Plot Intro

Connecting

Hello there! If you're reading this then you have successfully completed the six hundred year old journey to the Andromeda Galaxy! Your ship, the Ark Liberator has been making  the 2.53 million light years journey to bring you and half a million other colonist to the Andromeda Galaxy!

The journey was estimated to take approximately six hundred years! Which means if you're listening to this it's now six hundred years into the future! For those of you that still feel groggy or do not remember you spent the time slumbering peacefully in hyper sleep. Our Cryo pod technology enabled us to preserve all of you in a state of "suspended" animation. For you colonist it would have felt like nothing more than a quick peaceful slumber. The year is now 2785 a staggering Six Hundred Years from our departure date of 2185.

We've docked in open space for now. Extensive long range scanning and mapping has given us a potential of three planets to explore and survey for colonization. Most of your fellow colonist will be left in cryo sleep while we survey the planets and determine which ones are suitable. Leading the charge will be the Rangers highly trained and specialized operatives. They and their teams will survey the planets determine their viability and proceed from there.

This is an extensive part of the process but do not worry! The hard part is over and we've made it! The greatest pilgrimage the human race has ever attempted is on its second half. For those of you joining the Ranger team please report to your Ranger for further instructions.

Welcome to the Andromeda Galaxy!

Game Synopsis

In this story players will step into the role of one of the colonist. These colonist have made a unprecedented journey to the Andromeda Galaxy to try and colonize it. They face the reality that they can never go back to the Milky Way or their home planet. That six hundred years have passed and everyone they know is dead. The goal is to find the best planet to set up on and establish a human settlement.

The Rangers

Leading this charge will be the Rangers. The rangers are specialist trained to scout suitable planets and determine their viability. Rangers are highly trained specialist who fulfill a wide variety of roles on the ground. Combat, surveying, diplomacy, and scientist analysis make up the core of the team. Certain members may be found using exoskeletons and mech's

FAQ

1.Is this connected to the Mass Effect Universe?

No! At least not at this time. I left it open ended so it could be that if people decide that's what they want. However the main idea of traveling hundreds of years to colonize an unknown frontier could easily be OUR future. So this can either be it's own thing or canon based on the interest of the group.

2.Will there be an alien element?

Yes! Andromeda will be inhabited and there will be both an antagonist alien race and a (possibly) friendly alien race. They might even become playable depending on how many writers express an interest.

3. Do I need to be a bad ass marine?

The ranger teams and the colonist coming over represent the best of the best from Earth. Every profession, government position, and more has come to Andromeda. You can be anything you want to be! From an Inventor to a thief or hacker.

Gm Commitment

As your Gm I would like to swear by the following statement and promise to you.

As you're Gm I promise to keep the game moving, to make sure you guys get a reply at LEAST two times a week, and to facilitate a fun enjoyable game.

Lead Ranger

The Basics
Legal Name: Taticus Kilgore
Alias: Lewis, The Bane Of the crater, Chief
Sexuality: Hetero
Age: 38
Gender: Male

Physical Description
Face Claim: Younger Sylvester Stalone
Appearance: the tape on the eyebrow but other than that nothing different

Personality and History

Personality

Protective, protective even to the point of being ruthless. Excited as Taticus is about colonizing a new corner of the universe his biggest concern is making sure the human race isn't extinct coming out the gate. He's been training for this for years and excepts people under his command to follow his orders to the letter. In the field he's calm cool and calculating. He doesn't joke nor play around.

Outside of that he still tries to maintain a professional distance. However he also suffers from self doubt and insecurity. Though he does everything possible not to show that to the people under his command the fear of messing up scares him shitless.

Biography

Before the hundred year journey Taticus was something of an.. odity in the Milky Way. He was a military man for a time and was part of the marines sent to the moon to clear out the insurgents. Shortly after that he washed out under mysterious circumstances and received a honorable medical discharge. Taticus has never spoken about what happened and when pressed will only say he "disagreed" with military command.

After that though he became for lack of better word an explorer. Colonization of the universe was happening at a rapid pace and people were needed to explore and scout out potential colony spots. He started his own company that specialized in such a thing and gained several high profile clients. Not only did he make good money he also got to explore territories and worlds people had never stepped foot on.

Fast forward three years later and he received the offer to participate in the Andromeda Colonization Initiative. While his whole company was offered a place ultimately only he signed up for the journey. He was named Lead Ranger for his years of experience in this particular field.

