. 10 years after the successful termination of the Turian Warlord Casca Corvinus and coverup of his and the mission's true nature. Following a dozen terrorist attacks on human colonies and one in the Citadel by a mysterious group only known as Symbios, the Council sends out STG-agents to locate the organization's base of operations. Through the mysterious nomad race Warengions they track their activities to the human colony of Fulci Phi, a fascist splinter faction at the edge of the Terminus Systems. A Turian Spectre is assigned to put together a team and finds a link between Fulci Phi and the Corvinus mission. It is time for the old team to be assembled once more to follow up this loose thread in the Corvinus case.

So here we are again. I have been working slowly on this project, which is a sequel to an adventure I lead about a year ago named Mass Effect: Vengence. The overall plot of that isn't important here though. Those who return already know it (which are most of the original players with some new cast) and those of you who are new doesn't need to know all the details. If you feel you do, ask around in game later on when you meet the originals.

So what is this all about? Well, a Mass Effect forum rp which tries to retain some of the freedom and sense of consequences that the original series had. For example, our dear friends who are returning will find that some of the things they did in Vengence will have an impact here in Retribution. Equally so, new players will find that what they chose to do in the game will reflect on how people react to them and possibly leave some consequences in the third installment (yes, I'm already planning a third, don't spill the beans on me).

Some basic things about timelines and such. The game will take place in 2169. To put it in perspective, it's three years before Shepard joins the Alliance Military, one year after Kaidan accidentally kills Vyrnus, 12 years after the First Contact War and 15 years before the first installment of Mass Effect. Obviously there are no signs of Reapers, the Geth are still beyond the Veil and Saren is still mostly mentally stable. Human biotics have just started to turn into the eligible age of military service and the post war tensions between humans and turians have started to simmer down.

Some basic things about the RP itself. Nonsystem, Oath of Drake applies, will most likely be Exotic Small Group in the Bondage, D/s, S&M board (just too keep the options open for those who feel the groove) and use the CS provided. It already has five (5) participants and is looking for three (3), out of which one I would like to recruit a player willing to play an 18-20 year old human biotic female with some of her early background already laid out but with the last ten yers free to do as pleasing with, although this is not essential, it would just warm the cockles of my heart and certainly make the five original players let out a gasp.

Questions can be asked right here, no need to be shy and none are too dumb to be answered. After all, I might have been dumb enough not to cover some point here.

Name: Keep in mind the cultural naming-traditions of the different races. No turians named Bill will be allowed, no matter how awesome he is.

Race: Easy enough.

Age: 18 and above please.

Class: The classic six!

Class Specialization: Further specialization into your chosen field.

Appearance: Pics, descriptions or both!

History: No novel needed, just the most important points in their lives. The rest is up for you to portray in game.

Powers: Cap at four, your own mix of techs and biotics!

Weaponry: Have two of any or three small, whichever fits your fancy.

Sexual Orientation: Straight, gay, bi, pan? Also include what other species you'd be willing to "socialize" with to avoid overly awkward situations.

Preferred Position: Sub, dom, switch, hexapolyhedron?

I have to admit, I'm a little interested in this one, though my knowledge of the Mass Effect Universe isn't as great as it should be. (I've played all three games many of times, but I still feel like I don't know enough, haha.) But I've been wanting to do a Mass Effect group roleplay for ages! So if you'll have me, I be honored to write with you and the other members so far. (Of course, I understand you need to approve a CS, just getting over excited, haha.)

Just a couple of quick question, are you taking any races or is it limited to specific ones? What sort of posting speed are you expecting?

Can't wait to hear from you (:

Wargtass

So far I think we'll keep it to the Council races (Turians, Salarians and Asari), humans and Quarians. I'd like to keep posts up to at least 2-3 a week with some lenience for real life and muse-breakdown of course. As for knowledge of the universe, if you have played the games you are more than qualified.

