Plot

John Adams High School is not any better than any school in Vermont. The same problems happen. The same grades are low. The intelligent and the socially inadequate still walk around in fear of being terrorised.

Strangely though, no such problems are reported in this senior year. There's no bullying; or very little. Fights, by and by, don't happen. The year is a shining example to the rest of the school, with the board of governors believing that these seventeen/eighteen year olds have reached the age where they have outgrown petty squabbles and childish bullying.

In fact, the real reason such instances are low has nothing to do with maturity and a spirit of cooperation. Several years ago, the school's ruling class (anyone popular enough to be worshipped by the rest of the students) decided that there was an 'alternative' to bullying. For anyone who was being bullied, whether they were a nerd, a quiet outcast or merely someone who'd made a powerful enemy, there was a 'get out clause.' Their tormentor would offer them a deal. Instead of being hounded daily, or telling a teacher in the vain hope their problems would be solved, they could merely 'opt out.' This service wasn't free; it meant that you would be the slave of your bully. This could amount to anything from busybody tasks to extreme sexual servitude. This bond lasted until your 'owner' saw fit to release you. They seldom did.

The practice began a year ago, in eleventh grade. We will now chart the story of how the custom began, and how it has carried through to the final year of school. How the school's popular elite managed to effectively enslave their 'inferiors' and the abuses of power, as well as the relationships, that developed as a result.

Name: Jack Casey

Personality: Jack didn't get bullied for being a geek or for being brilliant; he was none of these things. He's been taunted over his family so many times which resulted in violence that he had to sign the opt out or face pressure from alot of the school. He's not always a sad, forlorn figure - he has a sardonic sense of humour, and claims to see right through the school's heart (and what he sees, isn't nice). He's hot headed, responding to any insults with violence and his fists, but that's a trait that he's now trying to train out of.

Biography: Jack's family is his main trigger when provoked. His younger sister is developmentally challenged, meaning that a massive additional strain is put on the rest of his family. Jack has always had a hard time in school due to this, and the fact that he cannot let it go unpunished. He grew up in a lower middle class apartment in town, never having much money. He made some friends in school, but people fear to hang around with him now due to the fights he gets into.

Personality: Very unpredictable, prone to mood swings, can be both ruthless and very gentle.

Biography: Julie is not your typical school girl. She's creepy, just looking at her would make someone turn around and leave. She dresses in a dark, almost gothic way, and isn't the most social girl around. In another person, her looks may have gotten her to be bullied. But in Julie's case, it's not a pretense. It's not an emo style used by a weak girl. Julie is strong, she knows how to fight, she can kick a guy's ass easily. She is extremely dominating. Everyone knows the rumor that she brought a handgun several times in school, but never got caught with it. She's also rumored to like biting and using a knife to cut people, and drink their blood, but again, it's just a rumor...
