Just to check, is recruitment still open? I’d love to sign up as a civilian engineer, especially since the last one seems to have dropped out.

Cigars, massage and a comfy chair will just about do it - sent a character profile off to MagicalPen for approval.

It’s shamelessly jumping the gun, but I’ve got my first post ready to roll for when (er, if?) the character gets approved. Until then, I’m staring at my inbox and mashing refresh like a fiend.

I know you.

*Blowing a kiss back to Nymph.*
Yes, yes you do know me.

So I have two loose concepts currently. A marksman with non military background. A big game hunter of sorts, but more complex than just that. He would be an older character and one who is pretty well at home on a jungle planet, but he'd be kind of solitary by nature as a result. He's definitely not a Merc though, at least not in his mind. I also have a heavy weapons guy with a military background and a heavy plasma gun in mind (should such technology exist of course and I could make a good case for why I settled in that particular weapon rather than a machine gun or a gatling type cannon.)
Obviously there's no point in me working up both concepts, so which would be more useful and better received please?

Obviously I don’t speak on behalf of the group – you know, on account of not being part of it yet – but based on what you’ve said I’d pick the marksman… and even then, only because I don’t know the justification for the plasma gun. Any chance you could share just a few more details, if only to sate my curiosity?

Edit: It dawns on me that, given I’m asking someone else to share their character concepts, I should probably share mine too. For those who are interested, here’s the character sheet.

Name: Alexander Briggs

Rank / Occupation: Civilian Engineer

Age: 28

Physical Description: Standing at 78kg and 186cm (6’1” / 171 lbs), Alexander’s toned frame is more fast than powerful. His shaggy hair and scruffy attempt at a beard make for a sharp contrast to his expensive, immaculately maintained equipment. His blue eyes shine with a dark sense of humour and careful calculation, giving some forewarning about his rakish character.

Personality: Confident to the point of arrogance, Alexander is occasionally a little lax with the rules but nevertheless delivers results that accord with Roht’s high standards. He has a laidback and friendly demeanour, though he makes no secrets about his finely honed sense of self-preservation: when things go wrong, Alex can be relied upon to look after himself and nobody else.

Background Information and History: Born to a large but wealthy family, Alexander was afforded access to many opportunities… and even more vices. Despite attaining accreditation at a prestigious university, the early stages of his professional development were hobbled by a brief struggle with stimulant addiction and other lifestyle drugs. Luckily there was plenty of work following the devastation of the Federation Wars, and Alexander’s faltering start proved to be no barrier to corporate employment.

What started as a knack for modular construction then became his saving grace, and he eventually found himself specialising in rapid assembly and emergency repairs. His big break came when Roht Industries contracted him and a few others to salvage a derelict freighter that was at risk of drifting into a nearby planet’s atmosphere. However, rather than conducting a quick ‘smash and grab’ to reclaim the ship’s most valuable components, Alexander invested his personal funds (well, technically his family’s) to bring a few extra supplies and managed to jury-rig the ship for one last journey back home, bringing the whole thing back largely intact. Pleased with the unexpected returns on the operation, Roht Industries then offered him a permanent position as reward.

Now working as part of Roht Industry’s ‘risk management’ team, Alexander has already accrued a short but impressive list of engineering triumphs ranging from the successful containment of chemical spills to rapid fortification projects for threatened outposts.

His quick hands and even faster wits have served him well, saving the day (and more importantly his own skin) on more than one occasion. Whether it’s a reactor meltdown or haywire weapon systems, if anyone can avert an engineering crisis, it’s Alexander Briggs. If nobody can avert it though, he’ll probably be the first to the escape hatch.

I offered a character suggestion for this game once and asked a question, but as I didn't get a response in a week, I removed it back when this first appeared. So, as interesting as it still looks, I think I'll just have to try keeping up in the thread and seeing how everyone fairs.

Yes, I really am blind.
Being Literate is the ability to read and understand a language. When you ask for literate, what you are looking for is Verbosity, which is the ability to use lots of words without actually saying very much... like politicians. I consider myself both literate and verbose.

Hazy Sky

The reasoning is relatively simple. The heavy weapons guy has the job of being able to pin down or hurt anything that the riflemen can't stop or suppress so the squad can manoeuvre. Obviously the immediate thought is a machine gun of somekind, but those are not very useful against things with an armoured carapace or military vehicles. Also you have to lug around spare ammo and fresh barrels and stuff like that. Hassle and it's not effective against everything.
A plasma gun can have a low power setting that is enough to stop a man or similar and still fire quickly and a high power setting that burns big, big holes in anything up to a tank, but fires slowly. So it's effective at dealing with most threats. There's no ammo to carry as such, just a power cell for the operator to lug around. It simplifies everything and increases his effectiveness at the same time. Such is my thinking anyway. Otherwise the dude is lugging a machine gun and rocket launchers and spare ammo and other kit and everyone else has to carry some as well for him to have a reasonable amount...

There's a erason why even light machine guns have crews. Usually 2, but as many as 3. One to carry the gun, two to carry ammunition and defend the weapon.

The use of the machine gun, until World War II was strictly a support roll, but the Germans showed how effective reversing that was. The squad, or fire team, supported the machine gun, and made it seriously leathal in both defensive and offensive task.

Mortars and other heavy weapons were simularly crewed, but rockets and grenades are so light now that every man in a squad can carry 3 or 4 of them, so they really don't fall into heavy weaponry, at least not in my eyes, but I'm not even in this particular game.

As a side note, don't discount even a light machine gun against armor or giant insects. With the right ammo, a LMG can do serious damage to both. Maybe not destroy it outright with one shot, but as this appears to e sci-fi, thinking explosive tips and high velocity armor piercing or discarding sabbot rounds.

I am aware of all of these points and I agree with most of them. But not to dismiss your point regarding the firepower of a light machine gun, but they have no chance of piercing the armour on armoured vehicle. Softskins by definition are unarmoured, but anything with armour is generally proof against 5.56mm, 5.45mm, 7.62mm NATO and Soviet rounds. 12.7mm and .50 cal is a different matter. As these are not light machine gun rounds they're not relevant for the purposes of the discussion anyway. Put simply there is no way a light machine gun can disable a tank on its own. It can form part of a kill team's arsenal, but alone it cannot disable it.
My selection was based on the principle that the specialist wouldn't know what threats he might be dealing with and would try to select something that gives him the ability to engage different targets with some degree of success. Obviously it would be a compromise in some respects, but all in all I felt it was a reasonable one to go with.
Anyway I've made my case and we'll see what said and go from there. Nice to talk with you about it though Blinkin. :)

I have not read the last few posts in this thread -but- I will be making some big updates and changes to this game tonight, if not this weekend.

Also need to weed out the people who have not/are not posting from those that are sticking around, to figure out which roles are opened etc.

Some other tweaks too regarding the 'universe' as I see it - the more information to make more streamlined info appear.