Thank you for answering my questions. Sounds brilliant. I will try and finish my Character sheet for you (as I've already started) and will hopefully get it up later this evening. Thanks again, Wargtass.

Here is my Character Sheet. Hope everything looks alright and is in order. Of course, if you have any feedback or suggestions, I would love the input. If something doesn't look right or fit into the story as you'd like it to, please let me know and I will do my best to edit the profile accordingly. Got this out sooner than I imagined I would. (Was having trouble with the History, but once I started writing I continued to babble. It's one of the things I'm not sure about, so any feedback would be gratefully accepted.)

Name: Ledra Valene.

Race: Salarian.

Age: 24 years.

Gender: Female.

Class: Engineer.

Class Specialization: Ledra is a Tech specialist and is therefore handy with decrypting and reprogramming networks or mechs and such. She is also very handy with first aid, but still considers herself to be a novice at medical practice; this doesn't mean she isn't afraid to try and is actually very good at it.

Appearance: It is natural for Salarians to have elongated bodies, wide set hips (though not like a Turiens) and a very arched back; Ledra is no exception. She stands at around 5'9" and weighs around 130lbs. Her skin tone is mostly a fleshy peach colour, though around her eyes, her hands and wrists, her calves and just above her knees, her groin, the hollow of her back and the tips of her horn-like appendages protruding from the top of her skull gradually become a darker colour; almost crimson. Her large, oval eyes are black, though her irises are presumed to be a dark red, though the colour is hard to see. As the Salarians are an amphibious race, her fingers and toes are webbed.

History: Ledra was brought up on the Citadel by two Salarian parents and even though she has helpful knowledge of other worlds and solar systems, she has yet to travel to many of them. Her father taught her all she knows about Tech and it was something she excelled in from the beginning. Her mother was a doctor on the Citadel and Ledra always aspired to be like her; medical science was always intriguing to her, but she didn't take up learning the practice until her mother's death. Her mother was off world, though Ledra doesn't recall ever being told where specifically, when she was murdered, again the information was unspecific. It drove her father into a less enthusiastic state and he eventually passed away as well, simply from age; one of the downsides to Salarian Biology. Ledra remained on the Citadel for most of her life, studying both her father and mother's works and research while also gaining a deeper intergalactic knowledge.

In her more recent years, Ledra served a year at C-sec, but found the work to be boring and slow, which is why she resigned after such a short period of time. She found a job working on tech around the Citadel, mostly terminals and computer electronics, but found it very slow paced as well and resigned from that. She made quite a name for herself; mostly for hoping from job to job all over the Citadel rather than her skills, but a name all the same.

It was later on that she found her mother had kept a secret ‘lockbox’ of sorts at the Citadel's bank full of research on Human Colonies out in the Terminus Systems. She found it very strange and almost random, since it was never something she'd mentioned to either Ledra or her father before. None of the colonies stood out to her in particular, and Ledra had to admit she wasn't particularly versed in Human knowledge or interaction, but as she continued through the piles of research, a photo caught her attention; her mother, stood beside a human male, arms around each other and smiling. It was strange and there was no indication of who he was or where he was from, but it didn't look like it had been taken too long before her mother's death.

Powers:
•   Sabotage.
•   Combat Drone.
•   AI Hacking.
•   First Aid//Unity.

Weaponry:
•   Thunder Assault Rifle VII. ( Damage: 273 – Shots before Overheat: 51 – Accuracy: 24 )
•   Brawler Pistol VIII. ( Damage:  208 – Shots Before Overheat: 26.3 – Accuracy: 77 )

Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual/Bi-curious. Ledra is open to interaction from any species/race.

Preferred Position: Submissive.

I'm still in. I was waiting for you to get this posted up. I'll use my ID from my other RP since Raven is my official Mass Effect Character, I'll note changes to the Bio as they relate to this RP.

