This 'tard seems to think it's a good idea, and the forums are split on whether he's pulling a joke or really is this stupid.

Quote from: SomethingAmazing, of The Escapist Forums.Think about this: think about how much time you spend managing sexual emotions and performing the act on a weekly basis. Now multiply this number times around 6 billion. That is how much effort, energy and work that Humans are forfeiting by not looking for something to cure this problem. The technology to produce Humans without sex is readily available and in common use today. So population would not be a problem.(In fact, it would be more controlled and could help avoid an overpopulation problem) And without sexual tension, they could focus on more important things in the world.

It seems to be nothing but benefit from studying such a subject, yet Humans are putting next to no effort in this. Do we have a definite answer on this?

It sounds to me like the guy's grown up in his parents basement and has absolutely no human interaction or social skills. Applying his logic, all enjoyable activities, not just sex, are pointless and leading humanity no where, and that the only thing that should ever matter is 'progress', both scientifically and economically. I really feel for this guy... I'm surprised he has enough of a personal life to even take an interest in a video game forum. I can't see how he even plays games :/

Hunter

Did you see that he referred to it on a "weekly" basis?  Ah yes, someone lives in their own fantasy world there....

Rora

Definitely lives in his own world...weekly! Lets be honest if he was getting any he would amend that to hourly.

Will

Whah?  Okay, wow.  Apparently too much effort and resources go into getting laid, and we should just start artificially producing humans while we focus on other stuff.  And somehow remove the compulsion to mate from our brains while we're at it.  Something tells me the resources and effort involved in that feat of bioengineering, along with the resources and effort required to clone humans en masse, would far outpace the time we put into getting laid. :P  Sounds like the poster's had some bad experiences, and has become a little bitter.

I don't know - you'd really just have to slap an H on his head, add a laugh track, and Dave Lister saying 'You really are a smeghead!' while Cat corrects his stats about how much time is spent managing sexual emotions.  (The one thing that Cat would actually be able to provide stats on - but I'd call him as an expert ;D )

edit: just skimmed through some more of the thread and I really lol'd a lot at: Alright you fucking robot. That's a fun insult.

Well people don't have sex just because they want to reproduce or simply because there horny. Hes not taking into account the extremely close bond that grows between people that are sexually active with each other. Sure not everyone you sleep with you have to be head over heals in love with but if you are. If you care about the person your in bed with then the emotional high you can achieve is unlike anything else that you will ever experience. I think most people need that feeling, we long for it. Obviously this guys never touched anything close to that.

Addendum: If he thinks sex is bad, I can't wait to hear what he thinks about money....

MasterMischief

It sounds like he simply has no sex drive.  He should get together with my wife.  It is possible he is entirely serious and not entirely socially retarded.  I can not even bring myself to feel pitty for him because he likely does not feel like he is missing anything.

Imagine something you just are not that into that other people are (Twilight maybe).  Now imagine that it seems every other person on the planet spends the kind of energy in that thing as most people do in sex.  Can you not see how utterly perplexing that would be to you?

Will

Surely, but the premise for why it needs to go still doesn't hold water.  The idea that there's a more resource-effective way for humans to live is just untrue.

Totally. (No better example than Twilight >:)) I can't understand how there can be a cue of screaming girls (and guys) at an opening of a Twilight movie, where he can't understand the intimacy in sex or an 'excuse' to have sex with someone you love (or see any reason to have sex at all XD).

Well he's right about one thing; the time spent (read: wasted) over sex and sexual emotions...... I haven't even had sex yet and I spend most my time thinking about it  XD

Our lives are filled with inefficiency.  I am not convinced that is good or bad.  I do believe it to be true though.

The existence of friction makes everything we do mechanically inefficient.  It also allows us to walk across the floor.  *fails to look innocent*

Yes.  Friction does have its uses. >.>

Is it possible emotions act like a mental friction?  That without them, our lives would be like worker ants?

Salamander

Sex is one of the things that makes life interesting and enjoyable. Not the only thing, of course, but definitely one of 'em. Calling it inefficient is just missing the point completely. Get rid of all of the "inefficient", "unproductive" stuff- sex, love, art, humour etc, and what are we left with? Empty lives. Pointless lives. Meaningless lives.

camtipli

I guess he hasn't taken into account the fact that sex drive leads to productivity, and that the removal of sex drive can lead to a lack of motivation. Now, what impedes productivity is video gaming (I know this firsthand.)

Star Safyre

Also, let us not forget what sex does for the economy.  Countless products and services are created mostly by sexual desire and the quest to be sexually desired: pornography, intimate and fetish apparel, birth control, prescription and non-prescription drugs, plastic surgery, make-up, gym memberships, dating services, adult oriented movies, art... The list really goes on and on.  Removing sex from our economy would be a financial disaster of epic proportions.  If we couldn't sell sex, what the hell is left?!

If SomethingAmazing really is serious, I expect that he'll be walking a long and lonely road to push his ideas through.

Not me. Depending on your relationship status, that's a whole lot of free enjoyment you'd be giving up!

Well this is a case of extreme ratinoalisation basically, In my view.

You could imagine this person be totally supoortive of the 1984 government, where people are just workers, have no choice who they marry and only marry to mate

AtlasEros

I've met a few people in life that were basically against sexual activity, I found them all rather simple & hard to get along with.
