Welcome to New Orleans, darling.

You may know this as the place where the bayous come to rest in the cradle of sin & redemption. Where ghosts whisper from darkened alleys and church steeples. Where children play on trees that once held the corpses of hanged men. Where the musicians play jazz on street corners. Where the levees broke.

And oh, oh my stars, so many things broke along with those levees.

We’d gotten along alright until then. Or no, I suppose that’s a lie, isn’t it? Ever since the war, you know, nothing’s been quite right. I still remember when there was a Guide to every Sentinel. Balanced, it was, balanced in the way that God intended. Only then there was the war, and those bombs, and now… It’s a shame, a damned shame, how quickly we’ve forgotten the old ways.

Now I’m not saying the Tower doesn’t do what it can. Taking Guides from their families and all that politicking, well, I can’t very well approve of that, now can I? But they’re certainly better than those good for nothing Chainbreakers. Leastways for keeping the peace. Did you hear, they finally caught the man who started that all? Scared me half to death, that lot of troublemakers did, what with their bombings and protests and those riots…oh, but I forgot, you’re new in town.

Don’t fret, darling. You’ve better things to do than listen to the nattering of an old woman. Just keep your nose clean, I should say, and everything will work out just fine. Pay no mind to the ghosts or the children or the musicians. And if you’ve half a mind, keep clear of the levees, you know what they say about things that have already been broken.

Basic Information

Broken Bonds is a reboot of an earlier game (also known as Broken Bonds) created by Faustus. The original game was, in turn, inspired vaguely by the 90s television show The Sentinel and by the fanfiction Chameleon by VelvetMace. Don’t know any of those references? No problem!

The basics are this: our story takes place in an alternate version of Earth. In this alternate universe, humanity has evolved into three distinct “presentations” called Sentinel, Guide, and Normal. Sentinel possess heightened senses and what is gently referred to as “strong animal instincts”. Guides harness a shadowy form of emotional telepathy & manipulation known as Empathy. And Normals, who make up the bulk of the population, have no extra powers but also don’t suffer from the same power-caused-issues.

During the two World Wars, use of a chemical known as GSX9 led to the severe decline in the Guide population. This was…not good, to put it lightly. Sentinel need Guides to survive. It’s Guides who keep Sentinel from going mad either from their overstimulated senses or from their more bestial instincts. Enter the Tower, equal parts government and military, which works to keep Sentinel on an even keel and to match them with Guides from the depleted population.

Unfortunately, Guides aren’t particularly keen on being brought in as bargaining chips. Not to mention the fact that there’s plenty of resistance to be found in organizations such as the Chainbreakers and the TKO. There’s a storm brewing in New Orleans, and there’s no telling yet which way the wind will blow…

Notes & Links

o This game, due to possible content, will be located in the Non-Consensual-Human (NC-H) portion of the forum. It is a freeform sandbox-ish-styled game with overarching GM plots that players are, depending upon the plot in question, either encouraged or required to participate in.

o This game, as mentioned above, owes a heavy debt of gratitude to the original Broken Bonds team. It could not exist without the energy, imagination, and dedication that they put forth.

o It's easiest to contact the GM, Cerevan / me, via Gmail's Hangout function. I'm cerevanelliquiy on there and always welcome chatting. You can also reach me via PM, the OOC, or this here recruitment thread. Pick your poison.

The following are the rules and regulations of Broken Bonds. Please read them. Thoroughly. By applying to the game, you “accept the terms and conditions”, so to speak. We will assume that you have read, understood, and duly accepted said terms and conditions. The rules are enforced and we reserve the right to add rules as necessary.

  • No OOC Bullshit. Be excellent to one another.
  • No Fucking OOC Bullshit. This includes but is not limited to: being a possessive asshat, badgering for posts, whining about not being popular enough, and generally making people feel like shit. Three strikes and you’re out.
  • It’s Okay to Tell Mom. In this case, Cerevan is Mom. If an issue, IC or OOC, has arisen that can’t be reasonably worked out by those involved, please tell me. I will work to come up with a solution that’s fair and to dispense justice if needed. (But I can’t fix what I don’t know about so. Tell me.)
  • Don’t God Mod. This ought to go without saying but, just in case.
  • Use Your Words. Please try to communicate with other players about potential absences. Whether said absence is due to real life, muse issues, or something else, we will understand.
  • Post it Like Fedex. If you are in a group scene, especially a GM-facilitated group scene, you will be expected to post once a week to said scene. All other scenes may be posted to at a rate that you and your partner are comfortable with. Please keep in mind that the game moves forward one IC month for every three OOC months.
  • There’s a Trial Period. All submitted characters are accepted on a trial basis only. The trial lasts for three OOC months. At the end of the trial period, if the character has not been put into meaningful play, the character will likely be rejected from receiving permanent status.
  • Cruel Gods Exist. And I am one of them. If you leave the game without giving me a vague idea of how you would like your characters’ exits handled, there is a good (96%) chance I will use said characters to provide dramatic fodder. Which may include killing them off. Particularly if they are someone important. “Leaving the game” is defined as: announcing that you’re dropping and/or disappearing for more than three OOC months while failing to respond to the gently querying PMs I will send you somewhere around two and a half months.