She's only O-4, Lieutenant Commander at this point.
In Civilian Clothes
Race: Human
History: Prior Part 1: Raven's father was a highly respected soldier in the Alliance fleet, Raven always looked up to her father and loved him despite him rarely spending time with the family. Then one day her father's ship was destroyed. Unfortunately as a military operation most of the details surrounding his death were kept secret. Raven joined the NCIS to investigate her father's death but her superiors had other plans, forcing Raven's search on the backburner behind her more 'important' missions. Since the previous RP: Investigating her father's death, Raven was paired up with a Turian agent named Xen Tolkien. The two have since established and on-and-off relationship. Eventually Raven would be promoted to O-4, even serving as XO briefly on the SSV Coral Sea. During her investigation Raven found some things that would put a shock to her, even after everything they went through on the Casca mission. She was put in the psych ward for several months which gave her kind of a stigma with other alliance soldiers. After being released and cleared of any psychological trauma, Raven was unfortunately relegated to desk work until her superiors were contacted to send her on a new mission.
Personality: Raven is tough and logical, during combat she rarely has time for compassion which she only shows outside the battlefield. Being raised strictly military, Raven has a hard time dealing with civilians and comes off as socially awkward to most. She still has nightmares and occasional flashbacks from her ordeal finding her father, she also retains a severe hatred of anything synthetic due to the hallucinations she suffered which lead her to claim the Geth killed him (which she still insists despite evidence otherwise). She is also shown to be reckless, while generally thinking before she acts, she seems not to care about personal injury in the line of duty, once taking a shotgun to the chest and still pursuing the enemy until he was taken into custody, despite personal risk.
Powers: Overload, Concussive Shot, Inferno Grenade, Incendiary Ammo
Weaponry: Sokolov IX Shotgun, Raikou VIII Pistol, M-451 Firestorm
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Preferred Position: No Preference
Relationship Status: Available (Her and Xen only hook up to cure their lonliness, neither of them have issue with the other having a one-night-stand or long-term relationship with someone else.)
Availability: Open to humans, interested in Turians (Most of her boyfriends have been Turian)

Latooni Subota

Hi guys! I'm one of the original players, albeit I'll be coming in with a new character. My ol' girl is too busy being a diplomat and shirking her duties so she can work on her cybernetics. Meet Alice, Rebecca's . . sort-of adopted daughter.

Name: Alice Hackett
Race: Human
Class: Sentinel
Class Specialization: Human Plus

Eezo exposure in-uterus affects everyone differently, especially back in the early days of humanity's first experiences with eezo. For Alice, aside from the cosmetic changes, it's given her some rather extreme increases in her ability to soak in and recall information, and this has lead to some unique methods of utilizing her biotic abilities.

Appearance:

History: Alice Hackett isn't even an actual member of the Hackett family. Her parents were a pilot and co-pilot for a cargo company back in the Sol system. They were on-site at Singapore International Spaceport when an Eezo transport ship was destroyed in an accident, exposing Alice's then-pregnant mother with dust-form element zero. Her father was injured in the accident and eventually died, and her mother died from complications during childbirth, leaving the girl to be taken in by a government-sponsored orphanage.

During Alice's childhood she was ostracized by the other children due to her pink hair, slate-blue eyes, and unusual flushed skin-tone . . . when Alice realized that she was significantly smarter than the other children, this certainly didn't help matters. The girl decided to do what she could to ignore them, and just focused on studying instead, reading material FAR above her level as soon as she could get it. Like other survivors, she began to exhibit telekinetic abilities, and suffer from debilitating migraines, eventually being tracked down and forcefully recruited to the Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training program. She proved to have unusually strong biotics, as well as harsh side effects, before her L1 experimental implant had a catastrophic failure during a particularly torturous series of telekinesis tests, crippling the girl and causing her to be washed out.

