You are being watched. The government has a secret system, a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people. The Government considers these people "irrelevant". We don't. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us, but victim or perpetrator, if your number's up... we'll find *you*

This would be a roleplay based on the tv show Person of Interest. I would be starting early in the series, but in another city. It would start, as the show did, with numbers coming up that need to be investigated. The characters from the show would not be showing up in anything more than a cameo, if that. It would be a small group. Familiarity with the show is not required, but would be a big help. For another slant on it, it is somewhat similar to the DC Comics title Birds of Prey in the early days of the title. The story will start in Los Angeles, and likely be mostly based there, but will occasionally go elsewhere.

Roughly speaking the “classes” I would want to start with would be:

Hacker- a truly elite specialist with computers, among the world’s best. This would be the most direct route to the Machine, the group’s source of information.

Soldier- someone with a highly skilled combat background. Some type of military special forces would make the most sense, I would listen to other ideas if they’re compelling and well thought out.

These two are the bare minimum I’d need to start. Others that would be helpful would be:

Cop- with the city police wherever we start. This could be anything from a good cop who gets drawn in or a bad cop who could possibly be blackmailed. There could be more than one of them if two people are interested.

Gangster- It never hurts to have underworld contacts. The gangster would either be the movie stereotyped thug with the heart of gold, or be induced to help by offered reward or large threat.

Medic- They wouldn’t serve as active a roll in the field, but they could be of a lot of use. They could be anything from an EMT to an actual surgeon or any other specialist.

Com Artist- Sometimes Hacking or Hitting aren’t the right approach. Some situations call for the personal touch.

I would consider any other character type that would be of use if someone comes up with an original idea.

My focus would be on action adventure. I have no issue with romance sex scenes creeping in as the characters get to know each other, but that would be among the players, not something I’d set up for. I am very busy and arguably over committed, so I would probably be posting once a week or so for this, but I’d be in it for the long haul. I’d be handling NPC’s, the Machine, and other needed characters as they come up.

The lead hacker (Finch on the show) is going to be Inks, who is also going to be my co-GM. Any other roles, and even another hacker, are open.

Can we mix soldier and cop?

I'm thinking someone who put a foot into Shaw's and Reece's world and stepped back, got out and went into law enforcement. Maybe a bit of Reece's background with the folks she worked for thinking she's dead.

Caradoc

I don't see any reason why not. I know a lot of ex-military who went into law enforcement. Come up with a background and I'd say you're good to go.

question is how did she go from agent to fugitive.

Caradoc

An excellent question for your background.

Or, they could not be a fugitive and at least start out the Carter/Fusco route and see how things go.

Or they could be something like Reece but stateside rather than foreign based. Burned by their agency or betrayed by someone
in it.

Poking my head in momentarily to offer food for thought -- If you did wanted to mix the two - fugitive/betrayed - you might consider what so many have gone fugitive for: being a whistleblower of some sort for whatever company (maybe private security if you're wanting a soldier-meets-cop type) they once worked for.

Well I was thinking her division was 'outsourced' to decima and she stumbled inadvertently onto something that involved them. She was on the site when it was 'sanitized' and has been 'off book' since. She thinks organized crime has compromised her division somehow at least at first.. or we could do  something along the way like you propose..

Caradoc

Good cop forced out by corruption (which lets face it, LA gets a lot of news for), targeted by someone for doing too good a job, however you want to do it works for me. If you like, write something up and either post it or send it to me and I'll be more than happy to look it over. Since you're the first one respond, aside from my co-conspirator here, you get a lot of freedom in setting up what happened for you.

Very pre. This is about the same time as first season of the show. Consider it the Machine experimenting with trying for more than one team at once.

So most likely she maybe ran into a Relevant case and Control is the one that sanitized the site.

Very much more doable.

Name: Kelly Anne Earp   Aliases: Several.
Sex: Female  Age: 30 Hair: Blond (Varies) Eyes: Blue
Legal Status: Believed KIA.
Skills: Pistol, Close Quarter Combat, Infiltration, Investigation and Impersonation. (Undercover agent)
Associations: USMC, Force Recon (Former), DEA Undercover Unit (Former)

Advantages: Natural Chameleon (can slip into a role easily enough), Connected (She has extensive connections in the California Underground)
Disadvantages: Officially Dead (Killed in Action), Vindictive (Angry with her 'betrayal', looking for the perp that 'killed her')

Background: Kelly Anne Earp was born in a small town outside of Dallas/Fort Worth. She was an amazing actress as a child, her mother and father enjoying her performances at the local school and drama society. Till 9/11 when her mother, died visiting her bosses in New York city when the towers fell, and her world collapsed. Her father, a reserve officer, went active duty and was almost instantly shipped overseas. She grew up following her dad's emails and with a new mission, to be like him an contribute. She added athletic pursuits like cross country and akido to her acting. By the time she graduated high school, she was an excellent actress, best in the county with a pistol and mid-range in martial arts.