Terminology

o Alpha : A Sentinel who has risen to the top of a Tower’s hierarchy. It is primarily a political position though its holders are usually of a military or police background. Alphas coordinate the training of Sentinel within their Tower and liaison with local government and businesses. They are usually, but not always, Bonded to the Omega of the Tower.

o Apprentice : A Guide or, rarely, Sentinel who has been picked out as particularly promising. They study under the Omega or, again rarely, Alpha of their Tower in order to learn their duties and to hone their abilities. Depending on the age of their mentor, an Apprentice may inherit the Tower from their mentor, or else “graduate” off to another Tower that needs new blood.

o Bonded : A connection forged between a Sentinel and a Guide. Bonding requires base compatibility between the two and is strongest when desired by both. However, Bonds can be forced, even if they are often weak. The process of Bonding is most often begun by the Sentinel biting the Guide (often hard enough to draw blood and/or scar) and is followed by days spent in one another’s company to solidify the Bond. Platonic and sexual Bonding are both considered equally valid.

o Bonding Interviews : A process, usually facilitated by the local Omega, by which a Guide is introduced to Sentinel with whom they might be compatible. If a pair are found to be compatible on a personal level as well as an institutional one they may undergo a number of interviews. Three is the usual number before Bonding.

o Cain : A street drug, currently only rumored, that supposedly dials up the animal instincts of Sentinel to near-feral levels. It is unknown at this time who is dealing the drug and what the long term effects of the drug are.

o Divorce : When applied to Sentinel and Guides, it is the process by which the Omega (or another suitably strong and trained Guide) breaks the Bond between a pair. The bureaucratic reason given is almost always “incompatibility”, but what counts for “incompatibility” is…varied.

o Empathy : A power used by Guides. It can be considered a kind of emotional telepathy. Depending on the strength of the Guide wielding it, Empathy can be used to sense, manipulate, create, and otherwise fuck with the emotions of Sentinel, Normals, and even other Guides. Exceptionally strong Guides can break Bonds.

o Guide : A human capable of wielding Empathy. Most Guides present in their late teens. They are notable for their pheromones, which are often described as “the best thing ever” by lovestruck Sentinel. Like Sentinel they tend to be durable, though they lack the innate athletic prowess of Sentinel.

o Guidine : A drug that is the go-to for many Sentinel without a Guide. It dulls their senses to “manageable” levels. It is a legal, if highly controlled, drug that is often used in hospitals and Towers to tranquilize Zoning or otherwise berserk Sentinel in absence of a Guide. Strong doses are administered via injection, while lower doses can be administered via patch or pill. (This is common for Sentinel in stressful lines of work such as military or police.) It is considered highly addictive and there is a substantial black market for the drug.

o Normal : A human who makes it through puberty without presenting as either a Sentinel or a Guide. This does not always mean they lack the requisite genes, only that said genes are latent. They are the largest portion of the population and are considered the “average” baseline for human ability.

o Omega : A Guide who has risen to the top of a Tower’s Hierarchy. While it is a political position similar to the Alpha, an Omega’s power resides primarily within the Tower, and they rarely gain much respect outside it. Omegas coordinate the training of Guides within their Tower, conduct Bonding Interviews, and mentor promising young Guides. It’s expected that an Omega will take on at least one Apprentice.

o Presenting : A term used to describe when a Sentinel or Guide comes into their attributes. It’s often considered part of the more generalized puberty and heralds a kind of “coming of age”.

o Scent Marking : Also referred to simply as “scenting.” An act by which Sentinel will imprint their scent upon something, or someone, that they consider “theirs.” Given that Sentinel have acute senses of smell it’s considered a rather blatant claim. (It can be considered rude.) Scenting is most often accomplished by simply rubbing up against the object and/or person in question.

o Sentinel : A human with enhanced senses, instincts, and athleticism. They most often present in early to mid teens. All Sentinel have a natural durability that allows them survive things more easily than the average human. Their natural athleticism gives them an upper hand in building muscle. Enhanced senses and animal instincts give them an upper hand in most combat and hunting situations. Despite being at the theoretical peak of human physical capability, without a Guide they can easily fall prey to their own hyperactive senses and their baser instincts.

o Watchtower : A piece of tech debuted in 2013 and further refined in 2015. It resembles a cellphone watch, but functions more as a fancy ankle monitor for Tower Guides. Watchtowers have real time GPS tracking, call lines to Guide Care Assistants, and a panic button. If a Guide goes outside the prescribed area the Watchtower has been programmed for coordinates are immediately sent to the nearest police.

o Zoning : A trance-like state Sentinel may enter when overwhelmed by their senses. This can happen due to honing in too sharply on one particular stimuli, attempting to take in too many stimuli at once, or simply being overcome by their instincts. A Sentinel going into a Zone can become more feral. A Sentinel gone into a Zone may become unresponsive.