Through mere chance Rebecca Hackett had been working on her advanced robotics and prosthetics experiments on Jump Zero with the Alliance Military, and managed to (with a combination of political clout, veiled threats, and bribery) squirrel the now-crippled girl back to the Citadel. After a not-so-pleasant row with her father, she adopted the girl as her own, and restored Alice's mobility with her Warengion-based cybernetics. Now sporting an artificially-enhanced spinal-cord, a pair of cybernetic arms, and a new experimental (And superior, if you believe Rebecca's claims) L2 biotic implant, Alice has proved to be quite the valuable assistant to Rebecca. Over the last few years she's been learning everything she could about xenobiology, military matters, and the sciences from her adoptive-mother (whom she really considers more of a sister to be honest). Whereas Rebecca has retired from accepting 'special' missions to do things for the Alliance and Citadel, Alice is more than willing to get out into the universe and do things like Rebecca did when she was Alice's age.

Biotic Powers: Throw, Pull
Tech Powers: Tech Armor, Overload, First Aid

Weaponry: M-4 Shuriken SMG, M-8 Avengers, Mark 14 Incendiary Grenades

Sexual Orientation: Bicurious
Preferred Position: Mildly Submissive

Hmm, I'm interested Wargtass and co. if there's still room. I do wonder if there was anything specific you guys need for it before I began to come up with a character though? Concerning something like race/class diversity and male to female ratio. Since there are some people from the previous group coming back to this one and I don't know what kind of characters they all had and such.

Well then howdy everyone. My name is PinkProfessional. You may call me Pink, Professional or whatever other nickname you can conspire to call me.

In the Previous of Wargtass' games, I played a semi-psycopathic Asari commando, a character I'm retiring this time around.

I'mma play a Human guy: Because why not?

Edit: or a Drell...that could be fun. Hell, even a Turian.

Decide brain...decide!

Wargtass

As for your character xSnorkleRainbow, it looks very exciting. Diversity is one of the key elements of Mass Effect that I enjoy and I have never seen anyone make a swing at the female side of the Salarian race before. I am sending you a PM with further thoughts about your background.

Yelp, good point, Odan, I kind of forgot about the ratios there for a moment. As is, there are only two males among the previous group (one a krogan) so I guess a human  male would be handy as I can only provide so many male NPCs. As for class, I guess anything goes, the former crew is pretty well rounded out.

For those curious, OHWceta and Latooni Subota are two of the old crew, Raven Hart being the only returning character so far while Alice Hackett's mentor and adoptive mother Rebecca was Latooni's original character (yes, Hackett as in Admiral Hackett's daughter and now adoptive granddaughter). Still waiting for the return of DigitLninja and CmdrRenegade.

Welcome back Pink, I'm sending you a suggestion regarding J'alara that I think could be interesting regarding the blue eyed wunderkid from last time around. Looking forward to seeing your new incarnation!

Oh brilliant! I'm so happy you like the look of her.

I was a little iffy about attempting a female Salarian, simply because like...only 10% of the entire race are female, but I couldn't resist (: They're so interesting and the image I found is so pretty. Couldn't help myself.

And that's awesome, I look forward to receiving a PM from you.

Also, I look forward to seeing more characters and such (: ♥

PMs and such sent, I'll be back in a while to see the progression and eat the food I am about to prepare.  ;D

Ok, so if it's not conflicting or too similar to any of the returning character I may go with a male Quarian infitrator. I'll get to work on a sheet and hopefully have it up by tonight.

Pink Professional

Curses. My plans to go Infiltrator :<

Odanrav

Lol no worries, soldier would work perfectly fine for the character I have in mind as well, so there are no conflicts.

Name: Stephen Grayson.

Race: Human

Age: 26

Class: Ye Olde Infiltrator

Class Specialization: Assassination and Espionage

Appearance: Stephen is a reasonable height, standing at 6 foot, 2 inches. He has fistfuls of blonde hair and striking hazel eyes that seem to constantly be analyzing. Stephen is talented at wearing faces, and you'll commonly see him with a smile on his lips. Something that seems to give people the silly impression that he is, in fact, some sort of Happy-go-lucky joker character. This is, however, a falsehood. Sometimes in flashes of annoyance, or when people seem not to be looking, they will see that Stephen's eyes have a habit of shifting to a cold, almost dead gaze: betraying the more hidden face behind an assassin's trained mask.