Weapons & Equipment

Weapons: Tacitus carries a modified plasma revolver, a tungsten alloy slug riffle, and a specially crafted curved hunting knife.

Equipment:

Mecha Suit: I'm open to some fluidity here! You can go with anything from a big hulking mecha to something small and limber or not even have one at all!

Voidknight

As one of- I think the six- people who thought the best Mass Effect was Andy and generally loves the themes being explored- you have my interest. Will you be using a system do you think?

Norsegod1839

I loved the themes being explored and what not as well in that game! It really drew me in even with all the other problems.

I won't be using a system. If only because I have never used one before and don't really have the time to sit down explore and learn one. It'll be primarily sandbox with me acting as Gm to move things smoothly.

Aenon

I want in too. I have some questions however:

Will we be playing humans only? I have played a bit ME so I don't mind if we use that setting, but I am not very knowledgeable about it.

Also, will we be allowed to make up details for the setting as we write, and if yes to what extent? For example if I write "His weapon is X model, which was one of the best weapons back in earth"  will it be ok? What if I go ahead and say that "After scanning the area he found a cave that could probably be used to set up a base", or things like that?

Final question: Are we expected to go as a team, or we can go by ourselves?

Norsegod1839

Answer to first question

This is its own thing with no connection to the ME universe. That is unless there is a majority that want it to be (so far I have not seen any evidence of that). In answer to the alien question. I do plan on there being aliens and natives in the Andromeda Galaxy. I don't know if they'll be available to play right away though. However once they are introduced and what not I was planning on letting you guys play them.

Second Question

I would say yes but with some caveats. I probably wouldn't accept a "His weapon is X model and one of the best back on Earth" If only because it might seem to OP? However saying that you have a really reputable gone or even one with a good history back on Earth is fine. Same with the cave thing. I'm not going to make it super linear so as to stifle creativity.

Final Question

Initially the only ones going down to the surface will be the Ranger Team. These teams will be responsible for determining which of the three planets is the best starting out planet. After that (when we move to the diplomacy and setting up part) you could go on by yourself yes.

Dezco

Heya! Showing my interest if this group is still recruiting! It's been a while since I've done some good Sci-fi setting and this might be a good opportunity!

Blinkin

Call me conditionally interested.

I freely admit that I know nothing about Mass Effect and the likelihood that I'll learn anything for it is somewhere between slim and snowball. If everyone pushes this to go into that universe, I'm likely going to step back simply because this has such potential to run on it's own merits and keeping it as it's own unique universe has so much more potential than placing it into an intellectual property simply because "Hey, that's a cool game!" Why not create something that stands on it's own and be the creation of the GM and players instead of a copy of something else?

Aside from that, I do have a couple of questions concerning player control over world development. I encourage curiosity as much as anyone and it's the heart of writing. but...

1. Will the GM be standardizing elements to keep things consistant? IE: Will someone be able to yank out a high-energy and kick ass laser rifle after someone else has more or less stated that his top of the line Pulse rifle  uses magnetics to accelerate a slug to a lethal velocity previously?

2. Will the GM encourage players to consult with him before tossing out potentially story altering elements? IE: discovering the ancient AI Landu set up by an even more ancient alien race to protect the natives from pesky invading humans and dismantling it all on his own to save the universe. It could be a great story arch, but I think that the GM should stamp it with his seal of approval before it appars.

3. Last one, I promise. How much control will the GM maintain over things like the afore mentioned perfect cave found the first day on the planet? Would he, for example, slip in that if it's perfect for the human's use, it may already be seen as perfect by something else that could  eat all that irreplaceable gear left there and eat you right out of your skin like a juice box and bullets just pisses it off? The point is that, the world should be unknown, unexplored and perhaps even deadly at every step because you just don't know what may be waiting under that bush and it keeps characters on their toes with some suspense and twist.

Being Literate is the ability to read and understand a language. When you ask for literate, what you are looking for is Verbosity, which is the ability to use lots of words without actually saying very much... like politicians. I consider myself both literate and verbose.

I can say that the likelihood of this going into the canon Mass Effect Universe is pretty slim in and of itself. Because I haven't seen a lot of people interested in that. I expect it's going to be its own thing and thats also how I have been planning it.