Factions

Chainbreakers

Leader : Raphael Beauchamp (GM NPC)

About : Founded in 2007 by Raphael Beauchamp. Members have always been drawn primarily from the Wards, particularly the Lower Ninth, and from Treme. This is arguably due to a long-standing tradition within those neighborhoods of not giving up their own. Particularly when the government gets involved. The Chainbreakers have considerable pull and power within the Wards and Treme. Within those boundaries they’re generally viewed as somewhere between folk heroes and tragically necessary troublemakers.

Outside of those boundaries… The Chainbreakers came to public attention soon after their formation due to the tarring and feathering of a local social worker who'd done wrong by the Guides of the Wards. This marked them straight off as very nearly terrorists. They’ve dodged the label by a combination of luck, desperate PR on the Tower’s part, and the simple fact that it’s hard to pin them down for crimes that no one will admit to witnessing. Nonetheless, they do commit acts of terrorism, up to and including small bombings and the murder of particularly corrupt officials.

The Chainbreakers is primarily a violent resistance organization that aims to bring down the Tower system as a whole, starting with the New Orleans Tower. However, they do provide monetary support and manpower to more peaceful forms of resistance and they’re well known for protecting unwilling Guides from the Tower.

TKO | Blackout

Leader : Roman King VI

About : TKO is a local group, founded in New Orleans by Roman King IV, that makes profit within the boxing industry, mostly training and orchestrating matches between members and non-members, and also assisting with relocating guides, their families, and the occasionally normal. Relocation was their primary focus eleven years ago until realization dawned upon them that some form of combative training was essential as well. Not only did it help rebuild broken confidence but it also served as a means of protection within violent encounters. From there, training people became more frequent as rumor spread of their practice until it was no longer feasible to operate out of various basements and sometimes abandoned buildings.

With the purchase of an official building, TKO quickly became a local attraction, not popular enough to garner true success but well-known within the community. A little gruff in appearance, their trainers work hard to ensure whomever pays for lessons does not feel like their money or time was wasted. It is not uncommon to see men, women, or even children. While they sponsor mini tournaments, capable of being viewed publicly, they also host underground events where the gloves come off, so to speak. It is more gore filled and graphic, any hint of civilization is abandoned at the door. Injuries are commonplace here. Still, people come and place their bets upon their favorite fighter or take risks upon newcomers.

The Tower

Leader : Alpha Jean Dunbar (GM NPC) and Omega Karishma Dunbar (GM NPC)

About : Founded in 1961, the New Orleans Tower is somewhat infamous for taking it’s position in the “Big Easy” perhaps a little too literally. It has produced no Sentinel of particular note, aside from Alpha Caroline Paroix, who only became notable because she died. And it has had a long, distinguished history of not handling it’s scandals very well. If at all. Honestly, it’s a bit of a wreck in the eyes of most other Towers.

Nonetheless, the New Orleans Tower muddles along as best it can. Omega Dunbar has become somewhat popular in New Orleans for the improvements in Guide care that have taken place under her guidance. Alpha Dunbar has significantly strengthened ties with the local Marine Corps base. The PR Department churns dutifully on as it attempts to “spin” the latest issues with the Chainbreakers. Guides and Sentinel alike learn to master their gifts. And the police department…well, they have their hands full, quite frankly.

It’s the status quo. But things may soon change.

Character Creation

o There’s no limit to the number of characters you may create for this game. One, two, three…ninety-nine… (Well, we might stop you before you hit ninety-nine.) Edit : Until November 20th, you are limited to nine characters.
The caveat to this is that all characters are initially accepted only for a trial period. Trial periods last for one In Character month. Or, roughly, three Out of Character months. If the character has not been established and played within that timeframe, and assuming that the player has not communicated that there are extenuating circumstances, said character will be rejected from receiving permanent status.
What this trial period is meant to do is allow for players to experiment with character concepts that catch the muse…while also acknowledging that sometimes, something that was tantalizing in concept is significantly less so in execution.

o For reasons of monotony and not having a ridiculous crime rate, players are allowed only two (2) characters with a Tragic (or Not Terribly Tragic) Widowing in their background. The two characters in question may not both be Guides. (E.g., it may be one Sentinel and one Guide, or two Sentinel, but not two Guides.) Choose wisely.

o For reasons of not breaking the world-building, players may only have as many active Guides in play as they have active characters of other presentations (Normal or Sentinel). This may be fudged if, say, someone is creating a Guide in explicit conjunction with another player creating a Sentinel. However, keep in mind the idea that Guides are outnumbered, even if the disparity is meant to be felt primarily by NPCs.

o If there is something about your character and/or their past that you would like kept “secret” from the game until it can be revealed IC, that’s fine! Please put whatever it is you would like to “leave out” in pink when you submit the character sheet for review. Once I’ve approved the sheet, you can take out the pink highlighted portions and leave the cast to wonder at the mystery.

o Sheets should be PM'd to Cerevan and titled "Broken Bonds - Character Name" to keep things neat.