Underneath whatever attire Stephen wears hides a great few oddities. He is as toned and handsome underneath as you'd expect except for his left side. From the left side of his breast and all the way down he left arm, the entirety of his flesh is replaced by synthetic cybernetics. The results of a rather traumatic accident 4 years ago that separated the assassin from his flesh and part of his lung. The synthetics now keep him alive, as well as providing him a much needed second arm.

History: For all intents and purposes, Stephen is a very lucky man. He has; Good looks, intellect, a keen wit, good connections and a skill with a rifle most dream about, wrap that in an 'agent of the Shadow broker' bow and you've got yourself a dream package. A man with constant income, a steady job and a way to keep the boredom at bay. At least that was the case some...four years ago? The story itself is hidden in the archives of the Alliance's hidden and classified files. Something never seen by the council and known only by the Alliance and the Shadow broker.

Stephen worked under for the Shadow broker from the day he reached the Citadel, 7 years ago: for it was one of the Shadow broker's agents who paid for him to get their, after having been scammed by the 19 year old human from one of the alliances' first colonies. At first, he would start near the bottom of the ladder, acting as anything from liaison to hired muscle. It wasn't until his first assassination mission that Stephen truly began to be noticed. The execution was flawless and left a good impression. Stephen climbed in the ranks of the Shadow Broker's organization for a good few years. Earning a name for himself, a nickname to be exact: Mjolnir.

What happened next is where the red tape starts. 4 years ago, on a mission that is wrapped up in files that are hidden from anyone but the most elite of the Alliance's higher-ups or the most trusted in the Shadow brokers, yet one thing is widely known: Stephen was betrayed. Someone had tipped off the mark, a Blue suns merc who'd pissed off the wrong person. Sadly for Stephen, the Blue Sun decided that the best way to deal with the situation was a tactical Cobra missile to his Transport cruiser. Micheal didn't crawl out of the wreckage, as he was pinned under the weight of most of the cruiser. His entire left arm and part of his chest, crushed. If not for a good bit of luck, Stephen 'Mjolnir' Grayson would be dead these days. Yet a Doctor with far too much Medigel passed by and stabilized him long enough to get him to a hospital, where he was put onto the path of recovery.

It was suspected that Stephen would be left permanently incapacitated by the attempt on his life. A synthetic arm was one thing, but a lung puncture of that scale was not something thought to be irreparable. Stephen made a deal with the Shadow Broker: a last job, if you will. He paid nearly every credit to his name in order to gain access to some of the most illegal and experimental synthetic technology. The majority of it was fairly standard, a new arm was easy to get, but it was the Lung patch that would be an issue. No mere Software of VI could calibrate and control the contractions of a semi-smart, expanding synthetic material. So Stephen did the only rational thing, he had a limitered AI installed into the Arm, controlling both it and the Lung patch.

It took two whole years for Stephen to accumulate the parts, undergo Sixty three sessions of surgery as well as a painful physiotherapy course. At the age of Twenty-four, having already been scarred for life, Stephen walked out of the hospital that had been a second home for over Seven hundred days, never returning again.

Two days after his release, the Blue suns commander was found dead, a sniper round in between his eyes.

In the currant days, Stephen works as a double life. Part time member of a private security firm's board of directors and part time Shadow Broker officer. He works on the Citadel even now and acts as one of the Shadow broker's top agents aboard the Citadel.

Powers: Tactical Cloak, Sabotage, Overload, Assassination

Weaponry: M-92 Mantis, M-11 Suppressor

Sexual Orientation: Straight

Preferred Position: More dominating tendencies.

