Anybody ever thought of any combat systems for RPing for when you and another roleplayer want your characters to fight or engage in any kind of competitive action? Like, I dunno... Maybe utilizing DnD or something? I'd imagine it'd probably have to be chance-based, maybe.

There have been an untold number games/RPs on Elliquiy where people have utilized a wide range of different TTRPG combat systems and challenge dice structures among a number of other very creative ways to resolve all sorts of combat structure.

I'm not a big fan of PvP myself but I have played in many group games and several solo's where dice rolls were used to resolve the mechanics of combat for sure.

For most RP, I prefer to just write out combat or whatever but recently (just the last couple years) i've begun exploring more TTRPG systems.

Do you have a preferred system? Is it DnD?

I actually don't know much in terms of TTRPG systems; I haven't really gotten a chance to really get into one yet. I have been interested in Cyberpunk though and actually have one of the books. I was thinking maybe I could some influence from that for how my muse would fight.

welcome to the forums and i'm sure you'll find lots of inspiration peppered about both in places like Cyberpunk and all through the Elliquiy... Hope you have fun exploring here.

There are a lot of different RPGs out there, with combat systems that range from the fairly abstract (I have 1hit point left, I'm still fine) through ones that mean damage has reduced a characters abilities (I've taken 3 wounds out of my 7, so I'm down 2 dice on all my rolls now) through to the incredibly detailed (that hit on the arm means I need to make a roll to avoid going into shock. The arm itself is temporarily crippled, and may be permanently crippled without major healing, oh, and blood loss will render me unconscious in 4 turns, and dead in 6). If you add in things like critical hits and misses, that adds another layer of complexity (I'm looking at you, Rolemaster MERP, with your self-severed legs and slingstone decapitation results)

The easiest way to simulate combat is to see how it comes into the story. For narrative purposes, does one character need to win or lose? If so, then just write it that way. Optionally write what moves your character intends to make, and let your opponent react to them as they would in character. While luck may still play a part, character skill and circumstances will also affect your combat.

This was a good question, and great to hear some of the answers. I haven't ever done dice or anything more complex than just playing it out but I can see how die rolls and other things could help with fairness.
