As a gerontologist, someone that studies aging, I can't underestimate the socio-cultural value of the television program The Golden Girls. It broke down barriers of women and middle aged adults depicting them as vibrant, sexual, and controversial.

We find ourselves at another cross roads with the death of Rue McClanahan, who played Southern belle Blanche Devereaux.

Thank you to Estelle Getty (Sophia), Bea Arthur (Dorothy), Rue McClanahan (Blanche) and Betty White (Rose).

RIP Estelle, Bea, and Rue.