Desired & Available Roles

Below are some desired, suggested, or otherwise available roles for all three dynamics with a variety of affiliations. If you want some clarification about a role, just ask, I’ll be happy to clarify! It’s important to note that just because a role does not appear on this listing does not mean it’s unavailable for play. If you have a concept, run it by me, I’ll most likely say yes! Essentially, this is just a starting place. It allows me to point out particular roles I as the GM would like to see filled. It also allows you, as a potential player, to see some areas that come with the potential for both plot points and character connections right out of the gate.

Note : Guide positions marked Bonded Only may, on occasion, include Guides who have been Widowed or Divorced. This will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Yes, you're allowed, nay, encouraged to bring back old characters. Modified to fit the new setting, of course. ;) And I think you should be able to find her in here?

FOUND HER! Awesomesauce. I'm back home from England tomorrow night, but it'll take me a couple days to get acclimated again to allow for my brain to do the necessary tweaking to her. Will a couple/few days be ok, or is that too long?

Also: check my A/A's for a small few out of the several thousand pics I've taken. I'll have more up in a couple days. A few key words which could allow you to get your Google-Fu on, if your interested. Alnwick Gardens, Garton on the Wolds, Rosslyn Chapel, York Minster, Castle Howard, Edinburgh Castle....

... to name just a few.  ::)

I may also be guilty of the multiple character bug. Oops.

But every game set in the South needs a disgruntled priest, right? Right.

I thought it was just perfect, I swear. >3>;;;

Also, in the works, I'm having a very blunt and quite a douchebag of an Asian guy who's a hacker and forger coming up. And I also have a female smart-arse yet very charming and laid-back British doctor coming up too. I'm debating on a third character though, but if I do bring that character over, it would be another Asian guy.

Me and my Asianness. >3> It shall spread throughout this game~

Yeeesss, let there be more Asian characters! This, I approve.

Flower

Hey guys. My name is Flower. I used to go by Dancing Flower but that was a while ago. Anyways, I have a troubling addiction. I spend way too much time on tumblr and have a lot of voices in my head. I know; weird. It's a character addiction. I just can't help myself. Despite my feeble attempts to resist their powerful sway, I have more than two characters in the works for this game. Anyways, here are a few...

-Alexander is my Sentinel. He used to work for the tower but has since split away from them. He's kind of my adrenaline junkie.
-Payton is a guide. She's currently a doctor at the tower. A bit posh, slightly prejudiced against norms, and horrible bedside manner. She was bonded but her mate perished during the flood. Some people don't think his death was an accident.
-Vera is another guide of mine. She's pretty aggressive and violent. Also works for the tower. I'm thinking she transferred in from a foreign one.
-Roman is my sentinel. He owns the TKO club. He's pretty much a grouch. xD

And there are potentially some others in the works as well. >.> I need to work through these sheets first though.

I still need to work on their history but that's the bare bones of it.

Amen!

*snickers at Flower*

I think we all know I have an issue with character hoarding >.>

A few of my pending characters:

- Nathalia Rocha - Bonded Guide from London - Her day job is working for the Private Security Company her father (a sentinel) owns, outside of that she's a Guide trainer for the Chainbreakers. She's a damn near OCD, no nonsense type that's every bit as dangerous as her Sentinel. Is not fond of "mess" of any type.
- Shay - Sentinel - Adopted sister of Xander - A headstrong exhibitionist with abandonment issues who drags up trouble from her search to find her birth parents
- Nemesis - Sentinel - Problem Solver/Enforcer type for the TKOs - She's a weird mix of bubbly sweetness and pure crazy. She likes pain and violence. Doesn't trust guides since her father was one and he messed up both her and her mother so she's a guidine addict.
- Spencer Dean - not sure yet if she's a guide or sentinel, either way she's terrible at being "not normal" - Pure Techie, kinda like an awkward puppy, not yet sure of her affiliation
- Contessa Rose Levesque - Rogue Guide, loosely affiliated with the TKOs - Own a burlesque club, is a tattoo artist, and helps with hiding/moving those who don't wish to be found.

There are others but uh... yeah... *cough*