By the time she'd finished boot and went into Force Recon, she was the only member of her family still alive, her grandfather dying of a heart attack and her father in an IED blast. She did her time in Iraq, picking up Arabic and investigation skills as the intelligence specialist for her unit. By the time her first tour was up she had been approached by several ..shady groups but she declined to take them up on their offers and returned to the US. She applied to the DEA, the US Marshall service and even the Texas Rangers (the family 'tradition'). She was recruited as an UC (Undercover) by the DEA and was responsible for assisting in the taking down of several small groups that all tied back to a larger arms supplier that she infiltrated.

While in the back country of Utah, she found evidence of a massive arms deal, she was caught in what the wake of an 'accidental detonation' of a massive stockpile of arms that leveled the facility she was in. Officially she was written off, back channel chatter was that someone destroyed their facility before the Federal Government could raid it. What the back channels and she don't know was that she stumbled onto a 'Relevant case' and Control ordered a drone strike and quickly wiped out a massive domestic terrorist threat. She was written off as 'acceptable' losses and gained a place on the DEA memorial wall.

Only she didn't die, waking up in a ravine just outside the search radius after getting hit from the detonation of the arms when an Air-to-Ground missile detonated it. She doesn't recall much but she does have one clear memory. The image of a predator drone against the moon as it launched it's full payload at the facility. A drone only used by the government. So she went into hiding and is doing what she can to figure what happened that night.
(I'm sure it will need tweaks)

Callie Del Noire

Note: when I say she is a good CQB and Pistol type..she's is NOT in Reese's class

Name: Savannah "Savi" Etienne
Alias: Zatanna/Zee
Birthdate: 21 January 1985
Legal Status: Alive. Wanted for Treason, Extortion, Blackmail, Identity Theft, and Threats to National Security
Class: Hacker

Point of Origin: San Fernando, California.
Current Location: East Los Angeles, California.
Family: Alexis Etienne (Adoptive Mother), Paulo Etienne (Adoptive Father), Ariana Etienne (Adoptive sister), Marco Etienne (Adoptive brother)

Born to a mother far from prepared to raise a child, Savannah was abandoned at birth only to be adopted within days by Alexis and Paulo Etienne - Italian immigrants who had, for years following their marriage, struggled to conceive a child of their own. The eldest of three adopted children, Savi struggled through school, whether through boredom or the ability to over-complicate simple lessons based around biology, literature, and mathematics. Her only saving grace was the ability to understand the inner workings of computers at a time when the vast majority of everyday people barely understood them. Growing up, computers became the only thing in Savi's life that truly made any sort of sense to her.

In 1994, just days before her ninth birthday, the only home Savi and her siblings had ever known was destroyed by the Northridge earthquake, leaving the family homeless and forced to move into the first available shelter - a shoddy two bedroom apartment in Culver City, just shy of the worst part of town, not that any of it was really good. It was following the earthquake, when the insurance company meant to cover their once-home denied reimbursements to the Etienne's for damages sustained during the disaster, that Savi began to understand the phrase "Life isn't fair."

Forced to move constantly in attempts to move the family into better neighborhoods, Savi and her siblings found themselves further and further outcasted from peers. Constantly new to one school or another, constantly living in apartments and houses infested with cockroaches, surrounded by gang violence, corrupt cops, disgusting neighbors, or simply falling apart, she learned quickly how to go undetected, to make her life easier. It would be one of many traits she learned from youth that helped her survive.

By seventeen, the only solace Savi had outside of her relationships with her siblings was the growing collection of trashed computers she always had on hand. Working to avoid the ridicule and harassment of cruel teenagers, she locked herself away, got lost in the growing world of the internet, of technology. It was then, as a teenage recluse looking for an escape, that Savi found her way into the underground of the information superhighway.

In a short amount of time, her skills with computers - the simplicity with which she understood them, and her ability to quickly pick up one programming language or another - opened the door to a world where Savi could do more for her family than work meaningless jobs while watching them struggle to merely get by. By the time the tragedy of 9/11 struck the nation, she had established herself as a prodigal hacker, a tech whiz, and a force to be reckoned with when it came to slowly and methodically bankrupting companies that sought to take the lives and livelihood of everyday people.