Name: Nel’Taan vas Nomdae

Race: Quarian

Age: 34

Class: Soldier

Class Specialization: Nel is a shock trooper and explosives expert by trade wielding powerful shields and heavy ordinance. Wading into the thick of battle and doing as much damage as possible. But he is also a capable marksmen and can take out enemies at medium range if needed.

Appearance: The former soldier of the flotilla is a surprisingly intimidating physical specimen. Nel stands taller (6'1") and bulkier (218 lbs. in suit) than the average Quarian male, and possesses considerable strength for someone of his race. He wears a specially made suit with greater power output that enables his shield amplifiers to become doubly as strong when a situation arrises that requires it. The suit is a blend of grey and brown fabric draping on top of, and weaving through, a heavy combat mesh going from his head to toes. His mask is a dark blue-ish tint, with grey plating framing that go with the bright silvery shine that gleams from his shrouded eyes in certain lights. Underneath his helmet, as with many other Quarians, Nel’s exact appearance is a mystery except for the few different partners he had upon the flotilla, though none of them ever seemed disappointed.

History: Nel was born Nel’Taan nar Khai to a father who was a simple engineer, and a mother who was captain of the Khai. One of the many liveships occupying the flotilla’s civilian fleet. A place he never truly felt he belonged. As Nel grew older he began to resent his lot in life more and more, and to a lesser extent the fate of his people as a whole. How they’d been reduced to a shamble of their former selves because of mistakes long dead ancestors made. And in his early teens, Nel made a promise to himself that he was going to make a difference, and he was going to lead his people back to their homeland one day.

When he came of age he went upon his pilgrimage. And where many of his people would have been satisfied with bringing back a simple gift or at most a small vessel. But Nel’s sights were set much higher. Of all places he went to the Terminus systems and to Omega station. There, he hooked up with a small band of mercs who called themselves the Dying Stars. It was a group of no more than a dozen men, mostly Batarians. But they were well equipped and flew around in a battle tested frigate that Nel had his eyes upon. He signed on as a technical expert and ship mechanic, taking the knowledge most Quarians learned from a young age and putting it to use to get to his real ends. Nel’s plan was to join the merc band and learn the ropes of becoming a soldier, a fighter. And in time he did, and he earned the trust of his comrades as a formidable warrior.

After 2 years of running with the small squad, an opportunity finally arose. The Dying Stars picked a fight with a particularly nasty Krogan who happened to be apart of Blood Pack. Which led to a fight and the death of all of Nel’s comrades, something he was frankly thankful for believing it was only a matter of time before the group met their end. Without anyone to stop him, Nel immediately took the frigate for himself and set off to go home to the Migrant Fleet.

Once there, he offered the frigate and the large quantities of weapons and other equipment inside it as a gift to the captain of the Nomdea. One of the largest and oldest dreadnaughts in the entire flotilla. The captain graciously accepted Nel onto the ship, and soon gave him a soldier’s position like he always wished for. But that wasn’t enough for Nel, he felt like he needed to be in a position of leadership. So he trained harder, and rose in ranks over long and hard years.

Until he reached the point where he succeeded the man who accepted him onto the ship and became the new captain of the Nomdae. In retrospect, that may have been a bad promotion for Nel to take. After his new found power, the 32 year old Quarian became far more bold with both the Admirality Board and the Conclave. Nel became by far the biggest promoter of the fleet finally taking action and returning to the Perseus Veil to go to war with the Geth and take back Rannoch. He stirred passion within the men under his command, and inspired those outside of it to take action finally and reclaim what his people had lost three centuries earlier.

Over two long years, Nel waged a war of words with the highest echelons of Quarian government, and gained a decent amount of supporters within the heavy fleet. Though he still faced heated resistance from those within the other major fleets that continually stymied his efforts. Eventually, his supporters began to openly suggest proclaiming Nel as the new admiral of the heavy fleet and breaking apart from the flotilla to wage war on their own. Something Nel knew was foolish and a bad tactic, but he went along with it in the hopes the Board would break to his will finally.