Now in answer to your question

1. While I want technology to be fluid for you guys I also don't want people to use it to make themselves Over Powered or anything like that. So I'll be including in the character sheet a option for weaponry and then doing my best within the character sheets to make them all even and balanced. I should also include that the point of the colonizing was to do it peaceful. So anything beyond border turrets and small arm weaponry might not have even COME on the colonizing trip

2. I have a few ideas in mind for story plots and what not that the recon team with run into but I also want to promote you guys getting to create your own stories within this universe. I'll be there the whole time to hear your guys interest and ideas and help make them a reality that every one can enjoy.

3. Again I feel my answer might be the same as up above. The idea of exploration, the idea of not knowing whats around every corner, and the idea of danger coming about at any turn should be things we have to deal with. I promise to give you guys the leway to explore as much as possible and for every thing we find to be interesting and yes possibly (and very likely) dangerous.

Blinkin

Thank you for your answers. I'm very interested and as long as no one objects to a male playing a female, consider me in.

My first thought is an ex-military medic attached to the Rangers to provide services as need. Perhaps some training as a botanist to tell people if "That strange orange thing that looks like a pear? I told you not to eat it. Now you'll die a slow death of disentary instead of being eaten quick." (a bit of dark humor)

She pokes the wound, "That hurt? Good. It means you're alive... here, stick your finger in it and I'll be back as soon as I can."

;)

A medic with a degree of botany experience would be highly sought out as a member of the ranger team. Welcome aboard!

Norsegod1839

The character sheet is up! I will put my own sheet up as an example soon as I finish it

Blinkin

Thanks for the welcome.

I have two problems that I hope will not get me denied as a player.

1.I can't give you an image or pic for a face claim; being blind tends to severely restrict that. I could give you a face claim, but it's likely going to be from the 80's and 90's, as that's the last time I actually saw a face. I can give you as detailed text description as is needed, but that's the best that I can do.

Second problem, I want to stay in line with what might be possible for the year 2175, so I would like to work with the GM on what might appear in the pack of what is essencially a battlefield medic. I have some ideas, including some ability to do "meatball" surgery if necessary, but essencially, I see her job as keeping someone alive long enough to be extracted for more serious care.

Weapon wise, Probably a handgun of some sort, maybe a combat knife, but really don't see her being a serious combatant.

so... lets see what she needs and I'll work on the rest of her over the next couple of days.

In no way would I ever let the fact that you have a disability prevent you from joining the game! If you dont want to use a FC thats up to you. If you want to use one then cool if not just modify the CS sheet accordingly Or just let me know.

Since your going to be more in the medic line then that's fine. If you want to show me what you're thinking or your ideas I can take a look and work with you!

I have a request, if anyone wishes to take it on. I need a face shot of Catherine Mary Stewart from the mid 1980's. As a reference, she stared in Night of The Commet and The Last Starfighter, both in the same time frame. Although I don't recall her with her hair up in either of the movies, if one could be found with it in a ponytail or pulled back, that would be nice, otherwise, anything that I can get would be great.

Lisa, or as her teammates calls her in the time honored honorific of medics the universe over, "Doc" is often a confusion of images that leaves the normal person disoriented. When she's on the job, on the ground or just in a bad mood, she can come across as abrasive, even cold and verging on heartless. When Lisa's relaxed, being one of the guys, she can be gargarious, easy going and even flirty with more than a hint of easy in her attitudes. Then, there is the girly Thumper and she never lets you forget that under the dirt and blood, she is a woman. In this state, she's an outrageous flirt and goes out of her way to find companionship; dressing in frilly, sexy andattractive outfits that accentuate her figure and attributes. This has often been called Lisa at her most dangerous, although no one will say why after experiencing it.

Those who know her best understand that none of these is the real Lisa Purdue, but roles that she assumes to hide the real person; if even she remembers who that woman might be.  "Lisa, the outgoing and chatty side may be the closest; the woman that she lets out after the shell of Doc that she requires to do the job that being a battlefield medic demands; to allow her to function in the horrors of war and the insults done to the human body. Doc can be cut throat and even cruel when needed, but she'll never leave a companion behind as long as he draws air.

Thumper, on the other hand, is, to be blunt, is what comes after Doc. She's the one who craves and seeks out human contact and has no qualms about what happens between consenting adults. She's dangerous simply because she doesn't know limits and doesn't accept that people have them. It's shop til you drop at a month long Macy's sale and damned the 3" heels and charge the cards! sort of woman.

In short, no one really knows Lisa and she could actually be a little insane, and hides it so well that not even she realizes it.