For a long time, by luck more than anything, she got away with her dealing, ever careful to avoid being blatant in her actions. Unfortunately, 9/11 and the impending war changed things for hackers and tech junkies alike - made doing anything under the radar nearly impossible without almost getting caught. It was then, having gotten caught up in a trade of California government secrets, that Savi had her first run-in with the law. She got off on a technicality, and with the aid of a friend who had all but fried her hard drive with magnets and more, but from then on, her life became a game of cat and mouse with eyes constantly peering over her shoulder. After a three-month stint in jail for trumped up identity theft charges - which she still denies to this day - Savi did the best thing she could do to keep her family safe from constant interrogation and invasion - she left.

From then on, she worked from local hotspots, bounced around from place to place, and survived off what little money she kept from the businesses she destroyed, doing everything in her power to keep moving, keep her head down, and keep doing what she meant to do: helping others.

Hey lovelies! As you're thinking up character development, I'd just like to offer a fun fact of sorts since we're trying to coincide this group's start up with when the story begins in the show (specifically Reese/Harold).

By all estimations Reese and Harold meet for the Machine's purposes at the end of 2010 into the start of 2011 and progress from there.

Name: Emma Cordero
Alias: N/A
Birthdate: 17 August 1985
Legal Status: Alive, LAPD Detective, no criminal record
Class: Cop

Current Location: East Los Angeles, California.
Family: Patricia Flores Cordero (Mother), Manuel Cordero (Father, deceased), Esteban (Steven) Cordero (Brother, ADA for LA county)

Emma's father was a police officer, killed in the line of duty when she was fifteen and her brother was nineteen.  Manuel was killed by his partner during a foot pursuit, and though there were hints that the other officer was on the take, the investigation eventually ruled that Manuel's death was accidental and his partner was cleared of any wrongdoing.  Manuel's wife Patricia blamed him, however, and his attempts to visit afterwards and to give the family money to help with expenses were rebuffed.

A few years later her brother was working his way through law school, and already showing promise as an attorney.  Despite Patricia's insistence that both her children could get a college education if that was what they wanted, Emma knew that her mother was already working much too hard for her children.  Deciding she would rather help the family financially, Emma joined the force after graduation.

But things went wrong at the Academy almost from the start.  Her father's former partner had since earned the rank of captain and thanks to him it was generally believed that it was Manuel who had been the dirty cop.  As word got out who Emma was, she took more and more flak from fellow cadets and even officers.  She was ready to quit, but decided that would only confirm the rumors and toughed it out.

Once an officer herself, she began to realize the full extent of the corruption.  Most of it was small in itself, but together it added up to a police force that seemed rotten to the core and she wanted to do what she could to fix it.  Thanks to her situation, she decided the best thing she could do was to set herself up as a sort of double-agent, acting the part of a cop on the take to gain trust, then quietly turning in the worst offenders.

This was easier said than done, however.  To play her role, she often had to break her own moral code, and found herself drifting slowly away from her family.  Worse, as months turned into years with no end in sight, her mission seemed more and more hopeless.  It would be so much easier and simpler to give up her double life and become what she seemed to be, and with little to no outside support that idea was supremely tempting.  Making the rank of detective, as she recently had, only made it easier to cover things up, until she felt completely torn in two.

(Note: Her undercover mission can be semi-official but off the books, where only one higher-up knows what's going on, or something she's doing on her own -- whatever's easiest.  Also, I'm terrible at finding character images so I'm still working on that part.)

I disagree with some of the practices and I work for Apple. I do think their iOS sandbox has some very good and very bad points for example.

It is what it is.. The media side of things.. I try not to blame Apple too much about that though.. They are clients to the media conglomerates who are epically foolish in their reluctantance to embrace a new method of market development.

And on another front, one of the NPS's the team may be working with:

Name: Alex Winters
Alias: Mirror
Birthdate: June 12, 1985
Legal Status: local law enforcement know he’s questionable, but so far he’s never been arrested or, more importantly, printed.
Class: gadgeteer/con man/magician
Skills: parkour, slight of hand, throwing (usually cards), special effects, lock picking, vocal mimicry, small gadgetry, electronics.

Alex was on his own from early on. His mother gave him up, not even fully finishing the paperwork when she took him into the agency. He never knew who his father was. By the time he hit 11 years old, he figured out “the system” was for suckers. He spent most of his early teens roaming the streets and learning about whatever interested him.

Alex was quick witted and light fingered. With a few pointers from people he pestered into teaching him along the way, he became adept at juggling, slight of hand, and pickpocketing. He developed an early interest in magic, and broke into various theaters (developing his larceny skills) to learn how magicians did their tricks. He started developing a few of his own.

He left the agency, orphanage, whatever you want to call it, at 16. He’s been on his own since. He’s managed to put together a studio apartment that’s part living space and part workshop. He very much lives for the moment. Seeing what he has on the streets and in the system, he loathes bullies of every kind. That mind set has gotten him in trouble and also endeared him to various people.