But they did not. And later a snafu occurred where several ships declared independence from the flotilla and pledged themselves to Nel’s command. Something Nel did not initiate and had no plans of doing, but was unable to stop from happening. Only then did he realize the zealots he had created by his long efforts. And that he was gradually tearing his people apart. Faced with the possibility of civil war, Nel surrendered himself over in realization that his people simply weren’t ready for the challenge to taking back their homeland. In doing so, all others were forgiven of all charges, and Nel alone was to suffer punishment. He was sentenced to permanent banishment from the Migrant Fleet for inciting rebellion and treason. Three days later he was given a small ship and his own personal belongings to pave his own way in the galaxy, forever exiled from the people he loved.

Powers:
- Armor Piercing Ammo
- Flashbang Grenade
- Sticky Grenade
- Fortification

Weaponry:
- M-37 Falcon
- M-96 Mattock
- M-3 Predator

Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual. Nel is somewhat biased towards council races, but could be swayed to find an attraction to them over time.

Preferred Position: Switch

Sorry for the length lol, I got on a bit of a role and couldn't stop. Anyway, hope he's acceptable :).

Name: Veyle Holden

Race: Human

Age: 18

Class: Adept

Class Specialization: Biotic Commando

Appearance: 5'8", 121 lbs., brown hair, brown eyes

History: The earliest of Veyle's memories begin when she was five years old, shortly after having been found by Casca Corvinus. Whether she repressed any prior memories as a defense mechanism after losing her birth parents or had them artificially wiped is unknown, but everything before that point is nothing more than a dark void. Her life as she knew it began with the Turian warlord, who explained that he and his crew had found her inside a small derelict ship, the last survivor, albeit barely. Casca gave Veyle all of the details, he'd always treated her like an adult even when she was far from being one, and she never doubted that he was telling the truth.

He became the only parent that she'd ever known, or at least remembered, and the rest of the crew was her extended family. She was loved, cared for, cherished and never forced to do anything against her will, not even train her gifts as a biotic. That was something that Veyle chose to pursue of her own volition when she was old enough to understand what Casca was trying to do and that it was necessary in order to save the galaxy, to prevent all life from being destroyed. She wanted to help, begged Casca to let her help even, despite understanding that she would be made an outcast and hated for it as he had because the masses simply could not understand the reckoning that was coming and what sacrifices had to be made to prevent it.

And then, as if Veyle was cursed to forever live her life in five year chapters that were intersected by heartbreaking and traumatizing events, the Citadel's assassins swooped in and took everything away, even her freedom. As if that weren't cruel enough, they brought her back to the very place where her father's misguided murder had been plotted, claiming that she'd been brainwashed and that she needed their help, but it was them who wanted to brainwash her.

She knew. She always knew. At first, Veyle rebelled and refused to acknowledge anything that her captors told her, but eventually came to the realization that they were in fact offering her the means to avenge Casca. Slowly, so as not to awaken too much suspicion, the girl became increasingly responsive. After some time, she even agreed to change her last name from Corvinus to Holden, some random name that she'd read in a history book, and her handlers were foolish enough to take it as a sign that their trickery had succeeded.

While Casca had never wanted to abuse Veyle's gifts for his own purposes, he had warned her that others would, and that the Council was especially desperate to get their hands on people like her. She quickly learned that this was true, and also that she could use their obsession with her to her advantage. So willing was everyone to believe that she'd abandoned her legacy and joined them that it made manipulating them far easier than it should have been.

For years Veyle payed the price for her ultimate vengeance, doing as she was told, saying what she was expected to say, suffering through a gauntlet of tests and exercises and shedding countless tears until finally her 'benevolent overseers' deemed her ready. Of course, had Veyle known what a golden opportunity she was going to be presented with at the end of it all, she'd have gladly endured twice as many hardships.