Alex does pretty much what he wants. He follows his own whims and code, and has no use for the sheep that let themselves get taken advantage of or won’t stand up for themselves. He does occasionally find himself doing things to protect the little guy, usually wondering what he’s getting out of it and why he’s doing it.

My favorite 'medic' scene in the series is a tie..

The one from the first season is Finch walking in with a dying Reese and basically throwing a bag of money at this coroner

The other is Shaw holding drug dealers hostage when she fixes herself, only to pass out, get caught..and STILL fuck up everyone in the room and walking out.

Percy's childhood was largely uneventful, with his father traveling aboard for work it was his mother who would mostly raise him and care for him, Percy enjoyed a privileged life being tutored in a private school, during the years he was not the most popular student among the school, he was often seen as a know it all or teachers pet, His fellow classmates would often prank him. After he had finished he took a year off from education to travel. He visited many places in both America and Europe.

When he Came back he then applied and attended Stanford as his mother drilled into him that he was destined for great things and he had to work hard to achieve them, Always striving to do his best he graduated at the near top of his class and with a degree in his hand. He went on to Medical school spending the years learning everything he would need to know, learning the basics of being a doctor then gradually a surgeon. He was about a year into his official duties when he started to realize not everyone was as fortunate as him in regards to medicare, Few people could afford the surgery and if they could it often was a huge hit to the finances without insurance.

Enlisting the help of a good friend of his who was also a doctor and another who was a nurse he started to edit patients insurance papers so it looked like they had it. This went on for six months or so before he was found out by the Chief of staff who while understood the effort to help decided to offer him a deal if he also gave up who helped him, Percy Declined telling him it was all his idea and he was the only one who was responsible, As a result he was demoted and while not officially fired or sued as they believed that the legal system would see Percy as some almost robin hood like figure attempting to help, relocated him to the EMT section of the hospital he now works.

While he does not make as much and arguably helps less people he is still happy with it nonetheless and believes he is still helping.

actually I thought I'd had Kelly come off as too much of a heavy

Big Question: Good tracking/tailing skills vs good disguise skills.. Who wins?

Left the thrashed computer Baggie out as a compromise

Caradoc

I'd argue tracking/trailing, usually. There's a psychological aspect to tracking.

So essentially she would have to sneak in back to not be spotted?

Caradoc

I will leave that to you and Inks to work out. I'm not part of that scene and don't want to leap into it. ;)

Saw this article today..and thought our resident hacker might have fun with these.. Module cell phones..

http://www.cnet.com/news/project-ara-everything-we-know-about-googles-modular-phone/

I mean she could make a phone that is current and with a GPS you could manually deactivate.

Inks

In general, tracking will usually win over for exactly the reason Doc pointed out: pure pscyhology.

You get into someone's head and no matter how good they are at disappearing, you'll eventually find them. We all have tells, habits that can be trained out of you but at some point...something makes you tick and you're easier to catch up to because of it.

No.. Not at all. She (Savi) knows how to fox a GPS phone. Kelly doesn't. Billy did.. So she went old-tech. The Nokia model she has DOESN'T have a gps. Problem is.. Being that old..the battery is shot. Trade off. She's offering to put it on a solar cell so you can contact her.

Have a friend who keeps one for just that reason.. (Of course he buys batteries by the lot groups of 20 to use it.. But he also points out he never texts in traffic or anything else stupid)

Additional note: The phone do not work MOST places. It works on base (NAS JAX where he works) and most blocks around his house.

Inks

Honestly, if I could get a nokia with solid texting, I might solely for how often I drop my phone.

My next reply is gonna wait for Doc so that we/Savi can get the beginnings of their first case to send to Kelly, just an FYI. From there, I think we're getting to the point where we can start bringing all of our patient observers~

There's a thread for background scenes now. Please check with Inks or me before starting one there.   Corrected thread location.

Groovy.. :D.

Flashbacks go here? Or can we add them into scenes still?

Caradoc

Wholly your choice. If they fit in the scene, do them there. I added it for depth for new stories, like the one with Alex and Cordero.

I wouldn't mind doing a few Billy/Kelly scenes but Billy doesn't always want to play.. Comes from the character knowing he's going to die I guess.

No one told Nathan he was going to die.. So he was awesome

Inks

Gonna hold my post until I get some info from the all knowing. Probably sometime Sunday night <3

Callie Del Noire

Yeah.. looks like I broke the game.. sorry.

Caradoc

You didn't. Several things changed at once for both Inks and I (which is impressive since we're in totally different parts of the county). My aplogies. I will possibly be doign a different group game this fall.
